Total cost: $31.70

Time: ~30 minutes.
Tools required: Hand drill

Now that it gets dark so damn early, I've been using my headlights a lot more, and I noticed that they weren't as bright as they used to be. So, on the advice of a coworker, I picked up THIS headlight restoration kit from amazon, as well as THIS sealer and THIS masking tape (to protect the paint around the lens). The directions were clear and concise and the whole process took about 30 minutes and was extremely easy. It comes with an attachment for your hand drill to which a variety of sanding/buffing discs mount. You start with a coarse grit sandpaper disc to remove the oxidation and then you use progressively finer grit discs to smooth out the surface. Finally you buff and seal the lens.

I couldn't be happier with the results. The lenses look brand new and there are enough sanding discs left over to do at least one or two more cars.

I owned a Crosstrek for a little over theee years. While I had it, it was a pretty great car. I hauled over 20,000lbs. of landscaping stones in that sucker over a 2 month period.

The first big complaint I have about it is that it’s pretty unfriendly to modding. Several of my buddies had other Subaru models and they did nifty things like add cold air intakes and racing tuned computer chips. Sadly, the Crosstrek couldn’t really do any of that so I was stuck with the stock 148 horse power engine. If you’re not really into that scene, it’s a fine car.

The second complaint I have is that the MPG #s they advertise are not accurate. My car was supposed to be 26 city/32 highway. I saw a lifetime average of 23 city/27 highway. Kind of a bummer. You might consider the hybrid if it’s within your budget.

I do have another less important gripe. The CVT automatic transmission robs that car of some power. Even if you get the model with paddle shifters like I did, it just isn’t that responsive. But let’s be realistic... if you’re buying a Crosstrek that you can’t really mod, you’re probably not looking for more power in you mid-high range.

I do have some advice if you do end up going with the Crosstrek (and to be clear, besides those relatively minor gripes, it’s a great car).

  1. Buy an LED lightbulb replacement kit for it (feel free to send me a private message and I’ll get you a link to the one I bought on Amazon). The stock bulbs are incandescent lightbulbs and they just aren’t that bright. For like $15, you can make a really noticeable quality of life change to the interior lighting of that car.

  2. Get a K&N permanent air filter (once the stock filter is ready to be replaced). Not only will it pay for itself 4-5 times over the life of the car, it’ll get you a few horse power more and I realized an average of 1.5-2mpg more with that filter in.

Anyhow, I’d be happy to answer any other questions you may have about my experience with that car. It was mostly good and I’d recommend it to someone looking at the crossover size range.

*edit: a number of people have asked for the LED link so I figured it might be easier to post it here:

It’s worth noting though that the kit I bought is no longer available. The one I list below is compatible with my model year of Crosstrek (2015) according to Amazon’s vehicle matching tool. I highly recommend you make use of Amazon’s vehicle matching tool that lets you put details in about your car (make/model/year). It then it tells you if the part you’re looking at is compatible with your chosen vehicle or not.

    Anyhow, here’s the link:

>Any advice? I love the bulbs but I don’t want to be a complete douche.

Thanks for being considerate. We all thank you.

>These are the ones I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KYZU604?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

No offense, but I took a look at these bulbs and they are literally the worst LED bulbs you can get on the market today. The placement and size of the LED chips in no way, shape, or form even approximates that of a halogen bulb's filament. The H11 LED bulb has two LED chips side-by-side, while a H11 halogen bulb has a longitudinal filament (goes up and down, not side-to-side). That's why they're jizzing light all over the place and causing people to flash you; the LED bulb doesn't even resemble the halogen bulb it replaced on a fundamental level.

>I’ve heard you can adjust the angle to make them less blinding but haven’t found any how-to guides.

You can certainly adjust your lamps downward to get rid of glare, but remember: when you adjust your headlamps down, you lose seeing distance. Think of how a cop can shine his flashlight in your face. That's all glare right there. He can certainly adjust his flashlight down and reduce glare for you, but he'd be less able to see further in the distance and less able to see your face. There's a trade-off between glare and seeing distance. Choosing proper halogen bulbs helps you maximize seeing distance while minimizing glare.

>My night time visibility is fantastic.

