Honestly, putting a bell on my bike has been one of the best things I've ever done. The incredibell is compact, affordable, doesn't take up much space on my handlebars and it's loud.

Now I felt dorky putting this thing on a bike I paid over $1,000 for, but let me tell you why I love it.

You know those annoying path hogging pedestrians? The ones who never seem to hear even the most assertive "ON YOUR LEFT!" And jump out of their skin when you pass? I give this thing a ding started some ways back and a couple more as I approach. Even someone with head phones on can here it. It doesn't sound like a little kid's bell. It's a very nice, clear sound and it's loud.

It's nice when approaching another pack of cyclists to give a warning that someone is getting ready to be cruising by. It's nice to give a quick ding as you pass others going your way to say hello. It's nice to alert others of your presence. It's just a win-win situation.

After having it for a year, I can say I don't find anything goofy about it and have had many other cyclists buy them because of mine.

I've never heard of a bell being stolen.

The best bells--by far, in my opinion--are the basic Crane bells like this. They are very loud and they really say "bike!". Many bells are way too quiet, it's obvious they were tested in quiet places, not NYC.

u/mister-nice-guy · 8 pointsr/NYCbike

Oh, bells definitely work if you have a good one. The Incredibell is pretty decent for the price, but the most effective bell I've come across is the Spurcycle bell. It gets a lot of looks when you ring it, which is exactly what you need it to do.

u/Bofus_QuestionMark · 7 pointsr/bicycletouring

Where I'm living, I've taken to using my timber bell to avoid startling all the animals including not just farm dogs wandering out of their yards but also horses and their riders, coyotes, and mountain lions, especially at blind corners or where it's low visibility. I agree, as other comments described, the farm dogs are more threatening as they are guarding their territory. They're the ones that have been the most aggressive and chased me the most. The other day, on a pretty steep hill climb, as I got close to the top, a dog was waiting for me, just outside an open gate. It looked a bit spooked. Before I got to it, I dismounted, spoke to it like it was my own pet, "that's a good boy," and it stayed relaxed, didn't even stand up, and I walked past it. Seemed okay so I got back on my bike, rode about 15 feet when I was startled by the sounds of it giving chase. I looked back, told it it was okay, slowed down, and it stopped and turned back. I shook my head in exasperation, wiped the poop out of my chamois, and continued on. The self-defense stuff I carry is for the local humans not the dogs.

The one from the gif is cool, but this one has a lot more helmet variety

u/TheStabbyCyclist · 5 pointsr/MTB

Multi-use trails can be a real drag, even without shitty attitudes. Don't let it get you down though.

Anyone that rides multi-use trails, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a Timber Bell. A lot of hikers don't know what the bell is coming from but at least it gets their attention (assuming they aren't wearing headphones). I've had a few people on foot remark about how great the bell is to give warning. The nice thing is that you can disable the bell while you're climbing or on trails that are MTB only.

u/mike_stifle · 4 pointsr/chicago

All of these are spot on. If you don't want to call your pass, at the very least get a bell.

I use this guy here, this thing is super loud!

Maybe mount one of these cans of bear spray to your frame? It comes with the holster. Has good range. No need to fight off a bear with a knife... because... that won't end well.

Also maybe just a continuous bell on your bike? I have this bell with built in silencer and love it. Easy to flick on and off.

I have never ridden any of the bikes you listed, but I'll chime in with a few thoughts:

