Seriously, ya'll are putting together all this stuff, $500+ worth of parts which is great for us but you aren't thinking about your target audience. Browsing the web and writing books. That was the use case. You're going to build her a desktop computer with a dedicated GPU and all that for a use case of browsing the web and writing books?

IMO she might be happier if she gets the option to not be stuck writing at a desk all day and can instead relax on a couch writing.

Go spend the money on a quality Chromebook, and if you want to give her the desktop experience too, pick up a nice monitor to go with it while you're at it. No dealing with viruses either.

Sounds like you're describing the Acer R13

I would recommend this [Lenovo Yoga 720] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072M22XK8/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20) because it comes with everything you need, 7th generation, i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 16GB of ram for smooth multitasking, good SSD storage of 512GB for faster boot up and loading, 15.6 inch 4K UHD IPS touch screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, GeForce GTX 1050 GPU that should be able to handle games on medium to high settings with very good FPs, backlit keyboard, supports pen, thunderbolt port, and it’s within your budget.
I thought I would give you a little more in-depth review, so here it goes:

  • It’s equipped with Intel Core i7-7700HQ which is commonly used in gaming laptops, most convertibles use low powered dual core processors. The processor of capable of delivering enough power for most of work’s intensive tasks and gaming.

  • Full HD (IPS) 15.6 4K Touchscreen, which is very rare for this budget range and great for watching movies/videos. With color range of 90 % sRGB and 59% Adobe RGB it’s one of the best for this price and it’s suitable for average/mid content creators. Viewing angles are great with the IPS panel but with its glossy finish it’s not the best choice for outside usage.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2 G is one of the most common GPUs for mid prices gaming laptops.
It will run most Games with variant settings depending on the game requirements with good FPS
  • Heat management isn’t the best as the device heats up under load and CPU throttles to maintain reasonable temperatures, but it doesn’t reach the point of hurting the internal components

  • Good upgrades available, can go to 32 GB of ram, and even change the SSD. It’s relatively easily upgradable which isn’t the case for most convertibles.

  • It’s good on connectivity with 2 X USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt 3.

  • Battery life is from 7 to 8 hours of normal non-gaming usage.
  • Minimal bloat-ware, speakers have excellent quality but not so loud, Keyboard is excellent as you would expect from Lenovo keyboards, Trackpad aren’t much different with windows precision driver, It has fingerprint scanner which is fast and accurate, The body is sturdy and feels premium as it’s all aluminum.
u/PeteyNice · 6 pointsr/chromeos
  • The easiest way to print from a Chromebook is to a printer that supports Google Cloud Print. There are other ways but they are not fully supported or require an intermediary. https://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/printers/
  • You can plug in external devices to Chromebooks no problem but remember that they generally have very limited disk space - consumer Chromebooks tend to have between 16 and 64 GBs of disk space so it won't be great as a media hub. Also, your options for photo editing are much weaker than on MacOS.
  • ChromeOS is at its core a Chrome browser. So it can cast to Chromecasts naively. It looks like there are Chrome extensions to cast to Roku but I have never tried them.

I love my Chromebook but I have a Cloud Print compatible printer and have moved a lot of things to the cloud so the lack of local storage does not bother me.

The Acer CB14 is nice if you want a big screen. It can be hard for under $200 if you are ok with a refurb and hunt around (Amazon for spec/review purposes only) https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Aluminum-Quad-Core-CB3-431-C5FM/dp/B01CVOLVPA

If you don't need a screen that big and can spend some more, you can usually find a Samsung Chromebook Plus on Amazon Warehouse Deals for $350 or less. That has an amazing screen and supports Android Apps out of the box. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-Convertible-Laptop-XE513C24-K01US/dp/B01LZ6XKS6

Choosing ChromeOS is becoming a a viable option for everyone but it is a lifestyle change if you are used to a vast application library and ample local storage.

I'm thinking that the XPS 13 would be perfect for you. Great build quality, great battery life, and it's the right size. The HD 620 iGPU in the lower tier models should be able to give you close to 60FPS on Medium settings according to NotebookCheck.. Here's a video of the someone testing Sims 4 on medium on the exact specs and it's running great at medium.

If I were you, I'd go for the i5-7200U version, but the i3-7100U would be fine. You may also consider upgrading the 128GB SSD to 256 for 100$ more on Dell's website. That would put you anywhere between $791 for the i3 and 128GB SSD to $1089 for the i5 and 256 SSD.

The XPS 13 really is top of the line in its class though, and that is reflected in its price. There are budget options that can take care of your duties for cheaper.

  • Acer Spin 5 - 13 inches, same specs, $589, but has touch screen

  • Asus Zenbook UX 330UA - Same shit, except no touch screen, slightly better build, and $699.

The XPS is nicer, but it's not inherently better. I'd be tempted by the Acer and Asus if I'm being honest. Same specs and can be had for cheaper.

u/PM_ME_UR_CATS_ASS · 5 pointsr/techsupport

You won't get a quality Windows laptop for that price. Chromebook would be the way to go IMO. Here's probably the best one sub $300 IMO.

If you're looking for top-of-the-line, this one is usually regarded as the best:
https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-Intel-12-5-Inch-Touchscreen-storage/dp/B01N5G5PG2

Chromebook's can't do a lot like storing files locally and running Windows programs, but you have access to android web store, all of Google products plus extra storage for Drive. I know Office is still compatible with it so menial work and tasks could be done as well.

u/ButterMyToes · 5 pointsr/buildapcsales

I'm not too sure about the upgradability (not exactly the best w/ laptops) but I found this Lenovo Ideapad Flex the other day. 3500U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe, 1080p. Can fold up into a tablet and comes with a pen for the display. I think it came to around $560 with tax.

u/crushendo · 4 pointsr/NCSU

If you're on a budget, I just picked up this laptop and definitely recommend it. I did a lot of research beforehand and it's the best thing out there in this price range. It's running a Ryzen 5 CPU, which means it's got some impressive graphics capability for your CAD work. Plus it's a 2-in-1 and pretty light, so it's also great for note taking in class.

Another major benefit, especially if you're engineering and have some technical skills, is that the RAM, battery, and SSD are user upgradeable, which means you'll be able to keep this laptop running strong for years with a couple cheap upgrades when it starts to slow down.

It's not as fancy as other laptops out there, the build quality is where they had to make some compromises. Plastic body, speakers arent amazing, not the best screen out there, and the battery life is about 5-6 hours. But it's Lenovo, so it's still pretty solid, the keyboard feels pretty good and the trackpad is as good as anything out there under about $900.

Overall there's nothing near this powerful out there at this price range, especially if the 2-in-1 touch screen matters to you. But whatever you choose, I would definitely recommend something with a discrete graphics card or an AMD Ryzen processor like this one if you're going to be doing graphics intensive work like CAD.

**note: if you'll be doing a ton of MATLAB however, MATLAB is optimized for Intel and runs a lot slower on AMD processors, so that may also be something to consider.

u/Michiganders · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Dell Precision Xenoflower linked has pretty solid build quality considering its price. It may be a bit big if you're looking for an ultrabook though, as it has a 15.6" display and weighs in at 5.16 lbs.

If you really want great build quality in this price range you'll probably have to buy used/refurbished or stretch your budget a bit. A refurbished business-class laptop, such as the Thinkpad T480, Latitude 7480, or HP Elitebook G4 would fit the bill quite well.

Two more I'd say to consider are the Lenovo Flex 14 for $530. It meets most of your requirements with a Ryzen 5 processor (similar to an i5), decent integrated graphics card, 256GB PCIE SSD, and comes in at 14". I wouldn't expect amazing build quality but it could still last a while if treated well.