No offense but that's what you think. The reality is that LED bulbs don't actually improve nighttime visibility. What LEDs do is flood the foreground (10 to 26 feet in front of your vehicle) with light, and this creates the perception that your lights are great. In reality, light 10-26 feet in front of any car is useless unless driving at 5 MPH or below.

https://www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/2019-01-0850/

>Several different LED replacement bulb kits, each designed to replace a conventional 55-W H11 halogen bulb, were purchased and tested in three different low-beam headlight units. [...] These findings suggest that using after-market LEDs to replace halogen bulbs can compromise headlighting performance.

I'll summarize the study if you don't have access: The researchers purchased 9 different LED bulbs from Amazon, and some of them look pretty much identical to the ones you got. They put these 9 different LED bulbs in 3 different headlamps--two reflectors and one projector.

And guess what?

It was a bloodbath.

27/27 LED bulb+headlamp combinations failed a very basic and limited test of glare and seeing distance. 27/27 LED bulbs+headlamp combinations created excessive glare, less seeing distance, or both versus a basic halogen bulb.

----

My best advice to you is to remove the LED bulbs, send them back to Amazon for a full refund, and swap in high-performance halogen bulbs to a) reduce glare and b) increase seeing distance. Do you have sealed beams? You said it was an older truck. If you have sealed beams, then there are plenty of legitimate LED headlamp options out there--none of this Auxbeam crap.

I used the Mothers NuLens kit which has everything you need except for the drill. Comes with the drill chuck attachment, 800/1500/3000 grit sandpaper attachments as well as the polishing ball and the plastic polish. I took my time, and it took about an hour per light. Well worth the $20 and 2 hours of my time, imo!

Used https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-Two-Step-Headlight-Restoration/dp/B01M75GUJB . Was super easy and there is enough in the kit to do another 2 full cars.

The rubber dust cover makes it a really tight fit. The heat sink is actually about half way into the rubber and is touching it.

I left the lights on for 2 minutes and the heat sink is already hotter than hell itself.

Could it start a fire if I'm driving for 1 hour with the headlights on?

Don't buy anything at deautokey. You're going to pay a 4x markup for absolutely no reason. Find the bulbs you need, and look on Amazon. I used these for my car and they had every bulb I needed minus the footwell and trunk ones. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071LHP5WP/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Nether out of the 5 LED headlights I’ve experimented with have an error code. The “BeamTech LED’s” are literally the cheapest durable LED bulbs you can buy which gives a decent beam pattern👇

I hated how the yellow light from my halogens clashed with the white LED fogs. Decided to try some LEDs I found on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VNBDWPK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Cxv.ybHXZNM1P

They work great in the projectors and produce plenty of light on the road compared with the halogens. They also don't seem to have any shadowing issues I've ran into with HID kits in the past.

u/zerostyle · 5 pointsr/personalfinance

Have you done the previous maintenance intervals? i.e. fluid flushes (transmission, coolant, brake fluid, spark plugs)? Recommend using DOT 5.1 brake fluid, and long life coolant/trans fluid.

Not sure on the civic, but if it uses a timing chain (which it probably does) it's probably due for an adjustment. If it uses a belt you need to change that ASAP. Honda lists their belt replacement at 7 years or 110k miles, whichever comes first.

Might be a good time to replace the battery before it leaves you stranded.

For other minor things, I would:

I bought the Mother’s kit and use it once a year. Someone in here said polishing only lasts about 6 months and they are basically right so I do it in late spring generally and it’s good until the end of summer.

The Mothers kit is nice, it has a pad for polishing with a bottle of polish liquid, also some various sanding pads if it’s really bad. I tried doing the sanding one year but honestly just the pad did just as good a job.

also you're going to want to get a projector kit as GT172I has said. it gives you that crisp beam of light like you see on brand new/higher end cars. here's just an example, IDK if these fit but its a projector kit that you would put inside your headlight housing http://smile.amazon.com/Nilight%C2%AE-Mini-Bixenon-Projector-Lens/dp/B00B21R0TA/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1463609687&sr=1-1&keywords=projector+kit

I used a headlight restoration kit from the auto parts store and had pretty good results. It was this one here which had a buffing and wet sanding drill attachments and polishing compound. My headlights weren't bad so i only needed the buffing pad. If you get a kit, make sure it has drill attachments and that the sanding pads are wet sanding (not dry).

u/TheSplendiferousSpy · 3 pointsr/Miata

Refinish the headlights.

