Holy shit, guys. You just buried /u/sainisaab because you have no idea what the fuck you're all on about.

There are HIDs made specifically for reflector housings. They are designated with an "R" in the bulb number. "S" is for projectors. If you actually look at one, like this D2R, you'll see part of the bulb is masked off to reduce output. Here's a D2S (the projector bulb) to compare.

Some car makers include these bulbs stock, from the factory. They are not the blue ones you see retrofitted all the time.

u/topshot069 · 11 pointsr/CherokeeXJ

I did a k-suspension harness, hella h4 bulbs and rampage housings. love how much light they put out without looking obnoxiously bright like LED lights. At the very least you should do the harness. Makes a world of a difference.

For those looking for LED style headlights but still have halogen bulbs, I use these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GD8OL62/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're not LED quality, but they're close. Minor upgrade to your headlights, but also give you a more crisp white instead of the orange/yellowish halogen. Cheap alternative for those interested! \^_\^

I just changed the bulbs to brighter ones. Upgrading the entire headlight assembly would be too expensive for me. These are what I got and they are better. Not perfect, but as much as you can expect from only doing bulbs, hope this link works: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00U1OL44G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HxSJDb4W3QPNE

I used these https://www.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-SilverStar-Performance-Headlight-Contains/dp/B000M5Y720

Seems to be their highest performing bulbs, I could have gone HID's but I didn't want to blind people because of my reflectors. The light is whiter than the stock yellow bulbs.

Just went out and took these for the thread. They're absolutely brighter than my old bulbs, they slightly overpower my high beams. http://imgur.com/a/sM8BQ

I'm pretty happy with them, I'd buy them again when one goes out for sure.

u/hpeng · 4 pointsr/subaru

I depends on what types of hellas you're getting. They have both fog lights and driving lights for the 500 series(ones I have). The fogs have a more dissipated beam pattern so it doesn't blind oncoming traffic, while the driving light are equivalent to high-beams. I installed the 500ff (clear lens) driving lights on the roof rack cross-member because I already have fog lights and so i can aim the beams further down the road. Many states make it illegal to install lights above your headlights though, but its usually not heavily enforced. I made mine removable so if I do get pulled over I can detach it and hopefully only give me a warning. Hopefully that helps.

These http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TWD5GY/ are the ones i have, and these http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005750971-Series-Halogen-Lamp/dp/B002MOAHCI/ are the fog light version. They used to be made in Germany, then Mexico and now the current ones are made in India(heard that the quality dropped but its still decent). Personally I wouldn't want to use the switch they give you if your'e wiring them up independently from your headlights, its crap. I ended up buy a second fog light switch to wire up to run them.

heres an album http://imgur.com/a/Golcy of what I did with my lights.

u/GonadsOfWrath · 3 pointsr/askcarguys

Yes, you can definitely maximize you high-beams. Your high-beams take H7 bulbs. Consider this Swedish test of various H7 bulbs. The best H7 tested, the Philips XtremeVision +130%, increased sight distance by 62 feet over stock.

The good news is that the Philips XtremeVision is an easy, cheap upgrade.

The better news is that the Philips XtremeVision H7 has been trumped by the Philips RacingVision H7 +150%, so with these Racing Visions, you can expect even more than 62+ feet of sight distance for like 2 dollars more. The trade-off is somewhat shorter lifespan, but I'd rather spend a few dollars on bulbs than hit a deer in prairie country!

Buy a pair of Hella 7" Headlamps (ECE), and this.

The lamp housings are european code (ECE or E-code). Technically not DOT legal in the US-- but is your inspection station going to inspect your headlamp housings?) These have a sharp cutoff so they won't blind other drivers. I've been running them for years and I love them. The pattern is far superior to DOT lamps-- it tends to really throw the light forward from the bulbs.

The wire loom from ARB is made of a much thicker gauge wire than the wires that are currently driving your headlights. The same bulbs will run brighter with this wire loom upgrade, but I found that if you add new housings (with nice clean clear glass and a good light projection pattern), and a pair of high-quality H4 bulbs, your headlights will work with the power of a thousand suns.

For bulbs, I'm currently running Sylvania SilverStars, but in the past I found out about IPF Fatboy II 80W/60W bulbs. The low-beam is actually higher than the high-beam wattage. Not sure why or how that makes sense, but these are a seriously great upgrade. Be warned, they run very hot and are susceptible to vibration damage (moreso than other standard 55w bulbs). Don't expect these bulbs to last more than a year or two. They're intense, though.