You could also consider the 14" Lenovo THinkpad L480 that's on sale at TigerDirect. It's not quite as well built as the T-Series thinkpads but should still be a bit better than most consumer laptops in this price range. It also doesn't have an SSD but you could install one yourself.

u/GuyYoureThinkingOf · 4 pointsr/LaptopDeals

This is not a sale - it's been this price for most of the time that it's been listed on amazon: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-Graphics/product/B07PB5M8DS

u/count_smith · 4 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

https://www.amazon.ca/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-81SS000DUS/dp/B07TWHYTSQ/

600$. 2-in-1 14" Touchscreen/pen for notes, 3.5 lbs. 3500U/Vega 8 should handle minecraft fine. Don't think you will find better for 600$ and specs are great for that price.

u/legos45 · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

As close as I can get the middle of your budget, how about the Lenovo Yoga 720? It has:

  • i7-7700HQ 4-core processor

  • 16 GB of RAM

  • 512 GB SSD storage

  • 4K 15.6" display

  • GTX 1050 2 GB graphics card

  • Weight of 4.4lbs and battery life up to 8 hours

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. The laptop should be able to run the games you listed at medium settings. It has an aluminum chassis. I wouldn't expect 4K gaming to go well, but 1080p should be fine. It is decently light for a 15.6" device.
u/kverberk · 4 pointsr/chromeos

I would suggest the [Acer R11 for $269USD](https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Convertible-11-6-Inch-CB5-132T-C1LK/dp/B01J42JPJG/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483770071&sr=1-2&keywords=acer+r+13 "Amazon Link to purchase") if you're really on a tight budget, but you're going down to 11.6", which may in the end be better for portability if you're still lugging back and forth from classes. It also has Android Apps in the stable channel which is a bonus. Just make sure if you get the R11 that you get the 4Gb Ram model or else Android won't run well on it anyway. My previous chromebook was the Acer C720P, which has the same screen size, and it was nice and light to carry around from work, home, and travelling, and was the laptop that I've used for most of my Master's degree and works well for typing long papers. The [Asus Chromebook Flip (1) at $259USD](https://www.amazon.com/C100PA-DB02-10-1-inch-Chromebook-1-8GHz-Operation/dp/B00ZS4HK0Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483771163&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+Chromebook+flip "Amazon Link to purchase") is nice, but in my opinion the keyboard is too cramped to be used as a computer to write anything longer than a facebook or reddit post, which I imagine why your original post requested info on 13"-ers, and 16Gb storage is too small for the future anyway.

I currently have the [Acer R13 at $399USD](https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Convertible-13-3-inch-CB5-312T-K5X4/dp/B01LXYG77O/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483771046&sr=1-1&keywords=acer+r+13 "Amazon Link to purchase") and it's great. I honestly can say it's overall the best computer I've ever owned and in my opinion the best value for a computer that money can buy. That being said, $400 is a lot of money for a student, but if you can afford it, it's definitley the one I'd recommend for you. The new ones that are coming out of CES, specifically the [Asus Chromebook C302 at $499USD](https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C302CA-DHM4-Traditional-Laptop-Silver/dp/B01N5G5PG2/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483771756&sr=1-1&keywords=Asus+Chromebook+C302 "Amazon Link to Pre-Order") and the [Samsung Chromebook Plus at $449USD](https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-XE513C24-K01US-Chromebook-Touch-Screen/dp/B01LZ6XKS6/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483771819&sr=1-2&keywords=samsung+chromebook+plus "Amazon Link to Pre-Order"), that will have touch and support android apps may run better but all cost more, will be harder or impossible to get now, and are arguably not a better value for the dollar. Back lit keyboards are nice but aren't a necessity for you I imagine!

Good luck on making a decision and let us know what you ultimately decide!

I'm in the exact same situation as you. I found this on Amazon. Problem is that I live in Canada and I have to do some more research into whether I am able to ship it here, but if you live in the US, you should be good. I also just checked Canada best buy and there was nothing on the book 2, but you should check US best buy too if you live there.

I have a 2-in-1 Chromebook that I absolutely adore taking on vacations and such when I know I need to be on a computer for personal use. Otherwise, I just carry around my iPad now. However, I'm thankful that for work, I now have a MUCH lighter touchscreen laptop. It makes it so much easier when I need to travel for work. Plus, having the work laptop, plus the Chromebook, in my carry on is much easier on my back.

this Dell Inspiron i7359-8404SLV is an ideal option for you to get. it comes with a decent Intel Dual Core i7-6500U 2.5 GHz Processor, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, a great screen display and a remarkable battery life. this PC will stream without hiccups, great for light gaming and decent for running your programs.

With all the specs you have laid out..Remember that your budget decides what you can get... $1000 somewhat limits you.. This MSI GE62 Apache Pro-239 does have decent specs and holds the Nvidia gtx 970 graphics card, 12 GB RAM, a powerful i7 quad core 6th generation processor etc, but it is 15.6 inches.

The MSI GE62 Apache Pro-239 would be perfect for you. It has a very good build quality and performance wise, it would be perfect for those games you will play. It has the GTX 970M graphics card, the powerful i7-6700HQ processor, 12 GB RAM and a brilliabt storage of a 1 TB HDD and 128 GB SSD.

u/SunriseMilkshake · 3 pointsr/LaptopDeals

If all you care about is processor speed, and even light gaming, for the money, this is an excellent opportunity. This $280 price used to only exist for used Lenovo 310s, and at release this laptop cost $450 new. So if you're under a strict budget of ~$300, get it. It's also one of the lightest "cheap" 15.6" laptops out there.

If you have more money to spare, try going for the Acer E15. Reason is, it has a better screen, a non-fucky shift key, and better battery life. You'll feel better using it, even though the specs are practically identical.
Also, you'll get awesome "tech support" through a Youtube channel called Tech Deals for the Acer E15; he goes into meticulous detail on how to make it run in tip top shape and how to upgrade it. Like really, this guy is my hero. Below is the playlist to all the videos he's done on the Acer E15:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5-PBA-wl9Uto4fL1RHBy3SEW6_4yDqss

Here's my personal story:
I started out looking for a ~$300 laptop, and even ordered this without opening it first so I can return it full refund just in case while I continue looking for something that would check off my needs/wants/wish list better. It's just that crazy of a deal.

I kept looking, and I've always wanted a laptop that looks "nice", has a nice looking touchscreen (to see what all the hype is about), is in the weight range of my stolen Acer C720 (2-3lbs), runs Windows, and has decent enough oomph while still acting as a secondary laptop to my main pooter.

I eventually bought the Asus Zenbook flip, last generation, for ~$500 in "like new" used condition. Here's the one I got:

ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA-UBM1T 13.3-inch Touchscreen Convertible Laptop Core m3 8GB DDR3 256GB SSD with Windows 10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HZT6AR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_f4mRybV0RFFBG

For the price, its perfect, and I'll be using it for years to come. Looks gorgeous and is light as a feather as well.

