The Hasbro one was the original made in 1968 and looked a little different.

This appears to be some kind of similar knockoff.

I got this foam gym for my son when he was 8 months old and I think it really helped him learn to move his body. He's 10 months now and still climbs all over it, and when my 2.5 year old nephew comes over he has a blast on it as well.

u/Grkgdss00 · 11 pointsr/beyondthebump

Not that model, but I have this asshole which is just as annoying!!

Our kid is the same way. The remote controls? Loves them. The toy remote control that lights up and plays songs that my mom got him as a substitute? No interest. We got this as a hand-me-down from a friend. "Meh." The chewed up tennis balls that belong to the dog? BEST TOY EVER.

u/lordnecro · 9 pointsr/Parenting

I got my niece an Oshaberi Doubutsu Talking Animal Ball and my sister almost killed me after 15 minutes of non-stop squeeking. I can't even imagine an airhorn. Video of the sound

Haha I have ideas but they’re not entirely for newborns:

music activity table

Ikea play tunnel

Matching tent

bouncing horse

Pillow Pets

Here’s some just awful toys my daughter has gotten:

Evil duck

Demonic Sesame Street toy

thanks I hate it talking bear

Pretty much any V Tech toy to be honest.

I’d have a harder time naming toys my daughter actually enjoys to be honest. :|

u/angryherbivore · 6 pointsr/beyondthebump

We did Santa pics with my 6 month old last year. SO CUTE.

My kid turned one a few months ago, and he got a ton of toys from friends and family. My suggestion would be to pick one thing that you know your kid will really love, and get her that. If you have family, there will be no shortage of presents for her.

My kid really loved his ball popper, his drum set, and anything that makes music.

u/cmcg1227 · 6 pointsr/Mommit

You don't need either the 4 door or the bathtub, but if I was going to pick one, I'd pick the 4 door car.

For an alternative to the bathtub, you're right, they have the little bathtubs, and they also have tummy tub baths that would fit in your sink or in your shower. Additionally, your toddler very well can take a shower. Obviously your toddler can't take a shower unsupervised, but your toddler can take a shower either with you, or with you helping them from the outside. Its actually SUPER convenient to just have your toddler shower with you.

One more tub alternative is to just get an inflatable tub and then install a removable shower head sprayer for your shower. You would put the hub on the floor of your shower, and then fill it up with the sprayer, and then use the sprayer to rinse your LO as well.

White slots are PCI, black slots are PCIe. I am familiar with this here device and the concepts it teaches.

Fisher-Price BeatBo. We have the small version and I absolutely hate it but my daughter loves it. The small one we have stands about 5” and is so incredibly loud I’ve had to put multiple layers of tape on the speaker to make it a reasonable volume. I keep this toy hidden as much as possible.

u/gigglesmcbug · 4 pointsr/Parenting

Raid your kitchen. Set out some wooden spoons, a spatula, and a couple pots for her to play with.

But honestly, it sounds like she's a normal six month old. Six month olds have a very limited attention span. Playing with one toy for a few minutes then getting bored is developmentally normal. It's ok to let her be bored for a few minutes. Ignore initial cries for help and see if she picks up a different toy on her own.

Some things going forward you might buy are blocks, a ball similar to this one, and a ring stacker.

u/WaterBearDontMind · 4 pointsr/BabyBumps

There is no rush to buy toys as others have said. Tummy time should begin at birth and you could try to get toys that will hold LO’s attention in that position before they learn to reach for things:

  • B&W books like this one
  • A mirror that can be propped vertically at infant eye level
  • A tummytime pillow in the same shape as Boppy but smaller, goes under newborn armpits

Next up would be a playard (the Kick n Play Piano one was super popular in our Bumper group) to hang things overhead that they’ll eventually bat at or kick. The Manhattan Toys with lots of strings or loops are great first toys to grasp. You might also like some plastic chain links, which can be toys/teethers on their own at first and graduate to tools for tethering toys in the stroller/car seat.

