How about a twist retractable. That might avoid the issue you are having with dust assuming the click mechanism is jamming. Zebra Stylus Pen. A Retro 51 would be a more expensive option.
I've used a 7" tablet and a 5" screen. I prefer the 5" phone, but find that sometimes my finger is a little big. I like using a stylus I found at the dollar store.
