This is why I have dash cams in my cars.

If you don't want to spend a ton of money on good cams, get This one. It's cheap, but it records decent video and has a date/time stamp, and that's all you need to prove in court that someone cut you off/brake checked you to prove you aren't at fault.

Tip: Put in a 16GB or higher SD card and set it to 3min files. Works the best.

In this case the cop is right. Using a GoPro mount on your helmet is a violation of federal law:

CFR Sec. 571.218 says:

S5.5 Projections: "A helmet shall not have any rigid projections inside its shell. Rigid projections outside any helmet's shell shall be limited to those required for operation of essential accessories, and shall not protrude more than 0.20 inch (5 mm)."

It's not the fact that he was recording, but what he was recording with. By design a mount for a GoPro goes either on front or on top of the helmet and sticks out a couple inches. That violates the law.

Get you a side mounted camera to avoid this. I like the Polaroid XS100.

You don't have to buy an expensive camera for quality videos. Consider two of these + memory cards:

I paid ~$120 and now have cameras on the front and back. They work great.

26USD dash cam from newegg. I got one for this very reason (along with catching other happenings that would be internet worthy.) Invest in a better internet.

Edit: Reddit effect, sold out. Look here, its the same stuff. (I got mine from ebay, no problems.)
grandzooby found the same one on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/2-5-inch-Vehicle-Recorder-Dashboard-Camcorder/dp/B0053DDNW6

Plenty of options:

  • B1W ($47-55 USD) - Has wifi/cellphone app, Good video, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. - No GPS

Only surpasses A119 v2 in Extremely dark conditions, lesser video quality in all other conditions. Lacks Cloud feature. - Has GPS

  • A119 Pro ($90-124 USD) - Good video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. No wifi/cellphone app. - This isn't the best dash cam in the world, but it is one of the smaller ones. It was made for the drone world, and repurposed for the dash cam world. Lacks Cloud feature. - No GPS - Lacks G sensor (because it is part of the drone world)

    Budget Dual Cams:

  • Mini 0906 ($130 USD) - I would avoid this dash cam. ??? I have no idea GPS

    Last year's Flagship Dual Cams:

  • BlackVue DR650S 2CH ($298-370 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good/Fair video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. People complain about this dash cam's video quality. ---

Just to complicate things a bit more: BlackVue 1CH dash cams can not be upgraded to 2 CH. They will lack the rear camera port, as the 1CH dash cams are physically different than the 2CH versions.

Look around for the best price. - Standard copy pasta.

For $80 and change there's almost no reason to not have 2 cameras. Been using these for a few weeks, and the quality is pretty damn good (need to upload some video, but my commutes have been great lately).

u/wheelfoot · 28 pointsr/Gary_The_Cat

If you haven't already, get an accessory bundle like this one.

u/CoppingFreeFeels · 28 pointsr/BMW

UPDATE: (no video until I've worked this out)

GO BUY A DASH CAM. THIS IS THE ONE I HAVE AND ITS $21. Just needs an SD card. And an optional better mount. Mine is mounted behind my rearview mirror so you don't notice it and its hardwired in the same spot as my V1 so it automatically turns on with the car and starts recording.

UPDATE (cont.):

I seriously had to take a few hours to cool off and enjoy my vacation. Unfortunately I got back to the hotel after the managers had left.

Just spoke with the front desk manager who runs the show at night while the actual hotel managers are on during the day. He was super professional about it. Albeit, he's completely powerless in the situation but he took control, called everyone and setup a meeting for tomorrow morning.

Notes:

  • He was completely shocked by the video.
  • I had to tell the valet how to drive the SMG tranny is on tape.
  • When another gentlemen comes up to the car and asks if its his, he responds with a laugh and says "Nope, but its mine for now!"
  • He peels out of the hotel.
  • The car goes airborne twice. Once entering the garage. And again as he goes down a slope and launches off a ramp that meets a right turn entrance a parking level.
  • The wheels are burning at least 3-4 times.
  • The valet laughs at the end to cap it off.

    New things:

  • The valet turned out to be the supervisor.
  • The valet is outsourced by the hotel and carries its own insurance.
  • The other valets all knew about my car.
  • The ramp he flew off, leads to another garage that I was able to park in tonight with another valet. Meaning that, he intentionally launched it off there instead of slowing down.

    Possible Solutions Discussed:

  • Hotel
  • Valet
  • Food/Beverage
  • BMW Inspection
  • Repairs
  • Future Stays

The conversation went really well but again he's not the person in charge. Anyone capable of doing anything knows about it and will have a night to figure out how to appropriately respond.

Sorry guys, no video yet until I have an answer. Another update will come tomorrow morning.
u/Dr__One · 21 pointsr/gadgets

Knock off might not be the right word, more like competitors.

Depending on your needs, something like a $100 Xiaomi YI is probably all you need. Can be controlled via wifi, and can do 1080p at 60fps. This is way more camera than the average joe needs.

And $100 is a crap deal. You can get the YI for like $65 from Chinese sites.

Or if you want something that can do 4K, Xiaomi just came out with a $250 action cam that is very comparable to the GoPro Hero Black.

u/WinnieThePig · 20 pointsr/JusticePorn

Here you go. This is the one my buddy used. You can't read the license plate off of the video, but it works well for $20. It gets you the big picture. It sets thing up into like 3 minute segments and will over write the oldest one automatically.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053DDNW6/ref=shptrk_scth

u/Brettgraham4 · 20 pointsr/cycling

Definitely get a camera. If people give you shit after buzzing you, point to the camera and say, I've got your plate. Shuts them right up. A cheap sports cam with a bike mount costs about $50. About the same as a new helmet, and just as necessary if you're out on the road.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MXXP4EC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522185657&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=Waterproof+camera&dpPl=1&dpID=51p0MwtO-xL&ref=plSrch

A dash cam is nice in a car, but it's vital on a bike.

u/repoman · 19 pointsr/gadgets

Tested this camera today out on the snowmobile trails - worked great and doesn't make you look like Snoo (as does the GoPro).

P.S. Get a 32gb card though too - the 4gb it comes with is only good for about 45 minutes at 720p 60fps.

u/myname150 · 19 pointsr/houston

I have this camera, with this charger, this visor mount, this MicroSD Card, and an extra long mini USB cable I had laying around for my set up and it works great. It's extremely easy to set it all up yourself. I've had the camera for over a year now, and so far it has survived 1 Houston Summer. In total I've spent about a $100 on this whole set up, and i've already had a couple close calls.

Here are some video examples from my camera: 1, 2, and here is how it does during the night time.

Also, there is a suction mount available for that camera as well.

u/AlmostARockstar · 17 pointsr/videos

I got one a couple weeks ago after seeing so many crazy dash-cam videos and having a few close calls caused by other drivers. The one I got was probably the cheapest going because I didn't really know if I'd find it useful or not. I'm happy so far. The viewing angle is rather narrow but its compact enough, and the built in screen is kind of cool.

Amazon is your alternative. Check 'Other Sellers on Amazon'. A lot of item's will have different sellers that don't charge a sale tax.

Take for example this GoPro HERO5 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01M14ATO0/

http://i.imgur.com/lG0j6w6.png

The default one will be the first one, however, the second one has no sales tax. Those tax laws really only apply for items sold and shipped by Amazon. Items sold by other sellers and shipped through Amazon aren't necessarily affected. You'll receive the same protections as long as its a 'Prime' item. I live in the Bay Area where our sales tax is 10% so this helps a lot.

u/mirathi · 10 pointsr/HuntsvilleAlabama

I have several Mobius dash-cams. $79 Prime.

u/[deleted] · 9 pointsr/photography

I use the Black Rapids RS-7. It's a little expensive, but worth it to me. It looks like a regular strap upon casual inspection, so you won't stand out in a crowd.

It allows me to carry around and handle a big, heavy 5DII and the brick-like 24-70 f2.8L easily. The best advantage it has over a regular strap is that you can bring your camera to your eye quickly and move it back repeatedly without having to readjust anything.

u/ccb621 · 9 pointsr/photography

Black Rapid RS-7 for my heavier lenses (esp. 24-70 f/2.8L), otherwise the standard Canon 7D strap.

u/eggplantsforall · 8 pointsr/bikecommuting

You can't beat this one for the price: Lightdow LD4000 1080P -- $43

The video quality is fantastic, it comes with two batteries, and all sorts of mounting hardware. I have this for the back and a $200 Contour Roam 2 for the front, but honestly this has better quality footage.

u/cowpie184 · 8 pointsr/photography

this is the best gopro knockoff in my opinion

u/post_break · 7 pointsr/ft86

I avoid the blackvue now. Mine overheated in the summer. I know of two other owners who've had the same thing happen, twice. I'm in texas too, avoid that thing. Get something like the mobius. You can buy an ultracapacitor so it won't overheat in the summer. I just helped a friend install this in his focus ST and the quality rivals a GoPro. It's amazing. Oh and it's cheap as hell.

u/lessthanjake · 7 pointsr/TeenMFA

Should probably go in cop or not but I don't wanna wait.

Should I get an SJ4000? It's a GoPro knockoff that's supposedly really great quality for the price. I can get the camera, case, helmet mount, two extra rechargeable batteries, and a 32 gb memory card for ~$130.

I mainly want this for cycling, as I've heard so many horror stories of cyclists being hit or any sort of stuff and only winning cases because they had footage of the act. Plus, I lead a relatively active lifestyle between rock climbing, cycling, swimming, soccer, frisbee, etc. I plan to do even more of this at college, too, so I feel like this would just be nice to have.

But then again, I am about to go into college so I really need to save my money. Or should I buy it for myself as a graduation present. Idk. Fuck me someone help me please

Mobius dashcam if you want a descreet option

You don't need 4K, the Yi Action Cam would be sufficient (have both) and is currently just $50.

Riding with a camera does nothing to prevent and accident though. Before you spend money on a camera, make sure you've invested in some quality lights. You'd be surprised at the amount of road respect you can garner with a nice, bright, visible tail light.

Also consider riding with a mirror mounted on your helmet / glasses. Situational awareness can really give you better command of the road.

u/aekdbro · 6 pointsr/Austin

This is the dash cam that I use. Great footage for the price point.

u/PandaReich · 6 pointsr/Multicopter

Not a quad, but a flash sale for the Xiaomi Yi. Just picked it up for myself.

u/jgysland · 6 pointsr/washingtondc

I've got a Contour Roam as well, which I like as a helmet cam because I'm a terrible, vain creature and think conventional action cams stuck to the top of helmets look awfully silly.