Good luck with your searches! As a general tip, my workflow for finding a laptop is thus:

  1. Define your budget.
  2. Don't be stingy with your budget if it will get you something you think you'll largely enjoy. You'll be using this all the time after all.
  3. Value is not only present in specs, but with the user experience as a whole. Screen color gamut, track pad jankiness, I/O ports, speakers, and keyboard feel are more important than you'd first think.
  4. Go out if you can and physically use the laptops you want to buy. You won't always find the exact model, but the same chassis are used with different processors/ram/memory configs. Use this opportunity to test if you like the screens, track pad, keyboard, weight, and looks of the product. This will also help you define what you really want out of a laptop and introduce you to some models you may have not payed attention to before.
  5. Define what you'll enjoy when you use your laptop. That will give you filter criteria for what you're looking for. Everyones needs are different. Hone in on the single component that is the biggest differentiating factor for your enjoyment and needs, then compare secondary specs between candidates.
  6. Enjoy the process.
  7. Don't be afraid to scroll past the first results page on Amazon. I've found some very interesting things this way, including this deal.
  8. Use video reviews to understand qualitative aspects of a laptop and see it physically in the real world.
  9. Use Passmark or Geekbench score repositories to gauge relative processor strength. Just Google the processor name followed by "Passmark" or "Geekbench". Gauge the price vs performance ratio as you go in your head, it's faster and easier this way.
  10. Don't forget to check Newegg and Best Buy for open box and refurbished deals if you've found "the one" but it's still a little too expensive. I saw an Acer E15 that goes for $350 on Amazon for $294 refurbished on Newegg.

    Good luck!!!
u/Ganrokh · 3 pointsr/WorkOnline

I've been working from home for a little under two years now. My setup is a little pricey, but I've paid for it working completely online, so that's a nice feeling.

I currently don't have a desk (won't have room until I move in with my girlfriend in a few months), so I work on a laptop for now. The laptop is a gaming laptop. I have a gaming laptop because, I'm not looking to simply "work" for an income. During the day, I work online while my laptop mines a cryptocurrency in the background. Crypto mining has definitely been a profitable venture for me. In the evening, I stream for a few hours on Twitch. I'm not a big established streamer, but I've made a little bit of income from streaming.

Because of not having a desk, I don't really have room for a second screen. However, I do have a Acer R11 Chromebook that I usually keep a couple Chrome tabs open to monitor various things. The touch screen is really nice as well.

My mouse is a Razer Naga. I am a man of efficiency and I believe that, for online workers like ourselves who are usually getting paid by getting work done and not by the hour, efficiency and productivity are key. The keypad on the side of the mouse work wonders. Being able to program different keys and even scripts to them is amazing. Some people prefer the Logitech equivalent to it.

The headset is going to ultimately come down to personal preference. There are many, many different headsets out that that come in all sorts of shapes and styles. Do you want over-the-ear? On-ear? Do you want the band to go over the head? Behind the head? Do you need a wireless headset because you have kids at home and you need to get up often? Reviews may not be too reliable as well. For example, with gaming headsets, if you go to any gaming forum or subreddit and ask about gaming headsets, people will have you believe that the HyperX Cloud II Headset is the greatest headset put on God's green earth. It just wasn't for me. It was a little tight on my head and the audio was a bit too "in my head", which gave me headaches. I much prefer the Astro A40 TR Headset.

Finally, you're going to want to protect your eyes. If you work online, you're going to be staring at a screen for hours on end. If you're looking at a screen, you're exposed to artificial blue light. Artificial blue light is meant to emulate sunlight. Exposing your eyes to it will strain your eyes, which can disrupt your sleeping patterns, cause headaches, elevate stress, etc. That's only in the short term. In the long term, well, screens emitting blue light haven't been around long enough yet, so we don't really know what the long term effects of it is. Still, you need to protect your eyes. There are a handful of companies that make glasses designed to specifically filter out blue light. When I used to wear specific glasses for this, my preferred brand was Gunnar Optiks. I say "used to wear" - I had to get prescription glasses recently and my eye doctor offered blue light protection in my glasses. I believe it's called "Prevencia". If you have to wear prescription glasses, ask about it next time you see your eye doctor.

Hope this helps!

Edit: I forgot to mention F.lux. F.lux is a program that reduces the amount of blue light your screen emits based on the time of day, emulating a sunset. At night, it gives your screen a red/orange lighting. At night, after the sun has set and F.lux kicks on on my screen, I take my glasses off. It's a very nice program.

The Acer R11 is a really great Chromebook. I picked one up for much more than $200 (Canadian price lol) but it's worth it, it's a really great machine. I've been using it for ~ a week now. I see it listed for $259.99 on Amazon.com; not bad!

u/ManletPrideParade · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I have the Toshiba Chromebook 2 - 2015 Edition. Obviously, it's several years old at this point, but still works really well for me. Has held up to frequent use. My girlfriend had the same model, and uses hers a lot more (it's her primary computer). Neither of us have had any issues. She upgraded to an Acer Chromebook R13 Convertible last summer and has loved it as well. Would recommend either model.

u/Emo_chipmunk · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Pretty sure it's this one here
Almost every chromebook has very short boot times. Like 10 seconds or less. They are almost always typically lightweight. They do all the basics you would need for school. You won't get the Microsoft office suite, but you can use the Google alternatives. Also, it runs on chrome OS so it's optimized to run well even on low end specs.

Hmmm. Well the 3500u is better than the 2200 u processor wise. It's on the newer 12 nm node:

https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-Graphics/dp/B07PB5M8DS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=lenovo+ryzen+2+in+1&qid=1557083671&s=electronics&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1

The above model has a few reviews as well. The 256GB SSD is also a plus, at least vs. the 128 GB models.

It's at the upper end of your price range, but is a bit faster. Here's a quick benchmark comparison:

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-2500U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3500U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-2200U/3123vs3421vs3152

https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Ryzen-5-3500U-Processor.391081.0.html

If you want to use up your budget and get a quality laptop consider the Lenovo Yoga 720 2-in-1

· 15.6" 4K UHD IPS Touch-Screen 90% sRGB (Argyll 3D) 59% AdobeRGB

· Intel Core i7-7700HQ,

· 16GB RAM,

· 512GB SSD,

· NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050,

· Thunderbolt, Fingerprint Reader, Backlit Keyboard

This laptop balances work and play with its powerful GPU and its 2 in 1 features which is ideal for drawing, editing and other creative work. It has a color accurate display which is ideal for editing and 4k resolution is a big plus as well. 4k resolution does eat at battery life but you will still be able to get a bit over 7 hours from a full charge if you are using it casually. It has a good port selection with Thunderbolt being the best one as an eGPU can be added if you want more gaming power in the future. Build wise it has an aluminum chassis which is rigid and there is also little flex on the screen

If you want to get a cheaper laptop let me know and I would suggest something else

If you're actually thinking about buying an Apple computer you shouldn't. I have a Lenovo Yoga 720 and at a comparable price to the lower end Macbooks like the Air, it competes with the top-end ones on specs. Larger, higher resolution screen with not much extra weight, full touchscreen with good pen support, solid battery life, an actual GPU, and better compatibility with software.

Chromebook Pro:

  • $499
  • beautiful, bright display
  • 3:2 screen ratio
  • stylus

    ASUS C302:

  • $429
  • 16:9 screen ratio
  • amazing keyboard
  • keyboard is also backlit

I own the Chromebook Pro and my son has the C302. They're both great, but I prefer the 3:2 amazing screen and the stylus of the Chromebook Pro to the amazing keyboard on the C302.

EDIT: emphasis on C302's keyboard, backlight, and Pro's display.

Hello, I am not a Chromebook user but I am very interested in them.

You can definitely go for any Chromebook around $500, they typically have 4gb ram, 32/64gb storage, and intel core m3 processor. If you are willing to pay few hundreds more, there's a discount on Amazon for Google Pixelbook, with i5 processor, 8gb ram and 128gb storage for $846. There's also one good thing about this device, you can install linux applications on it.

If you are not interested in paying that money for Google Pixelbook, you can go with ASUS C302CA-DHM4.

Enjoy it!!

