That's why I carry one of these on my keychain.
(Volunteer) Firefighter here.
I have a different kind of answer for you.
The most important things to keep in your car are ways to get you OUT of it in case of an emergency, and supplies to keep you IN it in case of a different kind of emergency.
-------------
For getting OUT, you want to keep a seatbelt cutter and window breaker in your vehicle.
One of the most common ways we see people trapped in their vehicles are due to (1) being unable to undo their seat belt, or (2) not being able to break their window.
You can get [a cheap tool called the resqume] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000IDYKQO/) for about $15, which is a keychain-sized window breaker and seatbelt cutter combo. I keep one on every keychain I own, as well as in the glovebox of my vehicle.
------------
For staying IN your vehicle (i.e. in case of a breakdown, run out of gas, etc...), keep a "bug-out bag" in your trunk/backseat.
Put flashlight(s), batteries, a hand-crank radio, a power converter (so you can plug regular shit into your car), some non-perishable food/snacks (protein bars are highly recommended), and a blanket.
Also, keep an old cell phone charged and ready to go in there, as any cell phone will ALWAYS be able to dial 911 (even if you no longer pay for service for that phone).
Another good thing to keep in there is a portable power bank (or a couple of them), in case you need to recharge your devices and your car/battery dies. Just be sure to re-charge them every couple of months if you don't use them.
This way, if you are stuck in your car for a long period of time, you can even sleep in it if need be and wait for help.
The safest glass breakers to use are key chain ones. Because you aren't swinging your arm at glass you are trying to break. This is what I leave in my car:
https://www.amazon.com/resqme-Original-Keychain-Escape-Black/dp/B000IDYKQO
If you want to leave a knife with a glass breaker in your car what I carry is a $50 CRKT M16-12ZLEK.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050V5KWW
There are a lot of cheap $10 glass breaker knives out there but they use the handle steel to form a glass breaker. I would not rely on them to easily break glass. Edit: especially not from inside my car sitting in the driver seat.
My mom bought all of us one. It attaches to my key chain so if you're in the car, there's no guessing where it is which, to me, makes more sense than having something in the glove box or trunk where someone might not see it.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003PO38P2/ref=twister_B01M8NUUYF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
First thing I would do is replace the cabin air filter. See how much good that does. If still not happy then use Ozium.
> what was that device the cop used to break the window? that was sick
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042VTYXM/
Outside of a new (to you) car purchase the closest thing I've seen to one is what cabbies have been using forever to mitigate swamp ass.
https://www.amazon.com/Kool-Kooshion-60-2930-Beaded-Cushion/dp/B000EEU0IO
I have one of these. It can be quickly pulled off the keychain, it will break a window and cut a seatbelt.
I see your steering wheel has the same problem as mine.
I bought this 2 years ago and highly recommend it. It's only $8 and you sew it on.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PC0G07A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or one of these.
I recently bought this to attach to my keychain, it has a seatbelt cutter and window breaker.
https://www.amazon.com/resqme-Original-Keychain-Escape-Orange/dp/B000IDYKQO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1519872569&sr=8-4&keywords=resqme&th=1
I'm sorry but this tool is useless if not firmly attached to something. Don't buy it. In a case of a collision or flip over, you won't find the damm thing. Instead use this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042VTYXM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_.xhZzbH9QFS7F it does the same thing but it's always on you ignition with your car keys
Consider that a solid percentage (iirc when I did the research it was 3-5%) of the economy revolves around automobiles. I'm talking about numbers of Americans who rely on the automobile industry to put food on their table. Every mile you commute with a bike, you effectively take potential profit from auto manufacturers, the petroleum industry, auto body shops, mechanics, tire shops, Jiffy Lubes, Autozones, insurance companies, the construction companies contracted to repair roads, engineers who design roads, Pilot Automotive: the maker of the french fry cup holder, TruckNutz - The Ultimate Truck Accessory™ etc. etc. Why do you hate America? Why do you hate business? Are you a commie pinko longhair?

Here you go
Anyone that wants to be able to quickly evacuate a car should have something like this on keychains / attached to something within arm distance of all passengers. One part is a spring loaded spike that when used on a side window will shatter it. The other part is a (enclosed) razor blade that can cut through seat belts.
If you can't afford that, some helpful information:

