I didn't breaatfeed for the same reasons. Everyone told me my milk would come in, and that I shouldn't pump but instead should apply cold compresses and take allergy medicine (benadryl at night, pseudoephedrine during the day) to dry out.

In the end, my milk never came in. That may have been due to my medications though, but there's no way for me to know.

My hospital provided unlimited formula and nipples for the duration of my stay. I switched brands after we left and had no issues. I brought some of my own just in case and didn't end up needing it.

At home I make a pitcher from 2 cans of concentrate every day and a half and keep it in the fridge. I pour a fresh bottle every time and feed her cold. When we go out we bring ready to feed bottles and a clean nipple and feed at room temperature.

Buy these bottles:

https://www.amazon.ca/Gerber-Graduates-First-Essentials-Bottle/dp/B00CXVJKB4

They are cheap, with a slow flow nipple and the nipples screw on the ready to feed bottles, making your life easier. I keep 15 on hand so if we skip a night of dishes we still have bottles in the morning while we run a load.

Oh, as for the types of formula, as I said I use concentrate at home and ready to feed when out. Concentrate is easy to prepare and not that expensive, in fact brand-name concentrate is cheaper than brand-name powder. The issue is that generic brand powder is the cheapest of all. Personally due to my health issues I won't use powder until baby is 4 months old but plenty of people do without issue. I use concentrate with pre-boiled water.

ETA: everyone is bringing up the skin to skin after birth...IMO this really is irrelevant to formula feeding. If your birth goes well you should definitely do skin to skin, it's a really positive experience and great for bonding. You can let the baby suckle a bit and honestly getting colostrum isn't super easy. I did it and it was great, the highlight of my birth experience. I didn't bring a bottle out, she got fed after I was wheeled to my postpartum room. The nurses set me up with formula and everything.

I just use a sponge, but I agree it’s a bit tight. How about a [bottle brush](OXO Tot Bottle Brush with Nipple Cleaner, Navy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0771FGXBC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wVT6BbP654K4C)? Plus, they throw in an extra nipple cleaner for good measure. Never know when one of those will come in handy.

Tommee Tippee breast milk containers rock. They have a larger screw cap so you use them to store jelly beans, M&M's, Snickers Pieces, granola, etc. They weigh nothing. The caps are easy to unscrew and then screw back on while still moving. They don't open by accident leaving mice food in your backpack or an attractant for bears.

u/AHusbandAnd2Cats · 5 pointsr/beyondthebump

There's this thing too so you can measure out individual bottle amounts and then keep a bottle of water in your bag as well.

We could never get our bottles to dry, and we use glass! We ended up getting a sterilizer with a drying feature. It was obnoxiously expensive but damn dry bottles are really nice. I'm not sure you'd be able to swap out the nipple without causing leaks or screwing up the venting system, but someone else might have a loop hole they can link.

Otherwsie, where are you looking for Size 2's? I got all of mine off of Amazon. Here they're $8.99 for 6.

Or if you're using the wide mouth bottles here they're $10.95 for 6.

This one is really cool. If baby suckles, it flows in a stream. When baby takes a little break, it only drips. The outer nipple is extremely soft and squishes kinda flat like a boob too.

I saw someone bought one of those medicine pacifiers ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FNV6352/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=A2UILHLLDUMCAM&psc=1 ) and put breastmilk into it and those froze it. I plan to make some of these for my babe for a cool treat this summer.

I boil bottles when I need to sterilize them. We use this drying rack and like it.

I had the same problem. I waited too late and started to panic. I tried a ton of bottles and she ended up using the bottles I had tried initially - avent natural. I'm not sure if she didn't know what to do with a bottle or she was being stubborn. I purchased the breastflow bottle and I think that might have helped her transition, since the bottle works by compression and suction. The other thing I did was give her a bottle when she first woke up with a size 3 nipple, which kinda forced her to drink it. After that she finally got the hang of it and I went back down to a size 1 nipple. I only nurse her at night now. Good luck.

u/OptimisticToaster · 3 pointsr/Parenting

If doing formula, this was awesome. Cut-down on the spit-up. More importantly, the thing works wonderfully for hot chocolate - gets rid of all those stupid powder clumps.