If you're less vain -- or if you can find a Contour Roam at a reasonable price point, or you want better video quality more than you want to look cool -- I'd also recommend a Yi 4K (presently $170 on Amazon, but you'll probably want a ~$15 - $40 waterproof housing, and also some way to mount it). I've got one that I've mounted under my handlebars (in addition to wearing the Contour on my helmet) and I'm very impressed by it. It's got a removable battery, too, and you can get extra batteries real cheap.

One final option, if you're inclined to the action cam form factor but don't want to shell out $170 for a Yi 4k (or even more for a GoPro or what-have-you) is the recently-announced and very well-reviewed Yi Discovery, which as far as I can tell (though I don't own one, so no guarantees) is more-or-less the same thing as the Yi 4k, sans the mostly-useless image stabilization feature and with slightly slower frame rates (4k @ 20fps, 1080p60), but it's only $60, which is a steal. It uses the same batteries and other accessories as Yi 4k.

EDIT
Also: r/bikecammers is a good place to ask for advice on this stuff.

u/Unique_NY · 6 pointsr/canon

I dig my Black Rapid Curve (RS-7). At $60 that might not be the least expensive good option, but it's one that will last, is highly functional and is secure.

As you can see, it's a cross body type sling that screws securely into the tripod mount. The carabiner allows you to slide the camera up the strap to take a picture and then slide it back down to your hip all while the strap stays in place.

u/Trinket90 · 6 pointsr/funny
u/jumpiz · 6 pointsr/carcrash

>If you're going to crash, take the other guy with you.

Or get one of this.

For $20 at least you can show them you were avoiding someone. I know that due to the recording resolution is really hard to get a plate but at least you're not lying. With a 32GB memory($20) you have a 6 hours loop at max resolution (480p), and it records when you start your engine and stops when you turn off the engine, no weird installation required, just plug it in the cigarette lighter connector.

You can even set it to stay on for 30 min after you turn off the engine (internal battery) and record with a motion detector in case they bump your car while parked.

Works great for me. For $40 more, I was thinking to put one in the back now...

No, I am not Russian... :)

u/mapryan · 6 pointsr/bikecommuting

Get an SJ4000. That really is a cheap go-pro, but still gets half decent reviews.

u/mplsbikewrath · 6 pointsr/cycling

Here's what I wrote in another thread:

I ride with two Drift Stealth 2s and they're great - you can get them for about $85-100 apiece. They have 3-hour-ish battery life and on a 32 gig card can hold three days of my 20-mile-a-day commutes (they also have dashcam-like rollover so that you never have to worry about full memory, if you prefer that). They do 720p at 60fps or 1080p at 30fps, and while their picture isn't the equivalent of a GoPro, it's plenty good for legal purposes.

I highly recommend a helmet mount (vs. a bar mount) for your front-facing camera. You're much more likely to capture whatever shit's going on that way; a bar mount has a smoother picture but will miss anything happening to the side of your bicycle. One of the nice features of the Stealth 2 is that the camera lens rotates, so if you have to mount on your helmet at a funny angle you can turn the lens to compensate and still have a horizontal video.

For the rear mount, I used the sawed-off center beam of a seatpost-mounted back rack. There are cheaper seatpost-mounted back racks, but this particular model has a flat top, which makes it work well with the adhesive mount. I cut off everything but three-four inches from the beam, slapped the adhesive mount that comes with the Stealth 2 on there, and it's been going great even through weather for several months now.

If you have to choose between front and back for now, I'd definitely recommend investing in the front first.

Here's what they look like in daylight.

Here's what they look like during urban nighttime.

Here's what it looks like in rain.

Edit: It's notable that because the Stealth 2 uses a slide-in-slide-out mounting system, your mount-to-camera connection will loosen slightly over time from the friction of mounting and unmounting, which will cause vibration in the video after a while. I found that you can shim the inside of the mount with a strip of electrical tape, which tightens everything up nicely.

u/Zachy72 · 6 pointsr/TalesFromThePizzaGuy

I've had mine about 2 months and it's scary to seee how many of these close calls would have been considered my fault.

That's my little compilation. $100 is a small investment on your vehicle, it just seems alittle dumb to roll around without one

http://www.amazon.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-Sports/dp/B00DP1WYD2

I use the Mobius because it's discreet.

u/addy8 · 5 pointsr/MotoUK

Why does it need to be hidden? Some drivers behave better when they see a camera on your helmet. I guess also for it to be hidden it would need to be pretty small and so not great quality.

If you just want something that doesn't look like a big grey box on your helmet look at the Drift Stealth 2, it's small and light enough that you wont even notice it on your helmet.

u/graymulligan · 5 pointsr/motorcycles

Grab the Yi action cam - https://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Camera-US-White/dp/B016EIGEGU and the waterproof case, and you can use any of the gopro mounts. (or the cheap generic gopro mounts on amazon or ebay)

u/tehdrizzle · 5 pointsr/CyclistsWithCameras

Yi action camera - very good go pro style camera does 1080/60 and has phone app for config, downloading clips, etc. Can do 2k/30 but I think that’s just upscaled 1080 so I keep it on 1080/60.

sample footage I discovered after posting this that iMovie wasn’t exporting at 60fps so this clip is only 30fps but you get the idea.

Great cam, cheap batteries, inexpensive for sure. Granted it’s the only action camera I’ve used but I’ve got no complaints.

You can buy a GoPro HERO5 Black that comes with a crush resistance case now at: https://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHX-501-HERO5-Black/dp/B01M14ATO0

u/JeffyLikeFlaccid · 5 pointsr/videos

u/RickyBigRigs · 5 pointsr/Trucking

Fucking idiot pick-up driver, deserves to be shot. Still the truck driver could have stopped especially since this is an uphill. I know it would be extremely inconvenient.

Unfortunately the truck driver will get a preventable accident for this.

Oh also I do have a dashcam. $32 on amazon with memory card. It is not the best but it does the job. Audio recording is lacking but the video looks just like yours. I have seen these on sale at truck stops for $100.

u/Hobbsizzle · 5 pointsr/Dallas

Get something small and portable like this. I never leave mine in my car and sometimes don't realize I still have it in my pocket until hours later.

u/lispychicken · 4 pointsr/gadgets

Yes actually..and from Amazon.com :)

http://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Camera-Official-U-S/dp/B016EIGEGU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453927247&sr=8-2&keywords=xiaomi+action+camera

Xiaomi is good, lots of positive reviews and their gadgets are often regarded as being as good as any other gadget, but far cheaper.

Then, if you want to save $20.00 and get all the accessories:
http://www.amazon.com/Legazone-Shockproof-Carrying-Waterproof-Camcorder/dp/B013X1NSUG/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1453927432&sr=8-13&keywords=action+camera+wifi

Do yourself a favor and go to amazon, search "action camera" and then read the reviews.
The Xiaomi one is the best though, however, if you're not doing anything high end, like maybe dash cam, or for kids to use.. these alternatives are awesome. A lot of them are compatible with current GoPro accessories too (Xiaomi is not, however)

edit: and another action camera, well-rated:

Look into getting a Mobius Action camera. It's about half the weight of a GoPro session. 1080p video or stills. They also have a wide angle lens available too.

How about Polaroid Cube Act II up to 32 gb micro sd card.

I have a Mobius Action Camera and have recorded 3 hours of video (with extra battery) but use mostly on my RC planes.

not bifl but really nice and really small is the mobius action cam. Takes some effort to set it up great image.

Hey OP, invest in a dash cam. I use the Mobius Ation Cam. Mine is mounted inside the cabin in the middle of the car a foot or so behind my right ear. With this set up it not only shows the front of the vehicle, but it show's what I am doing inside the car. It is a much more realistic view of what I am seeing.

u/dionafranklin · 4 pointsr/airsoft

My setup

Head camera - UltraProX adventure cam 10.

Gun cam - Mobius action camera with zoom lens

Selfie Camera - contour roam 2

What i did for my second head camera is remove the ir lens to see full spectrum of the indoor arena. Video of the mod in use

u/Ttownzfinest · 4 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Not sure if you're going for style or functionality? I use the quick strap which is super functional and allows the camera to hang at your side instead of on your chest. It's a more frugal alternative to the Rapid Strap. It's one of the best investments I made for camera.

u/higher_moments · 4 pointsr/bikecommuting

Contour ROAM2. I'm pretty happy with it.

u/OssiansFolly · 4 pointsr/news

Huh...guess it is Polaroid. Goes to show how much I pay attention to the camera itself.

I had gotten it in a Flash Deal a couple years ago and bought the dash mount.

Why do my comments keep disappearing from this thread...

Has anyone tried this Polaroid camera? Trying to decide between that and the Roam.

edit: Oh, I have to replace the Amazon link with a different one and then edit it back in for the post to show up. Cool.

u/JohnnyZondo · 4 pointsr/VideoEditing

This plus this could give you a limited version of that.

Some assembly required.

with some extra work you might be able to fix an old junky tripod head to the lamp and use the tripod handle for some extra control, but I think the natural movement of your hand may feel more organic.

If the lamp springs are strong then even if you let go the camera should stay in relatively the same position.

Consider getting a dash cam or two as well and pointing them out of your car windows in the direction of potential keying or tire slashing view locations. Some of them are super tiny (one inch cube or even smaller if you are willing to pay more), inconspicuous, and can be attached via an internal magnet to inconspicuous locations inside of your car. You can put a piece of dark tape over the flashing LED that indicates it is on. It will just sit and record all the things going on around your car in whatever direction you point it and you can download the video later.

If you go this route, which if I were in your situation I would do myself, make sure you attach the cameras somewhere other than at work or your home. Perhaps you could use a trusted friend's garage or somewhere else where you are convinced the culprit wont notice you installing them (installation being as quick as sticking it to a piece of metal inside your car and pressing the button depending on the brand you get).

My partner has this one - a Polaroid Cube that is particularly tiny and inconspicuous but apparently it can only store about an hour or so worth of video. You might want to research other options if you wanted to go this route to be sure that it can record overnight or during whatever time frame the vandalism seems to be taking place.

Also, it goes without saying to keep ALL of the records you have currently of contact thus far. Document everything that happens including the day and time to the best of your ability. Keep even better documentation going forward so that if they are able to catch the person(s) doing this, there can be a whole slew of charges brought upon them for their numerous activities against you.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I wish I had better advice beyond what everyone has been offering thus far. Stay safe!

u/mc_nibbles · 3 pointsr/modeltrains

You simply need a flat car or something that you can tape a small camera to, and have a loco push it around the layout. Nothing special to it.

