I have two books like this but you have to use your own journal to do the writing.

Room to Write by Bonni Goldberg. This is filled with great writing exercises.

Beat Spirit by Mel Ash. He's got another great one called Shaving the Inside of Your Skull that I've been meaning to get another copy of.

He usually had several notebooks with him at any given time, since he was writing. His many, many notebooks, in various combinations, were usually with him when he travelled. Then he would assemble the writing later, in this case, into the scroll.

FYI -- for those really interested in the critical social reception of Kerouac and his generation of writers, I recommend:

Countering the Counterculture, by Manuel Martinez.

Maybe Word Virus as a sampler or for context? I bought a copy on sale and its quite interesting.

It wasn't my cup of tea either, but I plowed on through to say I read it. It's hard for me to get into "Beat Generation" stuff though I recognize its importance. Anyway, if you're forcing yourself to read about Kerouac I much preferred these two tangentially related books:

And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks

My Darling Killer.

Not fantasy but here's a book Burroughs and Kerouac wrote together about their friend's real-life murder. It was one of the earliest things either of them had written, and they each take a chapter then switch.