Hope that helps, because that's what I did to my Jeep. I also added a pair of Hella driving-pattern auxiliary lights on my stinger and a pair of 4" Delta fog lights on my front bumper.

u/SirSaganSexy · 3 pointsr/mazda

No. For some reason so many people seem to think just "aiming" them fixes this. It doesn't, you still end up with dangerous amounts of scattered light.

Please read this: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html

I was seriously considering an HID retrofit until I read up on it. The only right way to do it is with original Mazda HID headlamp housings and hardware, which was out of my budget. Otherwise you're a hazard to others on the road and open yourself up to issues with your insurance in the event of an accident.

I ended up going with Phillips Diamond Vision halogens paired with LED switchback parking lamps/blinkers and have been super happy with how they perform and look.

I've only replaced the interior lights and the LED parking lights on my 2013SL.

I used these for the parking lights (they worked perfectly even though Amazon says they do not fit the 2013): http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-2825-Premium-White-LEDriving/dp/B00AIJY2ZM/

See some discussion in this thread: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=17121

For the interior lights I got the suggested festoons from this thread: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=2773&p=314962#p314962

but the ones I got (which were linked from above) were much larger than the sockets in the car, and I had to bend the connectors a bit to get them to fit.

I've got replacement H11s for the fog lights, but have not yet installed them because it was more of a challenge and am waiting for spring before trying again.

u/CTdashcam · 2 pointsr/Volvo

Your best halogen upgrade will be the Philips Racing Vision. Sylvania Silverstars will produce a whiter light, but no actual increase in brightness. Racing visions will actually be a brighter bulb while maintaining the important things like beam pattern and spread. For $23 you cant go wrong either!

You might want to check your local laws before you put in extra lighting on your corolla. A lot of light bars are considered off road lights and are illegal to have on while on public roads in many states (US).

If they're illegal, i would say invest on brighter bulbs for your low/high beams and fog lights. I run silvana silverstars and they're pretty great in the rural areas of upstate NY.

Edit: link to bulbs https://www.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-SilverStar-Performance-Headlight-Contains/dp/B000M5Y720

u/bam707 · 2 pointsr/GolfGTI

Plug and play, no wiring nonsense and no programming. Also, it comes with two standard H7 bulbs (for the highs) and you move your existing H7s over from the existing headlights.

The ones that came on the car suck in my opinion, I moved to Philips Diamondvision H7s, linked below:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Diamond-Vision-Halogen-Bulbs/dp/B007JZKBVW

These are awesome in terms of color temperature (pure white, not blue at all [after 2 minutes of warming up]).

I got one set of Diamond Vision H7s for low beams (because I use those 99% of the time) and use my stock H7 bulbs for the highs (more yellow). But if you wanna go full flex mode, grab two sets of those Diamond Visions and you'll be SET.

Note: Factory uses one H7 and one other weird crazy running / high beam bulb / headlight. The ones from BEC use two H7s.

The projectors can have either type of bulb - halogen or xenon. In most cases they are not interchangeable, however (at least for the E39) BMW designed the headlamp projectors to be able to correctly project light from either type of bulb. I know this because I just fit my (halogen) E39 with xenon lights this weekend, after a good bit of research.

Here's what I bought:

• 2 Phillips 4300k D2S Xenon Bulbs

• 1 pair of D2S bulb holders (your E60 may require a different type of holder)

• 1 pair of ballast-to-bulb wires

• 2 Xentec 55W HID Ballasts

• 1 pair of Kensun anti-flicker / warning canceling capacitor packs

everything was hooked up in the order listed, and the replacements are plug-and-play. the Xentec ballasts were ordered after everything else - at first I bought two Innovited 35W ballasts, but they were pretty much crap. the light output was less than my original halogen bulbs, and the color sort of flickered around a bit, which was pretty annoying. the Xentec ballasts definitely produce a cleaner, brighter light. I haven't done much night driving with my new Xenon lights yet, however I can already tell that my visibility is MUCH improved.

as for your E60, you may want to do some of your own research. I'm sure some of what I bought could work (certainly the capacitor packs, and probably the ballasts), but I am almost certain you will need different holders (DDM Tuning shows these for the E60), and it looks like those holders may use D1S bulbs instead of D2S. if you're serious about upgrading them, do a google search for "E60 LCI halogen to xenon retrofit" or some variation thereof, and read as much as you can to try and figure out what you need!

u/Oprah_Nguyenfry · 2 pointsr/Audi

You can get whiter bulbs, but whatever you do DON'T be that guy and get blue bulbs. Not only are they blinding, it makes your car look trashy in my opinion because the majority of the time it's a rusted out corolla or beat up ranger that has them.