The Polaroid Cube is $99, or there is the Gopro Session for $199. If you are looking for something even cheaper, the SJ4000 action camera can be had for about $50 and is pretty good.

I personally have an SJ 4000, and I may try this with my N scale layout. If I do I'll post a sample video.

u/hardonchairs · 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

There's one in the newest line that's $120.

Edit:
http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHA-301-HERO/dp/B00NIYNUXO

Looks like its $130 actually.

Keep in mind that there are all different price points for the last two lines, so pretty much any amount you are willing to spend there's either a hero3 or hero4. Of course the features get better as you move up.

u/TheZincSaucier · 3 pointsr/gadgets

No, it only shuts off if it's not doing anything. It stays on for filming.
I don't really mind the 5 minute per file limit since most of my videos are short.

Have you seen this one? Only $130.
2 reasons I didn't go with that one are that I like the Cube's magnet mount, and the Cube is more pocket-friendly.

u/sternenhimmel · 3 pointsr/Multicopter

Just so you know, the new GoPro hero is only $129. It's essentially a lighter, WiFi-enabled version of their original GoPro. http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHA-301-HERO/dp/B00NIYNUXO/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1417198095&sr=1-1&keywords=gopro+hero

u/glidej · 3 pointsr/motorcycles

What about the basic GoPro Hero? Some limitations, but the price is right.

u/RubberReptile · 3 pointsr/ProductTesting

Hmmm... it would be nice to know how much $ you're spending on each cam.

TBH, all of them are pretty bad deals on AMZRT... usually you can get the same cam from a different seller for less. if you're gonna spend $80 just buy this cam: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CKTTNYM/ it's the least expensive with real stabilization and the stabilizer is AMAZING.

Cheapest cam on Amazon I can recommend this one has very good video but photos are only OK

To be honest, I would just spend the little extra on the SooCoo (first link) you'll have a much better cam experience than with any of the ones you linked.

If you want I can go take a test video with the soocoo and throw it up on Dropbox tonight, I just got the cam yesterday myself. :)

u/monsterbreath · 3 pointsr/videography

GoPro is still the best. But if you want pretty good and a lot cheaper, look at the Yi Action Camera

u/FOH-Banana · 3 pointsr/VIDEOENGINEERING

Plenty of options out there for me-too GoPro's, here's the $200 one that The Wirecutter recommends as a cheaper alternative, their vetting is usually pretty thorough.
(unclear if it has a video-out, or if you'd be stuck using just the wifi connectivity...could work well if you had a iPad or tablet to dedicate to viewing the action-cam...)

u/FlyingPhotog · 3 pointsr/photography

The RS-7 is what I use. I bought one (I think it was the RS-5, then) in around 2010. This year after all the wear I'd put on it, the hardware was starting to get a divot which caused a clicking noise whenever I walked around. Nope not at all, I actively encourage them. I was one of the people in the other thread that said a radar detector would make me more likely to write a ticket. The big difference is intent. u/Timid_Pimp · 3 pointsr/baltimore

Not much help since you've already been in an accident, but after getting in a couple of accidents (none my fault) in the baltimore area I invested in 2 of these. One to cover the front and one for the rear windshield.

u/mikarm · 3 pointsr/JusticePorn

Search for "HD Car DVR 2.5 TFT LCD 270° 6 IR LED" on ebay, you can grab one for $20. Mine shipped from hong kong. It is cheaply made and has some rattles sometimes, but that is only on the video itself. It works very well and takes some pretty clear video for the price. You can set it to record until out of space or set it to record in 5 or 10 minute intervals and it will delete old footage as it runs out of space. I put an 8gb sdcard in mine and it lasts a long time.

Here is how it looks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuvGjOMmxSo which imo is pretty damn good for $20.

Looks like the same one is posted below from Amazon as well by TwistedMexi. http://www.amazon.com/2-5-inch-Vehicle-Recorder-Dashboard-Camcorder/dp/B0053DDNW6/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1376583384&sr=1-1&keywords=dash+cam

I bought this one a while ago. It's not phenomenal quality, but it's good enough to distinctly make out the license plate of a car in front of you. It's great for the price and the charger it comes with has an insanely long cable. I snaked it around my car so it doesn't dangle randomly. I can post a video tomorrow if you want to see the quality.

u/gwannn · 3 pointsr/BikeCammers

I've been using the polaroid xs100 it's waterproof right out of the box and includes helmet and bar mounts. Better battery life rating than the cheaper model gopros. some gripes though: only 32gb limit on the SD card, no loop recording and no way to know how much battery is left. I just plug it into my PC every other day to charge and delete files.

Price is great, I've used them and the video is acceptable. Nobody will confuse your footage for a RED camera or anything but they work well in both low and direct light. Somebody does make a waterproof case for them of you're interested.

>Use it as a Driving Recorder; with the Magnet Mount and car adapter (Pro Package), the Mobius makes an effective dash cam. Camera can be configured that, as soon as the Mobius is plugged into the car power adapter it will start recording, no need to press record. With the Mobius’ video quality and wide angle view, you can read any license plate on the road with ease. u/dick_wool · 3 pointsr/newjersey

I'm looking at 2 budget dash cams: The mobius and the g1wh.

The Mobius fits neatly behind the rear-view mirror and seems like the most discreet option out there because of its small size. However it doesn't have an lcd screen if that's important to you.

I also like the G1WH because it's a bit cheaper but still has good reviews. It has a screen, however its not as discreet as the mobius and may not fit behind your rear-view mirror. But for 50+ bucks its a bargain.

Check out /r/dashcam or www.dashcamtalk.com for more dash cams. Theres many other options out there.

u/must_ache · 3 pointsr/CarAV

I wanted something like that as well, but it is super expensive to piece together a DVR and camera. I ended up going for a very small camera with no screen. Mobius Action Camera and 8" Lens extension cable might work for some installs.

I use one as a dash camera, works pretty good, uses USB for power, so wiring in a 12v to USB adapter is necessary. I'm going to grab the lens extension for a permanent install, lens on the mirror, body in my overhead console. For now its on a suction mount.

I have pins, key fobs, alarm clocks, clothes hooks, shades, and more.
In the end they all suck. In the end I use a Mobius. You will need a sd card but there are plenty of settings if you connect to a computer to help you setup. I belive even a motion capture. They are 1080p and are durable. When I am not needing it in the home I use it on another profile(you can have up to 3) as a dash cam(mount and plug needed) they are about the size of a deck of cards but I still feel can be hidden from site. Sorry it's family screwing you. If you come up with better be sure to post.

u/aeonaetos · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

I noticed that the mobius by black box is $85. I work at SpyTec, and we have it a little cheaper on Amazon for $77. Our Wide Angle on Amazon is $75.

Not trying to criticize sidebar choices in any way. Just mentioning that we generally have a lower price, in case anyone wants to go that router. Our price for the G1W-CB is a tad higher, Black Box seems to have us beat there.

Edit:

Also, some food for thought. I know the mini 0805 is popular, but I think, in terms of amazon ranking and popularity, the A118-C sells 10x more than the 0805, and we get fewer issues with them overall, too. This coming from a seller's perspective. Take it as you will.

u/Danappelxx · 2 pointsr/Multicopter

If you're going to build it, then you're gonna have to buy a separate camera. I'm sure you've heard of the GoPro, which a lot of people (including me) use. If you want a cheaper camera then a lot of people are having success with the Mobius Action Cam which is significantly cheaper (only ~$75).

Here's a comment I made to a similar post earlier:
>This frame is one of the cheapest options around. This frame is a little more expensive but you get better motors, esc's, flight controller, and a few other things that you will need (such as props). The previous frame is a clone of the Blackout Mini H which has top-of-the-line build quality, motors, and esc's, but is quite a bit more expensive. I have the blackout mini-h so obviously I'm a little biased, but it really is one of the best ones out there. There are other options such as the QAV250.

Between those price points, it's best to stick with the GoPros. You're beyond the price I would pay for any sort of knock off action camera, even if they're marketing slightly better features. The drawbacks of those just aren't worth it. If I were you, I would go with a GoPro Hero5 Black, that does up to 4K30 video, or a Hero6 Black if you can stretch the budget by another $25, giving you 4K60 or 1080p240.

The very inexpensive goPro - gives me around 4 hours or so battery - this one is running at 720p 60fps but can do 1080p@30fps, but I find a lot of screen tearing. Here is a link to the exact one: http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHA-301-HERO/dp/B00NIYNUXO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

And you can order pretty much any mount off Amazon as well depending on where you want to place it.

hard to beat this GP it records at 1080p, has decent battery life. Check out my videos I recorded this one in 720p and it still looks great, i have another one at Savage race at 1080p and it looks damn good.

dont be afraid to buy an older model, unless you think you need 4K or something, the older ones work great and for a fraction of the cost.

Duh, I didn't link what I was trying to here. Here

Sorry about that.

u/dinkvlogs · 2 pointsr/vlogging

I currently use my S6 for all the vlogs I record since that's the only really decent camera I have. It's funny you asked this question because I'm looking for another camera around this price point.

If you bump your budget up like $10 you could get into decent cameras to start off.

The GoPro hero retails at $129.99 on Amazon, but you could maybe find it cheaper used on eBay or something. It'll shoot 1080 at 30fps and 60fps at 720. Only thing is that it doesn't have a lcd screen so you won't be able to preview any footage. This was my first choice since I was looking for an action cam. The wifi one is like $199 and will allow you to preview footage on your phone, but for that price you could get something else like the GoPro session that shoots 4k and is smaller.

The Nikon CoolPix L340 is like $130-ish on Amazon (probably cheaper somewhere else) . It has a fixed lense and shoot only 720p video. I'm assuming probably just 30fps.

There are also some Samsung point and shoots around this price and lower, but the out of the box sound quality is probably terrible. I'd go with with either the GoPro or the CoolPix to start. You could also jump up into the $199 range which starts to offer very good quality. OR....you could also buy one of those handy cams too lol. I have one and it shoots decent video (1080/720 w/ 24-60 fps), but I feel stupid using it outside the house. Hope this helps a little bit! Good luck in your vlogging ☺.

What is a good budget waterproof camera for photography? Would I jut fare well with this? https://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHA-301-HERO/dp/B00NIYNUXO/

It doesn't have an LCD to view it...

u/ReyRey5280 · 2 pointsr/Denver

I use one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Lightdow-LD4000-Sports-Action-Camera/dp/B00X9Y2NFY/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1469032006&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=lightdaw

Including the sd card it was $54 and takes great video, best cycling investment I've ever made.

u/jnish · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

I highly recommend everyone have a camera on their bike, however short or innocuous their ride may seem. I consider my camera as my insurance policy... if something goes wrong I have this as proof. I won't ride without it.