I forgot one other. Mother-in-law sewed some baby ponchos. Just Google it. No hassle with getting arms through coat sleeves or anything. Just flip this over the head. Worked really well for buckling into the car seat.

u/milagrita · 3 pointsr/beyondthebump

I don’t use the Dr Browns bottles but I use the Phillips Avent Naturals and four fit really well in this bag . It says it can hold six, but I’m assuming that’s six narrow bottles and not the wide ones. My LO usually eats 3 bottles at daycare, but I pack a fourth just in case.

For my daycare, they ask me to mix the formula at home. I use the Dr Browns pitcher and mix it up the night before, put it in the fridge over night and take it to daycare in the morning. They have a fridge (since mixed formula is good for 24 hours), and it works out just fine.

Double check with your daycare/provider and see what they prefer. Also- I almost spent the money on fancy bottle labels (because they were cute lol), but my daycare has specific labels they wanted me to use and give me for free. Your daycare may have some similar so it’s always good to check in with them first.

Good luck! ❤️

We have these and they are amazing! They’ve held up really well and are the right price. 😀

u/Emeryn · 2 pointsr/InfertilityBabies

D's the same way- he takes medicine much easier when he's calm. When he isn't, I have to use one of these to get the medicine down him. He'll suck on it like a pacifier with super reproachful eyes, but it's easier than a syringe when he's thrashing around.

Try to nap while she's sleeping? You need some rest. <3

So since she might be drinking it out of a cup instead of bottle, which will be more difficulty to shake, you might want to get the mixing pitcher and make enough for the day to store in the fridge. It's absolutely fine to store formula that has been mixed but not drank out of in the fridge for 24 hours! So you can mix a set amount, store it, and pour out however much you need. I do sometimes microwave our bottles, which is not recommended because it can form hot spots. I just make sure I mix it really well afterward and squeeze a little in my mouth to be sure it isn't too hot. Roo hates cold bottles and Aoife might not like them cold since she's used to body-temp milk!

Our schedule is like this:
7, wake up
Between 7-8, bottle (6-7 oz)
8, breakfast (eggs, oatmeal, whatever)
10, snack (Cheerios, fruit)
11-1, nap
1, bottle (6-7 oz)
2, lunch
4-6, nap
6, bottle (4 oz)
7, dinner
9, bedtime bottle (6-9 oz)

Sometimes he'll have another 4-6 oz bottle in there too, and sometimes he'll have a midnight bottle. You might want to start her at just 4 oz or so since she isn't used to it, so that you're not wasting too much. If she finishes it, give more! She should probably have between 24-32 oz at this point, depending on how much solids she gets down in a day.

You're supposed to dump formula after they've drank out of the bottle/cup. Sometimes we will put it straight back in the fridge, and add it to the next feeding. I hate wasting, and so far he hasn't gotten sick.

I sterilized everything once, when we first bought it, but now we just wash things by hand. I use tap water to make his bottles since we have very safe water.

If you're going out and about, they make cool little containers that you can bring along a premeasured bit of formula. Like this. And I'll pack some bottles filled with water, so I can just dump the powder in when he gets hungry.

I think that's all for now! If I think of anything else I'll pop back in :) Good luck! It might be a rough week or two, but it's never been super easy for you anyway. You got this!!!