If you do the math it’s not so jaw dropping!

297 (total price) /3 (months) is 99

99/month is still pretty pricy for my family, as I think most people in our socioeconomic group can agree with (first time parents under the age of 27, just barely breaking into our career fields)

However, the package comes with 6 toys each

99/6 is 16.5

Given that there is science to back up how beneficial these materials are for the child’s development at that particular stage in their life, $16.50 per toy per month is not a price I am against paying. That’s probably around the price people spend on plastic crap that doesn’t benefit their child’s development or eating at McDonalds per month anyway.

Let’s look at one of these packages and compare pricing on amazon, shall we?

https://montikids.com/we-recommend-level-4/#gf_11

This package is the next age appropriate set for my child. The material it comes with includes:

A level two object permanence box
A push ball set
A stable ring stacker
A peg box
A four piece first shapes puzzle set
A Ball tracker Maze
And five cloth storage bags

On amazon we have:

A comparable object permanence box (29.99)

Montessori Object Permanence Box W/ Drawer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XZVT3KW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_P4s3BbNETTNEJ

A wooden ring stacker (12.00-but not explicitly the same as it does not come in the the same set up as the Monti Kids set. I wasn’t able to find one more similar, but based on typical industry pricing that I’ve seen I’d put something more comparable at around $20. However, for these purposes I will be using the $12 price point)

Melissa & Doug Rainbow Stacker Wooden Ring Educational Toy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000067PWG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Y7s3BbV9QWTX1

Push ball tower (currently on sale but usually priced at $19.99, as listed, so I will be using the $19.99 price point for these purposes.
Also, the closest I could find to the Monti Kids set but not the same. I personally like the Monti Kids set more because it is more developmentally appropriate for my child and we are also teaching him not to hit, so we are avoiding things like hammers and drum sticks)

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pound and Roll Wooden Tower Toy With Hammer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VO3GME/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_w.s3Bb1QXHJ0K

Peg Box (35.99 and nearly identical)

Montessori Materials Imbucare Dowel Peg box Set Toddler Preschool Toy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ET0BVE0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.ct3BbFBB4RW0

First shapes wooden puzzle (21.99 and extremely similar)

Montessori Single Shape Puzzles Wooden Puzzle Board Knob Wooden Puzzle Geometric Shape Puzzle Early Education Material Sensorial Toy for Toddler Shape & Color Sorter (4 Pieces) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CRFTX4C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1et3BbQ9FR3T2

Ball Tracker Maze (86.95 PLUS 24.98 shipping. Extremely similar to the Monti Kids set NOTE: this is the only item I found with listed shipping; everything else does not have shipping added)

Amazing Tracker Ball Maze https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BTIG88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tgt3BbPFDHVN4

Cloth storage bags (comes with three each- 27.98 for two sets, so you will get a bonus storage bag!)

Misslo Cotton Breathable Dust-proof Drawstring Storage Pouch Bag (Pack 3 L) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WP4L1K8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_eit3BbDEZ3DTK

So- lets do the math. Just for the physical items (which are similar but not the exact same) ordering off Amazon comes out to:

$259.87 without tax or shipping (aside from the noted item)

Leaving us with a $37.13 difference.

If all the Monti Kids order came with was the materials, then sure, why not save 40 bucks (assuming shipping and tax doesn’t come up to that amount)

However, the Monti Kids order also comes with online classes for you to take so you can better understand and help your child’s development, one-on-one support from certified Montessori instructors, a “toy timeline” helping you track your child’s development and when is best to introduce each new material, and 10 instructional videos on how to set up your space so your child learns the as much as possible through their play.

I’m okay with spending that extra $40 bucks.

