You can get a simple Air Mattress Pump for much cheaper and it works great. Even has attachments. It's what I use.
I have moved countries 4 times now. What I usually do is sell off as much as I can to have money to buy the basics in a new country/state.
Like that I save on cost of transporting furniture and so on and instead invest that into things like a sofa bed and table, kitchen stuff.
It’s not easy but it avoids unnecessary costs.
Basics I try to buy fast are:
Sofa bed or a good air mattress (Amazon has pretty good ones for under $100, I have this one air mattress ) - if you can buy a sofa bed as it doubles way better as sofa to sit on during the day sofa ikea has good options sofa bed
Foldable table (again amazon, they are height adjustable and I can use them as table to prep food, dinner table and couch table , I usually buy 2) table
Most apartments in the US come with walk-in closets so that’s a great plus if not you can get pretty cheap roller wardrobes. A friend of mine has this wardrobe
It’s not much but it helps for the first few months and then over time when you have more money you start buying things like a proper bed, desk and so on.
I always prioritize kitchen appliances as I love cooking and will move the better ones I have but then buy cheap plates and so on.

My wife and I use a double high queen air mattress, and the kids sleep on the unfolded sofa. During the day, we fold the sofa up, drape a shemagh over a bin to create a coffee table, and create a living room area.

Here's an intex one for $38. However! If your friendly neighborhood Kmart or Sears is closing, it's worth a look there. My hometown Kmart is, and I snagged a REALLY nice Coleman cooler for pretty cheap.
Air mattresses are cold (metal truck bed) compared to foam pads, but backpacking-style foam pads are probably too thin to be comfortable in your truck bed. You might look at an extra thick Thermarest made for car camping. Or for a cheap solution, put a couple of blue moving pads under a cheap air mattress. Can also be used on top as quilts if you find out in the middle of the night your sleeping bags aren't warm enough.
Weather? I don't know. If you try roping a tarp over the bed, if you get any rain at all you will have a waterbed pushing down on top of you after a while. Maybe something like a few feet of 1" dowel rod screwed to a plywood base between your two sleeping bags, to give you a peak to divert the rain off.
So I know how you feel, im 6'3" 375 and i hate sleeping on the ground all together.
With that said, I hope price isnt too much of an issue.
I started with a double tall air matress from some generic company. Its just to offer the buffer between me and the floor.

Even firm support. Doesn't deflate overnight. Durable so far. Rolls up tight for packing. Easy to inflate/deflate. 10/10 would recommend.
Not to knock the OPs post because cheap mattress is a cheap mattress. But there's a reason this mattress is so cheap. Top review shows picture of baffles breaking after only a few uses. Plus I've found that the double stacked mattresses like that deflate faster and take up way too much tent space.
I recommend this mattress. Yes, it's twice the price but it will last you many Roo's and is crazy comfortable and you'll only have to pump it once. The pump they give you is kinda weak though. FYI. Mattress is stellar.

I retire it every 3 years as a precaution and have never had a single issue. and bring shoe goo to burning man always. you could fix an air mattress that was in a knife fight with shoe goo. Never had a problem with that TPU lightstream.

Hmm, I'd almost suggest getting a hammock. it'll be much better on your back if you're planning on using it for a few months. There's some pretty damn comfy ones you can get, easy as shit to hang, or you can find a cheap used hammock stand on craigslist if you dont want to put holes in your wall. If you are still set on the mattress, get this. Holds air like a champ, and is super light weight in case you do decide to use it for camping :)
If you're not going to be comfortable (psychologically OR physically), then put your foot down. You can tell your husband that you just won't be able to get any sleep that way, and either you can make different sleeping arrangements or get a hotel room.

For car camping, we use a standard home queen sized air mattress. We use one of these to air it up. Depending on the weather, you can get by with using your own bedding and pillows. Big savings there. And bonus - you now have an air mattress for the unexpected guest.
A good Coleman two burner camp stove is a great investment. As is, as someone else mentioned, a separate set of camping cookware.