No need to spend a lot on it either. In fact cheaper may be better so you can have both forward and rear facing cameras. You can get cheap knock-offs for less than $40. This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/Lightdow-LD4000-Sports-Action-Camera/dp/B00X9Y2NFY and it works great.

u/lost_pupper · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

This appears to be (almost) the exact same unit as the Lightdow LD4000:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X9Y2NFY/

I purchased this particular camera earlier this year for about $40 USD as a backup for my old GoPro Hero. It came with tons of accessories like a waterproof case (GoPro mount compatible), a bunch of knockoff GoPro mounts with 3M sticky tape... it even came with an extra battery.

But the quality just isn't as good as my GoPro Hero. The colors are more washed out, the resolution is 1080p on both but the Lightdow isn't as sharp, like it's a lower resolution that is being stretched to 1080p. I tried doing some color and sharpness adjustments in Final Cut to clean up the picture, but to no avail. The Lightdow has a screen on the back which is nice for some people, but I found that I never once used it other than changing settings.

For $40? This camera is awesome. Like I said it comes with a ton of mounts that are probably worth $15-20 alone (I use them with my GoPro now). But I've found that the quality is not quite as good as my GoPro. But if you don't already have a nice camera, the Eken/Lightdow/rebranded etc is probably awesome, and a steal for under fifty bucks.

If you don't care about removable battery or GoPro mounts, you might want to check out the Polaroid Cube.

u/hosemonkey · 2 pointsr/camping

I've got one of these little cameras. I call it my faux-pro. I've used it diving, in swift water, in a burn building (am a firefighter).

In outdoor light it takes awesome pictures. In indoor normal lighting or low light outdoors, it takes terrible pictures. Video quality is pretty good in low light, great in outdoor. Very sharp video. The case sucks, It was waterproof for a while, but then I had to upgrade for an extra 11 bucks (I think it was a case by geekpro and is light years better). Sound quality is non existent in the water proof case, but outside the case, sound quality is just as good as any cameras microphone I have seen.

All in all I am super happy with the purchase because I don't care if it gets broken or lost at 50$

u/Gaffers_Tape · 2 pointsr/VideoEditing

If you want to start really cheap and see what you grow into, we had this EXACT camera before upgrading to a gopro hero5 black:

https://www.amazon.com/Lightdow-LD6000-Sports-Action-Camera/dp/B00XC46RWG/

It has a decent sensor and does admirably well for video. Audio sucks but you'll be recording that separately. For $34 you really can't go wrong.

We still use this as a bump-cam/cutaway cam for multi-cam productions because it outputs clean video over HDMI. I used this exact camera in a few of the shots in this montage, mixed with shots from our $5,000+ Panasonic PX270 cameras. With a little color correction you really can't tell a difference:

https://wilmu.mediaspace.kaltura.com/media/1_hjufgv2n

In particular, I know I used it for the shot from inside the grain mill with the grain coming down on it, the pan of the keg room, and the tracking shot walking through the brewery. Probably the keg robot shot as well.

Cost Breakdown:

GoPro Black 7: $349

256 GB SD Card: $45

u/WeirdPneumaticCheese · 2 pointsr/ActionCam

I got a 50-in-1 accessory kit for like 40$ CAD on Amazon. I would go with that. High quality for the most part, comes in a great hard travel case that holds all the pieces. I'm really happy with it

Here is the kit (Amazon Canada)

u/OmniaMors · 2 pointsr/CompetitionShooting

Xiaomi Yi Action cam is way better than anything else I have seen for the cost. $70 gets you one hell of an action cam that I have used for USPSA and couldnt be happier with it. Personally I would get the 4k version but thats up to you.

u/klaqua · 2 pointsr/videography

I don't think it will matter much which you use. I go with the one in the hand that feels better to you. Magic Lantern is available and quite mature on both cams.

I use the Manfroto 560B-1 and are happy with the extra hight I can use.

Little side note. Consider to use a action cam like the xiaomi or a borrowed GoPro as a second angle B-Roll. Has saved me on occasion and is either cheap or free if you can borrow one.

Last but not least watch some of this guys videos. He has lots of good tips, but don't go to crazy. Your job is to have the moments as good as possible without being in the shoot or even be visible if at all possible!

Oh come on, you don't need a prop filter to record your video for self analysis, and the skeleton housing is like $8 on Amazon.

Now, I wouldn't say it's the best option to buy solely for cockpit recording, but if you're going to use it for something else then it's still a good buy. Otherwise, check out something like the yi clone.

I've got a gopro knockoff called a Yi Action Camera that works reasonably well. I've got it enclosed in a waterproof case and use a standard gopro mount to stick it to my helmet. It looks ridiculous, but it works, though at 1080p there's sometimes not quite enough resolution to make out license plates further away, so I'm contemplating moving to Yi's 4k model sometime in the near future.

If I were going for a sidemount camera, I'd probably recommend a Contour Roam. It's one of the cameras I was debating when I picked one up. I went with the Yi because it was cheaper and would let me see how useful it would be and how it would work mounted to my helmet.

u/day1patch · 2 pointsr/bicycling

The helmet mount is much better because you can film anything, not just directly in front of you. Also less vibration and easier to find a good mount, many bike mounts wiggle loose all the time.

What's your budget and where are you from? I personally use a Rollei 420 but that doesn't seem to be available on Amazon.com. The go pro sessions are very nice because they are light and slim and waterproof without a case so you don't loose sound which might be important at some point. If your budget is very low the go-pro knock offs aren't something to scoff at, they offer quite a bit of value for a much cheaper price.

u/EdwadThatone · 2 pointsr/cycling

If you can go ~$150 then I’d definitely recommend the GoPro Session. It’s simple to use, just push a button and it turns on and starts recording. Push it again and it stops recording and turns off. It’s compact, and won’t stick our like a sore thumb when on your head. It’s completely water proof without a housing. (Well, not water proof, but water resistant, but you can take it to the beach and it’ll be fine) You can get a new one on Amazon for $150 or if you shop around on eBay you can a used one for cheaper. Example. Once you buy that you’ll need an SD card, and a mount. Now, if you have a vented helmet and don’t mind some more added bulk, you could use this mount. It’s from GoPro, so it’ll be a bit more compared to off brand options but it will most likely last longer too. Or you could get the adhesive route and get something like this. Personally, I’d recommend the adhesive, but it’s really up to you. If you have any questions just ask. Good luck and be safe!

> be the best damn witness as possible

This is why I carry a small GoPro Hero in my pocket at all times. Makes a GREAT objective witness. Press the only button on it one time and she's instantly recording. You can turn off all the audible beeps and blinking red lights so it's nothing but a black box of legal defense weaponry.

Xiaomi Yi 4k You have to buy the waterproof case separately for another $30, but it's a great product. The camera, the waterproof case, and a kit of generic attachments/peripherals and you're set. All for around $300.

If you want something cheaper, the regular Xiaomi Yi is only $100 and still works great. I gave this to my 10-year old son last year for Christmas and it's held up great.

I'm also looking and researching good dash cams and here is what I have come up with so far:

Garmin Dashcam 55($200)

  • Video Quality
  • I've heard good and bad about this, apparently it's one of the best out there right now but it had overheating issues from the start. Looks like the latest firmware update for this has resolved the overheating issues (which was like 99% of peoples complaints about it)
  • Small and inconspicuous when mounted on windshield
  • High-quality 3.7 megapixel camera with 1440p video capture; works even in low-light conditions
  • Forward collision and lane departure warnings plus alerts for nearby red light cameras and speed cameras
*GPS-enabled with automatic incident detection (G-Sensor) saves video footage on impact to show when and where events happened
  • Voice control allows you to start/stop recording, take a still picture or start/stop the Travelapse photo capture feature

    THINKWARE X500D Dashcam($255)

  • Video Quality
  • If you want a good front + rear dashcam so you can catch things happening behind you too I hear this one is one of the best for the cost
  • A Full HD 1080p dash cam with Sony Exmor image sensor and a Full HD 1080p rear cam provide complete front and rear surveillance of your vehicle
  • High performance 32GB UHS-I microSD card with SPOR (Sudden Power Off Recovery) technology specifically tailored for Thinkware Dash Cams
  • Lane departure, front collision, red light and speed camera alerts help increase driver awareness.
  • Built-in GPS Tracker embeds crucial data such as time, speed, and location data
  • Optional accessory: Hardwiring cable to enable Parking Surveillance mode

    Mobious ActionCam($70)

  • Video Quality + Audio Quality test
  • So if your looking for the best deal I hear this one is it. Shoots 1080p, can be concealed in your mirror and apparently takes really good video and sound. But it doesn't have a screen which means downloading them to a pc.
u/kodack10 · 2 pointsr/radiocontrol

Yes, a Mobius cam. It's matchbook sized, 1080P and weighs a few grams. I use them on ultralight radio control helicopters that can't lift as much as a pigeon so it shouldn't be a problem. https://www.amazon.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-Sports/dp/B00DP1WYD2

This is a video I shot of my 130x helicopter crashing from a pretty good distance up. Good idea of the video quality. This heli is the size of a paper plate and weighs like 3 ounces.

u/Half_Cholo · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

Others have provided valuable recommendations, but here is one that I haven't seen mentioned.

Mobius Action Cam

Pros

  • Great price ($70)
  • 1080p @ 30fps
  • Super durable (I've dropped mine from height about a dozen times)
  • Above-average audio recording
  • Software available for pretty extensive customization
  • Mine has lasted for two years and plenty of 100+ degree days.
  • Battery easily swapped out for cheap and durable capacitor. (Highly recommended)
  • Not very noticeable from outside.

    Cons

  • No screen (although this reduces the size, so I guess it's a pro)
  • Looks a bit weird when mounted, like an upside down Wall-E lol.
  • No WiFi capability
  • Comes with battery that does not handle heat well, capacitor sold separately.
  • Pretty obvious to passengers.
  • You have to buy mount and usb cable separately. (would recommend 10-foot cable)

In general, I'd recommend steering clear of anything with a screen that is cheaper than $100. With the only exception being an A119/A119S if you can find it on sale. I rarely hear of a Mobius failing just from normal use, and when it does fail, its usually because of intense heat, or external force.