How about this?

u/Julius_Siezures · 3 pointsr/spiders

First of all I'd recommend going to arachnoboards.com and signing up and heading over to r/tarantulas. Now with that out of the way the general run of the mill recommendation is juvenile-young adult new world terrestrial species. Now let's break that down:

Tarantulas are broadly classified into two broad groups: new world and old world. Differences are mainly old world species are not from either north or south America (generally Africa or Asia) they tend to be quicker, more defensive, they do not have urticating setae (small irritating hairs on the abdomen) and have more potent venom. New world have urticating setae, are from the Americas, and tend to be less defensive, slower, and less venomous. So new world species are the obvious choice to a beginner.

The reason it's recommended to get a juvenile is due to the fact that while overall a relatively easily cared for pet, slings are quite fragile still and require much more attention, a juvenile still leaves you with room to watch your pet grow up but not so young that it's easier to take care of and it's less dangerous for the spider if you make a mistake or two as a beginner.

As for terrestrial? Again arboreal species tend to be harder for a new keeper to get used to.

Now finally the question is what are you looking for in a tarantula? The points I suggested above are more guidelines than hard rules (but with special emphasis on starting with new world not old world) I myself started with a little G. pulchripes sling, not a common recommendation for a beginner due to their extremely slow growth rate and the fact that again slings aren't the best for beginners. Despite that I knew I wanted one I could watch grow from the beginning and I was ready to make the possible decade long commitment so I went for it. Do you want one that's a heavy webber, or one with bright colours? Maybe go for a C. cyanopubescens. One that grows quickly and large? Try L. parahybana. A classic? B. hamorii. Something fuzzy? B. albopilosum. Or even what I started with: G. pulchripes. All good starter species.

A relatively common suggestion is G. rosea/porteri. They are abundant in the tarantula pet trade, and generally are decent starter species but have also known to sometimes be aggressive. The community here tends to lean on saying not to start with them but I personally think it's relatively the same as other starter species I mentioned. The consensus is pretty split.

On a final note: do your research! Before buying anything, make sure you're plenty ready to house your pet when they arrive, different species require slightly different setups. I'd recommend The Tarantula Keepers Guide it contains some very solid (and some outdated) info. It's an excellent starting point however. There are some sections that you should take with a grain of salt, but as of now it's one of the better comprehensive guides out there. The alternative being scouring various parts of the internet to try and cobble together a working knowledge.

That Lenovo should do a decent job for you but if you would want to play any games at all while away from your PC, then this Acer Aspire R 15 with similar specs, but a dedicated graphics card, more RAM and a better quality display would do a better job for you.

Hi,

It really depends on what money are you prepared to spend with it - from you're requirements you could do with a budget of 600-800 dollars.

Well...I'll give it a shot - based on your requirements I have made this noteb search

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

I know you said you don't care for 2in1 but if you want a touchscreen maybe you'll like it: Acer Spin 5 SP513-52 (2018) - Intel i5-8250U, Intel HD Graphics 620, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 13.3 inch display - made of aluminium, 3.53 lbs, a battery of over 8H - you can find it around 710$ on amazon - I don't know if it's to your liking but it's a start :)

u/wackyman3000 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Yeah, checked the Lightroom benchmarks and that wouldn't have been able to handle it. Ended up going with this Acer Spin 5 which i found refurbished for $530. Seems like it'll fit my needs quite well. Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it.

u/Haeges · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I agree with LonerlM2's suggestion, but I can also suggest the Acer Aspire R 15 (costs 800$). Here is a quick glance at the specs:

  • 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7500U Processor (Up to 3.5GHz)
  • 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Multi-touch widescreen LED-backlit IPS display
  • NVIDIA GeForce 940MX with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM
  • 12GB DDR4 Memory
  • 256GB SSD
  • Up to 9-hours Battery Life
  • 0.79 inch thin and weights 4.7lbs

    Hope that'll help!
u/bor4etyy · 2 pointsr/laptops
u/m0rogfar · 2 pointsr/laptops

It's not that great, and the discount is probably fake. Most of the internal components are rather old, so they may be using an old price as the base, and the Y-series hasn't aged too well.

If you can do everything in a browser, then you'll want something like this.

u/Whazzits · 2 pointsr/TheMixedNuts

Sounds like you do a lot of carrying around, so I'm going to recommend Chromebooks for how small they are.You can find models for less than $500 easy. Downsides are that you have to jump through some hoops to set up iTunes, and the same sort of business for Steam (if that's what you use for gaming).

After that's done, though, aside from those two points, chromebooks are very easy to own and operate. It uses the internet a lot to store things, and doesn't have a lot of internal storage, so be aware of that, but for your relatively lightweight needs it's a lot of bang for your buck.

$200

$470

If that doesn't sound like your jam, and you want a more "real" laptop, I'd suggest Lenovo brand. They're reliable, robust, and tend to be fairly cheap.

$250

$490, if you select 8Gb and 512Gb respectively (which is what I recommend)

Someone recently posted a chart of country's who are using Chrome OS.. in the Uk it was something like 0.6%.. For this reason I doubt Samsung would be profitable to change the keyboard layout etc at this time.

In the last month ive noticed Chromebooks have started to be advertised on TV in the uk.. also Pc World is doing a 90 day try and return for Chromebooks so maybe when they pick up in the Uk Samsung will start selling here..

Until then its Amazon US or eBay.

These are a bit more expensive than the run of the mill chromebook because they are a bit higher end and support the android play store. Also, in my experience the best chromebooks I've ever used. (I started using them at the CR48)

CPU: i7-7700HQ

GPU: GeForce GTX 1050

RAM: 16

Display: 4k UHD 15.6 touchscreen IPS screen

Long battery life

It is a great choice because of its great heat management system and high build quality, along with its specifications makes it the best option for your usage and it is within your budget.

I'm using the Lenovo Yoga 720 15" for uni and gaming. i5/i7 HQ CPU, GTX1050 GPU, 265 nvmE SSD and 8gb ram- good for 1080p gaming and more than enough for uni use. 2in1 tablet mode is also very helpful for taking notes on pdf files in class. Its definitely larger and heavier than the Air (I used to have one too), but its on the smaller/lighter side of 15" laptops and the battery life is very solid.

Perhaps the following 14" Lenovo Flex 14 2-in-1 with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500u APU, 1080p touchscreen and pen included. It also comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB PCie NVMe SSD. The vega 8 most likely will be enough for inventor. At 730 price tag, this is a great option if you also want to take notes using your laptop.

u/TheBoed9000 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I recently picked up this Lenovo from Amazon. Typing on it right now. It's my work laptop/living room "iPad" all in one. Pen included in purchase. Can even take notes on it if I feel the need (pen + one note).

Limitations are the SSD - it's super fast, but 250gb isn't a lot of storage - and the RAM. The RAM is actually 4gb soldered on for the Vega integrated graphics, and a 4gb removable; so you can actually upgrade it. I'll probably throw in an 8gb from my retiring gaming laptop when I upgrade the SSD.

Do not regret spending the money at all.

u/UsePreparationH · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

Personally I would just do the crucial one since it is $1 cheaper from Amazon and the g.skill one should run at the same latency/timings once installed. If it doesn't, playing around in the BIOS may not be fun for some people.

This review also used the crucial ram for the upgrade. It does note you need a T5 screwdriver.

This 2 in 1 is a pretty good deal, it was just feature in a linus tech tips video with a lot of praise. It's got Vega 8 graphics so it can handle some light gaming too.