Edit: Check out Mythbusters to see what may happen in a car sinking scenario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3_HEKMgqbE
There's also atleast one other (maybe 2.) In all cases, emergency air had to be used to escape in a controlled environment. Chances are you're dead if you need to wait to open the door.
I'm not a firefighter and don't know the answer to your question, but--I was recently caught in a flashflood while driving in Ohio. ( The water came up from the ground suddenly--due to a sustained torrential downpour that clogged city drainage with trash--rather than laterally, like a river. )
Of course, I survived. But, I can not emphasize enough how important it is to have something in your car at all times to break glass. I got these immediately, once I got home. Haven't had to use them, thank God, so I can't speak to quality.
But--they are absolutely intelligent to have at the ready.
Be sure to attach them to the car so that you'll know where they are. Even in the event of "sudden deceleration".
>Submerged cars, will electric windows work?
Some cars you'll have a moment before the circuit shorts out. YMMV. A partially rolled down window is exponentially easier to break with your hands though than a fully rolled up window. Just grab the pane and yank as hard as you can. Don't try to break a rolled up window without a tool.
> How the heck do you break car windows from inside, at all?
https://www.amazon.com/GOOACC-Seatbelt-Cutter-Breaker-Emergency/dp/B00JJBWMDO the little rounded point part. It works by creating a large amount of force on a tiny area, starting a fracture that will shatter glass. Also you can use most headrests either by smacking them with sheer force or by forcing them down into the sill and creating leverage.
Seconded. I have a dog, and bought a secondhand couch that smelled like smoke. Got a few of these and it took care of it.
Thanks! We had a lot of fun building it, and even more fun using!
I don't remember the exact play area size, but the table top itself is exactly 4' x 6', and the rail is about 5" wide. That makes it about 3' 2" x 5' 2".
I can double check for you when I get home.
As for the cup holders, those can be had here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EDQR4G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
For wood, I just got the cheapest 4'x7' sheeted plywood I could find. I think it was 3/4" thick.
The Rail was made out of the 'select pine' they have at menards. These are pre-planed boards and are generally quite nice. These run a little bit more expensive than un-planed 2x4s and 2x6s. Also note that the pre-planed boards will be smaller than the un-planed variants.
The skirt was made from basic 2x4s and the legs were made with 4x4 posts. I would've saved a couple dollars here had I got the a longer post, but they wouldn't fit in my car so I had to get 2 8 footers instead.
I wanted to keep my design as simple and straight-forward as possible. Be sure and post some updates if you make one!
I got one of these and attached it to the passenger side of the center console
Sorry I took so long! Here it is https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000Q86IQQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493519930&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=foldable+cup+holder&dpPl=1&dpID=41NcgD3GRyL&ref=plSrch
That's cool, I hope you have a off white vest like Gene Kranz :).
Might I suggest adding one of these to the zipper pull of your carrying pouch?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HTU8G4/
https://www.amazon.com/Rotary13B1-Insert-Before-Flight-Keychain/dp/B007UL4JKE/
Looks like a Pontiac G6. Anyway, the problem I see is that there's already a product out there that mists a car's interior.
People abuse the hell out of rental cars. I don't, and you don't, but people in general are gross. The rental companies use these little beauties to de-stank the car.
Stich on steering wheel wrap for $8
https://amazon.com/Lemonbest-C0196-Universal-Leather-Steering/dp/B00PC0G07A/
It's not real leather and it took me a good hour to do the stitching, but it feels and looks really nice.
I use an adapter
Here, take this. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.
This might do it
Mine came with something like this, although mine is a bit nicer I think. Previous owner put it in i guess .
https://www.amazon.com/American-Technology-CH00100-BLK-1-Collapsible-Adjustable/dp/B000Q86IQQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_43?ie=UTF8&qid=1550426531&sr=8-43&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=car+cup+holder
I use it every for a travel coffee mug and fold it flat when a passenger gets in. It's attached to the bottom of the plastic console lip where the passengers left knee would be
I imagine that owner owns the requisite sunshade.
Bonus: There's a photo of red Model 3 w/ the sunshade in the reviews.
A power tool?
Have North Vancouver police never seen a RESQME safety tool? https://www.amazon.ca/RESQME-resqme-OrangeResqme-Original-Keychain/dp/B003PO38P2/
You want to vacuum everything out then you can use Amazon I used it a few days ago works great. Nice smell too.
I've had this one for a year and I have no complaints.
Here's the link for the steering wheel: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00PC0G07A/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And here is the thread: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00N4IKOO2/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You simply line it up on the wheel and measure 8 times the thread for each segment (two 10" = 160" thread - remember it's double fed, and one 20" = 320" thread).
Here is the video I went by: https://youtu.be/n9hNSkl0eKI
I made it up as I went, made sure everything was lined up and tight. If you look closely you can see my knots - but rather be safe than sorry in regards to it coming undone.
It’s actually a 3rd party accessory, I bought it off Amazon. Here’s the link for anybody interested!
BottlePro
I got it from Amazon: Camco Adjustable Drink Holder-... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EDQR4G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
They are actually folding marine-style cupholders I got off amazon. they work GREAT - and fold out of the way when you don't need them :)
The ones I'm using are https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Q86IQQ/ -- but there are lots of similar ones there too...
My list:
NOT PICTURED: Nokia Lumia 635
Tacoma Keys
Remove Before Flight keychain
Pilot G2 10
MEElectrionics Sport-Fi M6 with Comply tips
Tommy Hilfiger Passcase Bifold
Orbit Wintermint Gum
I've been looking and looking to upgrade my EDC, but it's a lot. I really want a bag, pen, maybe new wallet (current one is filled TO THE MAX. Would like to downsize), knife/multitool, waterbottle, etc., etc.
27$ and it's done.
I bet there's even cheaper ones.
You might try a product called Ozium. It comes in gel and spray form. I haven't used it myself, but it was mentioned on another LPT thread to get rid of the cig smoke smell in a car.
https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-Whole-Refresher-Odor-Eliminator/dp/B00G49DVGG
I use these and have been pretty happy with them. They usually keep the "new car smell" going for a few months.
I use this one from rugged ridge. You basically take out the existing dash tray and replace it with this one. Glasses go right below the phone and fit perfectly. I wear Oakley Holbrooks for reference.
Rugged Ridge 13551.16 Dash Multi-Mount Phone Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ONDM07G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ywl5AbETG78CH

