Paul Theroux actually was in the field. I will venture to say that he has a hell of a lot more clue about Africa "on the ground" than Bono (or most aid agencies, for that matter) ever will. The man taught in Malawi, Zambia and Uganda (not 100% sure about the latter two), and later on, walked and hitchhiked from Cairo to Cape Town.
Well worth a read, but be prepared for some bitterness.