Please note: I have not ever ordered through Monti Kids. I am not a sales person or affiliated with them in any way, as I had not heard of them until today. I did this comparison for my own research as we have several holidays coming up- and also a little bit because u/guardiancosmos is kind of going out of their way to be a jerk. Super exited about Monti Kids though!

u/andgiveayeLL · 3 pointsr/NICUParents

31/33 days in the NICU and both my twins are in early intervention, which sounds scary but it's great! A physical therapist comes to our house once a week and works with them on tummy time, neck control, etc.

Preemies are definitely going to be "behind" on their milestones, but they typically catch up. If your doctors don't understand that preemies are behind and that's ok, then get new doctors. If your doctors understand that preemies are behind and are offering services like physical therapy/early intervention to help them catch up, take them up on it!

By 4 months adjusted, I agree with your doctors that your next goals are to be pushing up on arms and getting rid of those head bobbles. But your doctors shouldn't be shaming you and should instead be giving you these goals and ways to help meet them (early intervention, physical therapy, suggestions on ways to make tummy time more pleasant).

Speaking of tummy time, I definitely think tummy time on your chest counts. My babies both hate floor tummy time. Here are some suggestions for you that I've found to help with my babies who hate floor tummy time:

  • Keep doing tummy time on your chest. It's helping her get stronger even if it's not as "intense" of a work out for her as floor time.
  • Does she like mirrors? We use this with my son who loves a mirror and it buys us an extra minute or so with floor time (remember, your goal isn't to go from 0 enjoyment of floor time to loving 15 minutes of floor time in one step. It's to go from 0 seconds of enjoyment to 5 seconds. Then from 5 seconds to 10. etc)
  • How about music? We play music right next to them and that distracts them through some floor time
  • Do you have a couch or chair? Try doing tummy time on the couch so that her head, if she were to pick it up and look forward, is looking out into the room. Place yourself in front of her (so you're seated on the floor). She may like to be able to see far and wide from her high vantage point on the couch, and you're right there to reassure her and provide a face to watch too
  • How about a boppy? Or a prop pillow? We have had great luck with this one
  • How about a rolled up towel or receiving blanket?
  • How about in the air (getting her used to being in a position that isn't on her back)?
  • Remember that babies are pretty good at feeling what you're feeling. If you're going into tummy time tense and stressed, she will notice and stress herself.
  • Try not just placing her on her face, but starting her on her back, then gently rolling her to her side. Let her hang out on her side for a bit. Then gently roll her from her side to her front.
  • Try to learn when her crying means "I'm frustrated because I'm working really hard to lift my head and it's heavy!" and when it means "OK I'm done now. Nothing more productive is going to happen this session." Let her fuss through the frustration and keep trying. Pick her up and soothe her when it's the second kind of crying.

Just an idea, you could ask if she thinks getting something similar but made for kids might be appreciated after the incident with family.

Toys my son has loved:

Baby Einstein Musical Toy

Baby Einstein Musical Table (you can tip it on its side or take the legs off)

Little Tikes Activity Treehouse (this one is 6mo+ but has essentially a disco ball-like light in it)

u/Pixielo · 3 pointsr/Buyingforbaby
  • An inflatable tub shaped like a duck! It's adorable, and Monkey likes to play in it when it's not bath time, which is pretty cute.
Vintage vinyl squeaky books that are fun to touch.
Summer's muslin swaddling blankets; they rule.

  • A decent portable swing; we take it w/us to friends' houses for dinner, and let her sack out while we eat. It's awesome. When one of the straps broke, their customer service had a free replacement and a fluffy toy in the mail to us the same day. They were actually a joy to deal with, and I will look for their products in the future.

  • Rechargeable batteries. Best. Invention. Ever. We bought a few sets of the spacers so that buying fresh C/D batteries is a thing of the past. We've gifted them out too.