I'd recommend a firm air mattress that can be easily transportable plus save money on furniture by picking up cheap/free stuff from craigslist, even the ones already assembled from Ikea.

Every other weekend doesn't sound TOO bad, although I still think it's sucky to put three kids on one sofa-bed (they're always so crappy!).
I understand that you want the kids to be comfy and happy, but unless there's some kind of escalatory incident (kids refusing to go over there or calling you to be picked up, for example) it will probably be lower-conflict if you let the sleeping arrangements remain BM's problem for the time being.
If your stepdaughter complains, maybe you could offer to purchase a good-quality air mattress (we have one like this for when we have overflow guests) for her, so she can at least have her own bed.

I have yet to take this to the burn, but have used it several times and it's held up great. One usage was a 4 day festival. Seems pretty well made. It's about $25 more than when I bought it, though.

I'll expand on that. I bought a cheap mattress inflator from a Goodwill for $1. It's super effective at blowing dust out if little cracks. I walk around the shop with a brush in one hand, and the blower in the other hand. I don't know what kinds of activities you do but I make jewelry, sew, and do old school photography methods that require a decent amount of equipment and I brought everything but my sewing machine (which I only left with my mom because I didn't think I'd be near an electrical outlet enough to justify bringing it lol), and gog has a suitcase of books we affectionately called the "library". So all of our hobbies, plus our clothes, cooking equiptment, food (perishable in a cooler and nonperishable in a sturdy canvas bag), 8 gallons of water, our bed, and other random stuff I'm neglecting to think of fit pretty comfortably in the caravan. I'd be happy to send you photos of our setup to give you a better sense of it if you want.

The compressor will make inflation fast and easy. Also good to keep one in your car for flats.
This air mattress is $120 and is excellent. It has a built in pump so you can just turn the knob to add more air when needed. It's also pretty much the height of a regular bed so it doesn't feel like your sleeping on the floor. I highly recommend getting a mattress pad like this one and it will really make it feel like a real bed.... we have this set up (along with some IKEA sheets and comforter) and guests who use it always rave that they can barely tell it's not a normal bed. By the time you add it all up (mattress $119, pad $20, sheets, pillows, comforter) you'll be under your $250 but probably close unless you can just use stuff you already have!
If you absolutely have to go the futon route, check Craigslist and IKEA, but to be honest they're pretty pricey for the decent ones and the cheap ones aren't very comfortable.
If you're looking to use this in a house or apartment, why not go with an inflatable mattress? I purchased this inflatable mattress for $100 through Amazon and have had it for several years and have never had an issue. I even slept on it for a month without any issues (minus an air top up ever few days).
Although I still have some insomnia it's not as bad as it was as I have a better handle of the PTSD and have had a quite a bit of counselling. One of the things I found really helpful is getting a pillow with a small speaker inside and listening to podcasts, like the Sleep With Me ones or some children's books on Librivox.
It gave me something to focus on so I wasn't filled with anxiety about having nightmares or flashbacks. I didn't always sleep but just the act of resting was helpful. I also used to use audiobooks in the bath as that was another place I got a lot of flashbacks.
My family prefers cots and blankets. Since you may not be camping all that much, you can look for cheap air mattress to lay out on the floor and just bring blankets from home. Let's clarify the air mattress comment. If it's the kind you'll pump up in your spare room, basically an empty bladder full of nothing but air, it'll suck all of the heat out of your budy as you sleep. Your bodyweight crushes the sleeping bag insulation under your body while you sleep, and that is your primary avenue for heat to escape your body.
Now if we're talking self-inflating air mattresses (filled with foam, which does the inflating), or an air mattress with some kind of insulating value to it, they're fine. Better than fine, actually, they're comfortable and warm and good for cooler temperatures. But you want an air mattress that will insulate more than you want one that is cushy and comfortable.

