Best pen depends on the paper.

These are excellent on white copy paper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006IE8O/

For notebook paper (thinner and bleeds through), Zebra pens will always be my favorite: https://www.amazon.com/Zebra-Ballpoint-Retractable-Refillable-Stainless/dp/B00NHV6VH0/

9 pack of Zebra F-301 ballpoint pens = $15 on Amazon. I've used these pens for years & I'll never use another brand again. Every other pen is inadequate. Get the guy something he can actually use at his desk & something he might really appreciate. A pack of F-301s. Get one for yourself while you're at it.

A pretty standard ballpoint has been the only one that has worked halfway decently for me. I have some older Zebra ballpoint pens similar to these that don't ghost too badly on lower GSM paper, but I generally use higher GSM paper and my normal pens

I don't buy the refills because the pens are fairly cheap and I'm always really hard on the grips (I play with them until they stretch out). Really I throw them away because I ruin the grips or the pen gets lost way before I ever run out of ink. I use to use these Zebra F-301 pens because I liked the look and feel. And I think in that regard they are better than the EnerGels. But the EnerGels write really smoothly and I don't smear the ink so I made the switch.

I love Pilot G2's, but my hands-down fave are Zebra F-301 0.7mm. I get compliments all the time, and a few other nurses have them. The charge RN calls it "her precious"

Would the Zebra F-301 Ballpoint or Pilot G-2 Fine Point be appropriate for the criteria that I've listed?

Review of Recommendations:

Papermate Inkjoy Gel seems like a very adolescent pen. I'm looking for something more sophisticated in terms of style.

Pentel Energel is not retractable. I feel like with a cap and close type of pen I would easily misplace/ lose the cap.