And of course, we have some cute toys for her, but she seems to prefer a single disposable plastic spoon, my rubber watch, a length of knotted cord and our hands/feet. Of the cute toys, the Infantino Stacker is the clear winner for versatility. The base makes a whistling sound, and the rings all have different textures and make different sounds. We combined that with a set of rings and can clip them to her carrier, her car seat, her jumper, her crib, etc., awesome product.
u/CluckMcDuck · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

board books, the standard wooden 'ring stacker' toy, plastic 'links', a soft ball (4 inch diameter? ikea has a great soccer ball this size!) and a sit/stand activity block (https://www.amazon.com/ALEX-Discover-Busy-Wooden-Activity/dp/B004LL0VV2)

all are things my LO still plays with at 16mo!

u/CookiesNinja · 2 pointsr/rubberducks

I found one of these machines broken at a mall. I played for free and my Dad played free too! Both left with free ducks. And lastly at WinCo their rubber duck machine was broken and I left with another free duck...

Starting a collection of ducks now and I bought 50 plain yellow ones yesterday lol. 'Bout to add this bad boi to my collection https://www.amazon.com/CelebriDucks-Donald-Rubber-Duck-America/dp/B01LJYL2MU/

I’ve been obsessively researching toys for our first birthday/Christmas. I’m all about toys that serve multiple purposes and can be used for a couple years and through multiple children. Here are some ideas I have came up with...

activity cube - there are all sorts of different models and brands depending on budget.
Radio Flyer Walker Wagon
Hape Scooter

Pikler triangles look awesome, but they are a little out of our budget. I might see if my husband can build one though.
. pikler triangle

We are also looking at getting some high quality wood blocks - but they might be a little old for right now. Maybe for second birthday.

u/beegma · 2 pointsr/Mommit

I have 2 boys as well as working in child development. For a high chair I would recommend one that you can strap into a regular chair and also has a removable tray, for example. You don't need the straps (they get super dirty). I cut the straps off my space saver high chair and threw them away. For toys I would recommend the basics and stay away from plastic and things with small removable parts. Get wooden blocks, a cloth ball, a simple [doll](https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Brilliant-Basics-Babys-First/dp/B0015KTV2C0, stacking cups, ring stack. Babies also like to rummage through things and bang on things, so clear out a floor level kitchen cabinet of all the things she can't have (cleaning materials, food, etc) and fill it back up with pots/pans/large spoons. Let her go to town pulling everything out and banging it together. Obviously, when she's gotten to the stage where she can open and go through a cabinet on her own - then it's time to baby proof ALL the things.

I still feel rotaries are my favorite engines. Really miss driving my 7, so someday I'd like to get it back running! So enjoyable revving the engine out.

You know those spinning seat toys? Like these? It suddenly clicked for me on how to start going on a manual when my brother just said "think if that toy as the clutch". Literally right after hearing that, I was able to drive rofl.

u/RomeroChick26 · 2 pointsr/Parenting

My 1 year old loves this : https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-Discovering-Music-Activity/dp/B005P5D7G4

Also, toys that make music in general.

u/qqpugla · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Hi and welcome! Dragon or Gryffin? . . . My favorite Amazon thing off the top of my head would be the tummy tub we got for our son because he was super colicky when he was first born and sometimes this is what kept us sane.

u/FunnyLittleDuck · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

Some things that my little one has enjoyed that range from free to not so free:

  • Putting tissues/blocks/anything he can't choke on in a box and letting him pull them all out. You stick them back in and repeat.
  • [Tobbles Neo] (http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Brain-Toys-FA070-Tobbles/dp/B0078A8HH8) is a great toy. It is perfect for him to pick up and hold on his own. We can stack them for him and he can knock them down. Or he will pick up the individual pieces and examine them. They are very easy to stack so little ones with minimal coordination can stack them as well. All the older kids that I've had at my house still pick up this toy and play with it. So it is not free, but I think it will be a lasting toy.
  • With supervision - my kiddo loves to get lost under a muslin blanket. He will figure out how to pull it up on his face or off his face. Or he likes to see it floating down around him. Roll around in it.
  • A wooden spoon or baby bowls and dishes. All of these things are his size and he loves to pick them up and examine them. Easy and fun.
  • Board books - they are thick enough that he can't cut himself and he enjoys just smashing them around and flipping through the pages.
  • [ALEX Jr. Play Cube] (http://www.amazon.com/ALEX-Busy-Town-Wooden-Activity/dp/B004LL0VV2/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1426621230&sr=1-1&keywords=alex+activity+cube) is fantastic. This is probably a bit outside your criteria, but my 7 month would play with this non-stop if we would let him. He loves to pull up on this and play with the bead maze on top or roll around to the different sides and whack all the moving parts. It isn't cheap, and I wish it had a big base so he could pull up on it with out us holding on to the other side. I went out on a limb with this at Christmas, but it has been a huge hit. I also think as far as children's toys go it has a pretty design. It isn't your run of the mill plastic monstrosity.