I can't say these in particular are any good, but just look for something that says white bulbs.

edit: The reviews on Sylvania silverstars seem pretty good

u/230409abc · 2 pointsr/350z

Does brand matter much? It's literally the first thing I'll do right now because I may as well not have any lights in currently based on output.

As said, I'm not getting anything cheaper than £300-350 If I decide to swap them out so I'm happy to try brand new, good bulbs.

OP Here...

The driver-side headlamp failed, so I replaced them with Sylvania Silverstar Ultra lamps ( https://www.amazon.com /gp/product/B008BE04C6).

Shortly after, the lamp appeared to fail again, and I saw the socket had failed.

The OEM Socket on the left, and the unit I replaced it with (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q3DNZ2I/).

The old socket was cut out and wire nuts were used to connect up the new socket.

Well, after a few days, the replacement socket had the same issue!

Is the problem my bulbs? Do the Silverstar Ultras burn hotter? Draw more current? Or is the problem something else?

I have a 2016 EX, but I grabbed some LED bulbs that had very high ratings on Amazon. Most people will recommend spending a bit more than I did, but I was working on a budget. Here’s some pics of the stock low beams vs the LED bulbs I purchased.

these are my low beams

I love how they match the DRLs. My last car had stock HIDs and the spread was way better. Ultimately, I’d like to upgrade to something with a brighter beam and longer throw.

Most of these LED bulbs are designed to work with reflector headlights. We have projector headlights. The bulbs I bought have the LEDs on each “side” of the bulb unit. Ideally, for projectors, also having an LED on the “top”/“front” of the bulb unit would be ideal. This is all my own personal thinking and based of the research I did. I went with these bulbs because of my budget restrictions.

So I’d recommend these of your budget is Similar to mine. I paid $31 for the pair. I also bought these for the high beams. LOVE the high beams. Super bright and a great throw.

There’s some great higher end lighting options talked about over on the civicX.com forums. I just did what I could for both high and low. There are better and brighter LED options out there in the $100/pair area. Research really goes a long way for sure!

Hope I helped :)

u/Archerweiss · 1 pointr/hondafit

The LED bulb has a heatsink on the back, making the physical dimensions of the bulb too big for the Honda Fit's housing. You are correct in saying it's the same bulb because it is the H4 equivalent. Other cars use that same style bulb but have larger housings, making it a better match. The Honda Fit is just not one of those cars, unfortunately. I use these bulbs for my Fit

Sounds about right. Like most German cars, Audis are expensive to work on due to labor and parts. You can save yourself some money by replacing parts yourself. Assuming you have xenon bulbs, they are roughly [$42/ea on Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00480J4JG) for the Philips D2S models (roughly equivalent to the stock brightness). Dealer/OEM prices could easily be 3-4x that per bulb. For the HID module, you could find a used one on eBay for much cheaper or even from someone like ECS Tuning who I've found to be one of the better sites for Audi parts.

u/Clintman · 1 pointr/cars

If your car has incandescent headlights it likely already has halogen bulbs as they've been pretty common for the last 20 or 30 years. You might be thinking of HIDs, but they're a whole different ball of wax.

If you simply want a whiter light you can buy halogen bulbs that appear bright white. I used these in my truck. They're definitely white. They don't actually put out any more light than a standard bulb but the light temperature allows you to see what's being lit better than the yellowish headlight bulbs that came standard on a lot of cars.

Hey,

Here are the links to what I bought:

Lights:
https://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005750991-Black-Magic-Driving/dp/B00318JTCS/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1511108495&sr=1-1&keywords=hella+black+magic+driving+lights

Switch: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EOMQLKC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I first wired the Hella wiring harness to the battery and ground. Next, I drilled holes for the lights, but you need to be careful and look on the inside of the bumper first. There is this structural webbing sorta stuff, so you need to drill between the struts. They are the same on both sides, so its easy to get the lights symmetrical. MAKE SURE THE HOOD CAN OPEN. I almost screwed this up

Next, I mounted the lights and connected the leads. I soldered the grounds together and connected them to the screw that holds the oil cooler on.

Run the yellow wire through the large grommet behind the battery. The switch i had linked is a direct replacement for all the blank switches and it looks AWESOME. If you use that grommet, you will be right next to the switch panel to the left of the steering wheel.

I connected both the green and yellow wires from the switch to a positive end of a Wal-Mart fuse tap. I tapped into the rear windshield washer, so the lights are never on when the car is off. Since i put both the relay lead and switch light lead in the same place, the switch light is always on and doesn't come on with the other dash lights. (it still turns off when the car is off).
