This massive book is one author's attempt to condense and consolidate almost seventy years of pop music history into a single epic volume. Obviously, it's impossible to encapsulate the entirety of the breadth of pop music in a single book, but Stanley does an admirable job of covering the basics of pop music, from the beginnings of rock n' roll via blues, to Beatlemania, the rise of soul and R&B, hip hop and EDM - as well as giving a sense of the distinctive times that birthed those genres of music. It's a great primer for those that are new to the genre, and it's a fun read.