Or put one of these on your car key chain. That way you'll always have it near your hand, even if your car crumples around you.
Those are what I have and they are wonderful. When they are folded up they aren't that noticeable. They have different colors available.

Get a fabric keychain. Like a lot of people, I have a remove before flight keychain
I own it - I have a 50qt ARB fridge/freezer and an auxiliary battery and 100W solar panel. This lets me park the truck in the desert and ride my motorcycle around and not have to run the truck to keep the battery topped up.
When breaking car windows you need to break it toward the edge of the glass, not near the center. The edge of the glass is very easy to break because it's tempered glass. If you don't have a tool like this you can use your car key and press firmly on the glass at the bottom of the pane. It doesn't take a ton of pressure. For what it's worth I'd actually break the glass first to get the kid out, then call 911.
They make these, but I don't why anyone would want one when you can have a Collector's Series Blue Dragon Tac-Force such as this.
Ram actually makes a way more secure mount that lets you mount and retrieve your phone just as quick
(though you'll need to attach the rubber ball to the back, sucks that it doesn't come bundled)
Basically the 2 bottom pegs are fixed in place, the 4 side pegs are adjustable but screwed down to be fixed in place, and the top 2 pegs are spring loaded to maintain constant tension on your phone. Not as cool looking as the X grip but a much more secure product.
Ozium spray is great for a short term fix, but they also make a gel (Amazon link) that is quite good - I leave one in the drawer at work where i keep my gym clothes, its been smelling good for months now.
The spray is strong and unpleasant for the first minute after spraying, but that fades quickly.. just be sure to spray a very small amount, the stuff is super powerful!
Another option is an air purifier, i have this one and it keeps my house smelling fresh while also filtering a lot of dust and dander.
Nothing luckily, it couldn't hurt to clean my seats though as they are cloth and will carry smells. I'll be trying this to see if helps maybe clear smell that's coming from inside the air vents, I've had that issue before.
Here's a photo of the back. I'm using an aftermarket phone holder to hold up the screen and encased pi.
Dude throw that slip on steering wheel cover away and sew one on, it throws off the look
A lot of the stuff you unfortunately can't add.... but one thing you can add is a leather sew-up cover for your steering wheel: https://www.amazon.com/Lemonbest-C0196-Universal-Steering-Stitch/dp/B00PC0G07A