I have tried a bunch of different solutions, the best one is to sand the headlights, from 800 grit > 1600 grit > 2000 grit > 3000 grit, something along those lines. Finish up with a plastic headlight polish like PlastX, then mask the surrounding paint with a cut plastic bag + tape (use painters tape around the headlights during sanding, or even better take them off to sand and paint them), and finish it up by spraying Meguairs Headlight Coat on it, wait 5 minutes, and give it a second coat. Should come out close to perfect, and will last at least a year. Using just PlastX polish will last for maybe a few weeks before fogging again. I tried mixing spar urethane with mineral spirits, 50/50 and that only lasted a few months before fogging up, it dried yellowish as well.

I used this kit for the sanding pads, you can use the powerplastic polish instead of the plastx stuff.

I would heavily recommend a cordless drill for the sanding and polishing

Here are some that I ordered from:

JST Performance - Cobb Accessport, Custom Tune, Turbosmart blow off valve, NGK 1 step colder spark plugs

James Barone Racing - Weighted short shift plate, Aluminum shift cable bracket bushings, Symposer delete, Green Air Filter (because they sell the gray one)

Depo Racing - 3.5" intercooler, catless downpipe, intercooler pipe kit

Boomba Racing - shifter base bushings, short shift lever

Tire Rack, Discount Tire Direct - wheels and tires. Both offer great deals but I go with Tire Rack because they include an amazing road hazard warranty for free with every tire you buy.

Tasca Parts - OEM Ford parts. Some good options: RS airbox lid, RS Shifter, RS engine cover, RS intake pipes

Amazon - ZL1 Rock Guards (tiny but very effective mud flaps), CravenSpeed stubby antenna, 3D (Mugen) style Window rain visors, Philips H11 Xtreme Vision headlight bulbs (same color as stock but 100% brighter), Stainless T-clamps for your intercooler, Motul Multi DCTF transmission fluid, and TONS of Meguiars car care products.

Walmart - best price for Mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic engine oil, often have coupons for it too.

A post I can contribute to! I recently bought [these dope headlights] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VNBEJ1G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for my 16 year old Passport. The old ones were dim and the new ones are fantastic! A 4 star average and over 3000 reviews. Yes, they are 100 bucks but damn, so worth. Just be sure to find out what bulb type the car needs. Mine was a 9003 aka h4. You can find this by plugging your car's info into autozone.com. Look at a couple youtube videos to find out how to install the bulb: Mine had a rubber 'boot' that sealed the bulb in the housing and a metal clip that holds it in place. A zip tie or 2 to hold the wire and you are all set.

They are knock off's but they use Cree LED's and work pretty well. The two suggestions I will give you is 1. use a ziptie for the connector to secure it better, the lock doesn't really work very well. and 2. use a protective 3m headlight film, as the plastic on the headlight seems prone to scratching.

I haven't had moisture intrusion issues with these and they are very bright. In my book it definitely beats 250 for JWS lights. I can find better things to do with that money.

Probably the fans built into the back of the bulb assembly. That and the heat sink dissipates heat to ensure a longer bulb life. I have Auxbeam in my '16 and the I get the same buzzing noise. My low beams don't generate the buzzing noise but when my highs are on, they do.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with this Meguiar's kit that includes the keep clear. I say this because my wireless drill cannot hold a charge and to do both headlights it took me a long time.

I don't know how much clearance you're going to have but if you can find a sealed beam conversion headlamp, you might be able to retrofit a projector like this, Nilight 2.5" Mini HID Bixenon Projector Lens for H1 Bulb Car Gift:chrome Shround https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B21R0TA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_qQ5MybAAYM97K and install an H1 LED bulb.

This projector will give you a cutoff beam and even has a high beam solenoid inside to flip the cutoff plate away.

The back end might get too deep to fit between your triple and gauge cluster but it's the cheapest thing I can think of. It might be a challenge finding a chrome cover for the back.

u/SlyBrownEye · 2 pointsr/Jeep

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. Here's the projector housings, hid kit, and headlight housings. I had to cut holes in the back of the headlights and jb weld the projectors in, but it was all pretty simple. Also had to use a step drill to cut holes behind the headlights on the Jeep to clear the backs of the lamps.

u/JacobeyWitness · 2 pointsr/370z

I used Mothers NuLens to restore and remove oxidation and then finished with Meguiars Headlight Coating to prevent more oxidation. Only time will tell how well the coating worked but the headlight restore process was no big deal if I have to do it again in a year or so.

