You might enjoy some of Ken MacLeod's work. He's got a trilogy called "Engines of Light" that embodies a similar kind of scope, detail, and memorable characters.

  • Cosmonaut Keep
  • Dark Light
  • Engine City

The story starts out in the Not So Distant Future and millennia later on another planet; involves hyperintelligent squid and networked intelligences that might as well be gods; and a dry humor that reminds me of the Minds in the Culture series.

The only book that the evil Dursleys ever let Harry read is The Complete Ferengi Rules Of Acquisition: Aphorisms, guidelines, and principles to life in Ferengi Culture.

Take a minute to look through them and imagine how Harry's adherence to the Rules would change canon, especially Numbers 6, 17, 21, 74, 168, 190, 208, & 285.

There's a debut novel out called Roboteer out that is, by your definitions, very hard sci-fi. 0% space opera. Full disclosure: I know the author and read some early drafts. But it's getting good reviews, too.

This should be it... I think. My search-fu has been spotty lately.

The Singularity Trap by the same author is also very good. I am hoping that there is a series from this book as well.

It’s Halloween season! Whether you plan on dressing up as a sexy (insert random job title here),  gorging yourself on candy and sweets until you slip into a diabetic coma, suffering a terror stroke on a haunted hayride, or curling up on the couch to watch your favorite holiday movie (Hocus Pocus, obviously), you should add one more item to your spooky to-do list: Read my newest book!

The Night Ripper is now available for purchase as both a Paperback ($8.99) and Kindle eBook ($2.99, or free w/paperback purchase)!

This novel is the first book in my new Watchers in the Dark science fiction series, and has everything your little Halloween Hearts might desire. A haunted spaceship. Hungry vampires. Bloodthirsty pirates. A pretty princess. Friendly aliens. Unimaginable cosmic horrors. Hot Chocolate. Penis jokes. All the holiday essentials!

If that piques your interest and you give it a read, it would mean the world to me if you left a review on Amazon or Goodreads to let others know what you think!

Book back cover blurb follows:

In a seedy bar, on a rundown space station, a young woman hides her identity.

In the lonely depths of space, aboard his damaged flagship, a pirate king dreams of the past.

In an executive boardroom worlds away, a corporate oligarch decides the fate of millions.

And in the darkness between the stars, something evil is stirring.

An enormous starship has traveled the galaxy for thousands of years, her origins unknown and her goals unknowable. Considered a prize to some, a horror to others, and a mystery to all, she is beholden to no one except her long time captain. The civilizations that have encountered her know little beyond the fact that she is enigmatic, ancient, and powerful.

She is The Night Ripper, and this is only part of her story.

This reminds me of something from Cosmonaut Keep, by Ken MacLeod. Try searching for Oort crowd using search inside. It's on page 40. I'd post the quotation I'm thinking of, but it's a spoiler of sorts (so is what I've written, I guess, but it's unavoidable).

Just some random examples from google search that took 10 seconds show that it is used.

The fact that you find it painful to read has to do with your cultural views and education and it has nothing to do with whether the phrase is commonly used in informal context or not. I don't like the word "moist" and I find it "painful to read" but that doesn't mean its not valid.

The first part of the Transcripts series Amazon link. It's by /u/squigglestorystudios

I don't think there's a book of this yet, 5 parts seems kinda small for a book.

As far as I know there's the two major parts of Transcripts by /u/squigglestorystudios, part one which is done, and posted here, and that's what the book covers, Part 0 (prequel) is in progress now.

This arc is new to me, but I'll take my Transcripts hits anyway I can!

My novella Rites of the Renouncer is science fiction with a prominent (and rigorously treated) philosophy of mind component. The core of the setting is hard science fiction—no faster than light travel, no outlandish tech or AI capabilities—with an (as of yet) unexplained fantasy element. Some of my influences are Alastair Reynolds, Gene Wolfe, Greg Egan, Iain M. Banks, China Mieville, N.K. Jemisin, and Mary Doria Russell. In the past, I have worked and done research experience in the space industry and on AI topics.

The blurb:

>The voyage from Earth to Vaskania Prime took more than a thousand years. When the embryo ship and its AI fleet arrived at the planet, its surface water was gone. After extensive terraforming and several failed generations, human beings can now live there, but something strange happens when they sleep. Without explanation they all enter the same Dream World. No one knows what it is, or what intelligence might be behind it. And sometimes, when their bodies wake, their minds don’t come back.
>
>Three decades ago, Viktor Goto left the planet to make a new home in remote orbit on Oneiri Station. With AI assistance, he altered his body chemistry, using a mix of synthetic hormones and neurotransmitters. He spent his time training, learning to extend his REM sleep by several hours and project new powers into the Dream World. Now he’s back on Vaskania Prime to dream again and find out what happened to his childhood friend, Owen.

$2.99 and available via Kindle Unlimited, https://www.amazon.com/Rites-Renouncer-Vaskania-Prime-Book-ebook/dp/B07NSJZ5FQ -- the novella clocks in at 28,500 words, and the paperback comes in right at 100 pages with a small index. I've serialized the audiobook for free via podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/patternshift-synthesizers-and-original-science-fiction/id1455060191

There is a follow up novel, Wake of the Wanderer, planned for mid-November (I've finished draft 1.5 at 93k words, hoping final is in 84k territory). It will be serialized to podcast as well, but slowly (I expect it to take me the remainder of 2019 and all of 2020 to do so).

The series grew out of my retro-future synthesizer electronic music project, PatternShift. I accompany the podcasts with a synthesizer soundtrack I've composed and produced. I make the standalone music with a soundtrack feel and focus, and I started out writing (this round at least) to provide a setting and scenes to accompany the music. But then things got a little out of hand.

I recommend JN Chaney's The Amber Project. I picked it up the other day and read it in like 2 days or something ridiculous. It doesn't talk down to you and it actually involves real science, which most YA books ignore. The dystopian elements were really cool, and the female characters (and male) are all really strong and fleshed out. There's two main characters, each with a story throughout the book. One of them is a woman in her early forties, while the other is her son. You watch the son grow into an older teen, which is pretty interesting.

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/Amber-Project-Variant-Saga-Book-ebook/dp/B00W2AQ1KO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429317754&sr=8-1&keywords=the+amber+project

I heard the sequel is coming out in March. I'm gonna be all over it.

Just started Expeditionary force, still chapter 1. Not grabbed me yet, but will give it time. Bobiverse was epic beyond imagination. I would add https://www.amazon.com/Singularity-Trap-Dennis-Taylor-ebook/dp/B07FBRRL2Z. It was absolutely riverting and funny and Dennis E. Taylor should just continue writing fascinating scifi books.

[heres one] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ABAXFCY/?tag=kbsig-20#nav-subnav)

[and another] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YNZC0I/ref=s9_acsd_al_bw_c_x_3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=YSW5VZ563ZBGGZQEX76F&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=2612251942&pf_rd_i=7078878011#nav-subnav)

[and a really bad one] (https://www.amazon.com/Zombies-versus-Aliens-Vampires-Dinosaurs-ebook/dp/B018XQAA98/ref=sr_1_55?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1473779767&sr=1-55#nav-subnav)

all those books have a lot of reviews so are clearly being read.

And if those aren't bad...then it's like I was saying... are we talking a kid drawing the cover in crayons to qualify as bad?

I'm not disagree that covers matter, I stated that up front. Just that they do not matter as much as everyone likes to think. I repeat though, they do matter... and one should care.

The books I listed above would probably have sold even more copies with better covers... but even with their bad covers they still managed to get a reader base going.