Makes the steering wheel feel nice and leathery, and I like the perforated look, feels sporty to me.
my gf bought me a car trunk organizer from amazon, it fits a lot of products and can be attached anywhere! for the price it's a great buy. i wouldnt carry it around with a lot of stuff in it as it gets heavy and feels like the bottom is gonna rip out but that's how it is with pretty much every large surface bag.
https://www.amazon.ca/Drive-Auto-Products-Storage-Organizer/dp/B01F9IS2Y8/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1550469056&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=car+organizer&psc=1
Drive Auto Products Car Trunk... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F9IS2Y8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I found the horn to be way too wimpy so I replaced the stock one with this PIAA pair.
I also didn't want to screw my plates straight through the front bumper or directly against the back bumper so I put on license plate brackets that I think make it look much nicer.
I took the advice from a bunch of folks on the subaruoutback.org forums and put in a new 19mm sway bar. It was a pretty easy install, but honestly I can't tell if the drive is better or it's just a placebo effect.
Then just a couple of simple quality of life things just because:
Thanks. Nice upgrade for about $10. Here’s some more pics.
cup holdies
I would’ve liked to mount them a little further back and higher but that would be right in the middle of the artwork.
Link to the ones I bought.
The same ones are sold by a few companies under a few names but WM seemed the cheapest. Also comes in multiples colors!
Heres the same one at Amazon.
My 2004 base has the cloth seats, but when I used to drive a 93 cavalier z24 with white pleather seats, they were pretty horrible when driving top down in the sun. I feel you, my back sweat was horribly embarrassing.
I was mostly able to fix the problem with those thick bead seat covers, as they put a little bit more air room between you and the leather. Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Bead-Wood-Beaded-Cushion/dp/B000EEU0IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395690608&sr=8-1&keywords=bead+seat+cover
Good luck!
Get a set of car seat beads like these.
Sure they look tacky, but they're effective in creating a gap between you and your seat allowing the back half of you to "vent".
They're not AC, but they help a lot.
This is what I use on my car. I never have hot seat problem or sweaty bottom any more. It's a staple of taxi drivers in humid climates. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EEU0IO/
Or you could carry a tool that exists for this purpose.
https://www.amazon.com/resqme-Original-Keychain-Escape-Black/dp/B000IDYKQO/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1517633296&sr=1-4&keywords=glass+breaker
Ever since the Tax Day Floods, I have equipped both sets of car keys with an escape tool. This device contains a seat belt cutter and a glass punch which makes escape much easier. Watching that woman in the SUV at Westpark and Post Oak and then finding out later that she died was the turning point for me.
Amazon link
thank you officer. be safe.
edit: this amazon link says the product weights 1.4 ounces (40g). is this true?
Am Canadian, carried a pocket knife for years too, but my seat belt cutter/window breaker tool is attached to my keychain.
I always carry one of these on my keychain:
https://www.amazon.com/resqme-Original-Keychain-Escape-Tool/dp/B000IE0F12
I've never had to use it, but I hear they're very effective against automotive glass.
If anyone is wondering, these are the cupholders I used:
http://www.amazon.com/American-Technology-CH-00100-BLK-1-MUGGER-Folding/dp/B000Q86IQQ
I was able to find them at my local Cabelas for $6.99
Air Spencer Squash is my favorite. Hands down
Squash!
Little late to the party, but I would recommend Rotary13B1 - Remove Before Flight Keychain. It is extremely useful when trying to find your keys.
Dammit. Though, I also use a skull from a bottle of hotsauce.
Hello beauty! She looks like a Charles to me lmao
You'll want to get a sun visor for when you leave the car so the seats don't burn your butt? I recommend one like this because it's quirky and cool
And you'll want to protect that ragtop
You'll probably want to have a blanket and umbrella in the trunk (for breakdowns/rain/cold) Keep some sunscreen in there too and wear it even on cold days!
If possible, can you please help me ask him where he got his sunshade? I see this one on Amazon, but I'd like one that fits a bit better on the TM3. Thanks!
Your best bet is going to be a 12v/120V ARB Refrigerator / Freezer unit and a cooler like a YETI or Similar. The small cooler linked elsewhere in this post on Amazon is not sufficient, as it only cools 32 degrees below the ambient temperature. If outdoor temps are in the 90's, that unit only cools into the 60's
The ARB unit will do 2 things - refrigerate your meds as you travel, or allow you to freeze gel packs for use in the Yeti to transport your meds for a few days until you get back to home base. The bigger problem is that both will be huge targets for theft. You are going to have to really secure them and even hide them. If you will have your own service truck, you may be able to build them in and secure them in a compartment somehow.
Given the total destruction in PR, this medication requirement may mean that you can't accept this assignment if the logistics for your medication can't be worked out. The resources may just not be in place to support you until much more power is restored.
Good luck and hope you can find a solution that works out.
It adds up fast so start small and build up if you find it is necessary. Many people get by fine with just one battery and a 100w panel - the key is to not use electricity for heat or motors and recharge as much as you can from the van's alternator whenever you're rolling. Also if you're starting from scratch, try to get 12v DC appliances (fridge, TV, etc) since power is lost in converting DC to AC.
Speaking of fridges and your healthy budget, spend the $800+ for one with a Danfoss compressor since they will sip power and work like a champ for years. The cheaper ones will not impress you.
ZOMG We Need this! Because fucking SAFETY, woman! I do have this on my wishlist, tho it's in orange. I chose orange because it's much easier to see, which would be useful in an emergency.
And oooo, I see you have Beyond Snapshots in your book list. That was an extremely helpful book when I was just starting out. Very good choice! And I just wanna add, I picked up a set of Calvin and Hobbes today for 10¢, can you believe it!? Thrift stores are awesome.
Enjoy your movie :P

This would be most helpful to me! How, well, it could save my life! That's pretty darn helpful. As helpful as it gets, really.
My favorite color is green.
I use this tactical pen because it doesn't look very tactical at all. I'm sure you could break glass with it since I've tested it out on quite a few different things. Ever thought of getting one of these to keep in your car as a glass breaker? Works a lot better and you don't have to swing your arm at the glass to break it.