Amazon is loaded with them; for example - these are $90 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B376YOE/ref=psdc_318323011_t2_B07HPGMZ6N and I have seen lights as lows as $60 and much much higher. Just make sure they either have an anti flicker built in or if you need to order them separately. Either way nice jeep!

u/hiryuux · 2 pointsr/infiniti

You get what you pay for with led bulbs. $0.40 Chinese led bulbs will be typically be pretty blue and dim, with short life expectancy and limited warranty/support. I went through three cheap sets in my first year of owning the G37 actually.

The ones in your eBay link have 5050 led chips which are older and don't output as light as newer led chips like 5630, 2835, 5730.

I would suggest Diode Dynamics HP5 bulbs in 6000k for maximum brightness and reliability. $20/pair of bulbs (you'll need three for doors, dome, and license plate, maybe four if you want to do the trunk too). Pricey but I can vouch that these are bright, true to color, and won't flicker within a few months. Plus 3 yr warranty with solid customer support. They also have some cool easy diy tail light and fog light mods.
https://www.diodedynamics.com/store/listed-by-vehicle/infiniti/q50.html

On the lower budget spectrum, these Amazon sets have newer 2835 led chips which are a lot brighter than 5050s. The build quality is good but I'm unsure on longevity since I only tried them for a week or two now on our Honda Accord.

I second these suggestions. I replaced my maplights with these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DE7UC6C. It was a PITA removing the old bulbs. Ended up using packing tape to wrap around the bulb to pull them out.

And b/c I bought the wrong dome light bulb, I'll be replacing my dome light with this tomorrow https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AHVND32

Please don't do what I did and go off a youtube link, double check these will all work in your Taco first.

Also, if you're going to be prying things apart I'd suggest a cheap (<$10) trim kit. I already had a cellphone repair kit so I used one of it's plastic pry tools.

u/Cowsmoke · 2 pointsr/genesiscoupe

Awesome glad I could help! You’ll have to get creative with how you install them since they have they’re own driver box kinda like HID’s (unlike the aux beam where it’s built into the light) So you’ll have to mess with it for a little until you can make it fit, and You’ll need these adapters but you probably already have them if you have the auxbeams. And if you’re looking for fog’s these are what I have and I have no complaints with them, they’re pretty bright and match the same kelvin value as the headlight LED’s

u/Migitoncrack · 2 pointsr/MitsubishiOutlander

I used the following adapter:

And for the LED Lights you can use any any H7 bulbs I believe. I used a company called AuxBeam.

u/wrexecute · 2 pointsr/genesiscoupe

I got these for the ambers. Still kickin since 2017. Can't say the same for the tag light or interiors tho.. Avoid big packs of cheap LEDs, they're just waiting to flicker.

Low Beam I'm quite happy with these although they don't really fit inside. You'll need something like this and optionally a pair of these to seal it up, but a lot of ppl don't.

u/smelllikespirit · 2 pointsr/mazda

I'm running these Auxbeam LEDs on my Mazda 3 2016. They're really good for my needs and have a much better cutoff line than the kensun LEDs. I first bought them for my girlfriend's 2016 civic and grew jealous about how much better they were than my kensun ones lol.

u/Backbowl · 2 pointsr/Tacomaworld

I got these Auxbeam ones for my 2019 low beams. Be careful, if you buy ones with a big ass fan in the back, you will have to remove the whole headlight to replace the bulb. In order to do that you would have to loosen the fenders and remove the bumpers which to me is excessive to replace bulbs. These are easy and with a bit of jiggling, they go right in. Awesome bright light.

Is that the halogen bulb with three prongs that presses into this weird white connector with a rubber boot? I have that on a '12 Shadow Phantom. I hated the headlight, it was garbage, and undrivable on dark country roads. I pulled the whole thing and replaced with a 7-1/2" LED Monster.