It's not under $500, but honestly anything under that isn't worth getting.

u/Spacechicken27 · 2 pointsr/Laptop

Everyone I know that has gotten a chrome book didn’t like it. Most started falling apart (the older models) and the Os was annoying. And they couldn’t manage things as they wanted like on a Windows. I believe you can get something for the gas power if not better in the price range. For the <$900 mark I would be looking for something like this:

CPU: 8th generation Intel Processor, most likely i5-8(something)U, or at best i7-8750h

GPU: If not for gaming it really is not needed to have a separate graphics card, integrated graphics like an mx150 will do find for most video watching and stuff. May become a little slower if using photoshop heavily or other programs like CAD’ing

RAM: looking. For 8+ Gb DDR4. Should be able to handle everything you’re looking at doing

Memory: look for an SSD, try to get over half a Tb (512Gb) as that will give you space in the future. Maybe a SSD and HDD mix could work as you used the SSD for faster boot and load times, and the HDD for storage.

Screen: I don’t know how much color correct stuff you will be using, but maybe a 4K or touchscreen may be nice on your preference

Based on that here are a couple I could think of after a quick googling:

$810 Acer Spin 3: seems like a decent one, has a nice i7-8565U processor, 16Gb DDR4, 512Gb NVMe SSD with fingerprint reader and stylus. Also is o a tablet laptop with some people really like.

$588 Lenovo Ideapad: If you want to go a cheaper route this looks decent, a nice i5-8250U processor with 8GB DDR4 memory. The main drawback I see is the 1Tb HDD, which would give you significant battery but also take significantly longer to load applications and boot up. It does have a optical drive (DVD) which most laptops don’t have anymore however.

Just search and look around, watch some reviews, you can find one great for you!

I have a refurb Acer Chromebook R11 that is running crouton for applications like ViM and occasionally Libreoffice. This augments my aging Lenovo T430 laptop that is still my primary workhorse. I do use the Acer daily; however, I only use it for browsing and light editing.

Things I like

  • fast to start up
  • long battery life
  • quick to charge
  • light enough to travel with (though not as small as my poor Asus T100HA that was damaged when it fell from a stool and landed on the charging cable that was plugged in) and capable enough to handle 90% of what I need to do when I'm traveling
  • keyboard is pretty good for extended writing; and I am able to edit with vim that is my preferred writing platform

    Things I don't like

  • It doesn't have the Thinkpad joystick
  • It's not really very good for photo editing/processing (my Thinkpad hard drive is much larger and faster; my Thinkpad has 16Gb of RAM) or for video editing.
u/end-it · 2 pointsr/visualnovels

i bought this one a while back and it works fine for VNs, aside from it overheating a ton if you try to run a VN inside of a winXP VM! (which still works okay i guess)

the price does seem a little inflated from what i bought it at about a year ago but should still be low-ish. mostly thirdparty sales though. I'm sure there's other decent ones on amazon that are also in that resolution range worth buying...

they're definitely becoming rarer though yes

Again, you only need 64Bit for utilizing more than 3,5gigs of ram.

But i wont lie, you will notice that you only have 2gigs of ram, especially after having at last >15 tabs in chrome open (because chrome and tabs kills ram).
And the Atoms are not i3’s. But the TDP is awesome, and so its silent and runs for at least 8 hours.

Well a question I have is will you be putting any hefty files onto this computer?

This is where you need to ask yourself if you need 1TB. Yes, it seems like the standard these days, but I would personally have a 128GB SSD on a laptop than a 1TB HDD. The difference is a HDD or Hard Drive Disk, has mechanical parts. These parts move physically, thus take more time to load virtual data. An SSD or Solid State Drive has no moving parts, the storage drive uses flash memory, thus loading and working a lot quicker than a traditional mechanical HDD.

The benefits of an SSD are obvious. They are in general quicker, but more expensive per GB, while a HDD will offer raw storage capacity at reasonable speeds.

So in saying that, I recommend either this lenovo 2-in-1 or I would point you towards a machine that has solid-state storage built in like this Dell 2-in-1 with an i7 and 250gb of SSD storage

Both are good choices, but you need to consider if you need speed or raw storage.

u/mrnose20 · 2 pointsr/computers

It really comes down to how much experiance you have with set up of a machine and how big you want your screen to be. I would steer cleer of the linked Dell Inspiron 7567. that was linked, to be honest. It uses a very low quality display. The picture is washed out and it isn't good at producing dark colors. The difference between a good display and a not-so-good one is easily one of the most noticeable things, and you can certainly do better. It's one of those laptops where the specs look good on paper, but the actual product falls short.

For gaming in particular a poor quality display can be considered to defeat some of the purpose of buying a gaming laptop: to make games look better. For gaming, I would make your priorities: Good GPU + Good Display. You will notice those the most. CPU will matter less since both the i5 quad and i7 quad are plenty for most games when paired with a GTX 1050 or Ti, RAM is easily upgradable, and SSD is easily upgradable.

---

One of the best values right now is the $899 Eluktronics N850HK1. It has:

  • A GTX 1050 Ti (same as the higher models of the Inspiron)
  • A 1920x1080 IPS display with good contrast and good colors (specifically the LG LP156WF6-SPB1 if you want to get technical, which is one of the best)

Eluktronics may be less well-known than Dell, but it's one of a number of resellers who buy Clevo laptops in bulk, configure them, and sell them. Perhaps a more well-known reseller is Sager, but Sager's version of this laptop costs $100 more.

EDIT: Model I linked is the $899 1080p+1TB model which is currently sold out. Currently redirects to the $999 4K model, which uses a PenTile not-true-4K display. I would recommend waiting until the $899 1080p+1TB model comes back in stock. There's also a $999 1080p+SSD model.

  • Lenovo Y520 (should be $899 with GTX 1050 and similar display to the Acer VX 15, when released this month)

More models I would suggest to avoid due to poor quality displays:

  • Sager NP5855
  • Prostar N855HJ
  • MSI GL62M, models with the "Vivid Color 94%" display
  • MSI GP62MVR, unless the specs specifically state IPS-level
  • ASUS GL502VT, Best Buy model with the 970M
  • ASUS K501UW, ZX53VW, FX502VM, FZ50VW, ZX50VW (update: ZX53VW display is good! I was mistaken)

With a quad core processor and of course 12 GB or more RAM would be ideal this laptop is the laptop of your dreams. A dedicated graphics card I would also recommend as well. This XOTIC MSI GE62 Apache Pro laptop would do an outstanding job in high level gaming . It has an excellent processor for that purpose in the i7 quadcore 6th generation skylake processor , 16 GB RAM which is fantastic and of course it has a wonderful storage of 1 TB HDD in addition to an 128GB M.2 SSD which is extremely fast. It also has a nice dedicated graphics card, solid back-lit keyboard and good touch pad as well as a very good 6 cells battery pack which will give you some decent hours charged. It weighs only 5.3 lbs which should be good for you.

I bought this for $499 on amazon about a week ago when it was discounted, but upon further research, found it again for the same price.

Good luck!

u/hubbletastic · 2 pointsr/chromeos

If a top-of-the-line CPU isn't a big necessity, the Acer R 11 sounds like it fits the bill. The Asus Flip is another option. It has a 10.1" screen versus the 11.6" with the R 11.

Both of these Chromebooks are convertibles that have Play Store support right now. The 2955U in the C720 seems to get around 12K in Octane, so you'd be getting a slower CPU (at least in single-core applications) with either of the Chromebooks I mentioned (both get around the 7-8K range).

u/Kysersoze79 · 2 pointsr/chromeos

So, you can get an R11 at amazon right now for $250

Its the 32gb (vs 16gb) version, and its a slightly older quad core vs dual core celeron.

So if you figure you can save $70 off that price, but you have to GO to bestbuy on black friday, then sure its totally worth it.