    I hope this helps some!
u/baconandicecreamyum · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

I really want this: Vtech Bizzy the Robot). I think my daughter would have loved it and it looks like a better version of the Fisher Price Beatbo. She loves loves loves dancing.

This [arch] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VJKT0QU/) was a hit. I got it for $20 used.

u/thunderpaw · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

I found two things that worked wonders with my daugters tummy time.

  1. A baby mirror you can put in front of them. She loves it. I got the sassy tummy time mirror from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002J4U8M0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  2. I started playing the baby einstein videos off amazon prime. My tv is at a height that she has to really put her head up to watch them from her tummy time station on the floor. I only use them during tummy time and she loves them.

Thats mainly what has worked for us. We have a bunch of props to help, and I roll her over to rest and back on her tummy to work and shes getting better at it but it was really a learning process for all of us.

Do you have toy Beatbo?

u/amuhlou · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

Initially thought you said 7 months old and was a little scared. Re-read and saw it said 7 weeks?! He's still just getting used to being on the outside. Do you show him toys at all? We found that once we started showing little man captain calamari around that age, he really lit up! We'd make the toy 'talk' to him in silly voices. We've found out that our guy is just kind of intense all around, but some babies are just mellow.

Like others have said, rolling over is much farther in the future, as is laughing. Our LO is almost 5 months and only recently started intentionally rolling from back to side... he hates tummy time so he doesn't go all the way over lol.

I'm not sure if this toy would be age appropriate but I thought it was cool. The manufacturer's recommended age is up to 1 year, Amazon recommends it up to 2 years. We got one for our almost 4 month old and she loves it. It attaches just fine to an infant seat but I'm not sure about a convertible.

Our pediatrician's take was that walkers with wheels are dangerous because baby could get into trouble-- falling down stairs, getting into things they shouldn't, that sort of thing.

Technically, exersaucers aren't recommended either, but our ped's advice was that "as long as you're smart about it" and only use it for limited periods of time with full supervision, it can be good exercise. Don't leave baby in it for more than fifteen minutes at a time, but it can be a fine distraction while you're putting away groceries or whatever.

How about an activity table? Those are great for kids who are just starting to move around. You can leave them with the legs off to play with during tummy time, prop them on two legs to play while sitting up, and then they can stand and play when it's fully assembled.

Something that I always buy for 9 months up to 3 years for kids on various occasions is called the Busy Ball Popper by Playskool. It is a very sweet and engaging toy and I have yet to see a child that isn't delighted by it.
Here is a youtube video of the thing in action: Playskool Explore NGrow

We got this set of foam blocks and stuck it together using velcro pieces. It doesn't stay together otherwise. Every once in a while I mix up the configuration to keep it exciting. Sometimes they play on it a lot, and then they forget about it for a bit. If it's ever near something with a surface, they climb up on it and see what mischievous things they can get into on the desk, table, etc.

This is awesome... So many great suggestions. I've already implemented a bunch of them last night and I'm sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner to tell you thank you! I actually got my wife a yoga ball for birthing but she had to be induced a month early and was on magnesium the whole time so out the window went those plans! BUT she did read a few things about using it with the baby... so I'll have to try! I'm a pretty tall guy, but I think I could swing that.