Since you're on the road, and purchasing/modifying a new headlight isn't an option, have you verified you didn't get a defective bulb (happens more than you'd think)? Pull the bulb and try to blow out the three prong connector. When I pulled mine apart, there was a ton of corrosion in that stupid thing.

Reconnect the bulb, but leave it out of the headlight bucket, and turn your key on. Wiggle the receptacle and see if it'll light up. Toggle the high/low beam switch a ton more. I found a spot on mine that the light would cut-out (due to corrosion in the switch), and it took quick a few cycles before I could get it back on...

If you've got the halogen, it's actually dual filament, so if it's the bulb or the switch, the high beam should still work and you'll be able to ride with that (still not bright enough).

Do all of your other lights work? Is the bike starting up easily? Have you checked voltage on the battery?

Final thought: If you trace the headlight wiring, there's sometimes another connector (Honda Proprietary) for the whole stupid lighting rig. I found a small white three prong that looks like the turn signal connectors, just outside of the hole for the headlight bucket. If present, it could be jostled/disconnected.

Safe ride, man.

Hi,

I updated the signaling and lighting for my 1986 Vulcan 750. It was easy to do, improved visibility, and shaved off all those dangling blinkers giving the bike a sleeker look.

The integrated taillight was bought off of eBay for around $US 28.00. The guy that I bought from is out, but I've found what looks to be the same product from another Chinese vendor at Motor-Integrated-LED-Tail-Light-Turn-Signals-for-KAWASAKI-VULCAN750-1986-2003

After removing the rear signals and the rear tail lens and brake light bulb I was able to connect the LED by putting its bayonet style connector into the brake light bulb socket and splicing the common, left and right signal wires using some Bullet terminals. I put some masking inside the lens (to hide the wiring) and put the lens back on. Easy peasy 10-20 minute job.

I also removed the front signals and replaced them with some LED triangles off of a sport bike, using the unused capacitors from the LED Tail Light kit to make them work as both signal and running lights.

Aalso replaced the old dim yellow headlight with a Daymaker style LED with integrated turn signals - which looks sharp and makes a HUGE difference in nighttime visibility (both ways). From Amazon - LED Daymaker Headlights 7 inch Round 50W Motorcycle Driving Light with DRL Turn Signal and Halo Ring

This mod was a little more involved because the new LED headlamp didn't fit the original "bucket" so I had to order a new headlamp housing and cram it all it. But it now looks like it could be original equipment, except that none of this stuff existed in 86.

Unfortunately, this was not a simple headlight swap. To make it work, it required a completely different headlamp assembly (bucket, trim & mounting rings). I used the headlight assembly off a [Kawasaki 1976-1979 KZ750-B] ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Z1-900-KZ650-KZ750-KZ900-KZ1000-H2-KH-Chrome-Bucket-Head-Light-Assembly-/142427700153 ). You will reuse the mounting rubber inserts and bolts /nuts from your factory bucket.

Photo of my bike

I got some inspiration from a [How To video retrofitting LED projector headlight on a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750-B] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-GI4-VdCIA)

Yes you are seeing white at the turn signal lights. When I am using side marker lights, low beams or high beams. Those turn signal lights will be white. But when I turn left, right, and hazard it will be back to amber.

Front turn signal LED lights(7444NA):
https://www.amazon.com/iBrightstar-Newest-Bright-Projector-Replacement/dp/B077P5CDSX/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523552526&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=ibrightstar%2Bx001Cy5ax1&th=1

Front head lights type: 9003/H4/HB2. If you want fog lights it is H8(H11/H8/H9):
https://www.amazon.com/LED-Headlight-Bulb-Conversion-Kit/dp/B075J8VQDX/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1521933924&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=h4+led&psc=1
DO NOT remove the original manufacture Dielectric Grease on the H4 socket. Unless you using some other brand of Dielectric Grease.

