That's a good choice. I actually prefer the [DW5600] (https://www.amazon.com/G-shock-DW5600E-1V-Black-Resin-Sport/dp/B000GAYQKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498697594&sr=8-1&keywords=dw5600) (non-solar) version myself. (I own both.)
Either way, a way to accessorize (and potentially make a tough watch even tougher is to put on [Bullbars from Jays & Kays] (https://www.amazon.com/JaysAndKays-BULLBARS-Casio-G-Shock-DW5600/dp/B012UVDNN2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1498697572&sr=8-6&keywords=bull+bars). Congrats to your brother!
Hier, mein Lieblingsmesser.
I was hoping to find a hydrostatic type - need something a bit newbie proof!

Strap this on it if all you want is altitude:

I'd love some opinions on the Core watch too because I have my eye on that thing. But as someone with a smaller wrist diameter i'm seriously worried about looking goofy as hell with a massive watch on. Plus i'd have to ditch my faithful old Casio for it, and that's just disloyal.

As far as baro options, there is the Altimaster Galaxy but for our lack of precision (we don't even fly if we can't see the ground anyway) I think you'd be best served with GPS.

I, for one, simply use my phone. I find it's accurate to within 15 feet most times.
This is a good one that a lot of people use.

The 5610 is hard to beat, always on time and more features than you'll probably need. You can get bulbars to install really easy.