I don't have one for sale, but I did buy one for around that price once in the As-Is section at Ikea. Another thing you can consider is a good air mattress. Even though I have a bed, I still sometimes sleep on mine.
Just an opinion, but I'd avoid the futon if at all possible. I know they are supposed to be the perfect mix between a couch and a bed, but in my experience they end up not doing either very well. And they really do scream "college guy," which I assume is something you are trying to get away from.
I recently faced the same dilemma (and am moving into a place that is about the same size as yours), and while there are some sleeper sofas out there that can pull double duty and look nice, limiting yourself to that makes it much harder to find something you really like.
My honest advice? Find a couch you love and buy that, then buy a really nice air mattress for those days when someone needs to crash at your place. Honestly, the folks that have slept on the one I have claim it's as comfortable if not more comfortable than most beds.
In case you are curious, I ended up ordering a custom couch from Joybird and currently have this air mattress.
Tickets will be available for a while as I didn't buy my tickets last year until April. But always better sooner rather than later. My girlfriend and I went from CT to Defqon 1 2016. I highly recommend getting a tipi instead of a tent because a) you're guaranteed campsite 1 or 2 which are very close to the stages so you don't have to walk as much. Last year my girlfriend and I were all the way at campsite 6 which is about 30-60 minute to go and come back. B) it seems to be a guarantee nowadays that it will rain at Defqon and it gets very muddy very fast. Tipis fight the mud and also you have a mini fridge and electricity

I have some friends that come from Hamburg and they take the train so that's something you could consider if you want to go to Germany.
You're allowed to bring food and water into Defqon at your first entrance. Which means bring all the snacks and drinks you can when you come in or else you're stuck buying stuff at the event which gets expensive.
My girlfriend and I brought 500 euros to spend while at Defqon and we only spent half of it. This included merchandise and food.

I bought mine based on the reviews, I had it inflated in my guest bedroom for 3 months and it never lost ANY air, I have only had it out camping a couple times but it seems really durable compared to the crap coleman ones that I have had 3 of.

it lasted less than a week.. nothing worse than getting up every 2 hours to refill your bed :( no room for a recliner or something? I've had back problems and got so used to sleeping in one I find beds uncomfortable now.. they're just for fuckin now :)
I would recommend something like this. I have been using it for my couchsurfers with a fitted mattress sheet on top and have received nothing but great reviews from it. I've slept on it a couple nights at first to kind of "break it in" and see how it felt and it was amazingly really comfortable.
Get an air bed. They are super comfortable, and if you need to move they pack up to be incredibly small. I got this guy for just over $100. It is huge and very comfy, comes with a built in pump, and is quite elevated off the ground. You can get smaller ones for less with the same double chamber that acts as a mattress and "box-spring".

I have this inflatable chair/ottoman. The ottoman is small enough to blow up inside the fest and it fits in a tiny bag.
They also have these couch/beds I might get for LiB (staying at a friends house for Coachella this year)
Mine has seen regular and some heavy use on and off the playa since 2014. Even hosted an extended 5 person cuddle puddle during one of those frigid nights in 2015.

If you have electric, stick with an air mattress but dont skimp on that. They have nice ones, I slept on one for a year when I first moved here. I also sleep on them when camping. Get a nice thick one and lots of blankets to make it comfy. It really does make a difference.....mine...

My wife and I recently got a bum h of new gear for a trip we have coming up in April. In deciding what to get I did a lot of research price comparison and review reading. My eye was towards price for performance. When I looked at items I looked at online reviews the questions section on amazon(this is a great tool) and even looked up some of the manufacturers. Here is what I came up with and perhaps can help you with gear selection.
Tent I chose NTK Colorado I looked at tents from Coleman, Kelty and a few others and kept coming back to this one. It fit my budget and all the reviews for all their tents were very high. I looked up the company and it said they have been making tents for 40 years in Brazil. I will be test setting mine up today but it looks like a really solid tent for the money.
Air Mattress sound asleep this one I do have experience with as my kid has one and sleeps on it all the time. She has abused the heck out of it and it is still going strong. It was a no brainier for me on this one.
Cooler frosty cooler I wanted a yeti but 600 bucks is crazy for a cooler but still needed something better then a plastic Coleman. After looking at all the yeti clones this one seemed to stand out from the rest.
For sleeping bags what ever fits your budget I wouldn't spend a lot since your car camping you can bring blankets with you for both comfort and warmth.
Camp stove Coleman classic I have had mine for years and the damn thing keeps on going. No need to get fancy the classic Coleman does it well.
My trip is coming up the second week of April we will be going to Zion for four nights then the Grand Canyon for 4 nights then across to Texas where we will be camping just outside of Austin for the Moto GP race. For the tent and the cooler that I have not tested yet I will let you know how they preform.