Side marker lights(2) has a bunch of names too. Type 194, T10, W5W(These are also the same lights for driver side(1), front passenger side(1), back passenger(1), trunk(1) and license plates lights(2)):
https://www.amazon.com/AUXITO-Chipsets-Replacement-Courtesy-License/dp/B071LHP5WP
So, this 10 pack you will be using 8 out of 10. Remember if it doesn't work turn it 180 degree.
https://imgur.com/a/gewfk

Back Reverse lights and back turn signal lights. Type 7443 you will have to get 2 of this. Making it 4 LED bulbs.
Not to worry that the LED is white for turn light. Because the back housing is RED. So White LED + RED = Bright Red. Be warn: We didn't use resistor front and back. So, we are getting hyper flashing.
https://www.amazon.com/iBrightstar-Newest-Projector-Replacement-Reverse/dp/B06XQWPKKX/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523552407&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=ibrightstar%2Bx001mz3ma3&th=1

For the back lights, you will need to use the philip screw driver, the X kind. So, you can take out the housing and install the LEDs. The very top red part are turns on when you use Side markers, low beam and high beam. And those top red lights are LED already. So you don't have to change those. All you need to do is the White one and the bottom Red one for both side. So you need a total of 4 LED type 7443.

You might want to get trim tools. Unless you want to use a t-shirt and a flat head screw driver. But having trim tools can help you with wire management for heads up display and for dash cam wire. I do recommend the trim those thats 13pcs or 14pcs. Because that 1 or 2 extra tool with give you the option to pop those plugs under the front of the car if you are going to replace the fog lights(H8 according to the manual).

I installed the a129 last week. Seems to be running ok but haven't tried parking mode as there is still complaints about it's recording algorithms. Waiting for a more reliable firmware update. I had an a119s that ran fine in high temps for 3 years. Due to the steep angle of the windshield or the fov of the camera I opted to install my camera to the right of the rear view mirror. It looks more centered than to the left of the mirror. I haven't gotten around to running the rear camera. Im going to have to run it through the door sill rather than the headliner as there's no where to tucknin that thick wire for the rear cam. Also my rear hatch glass has dark tint on it so I'm not sticking the cpl on that.

Idk if it was just my dark tint making it hard to see but I've replaced the rear back up lights with these. Reverse is MUCH brighter now.

Right now I'm looking for a door sill vinyl with "fit" written on it. My fit already has a rather noticeable scuff on the driver's door. So far the only where I've seen a good looking one is Alibaba but I'd rather not buy from there. Amazon has one but it's not the same and also doesn't have prime shipping. If I can't find anything I'm problably going to add a "carbon" universal sill decal.

Changing the headlight bulbs won't void your warranty.

If you want a white light then you'll have to either swap the bulbs with an LED kit (cheap), or replace the entire headlamp assembly with an LED assembly (expensive).

There are cheaper LED kits than the one I linked but I would be wary of their quality. Replacing the assembly costs more and takes more work, but the light output is much better.

I ordered these for the regular headlamps. Theres a place on the metal right by the lamp to stick the double sided adhesive pad They look nice, just put em on today and the sun's still out so I haven't seen em at night yet. I can link a pic when it's dark. I used regular halogens for the fog lights cause I kinda like the contrast of the ice blue on top and light yellow on the bottom.

When what dried? Did you seal it? If you used a sealer before you buffed and polished the lens that's what could have caused this. What you need to do is restart. Sand the sealer off, and then take it easy with the sanding. And by sanding

I mean wet-sanding. I hope you weren't just using sandpaper and no lubricant lol.
Wet-sand it back down till it's smooth and hazy. Then take some rubbing compound and then buff the hell out of it till it's clear. I went crazy with mine and buffed them for a couple hours each, but i go overboard on everything. After it looks clear, wipe off the excess and let it dry. Then spray your sealant on it. Like spray paint if you get too close it'll drip, too far it won't cover fully.

I actually wet-sand mine with the 3M restoration kit: https://www.amazon.com/3M-39084-Headlight-Restoration-Kit/dp/B006VB8JTQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1493511799&sr=8-4&keywords=3m+headlight+restoration+kit

And for a sealer i used: https://www.amazon.com/Presta-137306-Headlight-Sealant/dp/B0082LFOFA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493512126&sr=8-1&keywords=renulite.

Expensive sealer I know. But I did research on it and a lot of shops use it. They actually give 3 year 30k mile warranties with it when they would redo headlights for people. So it's a good product. I used it on mine about 4 years ago and it's just starting to come off.

Hope this helps!

Good tires. I like the General Altimax RT43. Regular oil changes. Regular tire rotations. Fresh fluids all around. The simple easy shit we all should be doing really.