Wabi Baby Electric Steam Sterilizer and Dryer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTK7X15/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bFb3BbKRXGXKV

This is what we use. All the parts fit great and it even has a dryer, so you can dry them before you sterilize them.

u/TheChrisCrash · 2 pointsr/parentsofmultiples

The wife and I sat down tonight and started building our Amazon registry for about 30 minutes until she got too overwhelmed. I was looking at the bottle washers/sanitizers/dryers. I saw this one had some decent reviews and it looks like it could fit a lot of bottles and other stuff. So quick question... is a sterilizer that uses steam also considered a "washer" or do you usually wash, sanitize, and dry?

u/shnuffleupagus · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

I think logistically this is easiest, especially if you're on your own. You may need to help your baby adjust to formula first - some will take it right away and others won't. I would also suggest finding a way to get baby to adjust to cool or lukewarm formula since that's likely to be what you're getting. When travelling I've had luck warming up a bottle of cool water in a cup/mug about 1/2 full of hot water, which they have on hand for tea.

I would actaully go for powdered rather than pre-mixed. It's lighter to carry and you can find it more easily. Something like Gerber Goodstart is available pretty broadly. And then on the plane and in the car you can use a dispenserto pour out pre-mixed portions.

There are waterproof labels of all kinds, often used for labeling kids' bottles or sippy cups at daycare. They stay on in the dishwasher, etc. Like these

u/CaffCafftheGiraffe · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

We used the oxo and Simba formula containers to hold dry formula. I did not care for the dr Browns formula container. It was too hard to make sure all the formula got out.
Oxo - OXO Tot No-Spill Formula Dispenser with Swivel Lid - Teal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079KD453M/

Simba - Simba Twist-Lock Stackable Formula Dispenser and Snack Containers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FDMRMS8/

These containers can be used for transporting snacks when baby is older

We also use shaker balls in the formula bottles. PWODUX Formula Mixers - Mega Pack (9 Mixers) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06X6MGBGT/

I was not worried about air bubbles that much. Any bubbles rise to the top and baby drinks from the bottom.

We weigh the formula because we use hypoallergenic and it’s about $40 a can. Then we didn’t have to make 2oz if 1oz was enough.

The Wabi Baby electric steam sterilizer/dryer works great for those bottles (which I love as well). I have tried some of the other ones without drying and it was always a wet mess. Luckily, Amazon Prime has a great return plan!

Where's the aspirin?

My list is baby things. Lots and lots of baby things. I need them all. Do you have a spare $400,000? Because that's what it's going to cost to raise this child.

Here are my items that I feel I need the most, that add to $20:

Wipes. Twenty bucks. Aaaaand we're done.

Told you babies are expensive.

Other combo items could include:

Pacifiers, $8.99

Onesies, $12.99

Aaaand we're done again. See, expensive.

More:

Crib Sheet, $9.99

Homemade baby food containers, $9.99

Aaaaand we're done again.

I agree, once I got over the initial hurdle of working in into our routine it was so easy especially when we got some of these, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tommee-Tippee-Closer-Nature-Dispensers/dp/B000UUO61Y !

Hi there!
We don't drive either!
So if your pram has a shopping basket, just stash the blanket in there, much easier. Check if your pram has hooks for your handbag / baby bag, if not you can buy hooks in nearly any baby shop / Amazon / pharmacy. I just bought two loose hooks which were on velcro and I can attach them to the pram.
After newborn.... snacks when they start eating. Baby cereal bars are handy. Sippy cup with water. Bottle of water for you. (You can also get cup holders for prams, that's where I put my water bottle!)
Anti bacterial wipes when they start moving / touching everything.
I usually always have 6 nappies in the bag, no matter how long I go out. Baby wipes, Vaseline, change pad. Two outfits for baby and for the love of God, pack a spare outfit for you! Just something simple like leggings and a cute dress or something. You don't wanna be on the bus into town, meeting a friend for lunch, holding your baby when your baby's nappy decides to leak all over you....(a super fast trip into Forever 21 and the bathroom and I finally got to have lunch lol)
As for formula, we only ever did formula too and my MIL found these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B000UUO61Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1498429368&sr=8-2&keywords=baby+formula+pots

You just take a bottle or two with water and bring the correct amount of formula in the little pots, easier than bringing the whole box!