This is on my short list to get for my 7yr old, since it can flip over, and run android apps, and double as a (fat) tablet. They currently use the asus c100 now, so this would be similar. I haven't seen any deals on the asus c101, so i'm thinking the acer might win out.

u/glymao · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The biggest problem is display. Most 2-in-1 devices only have 720p or 800p screens, which is worse than 1080p; if that is okay, you can visit amazon for this, it uses Rockchip RK3399 that is comparable to Intel m3/m5. But there are also other cheaper choices available.

u/ilikemyrealname · 2 pointsr/chromeos

I think I have the top of the line one, and it's on sale right now on Amazon. Might be helpful, especially if you have Prime. PS. I absolutely love the device. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Convertible-11-6-Inch-CB5-132T-C1LK/dp/B01J42JPJG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487205769&sr=8-1&keywords=r11

An Acer CB R11 might be what you're looking for.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Convertible-11-6-Inch-CB5-132T-C1LK/dp/B01J42JPJG/

11.6" IPS screen...Not 1080p, but at that size 768p should be good enough. It's touch screen and convertible...Don't know if that's something you want or not. It's on sale for $259 right now.

If you don't want a touchscreen/convertible...Here's something that's under your budget:

https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

Still 11.6" and IPS (I believe), and enough for what you want.

How about the Acer Chromebook R 11. This 2 in 1 laptop has pretty decent specs for its price range with an Intel Celeron N3150 Quad-Core Processor 1.6GHz with Intel Burst Technology up to 2.08GHz, 4 gb ram, up to 10 hours battery life, 32 gb internal storage, Intel HD Graphics card. Provides a decent performance for its price. I strongly suggest stepping up to a Chromebook with a quad core Celeron N3150 or an i3. The N3050 in the Chromebook 3 is quite a bit weaker than the N3150.

This machine has an N3150 and 4GB of RAM... and it's also convertible into a tablet form.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01J42JPJG/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile this is the r11 right?(or are there different versions) I just realised it is not rated as "rugged". Do you think the Asus n7 would be more rugged than your r11? (We have a very klutzy dog)

u/BangleWaffle · 2 pointsr/hardware

It's an aluminum chassis, so yes, it's heavier than plastic ones. Unless you're comparing it to the Macbook Air? You have to trade off some things obviously. There's plenty of other options out there for excellent chromebooks that are well below $600. If size is a concern, the Acer Chromebook R 13 may be of interest. Very similar in size and half a pound heavier (personally I don't think half a pound is all that big a concern).

Here's a decent comparison site that lets you sort them in a number of ways

I've honestly never needed more than 4GB of ram on my chromebook. Unless you have a shit-ton of tabs open at every moment, you're 100% fine with 4GB. I had an old chromebook with just 2GB and it was fine. I'd absolutely say that personally, I am getting "the same functionality compared to 8gb."

u/lyam23 · 2 pointsr/Android

Yes, I've used the Toshiba Chromebook 1st series (my first CB), an Asus Flip 1st gen (first 2-in-1), and now I have just purchased this Samsung Chromebook Plus.

I spent a lot of time going back and forth between this and the comparable Asus 302. Ultimately went with the Plus becuase:

  • Cheaper
  • better screen
  • I had hands on testing with this one.

I love it so far (only have a couple hours of playtime with it to date) and recommend it. My only complaint is the mushy keyboard and the Wifi is a little weaker than my other 2 chromebooks. I love the screen and the unusual aspect ratio. The stylus is pretty great, too.
u/VictoryGoth · 2 pointsr/chromeos

It's currently discounted to $406.90 USD. I'm not sure if that's the official Prime Day price or if it will drop lower tomorrow.

If your grandmother doesn't need any particular Windows program, maybe consider a Chromebook such as the Samsung Chromebook Plus:

Chrome OS is secure and hard to mess up, which should reduce tech support calls from your grandmother.

The Samsung Chromebook Plus's build quality is excellent, with an aluminum chassis and high quality display. The screen is very bright at 400nit (most monitors are 250-300nit). The screen size in terms of diagonal length is 12.3 inches, but the screen's more even 3:2 aspect ratio (compared to typical widescreen monitors with a 16:9 ratio) makes better use of that space. Plus, since it's a touchscreen convertible, you're more likely to hold it closer to your face like a tablet.

The Samsung Chromebook Plus can also run Android apps from the Google Play Store, such as Microsoft Office for Android (e.g. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) or pretty much any other app.

The built-in stylus is also pretty good, but I don't know if your grandmother is interested in drawing or note taking. There's also a Pro model that's supposed to be coming out later this year, but the only difference is the CPU. (The Plus uses an ARM processor like most smartphones and tablets, while the Pro uses an Intel CPU like most laptops and desktops; the Intel CPU should be a bit stronger but the ARM processor has better compatibility with Android apps, which is probably why the Pro has been delayed so Google and Samsung can sort that out.)

If you are returning it, have a look at this laptop it is also 400 dollar. It is a bit short on storage, but if you are just planning to use it for content cunsuming, word and work mostly in the cloud it should do the job.

What do you think?

u/StarWistStuff · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

Hey, I'm going to update my request. I posted earlier in the week and had time to think this weekend.

Reflections:

  • Shopping for laptops is stressful; almost every lower-budget machine has big trade-offs these days!
  • Lots of cheaper machines make compromises on basic quality of life; screen, keyboard, touchpad and so on..
  • I really like the aesthetic of the Asus Zenbooks with the Ergo-Hinge, but they're all very different model to model.
  • I've noticed QA issues amongst the reviews for products with the R5-3500u/3700u as well as heat/noise concerns. In retrospect these are issues that I don't want to gamble on; which also makes the Lenovo Flex 14'' & APU's less attractive.
  • The Flex 14'' is a really good value and has a pretty secure spot at being a 2nd or 3rd choice.
  • Something I've realized is that I don't really need a dedicated GDDR5 GPU like the MX150 or MX250.

    General Usage Habits:

  • 10-15 Firefox Tabs
  • Youtube, Spotify, Pandora.
  • Netflix, Amazon Prime, Streaming.
  • I'd like to play around w/ Linux.

Budget: Initially; $400-600; but concern with build quality pushes me towards < $1000

Country: USA ~Getting to a Microcenter, BestBuy or Walmart isn't a problem.

    Screen size: 13-14'' -- 1080p; prefer SSD & 8GB of RAM.

Screen resolution: Prefer 1080p with solid brightness & good viewing angles.

    Heat:

Sound: I'll likely bring my soundbar/headphones, but sound isn't unimportant.

Touch screen: Depends; I think it's almost mandatory for Chromebooks & less so for laptops.

Battery Life: I want something that's fairly powerful but can last a full school day (5-10 hours).

Weight**: Less than 5 lbs; considering various Chromebooks & Ultrabooks; the lighter the better.

    Tl;DR - Laptops & Chromebooks that I'm considering:

    Laptops:

  1. Asus Zenbook UX333FA-DH51 $840
  2. Asus Vivobook S14-S432 & S15-S532 $750-900
  3. Acer Aspire Slim 5: A515-54G-53H6 $650
  4. Lenovo Flex 14'' R5-3500u $560
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-flex-series/Lenovo-IdeaPad-FLEX-15IWL/p/88IP8FX1272 (Lenovo Holiday sales ~ 10th Gen Intel = nice integrated graphics (for me anyway..)
  5. ASUS ZenBook 13 UX333FA-DH51
  6. HP Spectre x360 15-ch011dx Convertible

I know that I could get better "value" - with a 10th gen i5 & an MX250 w/ the Acer Aspire Slim 5. The hardware is better, but I find the build quality concerning because this is a machine that'll go pretty much everywhere with me. The Vivobook, while less expensive loses a lot of battery life compared to the UX333FA; which I'm considering picking up used or possibly on Ebay because I love the aesthetic and getting it for ~ $700 is a much more competitive deal for me.