Oh shit man I didn't even know these existed. Thanks!

I can't give advice for the insurance portion other than just continuing to pester them about the supplement since it sounds like they are giving you the run around till you give up but I'm guessing the dealer can't get in touch with the adjuster just like you.
What likely happened is when the mold developed it got trapped in your vents and since the shop was only paid to clean the carpet, thats all they did. So what I would suggest is finding somewhere local that rents ozone machines and stick one in your car for a day or two. Here is one in Houston from a quick search. At my old job we had one for apartments that were flooded or smoked in and we used it in my friends car once after he had a pound of rotting meat under his seat for a week in the Texas summer (long story) and it got that smell out completely. Also, pick up one of these kits and use it, then replace your cabin air filter which should cost no more than $20 and is pretty easy to do. That should pretty much eliminate all the likely sources of the smell, at least enough to sell it. If the smell still lingers a little I would also put one of these in your car too and maybe stash it somewhere out of sight so if you do go to sell it, it won't be found during the inspection. Try their spray too, that stuff worked wonders and was always a life saver back in my high school pot smoking days.
https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Automotive-PR-039-French-Holder/dp/B00AWY95NM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1469734035&sr=8-2&keywords=french+fry+holder

First- definitely take it to the car wash and get it cleaned. Vacuuming out the ash really well will help. If your seats are removable, you might want to try shampooing them and see if that helps.
Second- change your air filters.
Third- I picked up one of these guys on Amazon and it worked pretty well. I had the Orange scented one, and the fragrance was STRONG for a couple of days afterwards. Like, burn-your-eyes strong. I did mine in the winter though and couldn't properly air it out afterwards because of weather so that might have been why. If your truck is really bad, you might want to do another one in a couple weeks. It really worked for mine- got the scent out of the vents and you can't even tell I ever smoked in my car now.
Ps- grats on 26 days!
You could always bomb that bitch
---
For the seats: just clean the fuck out of them with the hot water extractor and any interior products you have available.
This is the highest level of kill method and exactly what I do when someone wants me to rid mold from their vehicle. This is why I charge $299+ for mold.
I know I'm a couple days late here, but that headrest tip isn't true. Many headrests don't come out at all. I'm not sure what the logic is, I assume it's to discourage people from driving without a headrest.
Either way, it's a very good idea to always have a safety kit including something similar to this multi-tool that includes a window-breaker and seatbelt cutter.
> Submerged cars, will electric windows work?
No.
> How the heck do you break car windows from inside, underwater? Feels like you would not be able to, even with a hammer like tool? How the heck do you break car windows from inside, at all? Can you even do it without a hammer? Metal part of belt buckle?
Ideally, with one of these. Ostensibly the metal headrest anchor poles will work but I doubt you could get to them while seatbelted-in in time. Metal part of the buckle won't have enough force.
Key tool super handy even if it's just for opening beer
Who doesn't like coffee on the go?
Car window break tool 2 pack! I like to keep an emergency kit in my car, you just never know!
Green tea kit kats, because: delicious
I'd prefer you surprise me! I have my wishlists separated by price :)
This is what I use. Works good and looks like an OEM bracket.

Thanks!
Yeah, I got the Brandmotion one. I have the 430N head unit, so I got the package that has the camera that wires into the head unit and comes with the adjustable bracket and the thing that updates the firmware to make the backup camera work. Was pretty simple to install and get set up. I'd suggest getting one of those cheap trim removal kits - it makes the job way easier and you don't risk scratching your plastic trim with a screwdriver.
Something I use every day is the Rugged Ridge cell phone mount kit (https://www.amazon.com/Rugged-Ridge-13551-16-Multi-Mount-Phone/dp/B00ONDM07G) - works well for the phone (sideways) and I can mount my GoPro for trail rides at the same time.
you'll find this back in my pics somewhere, but i went with 2 pieces:
Here's the base:

Don't buy a whole new steering wheel. Then you'd have to get it installed and shit. That sounds awful. If it doesn't come out the way you like just get a cover. No, not the shit ones from autozone. They do make stitch on steering wheel covers. Yes it takes a little time but it looks light years better than a slip over Walmart/autozone cover that will undoubtedly be low quality and feature a car company logo, faux fur, camouflage, or bedazzling for some reason.
A quick Amazon searched yielded this guy. I didn't do an exhaustive search so there may be better deals/colors/higher quality/ect out there; not sure. Also you can do whatever color stitching you'd like if you prefer a custom look.
I'd say it's a much better option than a whole new wheel plus the labor costs.
Just my 2¢
All that being said, I'm quite certain you could clean that with some APC, a boars hair brush and a microfiber cloth. If not, look into a steam cleaner. I'm always impressed with what my steam cleaner can accomplish.
I’ve been looking at this for mine. You can get a two pack as well, for $50. Comes with straps that can be attached to the cleats in the bed.

