Can't tell if joking...

OP was mentioning that the other strings sounded dead and dull. This probably means they were at least 6 month old.

You have to be pretty tight on cash to not afford $6 worth of strings once or twice a year!

Edit: you all are spending too much on strings, in my opinion.

These? They probably would have worked pretty well in my dance/pop cover band where no one really cared about tone other than "that definitely sounds like a guitar, alright", and the extra bit of color would have been fun...but it seems the main complaint is that the coating wears through where you strum and at the fret contact points. Hmm.

Honestly it barely matters...

People have their brand loyalty, etc, but for a beginner, there is little difference. I'd go with light strings, because it's a bit easier on your fingers when starting out. Here are a few selections from three top brands.

Also, don't let restringing them be daunting. You tube has around a million tutorials for it, and it really isn't that hard.

You can download easy apps for free on your smartphone to use as a tuner, too.

Happy pickin

I saw the guitar you posted in your edit;

I recommend you spend a little more and get something a bit better than that guitar. The Yamaha FG700S Kit they have is a very good starter's guitar and in the long run I think would serve you better than the one you posted. If that one is a bit much for you, then you could get by with the Yamaha F355, which is a bit cheaper.

I have used D'addario, Ernie Balls, and Elixir. For price to performance I go with the Ernie Balls Earthwood Lights (mediums are probably fine too I just prefer lights), I used the D'addario when I first started playing and those always seemed very good but a tad bit expensive, same goes with the Elixirs I am using right now. The only reason I bought them is because Amazon was having a good sale and I got a pack of...8? I think... for about 6-8 dollars a pack which is far better than anywhere else I could have gone and gotten them from.

Prices

[Ernie Balls Medium Acoustic (6-pack) $19.89]

D'addario Medium Acoustic (10-pack) $43.99

Elixir Polyweb Acoustic Mediums (8-pack) $109.92

I do bulk prices because I usually buy these packs so I don't have to buy strings for awhile and you usually get better prices over buying single, especially with the D'addario and Ernie Balls. But these are just my suggestions feel free to just buy singles seeing as I know how hard it is to justify dropping over 100 dollars on strings even if you play very often.

They’re add-on so you need to get them with other stuff. FAIR WARNING: Depending on the size of your guitar, the G string will snap. When I order a pack, I order three packs just so I have extras. Wind the strings slowly, use pencil led in the head nut grooves, light stretching on the way up, etc.

I believe it was as the strings are tuned lower it would retain the tension? I believe these are it https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012I5BCRO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_D.VUxbY53235S

Oh.. Okay. Any advice on how often should I replace the strings? Mine were Fender Dura-Tone 880L (.012-.052 Gauge) and were over an year old..

Kinda similar. Recently I moved to a different state and had to leave my guitars over the winter. To get by I got the cheapest classical guitar I could find to practice with.

Sounds like shit and cuts up your finger when you play, but everybody who sees it thinks it is one of the most beautiful guitars ever.

What is the length from nut to bridge? I would have to assume you have a standard set of guitar strings on it. In order to tune it to ADGCEA with the proper tension, the nut to bridge distance would need to be around 19 inches to have the proper tension. If your scale is around 20 inches, you will need to use a lighter gauge set of strings. Requinto strings should work for a 20 to 21 inch scale.

Try this; tune every string one step lower so you're in D standard rather than E. Here's a video.

This should lower the tension, requiring less force to push down each string. Building up the hand strength required to hold a chord cleanly on an acoustic with (most likely) 12 or 13 gauge strings takes a long time. Even though you already have callouses, they will continue to get thicker and more resilient the more you play.

If tuning to D standard helps, then you'll know that you need lower string tension while you build up strength and muscle memory (trust me, it happens eventually!).

There are a few ways to accomplish this lower tension while still playing in E standard. the first is to tune to D and then put a capo on the second fret, which brings you back up to E. The second solution is much simpler; restring your guitar with a smaller string gauge like 11s.

It's also possible that the strings on your guitar are pretty old if you're still using the set it came with. New strings can make a big difference to playability. As a general rule, try to change them every few weeks or, if you're using coated strings like the ones I linked, every few months. Of course, some songs sound better with old strings so that's up to your discretion.

Thank you all so much, I ended up getting these, I really appreciate the help.

Hi! I recently bought and Ephiphone DR-100 and I broke a string. I'm not sure what type of strings go with that exact type of guitar? I always used Nylon on small acoustics and Dunlop Strings on electrics; but the strings on this guitar feel like they're similar to an electric's so I'm not sure. This is the guitar: http://images.epiphone.com.s3.amazonaws.com/Products/Acoustic/DR-100/Gallery/DR100_EB_Splash.jpg

And these are some of the options I was looking at: https://www.amazon.es/Ernie-Ball-Earthwood-Bronze-Acoustic/dp/B0002DV6TO?tag=guitarfcom07-21

I know it's a really dumb question but there are no music stores to where I live now so I really don't know where else to ask. thanks for the help!