Edit (adding some Microcenter deals) UX333FA-DH51 is @ $800 & HP Spectre x360 is at $850/800 too.

Keep an eye on this guy, it went on sale for around $450 on Prime Day and I expect it to go on sale for Black Friday too! I own the Ryzen 7, 3700U version from Costco and I love it! It's got a great Windows Precision trackpad, above average keyboard with backlighting, fingerprint sensor that works well, active pen support, touch screen, and it's a convertible. Battery life is average with around 5-6 hours in my use. Powerful little machine.

I think there are a few different models, but the one that seems to suit your needs and price point best is the one with the m3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB drive, I think it should be the Asus C302CA. In the US it's available on Amazon, and from pretty much every electronics retail store (Best Buy, etc). I don't think it will be difficult to track down.

Here's the US Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/C302CA-DHM4-Chromebook-12-5-inch-Touchscreen-Convertible/dp/B01N5G5PG2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523311657&sr=8-1&keywords=c302

The other models come with core m5 or m7 processors, which are extreme overkill for what a Chromebook needs, and go for $200 - $400 more than the m3 version.

This is the real CPU spec and why the price difference:

Also, not sure where you are and how you get US$600+ price for the asus. Maybe you were looking at the overpriced m5 one? The m3 is plenty for Chrome OS and already ran at the chassis' thermal limit on full load.

Depends on what you're looking for and whether you're okay with refurb/open box machines. At your price point, you can even get some of the 2-in-1 machines if you find a sale. Here is one at Best Buy for $199 (same machine in red is $189) right now that will run Linux, but I don't think it has Android Apps because it lacks a touchscreen. Here's one for around $230 that has been one of the best value CBs for like 2 years running, and it has a touchscreen. Both those models have SD/microSD card slots to expand storage and they . If you can dig a little deeper AND don't mind used, this is the one I own, currently going for less than $300 for a used one, but I totally understand if that's above your price ceiling. It's just the only one I can personally speak to that's moderately recent (and I love it! it's fantastic and definitely supports Linux and Android apps, plus I have a 128 GB micro SD expanding the storage literally right now as I type this. I'll probably be using it until the end of service date 3 years from now). But you'd be alright with anything on this list, which is all the devices that support enabling the Linux environment. Can't go wrong with the big names (Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, etc).

Speaking of enabling the Linux environment, it is currently optional and you have to do some things to enable it after you get a machine off that list (if you do) to prove you know what you're doing, I guess. r/Crostini has an excellent wiki should you decide to go the chromebook route, with a getting started guide that can really help. The best part is, ChromeOS takes way less system resources than even Win10- that same Inspiron 3000 hardware that u/QuestionThrowaway404 rightfully said chugs even with added RAM is decently snappy when a smaller OS is on it. Good luck, whatever you end up choosing and let me know if you have more questions, I'll see what I can find out!

This is not the official Prime Day price since the seller is not Amazon.com but B&E Corp (fulfilled by Amazon). Amazon's current price is $412.68. Also, this has been the price in the past week or so.

Going throw my vote in with a chromebook + decent desktop. I've got this for note taking for around $300 used, and have a sturdy PC at home for more intensive work

u/olhas · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I am in the exact same situation and I also very much like the Aero 15. If money isn't an issue for you, go for it, because as you said, the hardware won't be outdated any time soon, so I think you're good for 5+ years of fairly good performance.
However, if you want something a little less expensive, I found that the Lenovo Yoga 720 offers pretty high specs for a pretty low price.

Im in engineering and i uses an asus flip 14. Its been great for me and has everything you will need. Sounds like you need a MX150 and an i7 and at 1'200$ you'll be able to find some great systems with specs better than what I recommend:

  • Asus ZenBook Flip (yes, it has a touchsceen, but it also has the specs and size requirements...)
  • Dell Inspiron 5000
  • Asus VivoBook S
  • Asus VivoBook S
  • Asus VivoBook

Obviously, the GTX1050 will outperform the MX150 and the more RAM the system has - the better as you're going to be editing videos and if you need the storage, make sure the system has an HDD. All of them have an i7, so on the side of the processor you should be fine. I gave you a few options so you can pick based on price and requirements.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I might do what 8_BIT_FOND suggested as another option and go with a [Lenovo Yoga 720 $1339] (https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Yoga-15-6-Touch-Screen-Thunderbolt/dp/B072M22XK8) and a [Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Gaming Box $699] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076PZ6PRK/ref=psdc_284822_t1_B073PYMG3G). I don't understand why the gtx1080 box is cheaper than the 1070, but whatever.. Only $100 more for the 1080 than the 1060. I have no idea, but it seems like a good deal : \

I just need to figure out if it will work together. I'll probably be dragging my feet for a month or three. In the meantime, maybe NMS will get the shit optimized out of it and will run adequately enough for me without needing the egpu box (ha ha).

First reddit post, so be nice.I have been looking at a chromebook over the past few months to replace my ipad mini 3 while also being useful as a way into the google ecosystem, as i have recently switched from office to docs etc and am looking at getting a google pixel to replace my samsung a5. I have concluded that the samsung plus is my best option, as i will be primarily watching youtube, doing google docs, playing android apps and surfing the web on it. I say this due to the 1440p display, it being thin and light so it can be more of a tablet, and a 3;2 aspect ratio. The pen is also a bonus. I have also looked at the lenovo 300/500e, asus c302/c101/c213 and acer r13/11, however did conclude that the chromebook plus was my best option.

However a major issue with this is that the chromebook plus is not sold in the uk, so i am struggling to find ways to purchare it and get it to the uk. So far i have found two different listings of the chromebook plus on amazon.com:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZ6XKS6/?tag=comparechrome-20

https://www.amazon.com/2017-Flagship-Samsung-Convertible-Chromebook/dp/B075BPC5X8/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522173775&sr=1-3&keywords=samsung+chromebook+plus&dpID=51oOypKfgvL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Convertible-Touchscreen-Chromebook-Plus/dp/B0733W31VZ/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522173803&sr=1-5&keywords=samsung+chromebook+plus&dpID=41nHWWEZQoL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Convertible-Touchscreen-Chromebook-Speakers/dp/B072TYXKS8/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522173803&sr=1-6&keywords=samsung+chromebook+plus

I have not found another store selling the chromebook other than amazon.com that ships to the uk, if that does exist please tell me! I do have amazon prime, so that takes out delivery cost for prime items. However, i would like it new so that eliminates most of the options. I also wish to stay under £350 pounds max, so about $500, and that includes import tax and delivery. Is it worth going for the plus, or should i just give in and get the c302 or something simular? Is there any other place that sells it where i would be able to get it shipped to the uk? I am open to 3rd party shippers, but are not sure on their reliability and pricing. Thanks in advance for any advice. I will be ordering within the next month. Which seller of the chromebook plus on amazon is the most reliable and well priced, as i could not find it directly sold by amazon. Thanks!

Hey there. I was about to make a post, but we have nearly identical budget, preferences, and needs for a laptop. So I'm going to piggyback, and link a few of the options I'm considering, and maybe we can both get some more advice.

ASUS C302CA

Samsung Plus

I'm considering these two if I go for a chromebook. You pretty much wouldn't be able to game on these at all due to the OS. The samsung has a built in stylus if you plan to do notetaking with it. They're both lightweight/durable so they seem good for travel. I plan on running crouton for added versatility and coding development. And tbh I like the idea of a polished macbook feel.