I don't know how small of a car you're working with, but I am over 6 feet tall and was able to make do in a Buick Century ('99 custom edition, no big deal). I just had a couple pillows, a fluffy comforter and a blanket which made things soft enough. Then I would sleep at a diagonal usually with my feet going into the front passenger seat, which was fully reclined. Sounds awkward, but I made it work. Honestly, the worst part was temperature control, but even that most nights wasn't too bad. I loved the convenience of just waking up and being ready to go.
Depending on the design of your car, you might be able to remove part of the backseat and sleep halfway into the trunk, but if you have a lot of gear with you that could get cumbersome I'd imagine.
I had seen this before and was intrigued, but I didn't know it existed until I no longer had a need for it. I'm not sure if it is worth the price tag.

We bought a soft top for our roof and a car adapter as well. We kept most of clothes and blankets in vacuum sealed bags so we could save room on the trip. Car adapter worked great for the mini electric air pumps, they also sucked out all the air from the vacuum seal bags. This looks for interesting and seems like it would be an ok idea.
Pack snacks. Hit up the grocery store for cheap meals. Make your own sandwiches. Grab a whole rotisserie chicken, some fruit, fresh veg and dip. Healthy meal on the go. And usually left overs for sandwiches the next day.
Also look into hostels or B & B's the off season it tends to be a lot cheaper. See if you can do a drop in swim or something at a recreational centre. Then you get access to showers as well. The drop in rate at the centres for near me for swim are $3.

This thing is pricey, but the long term investment may be worth it.
we use the lightspeed 2 person air mattress. we've only used it twice since purchasing but i did fully inflate it and it stayed inflated for an entire week. i didn't have a lot of weight on it but i had some books sitting on it throughout the week and my wife and i would lay down for a few seconds each day to put some more weight on there.
the bag it comes in is a bit too big but we just put our flat flannel (for the floor) and fitted flannel (for the mattress) in the same bag; throw in the battery pump and you're good to go!
thats what ive always used and it works no problem. however, the coleman, and other walmart/dicks/cabelas etc air beds generally only last so long.. even new they tend to deflate over a night or 2 of use. and after about 6 or so trips they get to the point where they barely hold air overnight... so....

and ive gotta say, its pretty awesome. it packs up smaller, and is way more heavy duty. ive used it a dozen times or so... only ever 2 nights in a row, but ive left it set up in a spare bedroom with a bunch of stuff on it and after sitting there for a week it was no different then when i first set it up.

We have put up out-of-town guests at a friend's house, if you have any close friends with spare bedrooms in larger homes who wouldn't mind sharing. I have a friend with a large basement with a bathroom and bedroom that she would let me use for my older family, they're there basically to shower/sleep only.

I have a full sized air mattress I bought for $45 to use when moving and waiting for my real mattress to arrive. I don't know how good it would be for car camping (I only backcountry camp) but it's damn comfortable and has held up. This is the best.
This is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on bar none. I found it by searching a long time for air beds that didn't have PVC in them, which causes disease and lowered testosterone. It was very hard finding an air bed without PVC or other endocrine-disrupting shit so I'm so glad I found this one.

I'm not a big guy (5'11" 157lbs) and my arms kept falling off the sides, so unless you are a side sleeper or level the area around this particular mattress, your arms will sag off the sides.

Ive used this my past few festivals and its always treated me well. Sometimes needs a reflate in the morning, but never had any issues with deflation during the nigh/nothing severe. It's a little large so might not work great in a regular tent. A cot might be a better option for you, though, both space- & comfort-wise.