And, a pram toy! Preferably something they can grab hold of and chew on when they get older.
Mine has an elastic with wooden clowns on it tied to the pram, I only tied one end cos she got frustrated she couldn't eat them...

Hope this helps, it's all I can think of for now!

Have you tried the Medicator Paci? They automatically suck on it and the medicine just goes right on down. Works for our LO if he needs to take Tylenol, although I'm sure this tastes worse!

u/AstarteHilzarie · 1 pointr/Mommit

Gripe water. Really helps calm baby when he has an upset stomach. I've been told to combine it with gas drops, too, though I haven't gotten those yet.

Munchkin Medicator A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. We had thrush and I had to give LO sticky medicine 4x a day. With the syringe and the droppers it took about half an hour to give him his dose, along with screaming, crying, smacking, and a few times choking. Yellow sticky liquid was everywhere, no clue how much he actually took, and baby was amped up and unhappy. It sucked. I orderd these and it was a freaking miracle. I measured his dose, put it in his mouth, and within 30 seconds he had happily drained it, no mess, no crying, no choking. Not a fluke, either, he used them 4x a day for a week with the same results every time. Possibly the cheapest baby item I have bought, also the most valuable.

Some way to play lullabye music. His crib has a mobile that plays some classical music (currently used for soothing while we rock him, because lol at the thought of him sleeping in his crib.) I also use spotify to play a playlist I've made of music by the band Rockabye Baby. I like it because I can enjoy my music and sing along with songs I actually like instead of singing Rockabye Baby the song a million times. They cover all kinds of stuff, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, the Cure, Black Sabbath, Green Day, No Doubt, Blink 182, Adele, and so on. You can probably find something you will both enjoy.

Definitely extra sheets. I had two for the pack'n'play bassinet. I frantically sent my mom out to buy more after doing a million loads of laundry because in the early days blowouts happened a lot. Now I don't really need them, but I'm okay with having extra, I can use them to keep the playard cleanas he gets older and makes playing messes.

Baby bathtub. I was going to do the sink amd then a laundry basket. That idea died quickly. I found a secondhand bathtub that has a seat inside and it's up on a stand, so it keeps baby up at a reasonable height, and it doesn't take as much water as filling the whole adult bathtub. The sink was functional, but baby wasn't happy about it and would get cold super fast. Now he loves his baths.

u/Faythy · 1 pointr/breastfeeding

Can try a few things, One of the bottle recommended to me by the lactation people was this one from The First Years. They have to suck on the bottle like the breast in order to get the milk. http://www.amazon.com/The-First-Years-Breastflow-Starter/dp/B001G4RWG4/ref=sr_1_4?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1342829902&sr=1-4&keywords=the+first+years

Also, Try having her 'trick' him by putting the bottle in her armpit and having him suck on it like it is her breast. See if he will take it while being held and tricked. For my DD we had to for awhile just squirt a little milk in at a time til she went through her 4 ozs lol until she finally took a bottle from grandma.

u/nightshark86 · 1 pointr/daddit

We have that and still use it for the valves but found it too small for all the bottles. Get this one link

One of the most useful things I got was a two-tier drying rack for bottles and stuff that needs to stay sanitized. It’s like $8 on amazon and legitimately holds SO much stuff! It’s a little janky but seriously gets the job done well and keeps an amazing amount of stuff organized and clean.

Gerber first essentials

https://www.amazon.ca/Gerber-Graduates-First-Essentials-Bottle/dp/B00CXVJKB4/

They are slow-flow, and also have medium and fast flow for later when your baby is older. They say they reduce air intake. I also have Avent wide-neck anti colic bottles and I haven't noticed any difference in air intake between the two, so it's good for me. They are easy to clean, with a small nipple. The nipple also screws into standard ready to feed formula bottles, so great for when you're out of the house!

Oh, and they're $1-$2/bottle. Easy to stock up! When you're formula feeding you want a LOT of bottles on hand, I like having 15-20 available.
