here is my corn's enclosure. details:

  • 421D boaphile plastics cage. pvc with a plexiglass hinged door, 48"x24"x11". i could have bought a cage with a smaller footprint, but i have larger BPs and wanted to keep the stack of cages uniform, plus i would rather go beyond the minimum requirements.
  • heat tape for the warm side, radiant heat panel from reptile basics for ambient temperatures, both regulated by herpstats.
  • small/medium grade coconut husk mulch for substrate.
  • exo terra water dish, extra large.
  • warm and cool hides [back corners] are exo terra reptile caves, large.
  • humid hide [front left] is an exo terra reptile cave, extra large, with a dinner plate underneath it.
  • a large exo terra rock outcrops serves as an extra hide and something to climb on.
  • the "jungle gym" in the center is made of a few pieces of grapewood screwed together, for more climbing opportunities.
  • the leafy vine around the top is from a craft store, just for a little aesthetic greenery. he can climb on it but he can't really sit on it long enough to shit all over it.

Id say look into some slate or river rock. You can get it from landscaping supply stores for cheap, it looks pretty good, and apparently, cichlids love it. Id highly recommends Carib sea cichlid black or speckled sand. It looks clean for forever, and it helps keep the parameters right.

I think most any artificial manipulation of a bonsai would be frowned upon. I think staying as close to nature as possible is the ultimate goal. If like me you don’t live somewhere with natural rocks to collect, I’ve found the cheapest stone I can easily acquire that has decent color and texture (which is necessary for proper root adhesion) is seiryu stone used for aquariums. Here’s another .

Black, or a couple of this. Larger size I have seen only in store, at Big Al's Pets.

I use that 10 gallon pump and it works fine. Combine the frequently bought together items with this air stone will come out around $20. A 5 gallon bucket canbe bought from any hardware store or I bet you can ask for one at a restaurant like Panda Express. They have a ton and I bet they could be willing to part with one. They're food grade so there is that to consider.