If it's an emergency call, then you not being licensed wouldn't matter. You can listen to the radio unlicensed without problem, just can't transmit (talk). You'll probably look into HAM on some level eventually since you're preparedness-minded. If you're up in the mountains, and you have the range, it would make sense to look into.
The decent jump packs I've seen range from $150 upward. I can't vouch for any under those price ranges. If that's a bit high for you right now, I completely understand.
The Resqme tool is very affordable and lightweight. You can attach it to your key ring, or hang it from your rear view mirror.
The [Sawyer Mini water filter] (http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP128-Filtration-System/dp/B00FA2RLX2/) is smaller, can be screwed onto standard disposable plastic water bottles, and is capable of filtering far more water since you can reuse it. If you pick up a [stainless steel water bottle] (http://www.amazon.com/Klean-Kanteen-40oz-Classic-Loop/dp/B0093IRPSA/), you can boil water in it as well.
You should always have a backup when it's a survival situation; [Israeli water purification tablets] (http://www.amazon.com/Taharmayim-Israeli-Water-Purification-Tablets/dp/B0077TB65U/) will both look legit and be legit if she actually needs to use them.
There are always more items you might add to a first aid kit, but [this one is pretty well rounded] (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Medical-Kits-Weekender-Kit/dp/B000G7YIL4/). If you want a cheaper base kit (i.e if you want to add your own items), [this other kit] (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Medical-Kits-Tripper-First/dp/B0033B4I9C/) will also do the job.
Battery-free lights can be good, but AA batteries are common enough that a [good tactical light that takes AAs] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006O4CELO) might be a more convenient option.
If she has a tablet (if tablet, go for the 12W) or E-reader (7W), [solar power might be an option] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3LPODY). With [rechargeable AA batteries] (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-BK-3MCCA8BA-Pre-Charged-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B00JHKSN5I) and a [USB recharger] (http://www.amazon.com/SunJack-Battery-Charger-Ni-Mh-Batteries/dp/B00PZ6V99U/), the flashlight and any other AA device (like a [small, separate radio] (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICF-S10MK2-Pocket-Radio-Silver/dp/B00020S7XK)) could work indefinitely, as well as any regular USB-charged device.
[ResQme] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IE0F12/) may not be strictly zombie-related, but if you buckled up as per Rule #4, you may want a way to quickly exit your vehicle if your seatbelt jams and the windows and door won't open normally.
There are a lot of compasses out there, but [this one] (http://www.amazon.com/Suunto-SS012063013-A-10-Compass/dp/B000FEXZGW) is simple, reliable, and won't break easily. It's also designed to be laid over maps without getting in the way of reading them.
[Pocket chainsaw] (http://www.amazon.com/Chainmate-CM-24SSP-24-Inch-Survival-Pocket/dp/B0026OOS60). Won't be useful against zombies, but if you ever needed to cut a tree or thick branches and don't want to carry an axe...
...You can also carry a [hatchet] (http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-78506935-X7-Hatchet-14-Inch/dp/B0002YTO7E/) instead. This one has a short blade, which will cut into their heads and not get stuck like others. It'll also do a fine job cutting smaller branches.
For non-zombie/woodwork related tasks, the [Victorinox Forester] (http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Grip-Series/dp/B003EH82TC/) has your bases covered.
You should also include World War Z (the book, and the movie if you'd prefer), I Am Legend (both the book and the film), and the Walking Dead series (TV, comics, and both seasons of the Telltale game series on Steam).
Thank you so much for this incredibly thorough reply! I love all of these suggestions! Your replacement on the water filter and light seem solid.
I especially love the ResQme suggestion. Pulling together some Zombieland advice with a useful item is an awesome idea!
I'll definitely add these to my shopping list!
I use one of these next to my bed since we don't have room for a bedside table. Works like a charm as a shelf
This is the one I have, used the same one on my Audi and it lasted 2 years no problem. I took the screw out of the map netting and reused the same screw and hole for the cup holder turned out nice. It's on tight with only one screw in it

Keep your car clean. Turtle actually has a really nice interior cleaner which smells like Meguiar's leather conditioner, except, you can use it on everything. I use a combination of those two and it gives a hint of leather scent with a nice sweet berry type of smell.
As far as best car fresheners, most spray ones only last a week or so. If you want one of those that you stick to your dash or you hide in your map pocket's cup holder, japanese ones are the best bet. This one for example is a huge favorite of mine, it's what my dad always got and it looks sick. The japanese squash smell is really clean smelling and its sweet, kinda smells like the taste of soda candy. This brand is great too and one I have personal experience with, lasts a long time, a few months I'd say.
Congrats on your car!!! That's an amazing feeling :) Vroom Vroom!