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4

These are the two windows notebooks I'm considering. The first seems like a hard value to beat, and the price bump on the second seems worthit if you want the faster processor, SSD, more ram (although the first is easily upgraded), and some light gaming capabilities.

Overall, for me the choice is coming down to whether I want the 2 in 1 tablet + touchscreen/stylus notetaking capabilities, added portability, and lighter weight chromebook, or the software versatility and comfort of having a windows notebook I'm more familiar with. Let me know what you think please!

I am looking for a Chromebook that is light, has good battery life, a touch screen, and the ability to use android apps.

Right now I am eyeballing this guy : https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZ6XKS6/

I don't want to spend a lot, I am just looking for something to use while hanging out in the living room or on the porch.

Thoughts?

u/martheen · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Nitpicking, but what you called "memory" isn't SSD, memory is RAM while SSD & HD are storage, the 'red button' is trackpoint or any other name. Kinda prudent to know more about computer if you're going to code for it.

For programming you want as much memory as you can get. The 8GB of Swift 3 as recommended by /u/edit1754 should be enough for early course, unfortunately its RAM is soldered without additional slot to upgrade. Chrome is lightweight in RAM usage when compared to IDEs, webserver and VMs.

Acer Spin 5 is bit smaller (13" despite the name), same price with Swift 3 (14"), with upgradeable RAM & storage and otherwise specs. You can grab it now, upgrade to 16 GB in later semester when you need it.

u/sniper344 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The Acer Spin 5 is the laptop your looking for.A 13.3inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) Multi-touch widescreen LED-backlit IPS display sweet and neat in my eyes, with a 6th Generation Intel Core i5-6200U Processor perfect for you, 8GB DDR4 of ram, 256GB SSD for storage with up to 10 hours of battery life and a weight of 3.53lbs, Windows 10 you will so love it :-). Games like civ 6 can be played on it.

u/gen10 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I recently picked up the Acer Aspire R 15 2017 for ~$495 after tax at Bestbuy off a slickdeal that was going on. Im kind of having buyers remorse as im seeing these quadcore i5 laptops some even with dedicated GPU's (which isn't by any means necessary) but would be nice to have and I figure I could pay $100 more for quad care and potentially get some gaming out of it too I would.

Size wise I like it, im a college student but I wouldn't mind a smaller 13" laptop but still want to keep the 2-1 and touchscreen aswell as the 1080p IPS and SUPERB aluminum build quality and feel. SSD isn't an issue for me since I plan to replace it with my 250GB samsung 840 evo anyway. I still got till next-next Wednesday to decide wether to return or not and to see what else comes up. Im scared this dual core i5u processor wont hold up for the next 2-3 years which is why im looking into the quadcore lineup. Lighter would be nicer too around 3-4lbs if possible and gaming definitely isn't needed since its for college and I already have a gaming pc at home.

So a 13", 2-1 1080p IPS, quadcore i5/i7 (maybe or dual core? IDK), 8GB ram, HDD or SSD is ok (since ill be upgrading), longer battery life and nice build quality is what im looking for . Something on the lighter side. At most looking to spend $600.
Sorry for the long writeup but i've never really shopped around for a laptops until now. Also im assuming used and refurbished laptops bought on amazon come with no warranty? Also something with a nice feeling trackpad with good scrolling. Is lenovo good for these?

Also how does the Intel Core m3-6Y30 Processor compare to the i5 7200u or the like i5's?

These for portability is what ive narrowed it down too:

https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX360CA-UBM1T-13-3-inch-Touchscreen-Convertible/dp/B01HZT6AR0 ($450 used)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01GHQOD8U/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all ($530 used newer model)

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Swift-i5-6200U-Windows-SF314-51-52W2/dp/B01LWZ7JB2 (better processor similar size $620)

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Touch-Windows-Convertible-SP513-51-55ZR/dp/B01M18YU9I (better processer $540 used)

Debating on these with GPU's:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRTG0JF (ddr4, worse gpu than dell but seems to be better quality.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B015PYYDMQ (afraid of dell build quality)

u/Clutch_22 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I like the price point on that for sure - but how would you compare it to what another user suggested: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Touch-Windows-Convertible-SP513-51-55ZR/dp/B01M18YU9I%3Fpsc%3D1%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAJQYFXGBZ6MDO67HQ%26tag%3Dshopineer-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB01M18YU9I

It seems like your suggestion has very similar specs with a lower price at the cost of an extra pound of weight

u/deadcentrebharatiya · 1 pointr/Dell

Oh gosh. That's really discouraging.

I was thinking between G3 and this Asus one.

2-in-1 much better specs than the HP you have, but no TB3

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YZMV4Q/ref=emc_b_5_t?th=1
This is recommended due to dual TB3 ports. No Dedicated GPU, but better specs all around and the same price as your HP and probably twice as powerful.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078T1715R/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B078T1715R&pd_rd_wg=gSsaZ&pd_rd_r=H48BTXRVAEN6MEEYFXW9&pd_rd_w=D8FIr
Specs still better than your HP and a nice looking machine, has dedicated graphics although not that powerful it is the newest low-power ultrabook GPU from nvidia and newest gen i7 processor
Not quite the specs I would be looking for and no TB3 which is always a buzzkill for me.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075N1YHVK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B075N1YHVK&pd_rd_wg=gSsaZ&pd_rd_r=H48BTXRVAEN6MEEYFXW9&pd_rd_w=D8FIr
If you wanna save some money, this is $750, elegant design and latest gen i5. You HP was like a 5th gen and this is an 8th. Otherwise some specs are better, some identical I think.

Zen Pro UX550VE Still my Top Choice but all these are good options considering your personal preference and needs.

advice: you’ll want at least 256gb for windows. trust me, 128gb for a 1440p isn’t worth it. unless you’re doing content creation or watching a shit ton of movies 24/7 on good internet, a 1080p display will treat you fine. with that in mind:

lenovo 730s:
while it doesn’t have a touchscreen, the quad core i7/16GB/512 on this machine will absolutely blow your theoretical machine out of the water in longevity and raw performance. there’s a much cheaper spec with i5/8/256 if you can’t cough up the extra $49. oh, and it only weighs 2.4 with a fingerprint sensor: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Notebook-i7-8565U-Processor-81JB0003US/dp/B07K8PY5H5/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=730s&qid=1567875384&s=gateway&sr=8-3

if you absolutely need a touchscreen but don’t need the bonus performance, check out the yoga (NOT THE 730s): https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Yoga-730-13-i5-8250u/dp/B07CKNCQYX

or if you want a bigger display and a bonus 4gb ram, check out this: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Touch-Screen-i5-8250U-Thunderbolt-Fingerprint/dp/B07CKVLP4V

all of them are available new on amazon, and include thunderbolt 3 so u can add an external graphics card or lightning fast storage down the road

Im not from the US so hope you won't blame me for my ignorance, but I'm willing to buy a lenovo 730 , but the prices at amazon are very confusing .

how come a 12 gig ram ddr4 and 8 gig ram ddr4 (same specs for the rest ) has a 50$ difference in favor for the 12 gigs, how can it be cheaper then the 8 gig???

secondly the 1 star reviews are very intimidating https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Touch-Screen-i5-8250U-Thunderbolt-Fingerprint/dp/B07CKVLP4V/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lenovo+yoga+730&qid=1573510690&sr=8-3 for example...

how can I be sure amazon is the best site to order this laptop from.

based on your past experience of ordering from amazon a laptop (not necessarily lenovo) would you recommend me? or should i order it from somewhere safer ?