You could also hit up your local walmart/auto parts store and buy the 3M headlight resto kit. Will get the haze off the lights and leave them shiny new for a bit. Helps a ton when there is no haze on the lenses.

Yes! HID retrofits, first mod that I did within 48 hours of buying the car. Highly recommend, and it cost like $80 total

I followed this thread: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=454405

Granted there were some differences, for example I used a heat gun instead of my oven, but generally I followed that pretty closely.

These are the projectors I got: https://www.amazon.com/Nilight®-Mini-Bixenon-Projector-Lens/dp/B00B21R0TA/ref=cm_rdp_product

Here is the cheapest set of projectors I could find online. You still have to buy ballasts and bulb, and a relay wiring harness. It runs about $100.

You don't just drop in projectors typically. Usually there is some dremel modification required.

u/DracoAzuleAA · 1 pointr/Saturn_Cars

You may actually be able to find some pre-built projector housings for yours. I looked and looked and looked, and the only pre-built projector housings I could find for the Vue were for year models 07 and up. Mine's an 03.

So I had to build mine. And the parts I used were pretty cheap so you might save money just building your own anyways.

Here's the parts I used

Nilight 2.5" Mini HID Bixenon Projector Lens

2x 23inch Dual Color White-Amber Switchback Headlight LED Tube Strip Light DRL Daytime Running Light & Turn Signal Lamp For Audi-Style Headlight

RetroRubber OEM Grade Butyl Headlight Sealant, Black

2pcs 12V HID Xenon AC Car Ballast 55W HID Xenon Bulbs Lamp For Auto Headlights For H1/3/4/7/8/9/10/11 9005 9006

HID-Warehouse HID Xenon Replacement Bulbs - H1 8000K - Medium Blue (1 Pair)

The paint I used was just a can of Rustoleum semi gloss black I got at Walmart for a few bucks.

I also purchased a separate set of headlights to do all this with, as this was my first time. I wanted to be able to take as much time as I needed with it. I can also easily switch back to stock at any time for whatever reason. I would suggest you do the same, if you're planning on building them.

To get them apart, I preheated our kitchen oven to 220 degrees. I lined an old baking pan with a wet towel and set the headlight on it, then put it in the oven for 10 minutes. This will soften the sealant enough so that you can pry the light housing apart.

Then when you're done with all of your modifications, remove as much of the old sealant you can and then line the edges of the housing with the new sealant. Heat it up like before and compress it back together.

Led and hid replacements don't work nearly as well in a reflector lens, they do much better in a projector style housing. As in, they'll have bright and dark spots and blind oncoming traffic.

That said, these are what I put in my wife's Acadia (projector headlights) and I'm super happy with these, even though I had to massage the housing to fit.

Switching to LEDs would allow OP to remove all the complicated added circuits from the HIDs. Is it possible this is causing his problems? I believe it would help rule it out, at least.

Either way, I do recommend switching to LEDs if you can. You get rid of that extra wiring and LEDs are plug and play. I bought these and they are brighter than my OEM halogens but not as bright as most HIDs I have seen. They do spread a lot of light with the reflector housing, but I imagine your HIDs do the same thing anyway.

u/Zombiii · 1 pointr/ToyotaTacoma

I purchased and installed the Opt7 LEDs for my low beams and am very happy with them so far. My main reason for going with these is the thread on TacomaWorld with many users being happy with the results. I didn't like the yellow light of the stock halogens, especially when compared with the white LED DRLs on the headlights.

The Opt7 LEDs match very close with the DRLs. The light output is about the same as the stock halogens but looks so much better in my opinion.

I got them on Amazon but I think you can find them cheaper in eBay.

My aftermarket headlights have a broad light at night and not really focused on the ground even when I adjusted them down. Worst part is when they are on they mess with the radio performance. Googling says cheaply made lights put out noise that could affect radio frequencies. The previous owner of my jeep put them on and I just been living with them. I was willing to spend for the JW speaker ones but if I can save $400, more money for other mods, lol.

u/Commander_Sam_Vimes · 1 pointr/944

I went with these and I've been very satisfied. DOT compliant beam pattern, no flicker, and good output. Been very happy overall.

u/atetuna · 1 pointr/CherokeeXJ

I used these for my sidemarker lights and they are significantly brighter than the original bulbs. All my exterior lights are now LED except for the headlights, along with some of my interior lights. The only part we both share are the reverse lights. I didn't like using red LED's. The output through the lens was less than using white LED's. I may try your XOR gate to see if output can be increased even further, but it probably won't unless I switch bulbs. The bulbs you're using are probably brighter than mine. The sad part about the sidemarkers is that there's very limited space, so big 1000+ lumen bulbs won't fit. These were the first bulbs I tried for the sidemarkers. I think I have them installed in my map lights now.