Well, your first mistake was waiting a full day to vacuum it... You honestly couldn't have made a bigger mistake then that. At least it was soup and not coffee. Did it spill on the actual carpet or on the floor mat and some on the carpet? I would try one of these, they can over power anything from marijuana smoke to dead bodies to soup baking in the hot sun:

Otherwise, continue trying some carpet cleaners or perhaps buy some odor eliminator at a department store.

this doesn't even include the electrical upgrades needed to run it for more than a few hours
ARB, Dometic, etc sell rock solid coolers that use very little electricity. Cheaper to buy a very expensive ARB than upgrading the hell out of your full electrical system.
Current solar panel kits are cheap, running a basic second battery or even having a third on a marine switch, is pretty easy. Adding upgraded alternator, dc to ac converter, wiring etc.... just get a solid DC cooler, and not the cheap ones.

I have this for my motorcycle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088LL7UA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_wArIxbJQKQRQK
Warning though. I bought this for my old lg g4. It's not designed to hold the nexus correctly. 2 of the side notches I can't have installed in order for it to be able to take my phone at all, thus making the only safe way to orient the phone is landscape. But it does work. This phone is not going anywhere.
Ram Mounting RAMHOLPD3U Universal Spring Loaded Cell Phone Cradle Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088LL7UA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_01dpDb3F2E0MD
I use that mount. You'll have to buy the ram ball, Clamps, and u bolt mount or whatever you want to use separately. But the phone mount is awesome! The top is spring loaded and hooks on the phone. It's super secure. Don't use the x mount, they're okay for in the car but not good for a motorcycle. With the one above there is no way it can fall out, but it's also quick to insert your phone into it, and take it out. If you're interested I can try to take a photo of mine with my phone in it, the Amazon photo doesn't do it justice.
RAM Mounts (RAM-HOL-PD3U) Universal Spring Loaded Cell Phone Cradle Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088LL7UA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_Bon258ZIvXniW
You will also need to get the following items:
Ram ball diamond plate: this is so you can mount the phone holder to the arm
Ram arm: so you can adjust the orientation of the mount, they sell many lengths.
Ram mount: this is the final ball which you mount to your bike. They have handle bar balls, the have ones that mount under your mirror, they have ones that mount to the brake master, and so on. Use the RAM website to find all these things, and then Google the part number for the cheapest prices!
Happy riding!
X Grip is great, but you still aren't supposed to use it for motorcycles, even though I use it exclusively on my motorcycle.
Now THIS guy is what you should be using, but I had to get an x grip because my 6P is too fucking big.
I used these vibration dampers between my spring-loaded RAM phone holder and the diamond-shaped ball adapter plate. It worked pretty well for a 7,000 mile trip I took on an Africa Twin last summer (mostly paved, some dirt and off-road), although I did end up having the phone replaced due to recurring dust spots on the camera. I really just try to limit how often I mount the phone there, and use a Garmin nüvi for navigation.
Find a way to mount a RAM ball to the bike. I like this guy personally.
After that, get something to hold your phone that works with a RAM mount. The X-Grip is super popular, however, I did a lot of research before buying and read loads of reviews from people who lost their phone on the highway, or had the thing twisting and turning every which way, and so on. Many people use it and seem happy with it but it's a big YMMV situation, and it made me shy on that product.
While I can't say for certain if the problems I read about the X-Grip are true, I can tell you that after a legit 60,000 miles with 2 different phones mounted in [THIS] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088LL7UA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage) mount, at a combination of city and highway, into potholes and over speed bumps, not once has my phone ever even wiggled. I have the utmost confidence in this thing. The only caveat is that you should use a TPU or hybrid style case because this is just hard plastic, so have something to save you from scratches and so on.
To go along with it you will need one of these for the back of the phone holder. You will also need a RAM arm, I use (and prefer) a 3 inch arm but they make 6 inch and other more complicated contraptions if that doesn't do it for you.
It's not exactly cheap. At the moment, from Amazon, that will cost you about $43 shipped (edit: before tax). However, I will say that this is exact setup has never failed me in 60,000 miles spread between multiple motorcycles and with 2 different phones of decent size. For your reference, those phones were a Galaxy S5 in an Otterbox Commuter and a Sony Xperia Z3+ in a clear Spidgen case. The mount does have room to grow a bit bigger than these if you need it, but not by a lot.
Good luck and happy riding! =)
Edit: Forgot to offer to take pics of the setup on my bike. If you wanna see it all together first, I can do that, just drop a reply.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088LL7UA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Skip the X-grip mount, it's more expensive than the Ram mount specifically made to not let go of a phone at speed. I also picked up the ball mount that replaces a handlebar clamp bolt, and I run the phone mount there if I'm going to do it.
Keep in mind that if your phone has optical image stabilization built into the camera, it's likely a bad idea to mount it to the bike. Lots of reports of folks having borked cameras from the vibrations.
Blowing smoke towards it would probably help, but as long as the room is sealed it won't be a problem. I had one setup in my grow tent and I would just blow smoke into it for it to filter it. As far as effectiveness goes, it will leave the room without lingering smokiness. It will fully neutralize everything within 2 hours for sure.
For added security you can throw in some smoke absorbing Ozium to place in your room that will also pick up smoke as well as deodorize the room. https://www.amazon.com/Ozium-Eliminator-Office-Freshener-Original/dp/B008XNZZ7O
Hey guys! I've been using Adam's Invisible Undercarriage spray to keep my wheel wells black, but was wondering if you guys had a better alternative. I searched the subreddit and it doesn't seem like anyone has asked this specific question (they are usually about how to clean the wheel-well and not about keeping them black). The few other times, people have commented that they used the undercarriage spray (which is what I'm trying to move away from).
Additionally, I was wondering if you guys could let me know what you use to remove odors in your car? I don't smoke or anything in my new car, but as we all know, detailers like to keep everything in as perfect condition as possible. I've heard of people using the following:
Ozium gel
CG Stripper Scent
Ozium Air Sanitizer (which actually makes me gag/cough
CG Bare Bones - seen this recommended, but am iffy about CG as a company
Lastly, this is kind of a random question, but do you guys turn off your AC a few minutes before you turn off your car to dry the radiator and prevent mildew/mold from growing? I know people used to do this in the past with older cars, but wasn't sure if it was still a thing. It definitely seems a bit overboard.
I have a bunch of activated charcoal bags in my car already as well.
I second that emotion. I put this in my car a month ago, and every time I get in, it smells lovely. (Smelled like an ashtray in there before) http://www.amazon.com/Ozium-Eliminator-Office-Freshener-Original/dp/B008XNZZ7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426102311&sr=8-1&keywords=ozium+car