Regardless of what you choose, you shouldn't have to pay more than $150 for a dashcam that does what you described. Let me know if you have any other questions,

    Peace.
u/redtracer · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

Can't beat this for the price. Full HD and 30 FPS with as much storage as you can fit on a micro SD. I use them for my quadcopters and they work great. I've got one stuck on m helmet with some double sided tape. I'm not super confident with that so I might drill some kinda mount on there, but we'll see.

u/medievalcraft · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

I've looked into this because I'm not satisfied with the one I have. The Contour Roam 2 is fine, it does the job, but it has its flaws. It does not overwrite files when the card is full, so it is necessary to delete all files manually. Also, if you don't run Windows (or maybe Mac?) it's impossible to sync the time on it, so you can't ever know for sure when your videos were taken. Its image quality is decent but not superb.

The one I've had my eye one is the Drift Stealth 2. It's about the same price, has the same sorts of features, but importantly overwrites files.

The Contour Roams are very easy to use (simple slider switch), but it does get annoying having to delete files all the time. Having to plug the thing in to charge it and to deal with files means I'm messing with it like every two rides. I'd rather have something I can leave alone for the most part.

If you are fine with a boxier camera, the Xiaomi Yi is a great GoPro knockoff, very cheap (about $100 including a separate waterproof case), and great quality. Battery life isn't as good as the Contour, though. Also, the SJCam SJ4000 is often really cheap (like $40-60), but image quality is much lower.

u/Roomy · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I got one, and about a year later it went to shit. It was supposed to record till it's full, then start recording over the oldest stuff and just keep going, never stop recording. It turned on when the car turns on. Well a month or so ago it has a little message "SD Card Full" on it, so I try the settings, but when I try to delete anything on the card the Delete choice in the menu is greyed out. When I try Format in the menu, it's greyed out. As if the thing is programmed to do this after a certain amount of time.

So I went to reset the thing hoping that'll fix it. It reset... into Russian. I'm pretty sure it's a firmware planned obsolescence for some shitty Chinese built Russian electronics.

So basically, spring for a bit higher than 30 bucks when buying a Dashcam. And the best part is, for the year I had it, I never needed it. But as soon as I didn't have it recording anymore, I actually had an incident with two assholes in a Shelby Cobra try to run me off the road intentionally and try as hard as they could to get me to wreck. It wasn't a "they sped up a bit when I went to merge" thing, either. For two miles these guys are standing up in their convertible, pointing, laughing, throwing shit, swerving between all three lanes like maniacs, bumping into my car and nudging me, suddenly swerving to get me to swerve off the road, slowly pushing my car to the left to get me to run off the road, etc. Truly terrifying maniac type shit. And the fucking camera wasn't recording. I got none of it. So all I could do was call services and give them their licence plate... I'm so pissed I went for the cheap dashcam.

EDIT:
THIS is the piece of shit I went for, although when I got it, it was more expensive. Do NOT get this garbage. It will only fail you when you need it most.

It's the DVR-027, all over eBay. Be really careful and make sure to purchase from a highly rated seller - there are a lot of knockoffs. The real ones seem to be in the $60 range nowadays.

Do NOT buy the Amazon ones - they are $20 counterfeits with horrible video quality and you never know what you'll get. (I actually bought two of them a while back and received two different models in the same casing.)

I've actually got two real DVR-027s and two counterfeit ones - eventually I'll get around to putting up some example side by side videos to show the differences.

I understand. If you do go for a cheap camera this one is about the only option you have left.

It's mostly a lottery if you will get something "decent" that's somewhat reliable or something that where the video looks zoomed in and looks pretty bad. In terms of MicroSD, I found Transcend to be the cheapest sold by Amazon instead of being sold by another seller, which assures you it's not gonna be fake. Transcend is a great brand too.

I've had a camera in the car for a couple of years now and one for the helmet was pretty high up on the list after I started riding. I was holding out until I had a bit of spare cash but a white van cut a corner on my way home from work last week (if I'd been in the car it would have been a head-on collision) and I was still fuming when I got home so got straight on Amazon and ordered it. The van incident was the deciding factor because he could have put me down without touching me and driven off without a care and I'd have been massively out of pocket by not being able to prove it wasn't my fault.

I don't know if driving standards are getting worse, or if I notice it more since learning to ride, but during my brief journey to work I can pick out incident after incident across the whole spectrum from sheer inattentiveness to outright lunacy. Running lights, cutting corners, driving with no lights in shit visibility, zero lane discipline, on the phone, texting, I think I have at least one example of all of these (of them, not me) downloaded from the cameras.

I'm sure it's a case of 'when' not 'if' I will need to use video as evidence following an incident so I'd advise everyone to drive or ride with one.

Here's the camera I have in the car

And here is the one I use on the bike

I have a couple GoPros for shooting fun stuff but my every day commuter camera is the Contour. The form factor is a lot more helmet friendly, the giant on off switch lets you operate it with your gloves on, the rotating lens lets you level the shot easily, and the Contour Roam 2 is on sale for under $120 on Amazon right now. Actually I might buy a 2nd one since I have the original and mine isn't fully waterproof like the Roam 2.

Sure, HERE is an Amazon link for the one I own and can vouch for. I will say that there's this smug feeling once you have one that makes it worth the trouble. If your girlfriend/wife/etc doesn't like the look of it, then do something creative to attach to the rear-view mirror so that it's not so visible. Or get something like a Mobius ( https://www.amazon.com/Spy-Tec-mobius_regular_lens-Mobius-Action/dp/B00DP1WYD2 ) that is so small that no one can easily see it. You want to hardwire it, but if you don't want to deal with hardwiring it, take it to Car Toys on College and have them do it.

I'm fine with owning up to my mistakes but there are a lot of sleazy people who make stuff up to the police to avoid taking responsibility for their mistakes and my dashcam makes me feel like the next time some asshat does something idiotic and then blames it on me, I'll have proof.

Wimp! :)

Seriously though, consider buying a better strap. If you got a "really good deal" on it, why bother being paranoid? Best thing that I did (T2i owner here, but upgrading to a 5D MKIII later this year) was buy a better strap for the camera. Keeps my camera out of the way until I need it, and makes carrying it around a breeze, because it's not thumping on my chest or getting in the way of my arms/hands when I'm at a party/event.

  • Does she use Adobe Lightroom? If not, it's a must for any digital photographer. $149.

  • Black Rapid R-Strap or similar. $60.

  • Doe she travel? A GPS logger will let her geo-encode her photos.

EDIT: Lensbaby Muse is $150. It's kind of a gimmick lens. Some people love it, some people hate it.

$10 over but rock solid: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002WR7VSS/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1462568709&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=blackrapid+camera+strap&dpPl=1&dpID=31wO3UpdKZL&ref=plSrch

Also consider the Peak Design Capture Clip Pro. Then you can attach the camera to your backpack shoulder strap rather than faffing around with a strap.

u/jwriv4 · 1 pointr/photography

CAMERA STRAP: I'm looking for a "sling" type of strap to wear and have my camera hang at my waist. I'm looking at two different models that are the style I like.

Does anyone have feedback about either of these, or can you suggest a better one with the same style? I don't want to spend a fortune on the strap, but I could easily have $4500 hanging on this thing, so I don't want a piece of junk either.

While everyone suggests a 35 or 50mm f/1.8 lens, let me suggest a flash that isn't on top of your camera. I'd get at least the 430EX flash (http://amzn.com/B001CCAISE) so you can swivel and tilt the head of it. Pair that up with a good diffuser (http://amzn.com/B000CLNHXY) and you can take some great portraits. Flashes are great to have even in bright sunlight to soften shadows and add catch-lights to eyes, and are invaluable in other types of photography and situations.

Also, a RapidStrap is nice to have (http://amzn.com/B002WR7VSS), as it will get your camera off your neck and onto your shoulder. It's a hell of a lot more comfortable to carry it around during hikes like this.

Is the one I use. It's better than nothing I suppose. It does 720 and 1080 but damn is it pixely. I leave it on 640 for extra record time. The lens quality or whatever it's called is just bad. You could snag a license plate number if you were behind a car. You can make out city limit signs passing them at 60. The night time IR is really bad. Might as well leave that off. I didn't expect it would be good though. I've used it at the race track before and it's kinda fun to see all the cars as they pass me on the track (because 4runner). Also the sounds quality is bad. Leave that of too. The cord is really long and you can fit it with a huge micro sd. It has quite a few features if you can fumble through the poorly Englished manual. Overall for $16 though what do you expect. It does everything (not well) and hoping one day it will capture something cool or save my ass.

I had that one for a long time and it worked great. Just had to leave it plugged in the whole time. Get a big SD card. It would automatically rewrite the oldest video file when the SD card was full.

I know this wouldn't help in a parked car situation but I got a dash cam for $12 that works pretty well. I wish it was a wider angle lens because the view is pretty narrow but at least if someone rear ended me and sped away in front of me i'd be able to capture their plate. It starts filming when the car is turned on and stops about 10 seconds after the car is turned off and it's so cheap.

This is the cam, the reviews weren't great and I took a gamble but I am happy with it. Came with a mini usb cable, a car charger cable and the whole window mount. Totally worth the dough:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053DDNW6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is the card. I got a class 10 so the write speed would for sure be capable of the 1080p.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7ID99I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I tried to run the cam at 720 but it looked fuzzy so I bumped it up to 1080p. I have it set to do 5 minute segments the whole time and each file is usually right around 1GB each. When plugged into a cig lighter that only has power when the car is on the cam starts itself and starts recording when it gets power and goes until you shut it off/loses power. I just set it and forget style on my window and pull the card when I see something interesting along the drive to save. It just overwrites the oldest files if you don't do anything with them.

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Contour-ROAM2-Waterproof-Video-Camera/dp/B009CN8VRK

I find they have almost the same features and benefits of a GoPro, but without all the extra price because of the brand. It's stupid easy to mount and use, and the quality is fantastic. My only issue is that it doesn't over-write itself, but I suppose that's more of a custom usage problem on my part, most people wouldn't want that.

u/squarebore · 1 pointr/riddeit

I don't have a cam for my bike yet. I don't commute, but still run into lots of situations during recreational riding that I wouldn't mind having video of either just for fun, to show friends some of the beautiful trails we have, or in case I ever need it as evidence. I do have a dashcam in my car and like it. For the bike I'm leaning more towards something like the Contour Roam 2 or even the Mobius because the GoPro seems like it'd be big and clunky (and probably expensive) for mounting to my bike or helmet.