The mental aspect of your post was simply awesome.

>What has helped me to channel my frustration is changing my perspective. The child is new to this world, does not understand anything, is learning and reacts to its environment. But for me, the rationalization that I needed was that.... the child has no understanding of the world around, it does not know anything

Like I was literally in awe of the results. Perspective really is everything! I repeated some phrases over and over to help keep me calm and it really really helped. I've also written down the list here, even though I'm pretty in tune with his needs, just to have some other mental reinforcement of what I need to do. I do NOT need to hurt him, I need to help him. So something about seeing this list while I'm with him kinda reinforces my duties. I'm not sure if that's what you intended but it was helpful.

I don't know if you have used it but he LOVES Beatbo! It's that light up dancing and somewhat obnoxious little alien thing but the lights... he loves the lights. I would highly recommend it to any baby that likes lights. It's great.

The breastmilk on the shirt - does that really work? It sounds genius! I mean he regurges some stuff up ocassionally but I assume that will smell different than the fresh stuff.

Also, I know I've said this a lot, but thank you so much for all of your awesome suggestions and support! I really feel quite undeserving of all of this because I feel a little unwell (I know) right now (ya don't care) (sorry for the poor joke quality). But seriously though, thank you! At 1, you never know what they'll like. Unless it makes an annoying noise. . . . then they are guaranteed to love it. The louder the better. My kid has this and this and loved them both. Make sure you include batteries.

I thought this may help my fellow new parenters out there. If you're anything like me, you scoured the internet checking off every "must-have" baby items list before your LO was born, but I still ended up having Amazon deliver things about every other day for the first couple months.

As a disclaimer, I'm not saying these are MUST HAVE items. I just went through my Amazon purchases and I'm writing down some things that I purchased in those 3 AM wee hour Amazon shopping sprees.

Here's a compilation of everything that I felt I missed in my preparation for my baby girl:

  • An electric nail file. I was terrified to cut her nails myself. This is a safe and easy alternative.
  • A Swaddle UP. This allows her hands to be by her face, which she preferred her first month or two.
  • Friedababy MediFrida. My baby had a rough go of reflux and was diagnosed with Ranitidine pretty quickly. This helped us give her doses with no fuss!

  • Comfy shorts for me. I was unprepared for my post C-Section body and clothing options.

  • Gripe Water / Colic Drops. My reflux baby had some rouuuuugh nights. These helped? Maybe? Witching hour SUCKS.
  • A bigger swaddle that ZIPS. Screw trying to unvelcro my child out of her swaddle quietly at 2 AM.
  • A mirror to help with tummy time. She still hates tummy time. But she does like looking at herself for a while. So I count that as a win.
  • MORE. BOOKS. you don't have enough. I promise. After the 15th time of reading "The Rainbow Fish" you'll appreciate a change of pace. I personally recommend, "The Wonky Donkey."
  • Trial and error pacis. Your kid will have a preference and you'll just have to figure out which. Once you figure it out, buy extras.

  • Bibs / ABSORBENT Burp Cloths. Again... You don't have enough. And the little tiny rags that Gerber tries to sell at Target will not do the trick. Get some THICK in your burp cloth regimen.

    ---

I hope this helps! Let me know if there's anything you would add to the list.

I know this is a super late reply, but we got one of these and my son loves it. We strap his favorite toys on it too.

Have you tried a tummy tub? It means the baby is facing forwards, not backwards and is a bit less traumatic for them as they're not being lowered into water of indeterminate depth.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Original-Tummy-Baby-Bath/dp/B000OROBMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381496711&sr=8-1&keywords=tummy+tub

I'm now using a bath support in a regular bath tub and have found it's all about water temperature, I was absolutely terrified of boiling my baby so always had it too cold, I ended up being gifted a floating rubber ducky with thermometer it in and it's awesome, I was having the water way too cold.