The all day aspect is why I converted to LED. I don't want as much risk of draining my battery, and that happened on a long weekend camping trip when I left a map light on, which caused me to finally address my interior.

And these switchbacks: https://www.diodedynamics.com/switchback-turn-signal-leds-for-2013-2016-hyundai-genesis-coupe-pair.html

I ended up glueing the adapters onto the existing adapter already on the LED with Loctite. The hardest part was stuffing the low beam pig tail into the housing. It takes a bit k, but it is doable. I uses a 1 1/4" spade bit to drill a hole in each low beam cap for the LED fans to vent. A holesaw bit may work better. Everything else was plug and play. I still need to swap out the turn signal flasher to fix the switchback's hyperblink. I wasn't able to do the high beams because there wasn't enough space to tuck the LED pigtail in there. Any ideas for that?

Anyways it is super bright! Way brighter than the Sylvania zXe halogens I was using before. Fog lights are next then tails.

Heat is not a problem, in my experience. I've been using Beamtech H4 replacements since late last year. Specifically, these:

https://www.amazon.com/BEAMTECH-Headlight-8000Lumens-Extremely-Conversion/dp/B06XHD78DQ

I like these particular units because they have no moving parts. No cooling fan, but rather a heatsink base. No fit problem - they are drop-in replacements for the stock lamps.

It's been routinely around 100°F in the afternoon, this summer. You'd think if there were a problem with the LEDs overheating, I'd have seen it by now. I haven't.

Beam pattern is comparable to stock H4 lamps. Maybe a little better to the side on the "low beam" setting.

That said, low-beam upper cutoff is not quite as sharp as it was with the stock H4's. But, I haven't had any indication that I'm blinding anyone. If I did, the headlamp aim could be adjusted.

A good way to work out aiming is to only change one bulb, then point the bike at a wall or garage door at night (or in your garage with the door closed, anywhere you can clearly see the pattern). Bike must be held upright, but not on a center stand, as that won't give an accurate picture. You'll quickly see whether the LED lamp is throwing a higher or lower pattern than the stock bulb, and can adjust accordingly.

I moved to LED headlamps to save power, because I needed it for heated gear.

Be aware you're going to have to adjust the cutoff so you don't blind anyone. On our cars, there's a hole in top of the headlight assembly to access a gear to move the headlight up or down. You can use a Philips screwdriver to adjust it.

HIKARI Ultra LED Headlight Bulbs Conversion Kit -H11(H8,H9), Prime LED 12000lm 6K Cool White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077BT6M6Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_s3iRDb241SQKJ

Keep in mind I have the 18 SI so I’m not sure about differences between the 19/20.

I have an LED headlight assembly I'd be willing to sell you. I had it on my SV650 originally but I decided to buy a halogen headlight assembly instead because I like how it looks better than the LED. The led assembly is pretty nice though, I bought it from Amazon for $100 and it has Integrated turn signals if you decided to use them. It's still in good shape, I'd say $50 would be fair for it. Here's what it looks like on my bike: http://imgur.com/a/xraOlqr

Here's also a link to it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078MVXJBL/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_g.RADbQ49QRX4

I bought it on amazon with the bracket 7” LED Headlight . The plug for the headlight fits the plug on the bike, it also comes with an adapter if you have a newer bike with a different plug. Check your bikes schematics to wire into the left and right turn signals and find the wire that powers your running lights to hook up to.

non-existant. I've attached a link to the Headlights. Theses are not specific to my bike so I had to do cut the plugs out and connect the wires manually, and I believe they are done right.

Is one of the wires in the old turn signal unnecessary? Can I just splice one of them to my new turn indicators.

Don't tint your headlights. unless you're just talking about the non reflective chrome surfaces. Not the lens.