I ended up sending him these two recommendations:

>Option 1 - Racing Style

>Option 2 - Camera Platform

>Surprisingly, this one was harder to answer. Camera platforms or your DJI Phantom Style quads must have some more sophisticated components in order to maintain stability and make them easier to fly. Or they're just marked up because, hey, Go Pro owners don't know better and can afford it.

>Anyway, this is the best option I could find, though it is $50 over budget. You get everything you need to go fly except a Go Pro, and it has a nice gimbal for one of those when he gets one.

I've heard good things about the Mobius camera. Many FPV RC flyers use them, and they're durable.

http://www.amazon.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-Sports/dp/B00DP1WYD2

u/EatMoreCrisps · 1 pointr/bicycling

Yeah, it's not so terrible, I just think it's overly bulky, even if it looks svelt next to a GoPro.

If someone could make a Roam form factor with better imaging and dashcam-like abilities like recording in a perpetual loop and a button push to preserve a current segment I'd be pretty happy.

I'd still prefer it to be smaller and lower profile though. e.g. a waterproof, high quality Mobius.

Accelerometer control so it automatically starts and stops would be useful too. Not holding my breath for that.

u/HoberShort · 1 pointr/CompetitionShooting

I'd say neither.

  1. You should give your iPhone to someone else and get third person video of you. First person video shows you your targets, where third person video shows you what you were actually doing. Third person video is much more useful for improving.

  2. If you do want to compliment your third person video with a first person perspective (which I do, so no shame there), the Mobius Action Camera is probably the best value, dollar for dollar, out there. It's not fantastic audio quality or fantastic video either, but it's good. Example.
u/codmanhowie · 1 pointr/Multicopter

Good major components along with good suggestions below mine. Dont forget the little things. Zip ties, battery strap, 2mm bullet connectors for your power harness. Shrink wrap to cover your bullet connectors.

Also I'm not to sure how well that setup will carry a GoPro. That top plate is made for something like this...

http://www.amazon.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-Sports/dp/B00DP1WYD2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411065706&sr=8-1&keywords=Mobius.

u/Vewy_nice · 1 pointr/radiocontrol

This is a very good camera

I used to use one, until I 'sploded it in a seriously gnarly crash.

It's an older camera, and I'm sure there are more modern cams with similar performance for less, but it's what I've used for a long time.

u/TapoutAfflictionado · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Until I upgraded to a GoPro for other reasons, I used one of the Amazon knock offs like this with a chin strap mount like this since I didn't like the idea of leaving something permanent mounted on my helmet. If you don't care about that, then using something like the sticky mounts or Sugru on your helmet is probably more stable.

Other options you might want to consider are using a chest mount to make the image a lot more stable. You might also want to check out a backpack strap mount for convenience.

u/benmarvin · 1 pointr/IdiotsInCars

If you're not in a hurry, you can find dash cams on Wish for like 10-15 bucks shipped. https://www.wish.com/search/dash%20cam/product/5c66534e6730fb55ed55615f?&source=search or https://www.wish.com/search/dash%20cam/product/5c21a8a66173582d1f7ec06e?&source=search

I'm using a GoPro knockoff from Amazon that I think was like $30. This one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MXXP4EC/ $32 after coupon applied. The sticky pad for mounting sucked ass, so I got a 3M mounting strip that's been holding on for a year now.

Great sound for starting out! Keep it up and you'll gain a following in no time. I'd recommend a few things to really make your videos more professional. You may not be able to afford all these things right off the bat but save up and eventually invest. It will pay off.

  1. Lighting - Grab a couple of soft box lights and really light up your scene. They're very cheap now and days and allow a more expressive video to be captured and color corrected.

  2. If you're not already, use a DSLR camera to record yourself and each individual instrument. A high quality video can make a world of difference. I saved up and bought a Panasonic Lumix G7. It's perfect for entery level / mid-range YouTubers. Interchangeable lenses, 4k/23.9fps, and 1080p/60fps.

  3. Get an action cam. It doesn't have to be a GoPro but can be a cheap knockoff. As long as it can record in 1080p at 60fps you'll be good to go. I bought a knock off one for $50 a few years ago. With this camera, you can them clamp it to the neck of your guitar for a unique view you can cut back and forth to while playing.

I think if you tackle these steps first then you can go on to improving even more. As a content creator, you'll literally NEVER stop improving and that's perfectly fine.
u/LMGDiVa · 1 pointr/motorcycles

when you consider you can buy 4k cams on amazon with SONY sensor for 50 bucks or so, it's inexcusable. I GET IT that CANON wants people to spend MOAR MONEY for the high end video product and doesn't want to cannibalize sales but don't tell me that you can't design a BASIC level of functionality it into your product right now.

GoPro Hero 5 Session or GoPro Hero 5 Black?

Some factors to consider:

  • Complete amateur here when it comes to cameras.

  • Want to get one of these as a birthday present for a very close friend who is also my travelling & trekking buddy

  • We currently use my One Plus 3T phone for taking pics but I'd like to better quality selfies, pics and, perhaps, videos. Priority is on taking great pics. Videos are just a plus. This is all for personal use though mind you.

  • I have looked at other types of cameras like Mirrorless cameras and DSLRs but those seem either too expensive or impractical for lugging around when trekking. The weatherproofing on the GoPro is a definite plus as well.

  • I'm on a budget and the Hero 5 Black seems really expensive but I'm not averse to the idea of saving up more for it if it really makes a difference in photo quality over the Hero 5 Session.

  • Just throwing this out there: I’ll be ordering the GoPro via a friend who’s based in the UK and will be travelling back next month to my country (no GoPro store or official dealer where I live and the models available aren’t exactly reliable or cheap since they come with the extra premium price. Hence why I’m ordering it from abroad). Just to give you guys some context, the current price of the GoPro Hero 5 Black represents approximately 60% of my monthly paycheck.

I've gone through the Sidebars, FAQs & searched a bit around on this subreddit on this particular topic and unfortunately I'm still not sure what to go for. So any information on this will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know about bodycams per se. However, I do usually carry around a sport camera with me as part of my EDC. Of course there's my cellphone, but that could get rather cumbersome and distracting when trying to focus on your weapon.

Ridiculous? Not as much as you'd think.

Feasible? Absolutely.

With the low cost of sport cameras, it wouldn't take much of an investment to have one on you at all times. You can get relatively inexpensive cameras for $40 that work reliably and have options to continually record. Adding a clip for a pocket or belt wouldn't prove too difficult.

Even smartphones have apps that can be made to record with voice commands. Even better they can stream the video real-time to a remote location that backs up the video should anything happen to the phone.

What I am looking into is a mountable gun camera that either has an easily accessible button, or, perhaps even better, switches on whenever the gun is unholstered. Something like this would work with a rail system attachment.

I have the Mobius. It has a motion sensor feature but I don't use it because I haven't hard wired it yet, but if I did I probably would leave the setting on.

u/IceTeaUK · 1 pointr/airsoft

Footage wise and budget, I believe a Wide angled mobius camera would do well for being low profile and still work well link although I am not sure where any zoom lenses can be found.

u/ratmachinest · 1 pointr/gadgets

****Do any of this at your own risk or hire a professional to do it for you.***

Here are the parts I ordered to put mine together. I'm posting this bc of PMs.

Mobius or [Cheaper Mobius but longer wait from China] (http://www.banggood.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-HD-Mini-Sports-Camera-Wide-Angle-Edition-p-917817.html) I wanted the Wide Angle Lens for a better shot

Capacitor You don't want the battery sitting in the sun. A capacitor can handle it. So you replace the battery completely with this capacitor

Windshield Mount My mobius came with a mounting bracket that fits on this mount. The mount itself is very small, but the 3M sticker is very strong.

Hardwire Kit When hard wiring this in to the car via fuse box, this knocks the voltage down from 12v to 5v, which is what the camera needs. I used some wire strippers to expose about 5" of the red and black cables. Then stripped about an inch off each cable to expose the actual wire. The red wire goes in to the add-a-circuit mentioned below, then you crimp it closed with pliers (wasn't super easy, I must be weak). You partially unscrew a metal bolt that is attached to the metal car frame as a ground ( I used the one on top of my fuse box).

USB to Mini-USB This connects from the hardwire kit to the camera or 90 degree elbow mentioned next, for a better angle. If you are setting up the auto record when external power is on, which is what you want to do for a dash cam, you need to cut a piece of electrical tape width-wise and cover the two middle pins inside the USB cable. This is because the two middle pins (2 and 3) are data pins. Leaving those exposed makes the camera think its connected to a computer and will only do data transferring. By covering them, it only get power from pins 1 and 4 and doesn't think it's connected to a computer and will actually record.

Right Angle Mini-USB to Mini-USB Adapted This just helped keep the USB cable from sticking out too much (better angle)

Add-a-circuit This is the ATO (bigger fuse), but I ended up using the ATM (Mini) because my car has both and the fuse I wanted to use ended up being a Mini. It'd be best to look through your fuse diagram and find something non-vital (meaning don't tap in to a fuse that controls ABS or airbags, etc) and switchable (meaning it only comes on when the car turns on. You don't want the camera running 24/7), figure out what type of fuse it is, and buy that size. I ended up getting my new add-a-circuit (Littlefuse) from Oreilly auto parts for $6.99 and it came with 3, 4, 7.5, and 10A fuses. Also take note of the amperage (Never use a higher amp fuse than your add-a-circuit supports because the wire gauge may not support it and melt/burn. When adding the circuit, I removed the original fuse from the fuse box, a 10A fuse and put it the first slot(my add-a-circuit supports up to 10A) and for the 2nd slot, I used a 3A fuse because the camera and radar don't draw much. You don't want to use a higher amp fuse than necessary. Also, in my car 2011 JettaSportwagen, the add-a-circuit points down or it doesn't work. Make sure it's plugged in the correct direction or it won't do anything

32GB MicroSD Card Works fine, just make sure to format it through the camera.

Unofficial but awesome Mobius Configuration Tool Use the tooltips(hover over each option) to figure out what each things does. I set mine to autorecord when external power or the button are pushed.