They smell great and last about a month or so. I always run one after I clean the interior. You can get them at O'Reilly for the same price Amazon has them. You won't be disappointed!
Change any cabin filters if you haven’t recently. I’d try something like like this first. If that doesn’t work you’ll probably need some sort of ozone machine or heavier carpet and seat extraction.
I'd highly recommend this Meguiars AirRefresher. It lasts about 3-4 months and smells great and seems to eliminate oders.

https://www.amazon.com/mophie-Charge-Force-Mount-Wireless/dp/B01GJ9IV2O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503673233&sr=8-1&keywords=mophie+desk
The 17mm ball on the mount is the same the desktop charger uses, so I just took the wireless charger off the desk stand and attached it to the dash mount.
This is the one that I purchased, but there are other by SuperSkin and WheelSkin that are a little more high end if that's what you're going for.
I have a 2012, and bought this:
https://amzn.com/B00PC0G07A
it's been on my car for about a year now, still holding up.
This is the one I bought on Amazon. I like how it can be secured in place, so stuff doesn't go flying if I have to slam the brakes.
I got it off amazon. It was about $24
I've had two of these organizers strapped against the back seats since August and really like them. Easy to load and unload using the included handles and they have lots of pockets and several different possible configurations.

I also added a cargo cover: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F697D4T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And cargo mat: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G2KOG8Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or..... BottlePro - Cup Holder Adapter for 32/40 Ounce Hydro Flasks, 32 Ounce Nalgenes, 36 Ounce Yeti Ramblers, 32/40 Ounce Klean Kanteens, and Other Large Bottles. Adjustable and Extendable. Version 2. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M028L5E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9m4FDbTB31844
Using one of these in my '18 with a 40oz HydroFlask and it works a treat. I did have to wrap the bottom with the "Soft Fit foam sleeve" to get a nice firm platform.
BottlePro Cup Holder Adapter
It's still $300 for cupholders. Not only that, they look like the cupholders from a mid 90's Pontiac. Two permanent bulges right next to the shifter.
Don't kid yourself, nobody is buying that monstrosity for the longer glove compartment. It's all for the cupholders.
Here's an infinitely better option. It's even adjustable so it doesn't just hold 12oz cans:
