My recommendation is to start with what I believe to be the most common string type and gauge. Then you change them based on what you want more of. To me, it seems that telling all the options could be confusing. I started on Ernie ball slinkys. In the greenish yellow package. Skinny G-string gauge is .50 with the big E string .105. Roundwounds. A pretty versatile string in my opinion. Also modestly priced. If you get those, but feel that your need is different lets chat on different options. I have gone through countless brands and types so I can give other options based on your preferences. My favorite is is in the link

A few months back I bought a six-set of Thomastik flat wounds for my Schecter Studio-6. It was only when I was about to put them on that I realized the ones I purchased from Amazon were "Long Scale - 34 Inches." My bass has a 35" scale. So, I returned them and got a refund. I was counting on being able to find the same strings just in "Extra Long - 36 Inches." The packaging says they make them in that scale, but I haven't been able to find them anywhere online. My questions are:

  • Can I just re-buy and use the 34" strings on my bass, or would that be a problem with tension?

  • Does anyone know where I can buy the Thomastik 36" flat wound six-set?

  • Is there another six-set of flat wound strings I could buy instead?

You might try using piccolo bass strings, but I can't guarantee that'd have the effect you're looking for.

Still, if you want to experiment with a different sound, piccolo strings can be fun.

Some examples of piccolo bass playing can be found on YouTube.

Amazon is a storefront. They sell stuff that people want to buy. And Sam Ash, Gear Nuts, 8th Street Music, Chicago Music Exchange, The Music Farm are all using Amazon's front end to get to more people. Hell you can buy any Fender direct from shop.Fender.com. No Guitar Center, no local Mom n pop needed. It's not some shadow organization.

I know it says "guitar or amp" but those strings have a Fender Play promotion attached.

String trees are pretty common on all-on-a-side headstocks, to keep tension on the longer strings.

Here you go.

I say just drop tune your 4 string. You don't need to buy another bass for this tuning. I recommend this set of strings for the job: https://www.amazon.com/DAddario-EXL160BT-Strings-Balanced-Tension/dp/B00AQBT3GU

Would recommend buying the 4-set and then the low b as an addon, like one of these.

I play in C Standard so you might want to try a lesser gauge, but I can see these working real well for you

These?

Shoot me a link. Was gonna just chuck some d'addario flats on the j bass but might want to give these a go instead.

I found some. You might want to give this set a try. Also, maybe play with the lowest string gauge since .130 is good for B and you said you're tuning to C.

Going up to a .135 B string is a good idea. D'addario makes a 45-135 set that'll get you a bit more tension on the low B. Combined with the 35" scale, it'll feel closer to the E string on most basses. I had the 6 string version of this set before I changed tunings and I really liked them.

A fresh set would be the best way to judge, and if you want a bright set of short scale strings I might suggest DR hi beams. Short scale will generally be a little thumpier, more fundamental and less brighter harmonic content, also depends on pickups and such but those are some common attributes.

Thanks, I just ordered these. Did you have to do anything else to your bass to get this set-up to work? People talk about filing the nut, among other things.

That's definitely a Kala U-Bass. And if it isn't a Kala, it's at least using polyurethane strings.