You can find a lot of info here: dashcamtalk.com

To summarize the connections are:

Choose a fuse from your car's fuse diagram (non-essential and switchable), pull it, place it in the correct slot of the add-a-circuit (don't go to higher amps than is supported), plug in a fuse from the add-a-circuit kit in to the other slot to protect your camera (I used a 3A), strip the hardwire kit's cables mentioned above, put the red cable (+) from the hard wire kit in the the red end of the add-a-circuit and crimp it closed, attach the black cable (-) to a screw attached to the metal car frame, tape the two middle pins (2 and 3) in the USB cable with electrical tape, plug the USB in to the female USB on the hardwire kit, run the USB cable from the fuse box around the edges of your cars trim, up by the rearview mirror, attach the right-angle mini-usb adapter, choose where you want to mount the camera (make sure to check using the USB plugged in and camera mounted to the mount, in case it bumps the rearview mirror) (I held it on the windshield about where I thought I wanted it (to behind and to the right of the rearview mirror and took some test footage, watched it on a computer, decided it looked ok, pulled the sticker cover and attached it), clean your windshield with glass cleaner, attach the mount.

u/Stogie_561 · 1 pointr/ElectricScooters

I would look at it this way. Why not just get a good helmet and attach an action camera to it? If you don't want a typical GoPro like camera, there are things like the Mobius that have very good quality. There are going to be times when you don't necessarily need to film but still ride the scooter and need the helmet. Add the camera when you need it.

Looks excellent for the price, and does loop recording as far as I see.

Edit: the one you posted looks solid, do research thoroughly though :) no idea if it meets your needs.

u/eketros · 1 pointr/vancouver

I've had a dash cam in my car for almost 1.5 years, and just had the window smashed & dash cam taken. The dash cam was the only thing that was visible in the car – nothing else to steal. So I bought a much lower profile one, hoping that this one won't get noticed & stolen.

This is what I bought: https://www.amazon.ca/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-Sports/dp/B00GT2B4R6

It is a bit harder to set up, because it is not just meant to be a dash cam, and it doesn't have a screen. So you have to hook it up to a PC to set it up properly (so that it loops & auto turns on when the car turns on). You also have to buy a mount & cable to plug it into the car separately. But, it is really small, and possible to mount it inconspicuously.

u/xdownsetx · 1 pointr/motorcycles

https://www.amazon.com/Spy-Tec-Mobius-Action-Camera/dp/B00GT2B4R6/

These are great cameras to hard mount on a motorcycle for this purpose. They can be set to start recording when they receive 5v on the USB port and automatically turn off when they lose 5v on the USB port, they will also loop record so you never have to fiddle with the SD card until you need it.

u/tesla276 · 1 pointr/motorcycles

This is actually my first time using a mobius action camera. I got it because it's the smallest thing I could find that shot 1080p and I wanted to use it both on a drone and for my helmet (sweet aerial riding footage to come). This is shot at the lowest quality setting so I could fit 4hrs of riding onto a 32gig microSD card. At the highest quality (1080p, 60fps, widescreen) it looks crazy nice. I'll post something if anyone wants. The only drawback i see so far is that it looks like the battery lasts about 3hrs of constant filming. I don't know how this stacks up against others. It really is insanely capable for the price and the amazon reviews are raving. So far so good.

u/kyzen · 1 pointr/Multicopter

Not really doable at $300, but I can get you close.

Quadcopter

  • Cheerson CX-20/Quanum Nova - $255 - $300 (needs battery) - or ~$330 on ebay shipped from the US

  • Blade 350 QX3 RTF - $414 @ Horizon Hobby w/ coupon code XTRA10

  • Walkera QR X350 - $300

  • DIY - $70 Turnigy 9X + ~$150 F450 clone kit + ~$30 charger + ~$20 battery + $20 mount for camera (+$~75 APM if you want GPS) = ~$290-$365, plus any tools/assembly supplies you don't have on hand.

    Camera

  • SJ4000 - $65

  • Mobius - $80

  • GoPro Hero - $130

All prices are from a search I put near-zero effort into; you may be able to shave off a few bucks if you do some digging.

The Blade is the best of the 3 prebuilt quadcopters listed, the other 2 are a bit of a toss-up. DIY could net the highest quality, depends on your skills and how much effort you want to put in.

EDIT: Also worth noting that "good camera" and "FPV" sometimes don't mesh well. Stereotypically, FPVers fly fast and crash hard, while folks with "good cameras" on their quadcopters are flying slow, dangling the camera on a stabilized platform, taking pictures or video. You certainly can fly those camera rigs FPV, but it won't be the same sort of experience as FPV on a 250mm racer.

I hope you know that action cameras are not limited to GoPros...there's so many of them such as Sony action cams there is also the Xiaomi Yi which IMO is awesome for the price and rivals the Hero+. If you want to go cheaper you get in to the Mobius, Countour Ram 3, Any of the SJCAMS such as the SJ4000, Turnigy(notorious for a blue tinted videos tho), Polaroid XS100, 808 mini cam and the list goes on and on. I really like my Mobius Action cam (Wide angle). It's really easy once it is set up, and I would consider it to be a easy-meduim install for someone who is handy with car wiring. This is a post i made awhile ago on here with some info:

You can see day and night examples from mine at these links: Day / Night
also, here is a recent post on /r/JusticePorn where the road rager behind me crashes at the end: Link

I would consider adhesive mounts. Worst case, you can get residue off windows with some solvent. It's not easier, but it's not an issue if you want it up all the time.

PM me with any questions if you want.

I am talking about my rear setup, but its the same for the front:

Pictures of the install: Link (if you have RES and the last pic is rotated incorrectly, just click the picture)

It is a Mobius ActionCam: Link

To install, I powered it by tapping the radio fuse and running the positive wire back to the rear seat under the door sills. I connected it to this 12V DC to USB converter: Link

I found the correctly angled MiniUSB cable and ran it up to the window: Link

I got an adhesive mount because I didn't want it to ever fall off in the heat like some suction cups can. Also, the defroster lines on the window would prevent a suction. I got the "CH-358" from this page: Link

There are also 2 pictures of the front camera in that album. It was installed in roughly the same manner, but I used a different angled USB cable and a lower profile adhesive mount.

Drift Stealth 2 22 left at 69.99 USD... make that 21. Not too bad a price for a first camera.

u/byxen · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I use the Drift Stealth 2

At $75 it does 1080p @30fps,720p @60fps, and even has wifi. I like it because it's durable, cheap, and pretty damn reliable. It's also pretty small, and won't take up much space on your helmet.

u/justletyoursoulglooo · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

Is there a time limit to doing it? 7 years accident free and I got into 2 last year, neither of which were my fault, and as you say, I didn't ask so nobody volunteered that info. First accident was in Jan. 2015 and 2nd was in Sept. Both times my car was fixed by their company.

Also might as well add a LPT while I'm at it: If you don't have one, get a dashcam. Got one for Xmas 2014 and it was the sole reason I didn't have to hassle when I had my first accident. As soon as they saw the video they cut me a check. Here's my current one.

They're becoming less and less expensive. You can grab one of the drones for $350 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00AGOSQI8/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all (the ones from Amazon Warehouse Deals are just a bit banged up on the outside)) and the new GoPro Hero is $130 (http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHA-301-HERO/dp/B00NIYNUXO/). If you're looking to go more high end, look into FPV streaming, the DJI Phantom 2, the Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal and the GoPro Hero 4 Black. DJI even has a professional line that can carry DSLRs. It's definitely fun, but it's also really worrying, knowing that every time I launch I'm putting $1k+ in the air with huge potential for property damage. I've had some awkward conversations with neighbors. At the end of production for that video, I couldn't see the drone because it was so high up. We found it four days later about half a mile away. Right at the end was when the radio cut out. Try it out, but keep in mind that we live pretty close to some airports. The FAA says that all aircraft like this drone must be three miles away from any airports and must stay below 300 feet (one football field). I'd love to see what you get if you try it out. It'd also be a great father son activity as there's lots of maintenance, studying and practicing involved. Overall... GO FOR IT!

Okay, slightly loaded question.

  1. Don't worry about having nothing to film with it. You'll find things to film. I've filmed sports practices, spontaneous nights out, and even attached my GoPro to my DSLRs horseshoe to get a nice random POV while photographing. If you're creative and feel like you WANT to FIND things to film with it then get it. World's most versatile camera by far.

  2. In response to your "is it worth buying" outright question, the way I look at it is that the Hero 4 is a (semi) pro-level camera. If you're Joe Bloggs who wants a camera to capture their holiday, or get some sweet selfies for Facebook - don't bother with the 4. A second hand 3 or even better the new plain [Hero] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NIYNUXO/ref=s9_al_bw_g421_i4) will suit you A LOT better. If you want more production values, sweet slow-motion, better looking night shots get the 4.

I've never seen a cell phone mounted to a helmet for the purposes of recording video, that's a big phone, wouldn't it add too much weight? Are you not concerned about putting an $800 device in harm's way?

I know you said that you don't want a GoPro (or other 'action' camera), but they really are purpose built for exactly this type of task, and I think the perspective would be better due to the wide angle 'sport' lens.

I bought a cheap GoPro knock off for a recent snorkeling trip, and we were impressed. The video quality is very good. An added bonus.. if the cam get's smashed, you're out $43, not $800, and it came with a ton of mounting hardware and two batteries.

Mid: Dazzne P2+ - $50 Amazon Link - Basic electronic stabilization, a good balance between lower light performance & resolution, probably the one I'd recommend in this case. Based on OV4689 sensor, and NT96660 processor. Downside is not great audio with the waterproof case.

High: SooCoo C30 - $65 Amazon Link - Better gyro stabilization, higher resolution 12MP Sony sensor. I'd buy this cam if you want to use it as a proper action cam too and not just to document your journey. The downside is battery life.

Make sure you invest in extra batteries too for any of the cams.

Do NOT: buy any cam where they do not list the sensor and processor. 9 times out of 10 you'll get a garbage generic camera based on the lowest end hardware

I bought this package earlier this year. It's affordable, and has most accessories you could ever need (and didn't cost much).

Good luck!

I got a knock off gopro for free. Not exactly this one but they're basically identical. It's great. Most gopro accessories work with it and it does a lot for the price. Far better than I would ever expect.

Hi there, I'm the owner of a H7B since a few months now. I'm about to use it a lot in the next few months as I'll be traveling.

Atm I'm only using it without any accessories, I'm thinking of buying some. The official ones are way too expensive for my wallet, is there any kit selling on Amazon that you guys recommend ?

I think for many action cameras the equipment is somewhat interchangeable.
Since you seem to own other cameras with mounts, maybe just try out if the Yi cam fits any of those mounts and get one of those.
There are cheap bundles of various attachment stuff on amazon if you search for "action cam" or for a company name. (gopro, rollei, Yi,..)

The total of items for the price seems too good to be true. Currently I can't find my wrist strap and dive housing. I never really use the dive housing anyway. The standard one is more than enough for me. Anyway I need the wrist strap and antifog inserts for my upcoming cruise. Is this bundle worth it?

u/SileAnimus · 1 pointr/scooters

Basically any gopro will work if you get an attachment set. I got one of these and paired it up with a GoPro Session for my own helmet (which is also a modular!). Here's how it looks like. Very visible for anyone behind me, especially with the blinking red recording light. And don't forget to get a good microSD card to go along with the cameras- you need one that is made specifically for recording video (GoPro has a good list of those here).

And yeah, steering is the most important thing to learn. Super dangerous if done incorrectly.

u/try_angle · 1 pointr/bodyboarding

That's what I was looking at, but was expecting the lower price I saw last year. Apparently Xiaomi has a branch called YiTechnology that has the camera without the Xiaomi name for $60, so I didn't find it originally searching Amazon. Guess I know what I'm getting.

u/wolfcry0 · 1 pointr/Cameras

Can you bump up a little in price? The Xiaomi Yi is $70 and is the cheapest one I'd really recommend.

u/djrbx · 1 pointr/gopro

Does it have to be a GoPro? If you're limited in budget, the YI Action Camera is a great alternative. I have the GoPro Hero 4 Silver and my roommate has the Yi, you can barely notice the difference between each camera. The GoPro does offer better features but overall, the Yi comes close. You can also use the Yi footage in GoPro Studio if you need it.

You would have to buy a waterproof case for the Yi since it doesn't come with one out of the box but those can be bought for about $15 on amazon. I would also recommend getting spare batteries as well. You can get a whole Yi setup for about $140 or less compared to a GoPro Hero 4 Silver costing at around $340 right now on amazon.

Here's a good review on the Yi

u/willgrahamcrackr · 1 pointr/Multicopter

Super cheap action cams are almost never the resolution they claim to be. The usually are 720p or worse and then upconverted to appear to be 1080p. If you want a cheap action cam that will actually give you quality at a cheap price look for the xiaomi yi

https://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Camera-US-White/dp/B016EIGEGU/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1479387423&sr=1-3&keywords=xiaomi+yi

u/cliffmoon · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

In the front I run a Yi Action (https://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Camera-US-White/dp/B016EIGEGU), mounted to the underside of my yahoo elemnt mount (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019L1OJW8/). You need to get the clear case for it but it'll mount up just fine. The cam is configurable via smartphone so you can setup auto-flipping for the video and looped recording. Video is pretty good quality, although the battery will only last about an hour or so. If you wanna drop more dough the Yi Action 4k supposedly has better battery life in addition to better resolution.

I also run a Cycliq fly6 on the back. Between the two cameras I can almost always get plates on any misbehaving drivers, although I haven't been in an accident yet. The only downside is if you park somewhere unsecured you should definitely pull all the gadgets off your bike otherwise they're getting stolen

u/watergator · 1 pointr/kayakfishing

I use the Xiaomi Yi that was about $100 with a waterproof case. It's worked well over the last year. The only problem with it was that it didn't come with English instructions, but it's really simple and I was able to figure it out on forums and YouTube. Heres a spearfishing video I made with it that shows the quality

Hero Session (al diavolo i soldi, una volta che viaggio voglio un ricordo decente)

Xiaomi YI (in medio stat virtus)

Consigli? Opinioni? Perplessità?

u/I_am_Nic · 1 pointr/sonyactioncam

If you are on a tight budget getting a Yi or Yi 4k is not a bad decision at all.

Most people simply replace/overlay the original audio with music later.

If you though want to do a Vlog-style travel video a X3000 will not only give you better audio but also a high quality and stabilized video.

One advantage, which bith the Yi-cameras don't have is, that the Sony is splashproof and dustproof, which means you can use it without the case during rain/ at the beach without the risk of damaging your camera and still get good audio. With the Yi you nearly always have to use the case when you are outdoor, so it would render the already bad audio useless anyways.

It is your money, your choice. I hope I could help you with the decision with this reply.

If you have further questions, just reply to this comment.

  • Nic

P.S.: Don't forget, that you have to get a SD card (I recommend this for the X3000) for either camera.

Also you might want to get additional batteries or a powerbank to exchange an empty one and charge on the go.

If you're open to something other than a GoPro check out this guy on Amazon. Sony sensor, video quality is great, and there's just as many accessories. I've been using mine for a while and absolutely love it. Best part is the price, $80!

u/Kawaicoder · 1 pointr/motorcycles

GoPro Session. Definitely worth, they have more firmware updates than the Contour and also quality. http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHS-102-HERO-Session/dp/B01C80O0ZU/

Mic starts losing after 40mph and it has no external mic slots or options. So if you talk in your videos it won't be picked up unless you're stopped or slow.

Just make sure you get a compatible SD card from GoPro's chart or you'll run into problems like I did. Once I got a new card it's been working perfect.

u/GeorgeMeowington · 1 pointr/timelapse

I don't really know anything about cameras. We decided that we are going to use a 60 second interval time for the time lapse. Let me get you up to speed with where I am at. We have completely thrown out the idea of using anything made by Brinno. We like the Hero5 sessions made by GoPro for it's built in time lapse functionality and simplicity. We figure if we get a large enough storage card we can set it to record at the beginning of the week then stop it at the end. We would have to edit out the time we are not working, but considering the camera is going to be outside in the winter the durability of this camera also makes it attractive. What do you think?

u/Heptite · 1 pointr/cats

There's this, but the battery life is only about 2 hours: https://smile.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDHS-102-HERO-Session/dp/B01C80O0ZU

And it's probably not small enough.

u/Paulwhite20 · 1 pointr/AskPhotography

The Firefly 8SE is close to $300 on Amazon, looking for something a little bit cheaper if possible. $100-$200 ideally. If this sounds wrong then can you supply the link to the camera on Amazon or another sellers site?

I found this on Amazon for the Xiaomi Yi - https://www.amazon.ca/YI-Action-Sports-Camera-Control/dp/B01FU9ZIMU/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=Xiaomi+Yi&qid=1564248482&s=electronics&sr=1-8

It looks like a good camera for it’s price, it just doesn’t seem to come with an underwater housing. I’m sure you can buy it separate as well. Is this the camera you were talking about?

u/yuhaoyang · 1 pointr/MTB

There's that yi 4k camera, which if I had to buy again I would go for...
https://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Camera-Night-Black/dp/B01FU9ZIMU/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1495209104&sr=1-3&keywords=yi+4k
It's 200 bucks USD. I currently use a hero 5

u/landoindisguise · 1 pointr/climbing

Yeah, if you're just getting into it, I'd say the GoPro is a good choice. Nice and light, can capture the scenery in beautiful spots thanks to the super wide angle, plus they can do timelapses (I think, never actually tried that feature), cool POV stuff, etc.

Plus if in the future you decide you want to upgrade to a DSLR, the GoPro will still be useful. I have this thing (GoPro knockoff, but it's actually quite good IMO) and I use it for POV action stuff, and also as a "B-camera" for some shoots so that I can get two angles of the same thing.

u/SpyCake1 · 1 pointr/Cruise

Definitely way more competition now. Check out the Xiaomi Yi Camera with a waterproof case. It's basically a straight up Chinese version at a generous discount.

I personally have the HTC Re which isn't so much waterproof, but can be submerged for brief periods, but that's probably not what you had in mind.

For more traditional cameras, Sony makes a line of waterproof cameras. A friend of mine has an older one of those that we took rafting in Colorado with and it performed very well.

u/dougmc · 1 pointr/BikeCammers

If you're not looking to save footage but instead just want a record of what happened in case there's an incident, you don't really need stabilization, and in fact you might want to turn that off if the camera does have it in that case for a wider field of view.

As for what to buy on a budget, I was really impressed with the quality of this and the price was only about $100 USD. That said, it shares the GoPro's short battery life, so ... add an external battery.

u/rivingtonthe3rd · 1 pointr/boostedboards

Yi 4k! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FU9ZIMU Cheaper than when I bought it right now too!

edit: at the bottom of the page it shows "Frequently purchased together" extra batteries and accessory kit. I actually picked that up and am super happy with everything.

u/jello3d · 1 pointr/videography

If by "shop" you mean like a woodworking shop. Assuming you want 4k... I would suggest something like a panasonic G7 plus an external recorder like a videoassist or Atomos. Or if you have a spare computer, you can get a blackmagic mini recorder 4k and capture as much as you like. If you want something more like a GoPro, you probably can't get 8 hours, but you can go for 4 or 5 hours at a crack with the Yi 4k action cam and a 128GB sd card (just as good as a gopro).

u/cocaine_enema · 1 pointr/skiing

What do you mean by curved mount for the hero?

If I were to get this

what mount should I get?

u/lord_william_j · 1 pointr/letsplay

If you check out my channels latest video I use the C920 and to me looks nice and crisp. I use my own lighting which helps an f ton for the c920 (2 desk lamps with L.E.D bulbs). Here's my settings for my C920 if you're interested.

For filming other things and what not, it's gonna be pretty expensive if you want quality recordings, just having a gander on something I'd use, might cost upwards of $600 AUD. But most cameras can easily work with OBS, either via a capture card or it's in built functionality.

Edit: If I was gonna buy a camera for on the go stuff I'd go for this and probably this for mic and I'd probably count that as mid tier equipment at most.

u/Naaackers · 1 pointr/Twitch

The c922 is shit, don't get it. It was a strategic marketing ploy to sell more of the same camera for twice the price. The c920 is the best USB cam out there for the price. The Brio is even worse, don't bother IMO.

Secondly, a camera is only as good as your lighting. You need to be very well lit in order for the camera to do it's job. USB cameras don't do well in low light.

I would say the best option that doesn't involve dropping big bucks on a camcorder or a DSLR is a GoProHero + Cam Link. The only extra thing you need is a $20 boom arm and a $20 power supply for the gopro so you don't run on batteries. You can set gopro's to have a narrow FOV if the fish eye look isn't your thing. GoPro Hero 5 Black is $200 on amazon. With the other accessories that puts you at around $400 for the whole thing. Not bad. A nice 1080p60fps camera that is decently downscaled to 720p and looks decent on stream. But again, lighting is key.

u/bellboy2088 · 1 pointr/gopro

u/kabbage123 · 0 pointsr/videography

Honestly, if you aren't willing to buy used, then there aren't many options in your budget. The FZ1000 is not a good camera for capturing theater due to a 30 minute recording limit. Almost every DSLR/DSLM in this price-range has the same limitation due to a tax classification issue of being a 'camcorder' vs. a still camera.

You probably are better off with a GoPro Hero 5 unless you don't mind starting the camera up again after 30 minutes every time. Or an old cell phone even.