  • I ride a bike with a chain, and I also have a single speed with a belt (a Trek District). The Trek is my workhorse and daily go-to. In my numerous years owning it, aside from the occasional inner tube replacement and new brakes, it has received zero maintenance (literally). Belts don't need lube, they just work perfectly every single time. I'd advocate for that (but it shouldn't be a deal breaker if something else has many pro's).
  • If you are so inclined, look at a single-speed. 450 feet isn't a huge incline, and the benefit of a single speed is nearly zero maintenance. If you have no gears, no gears will break! Trek has some good options in that arena (though they seem to be moving away from that scene, used ones are out there, as well as some new ones, like this one if you're on the smaller side). Single speed, belt drive, and disk breaks... a commuter's dream bike for a relatively flat commute.
  • Mud/rain guards will be critical if you're going to commute in crap weather sometimes.
  • Disc brakes are nice and will definitely out-perform rim brakes, especially when wet, but they aren't must-haves as modern rim brakes and good pads also perform very well.
  • You will probably never be in the drops during your commute. Drops are great on a road bike and even for 'urban fun' if you have brakes accessible in the drops.
  • Get a killer bell!! Spurcycle makes probably the loudest non-electronic bell I've ever heard. It's very pricey though, but there are some knockoffs out there that are nearly as loud.
  • Make sure you've got good tires. If you're finding the stock tires on your bike aren't giving you the bite you want during all weather conditions your commute can throw at you, replace them! Don't get tires with no treads (like Thickslicks, which are great but ONLY for dry weather); look at reviews and make an informed choice. They may be pricey, but good tires make a difference! I'm currently eyeing some Continental tires for my Trek single speed.
  • Invest in super bright lights that are rechargeable. People should see you from afar, and you want to see the ground in front of you when it's not too light out. There are some great LED lights out there to fit the bill, just look at reviews.

    And about those bikes..

  • The Surly does not seem to give a great bang for the buck. Seems overpriced for the components you're getting. Anyone with more experience should veto my thoughts on this one... but I'd eliminate that from the list.
  • Re: the two Marins, with the Nicasio you pay for creature comforts and practicality (mud gards, those massive cushy tires). With the Presidio, you pay for an absolute gorgeous bike that may need a little more money put in to have the same amenities as the Nicasio (like those mud guards? I'm not sure it comes with those). But both have internal hub, disk brakes, and both can probably accomodate any upgrades a commuter could want.
  • That Onyx is a nice bike, but don't be carried away by the creature-comforts it offers like the integrated lights. They may be convenient, but I would want someone to speaks to their brightness before being sold on something like that. Integrated dull lights < strap-on bright lights. Other than that, it's on par with the other bikes relative to features.

The last three are all great bikes, but my pick would be the Presidio, if I had to pick a geared commuter bike.

All that said... you really should ride a bike before buying. Bikes have different geometry and a different feel when they ride- you may hate what others love.

    Good luck!

Haven't toured on my AWOL yet but it's been my daily commuter for a year now putting in 100 miles a week on it and had very few issues.

Had to replace the wheels, pedals and bottom bracket (plus chain and rear cassette) at first major service as they had worn out.

However first thing I had to do was change tires as I kept getting punctures so went for Armadillo tires at service changed pedals for Wellgo sealed BMX pedals, added SKS mudguards and upgraded wheels to Mavic Crossrides (in the last week have just brought a custom front wheel including the SP Dynamo-hub with Spudnik rim from Spa cycles which I'll use for touring later this year). I've also added Tubus Cargo rear rack, Rockbros bell and finished it off with a nice leather saddle and handle bar tape from Spa cycles.

Have Ortlieb front rollers, Roswheel rear panniers and Altura handle bar bag so I can load it up for touring and have options when commuting.

Finally will add higher range of gears and B+T USB Werk to get the power from my Dynamo hub.

The UK requires all bikes to be sold with bells, no stigma attached to them here... Most are 'ting ting' rather than 'ring ring' - I find the former a little more pleasant. Failing that, how about one of these ;)

And an Airzound horn when a bell isn't loud enough. I started off with just an Airzound, but it scares the shit out of pedestrians and isn't really appropriate if you only want to announce your presence, so I bought this bell for $9 and save my horn for people with headphones, people blocking the path who don't react to the bell, and cars. The bell is very elegant, and most people seem to recognize two quick bell rings as a bicycle approaching. Yelling is still better than risking an accident by silently zooming by a pedestrian or cyclist who has no idea you're coming, but my rides are more pleasant with the bell.

u/cavehobbit · 2 pointsr/bicycling

If you are looking for something to warn cars off with that looks as good as any, I have not tried it, but please do not use it for pedestrians if possible.

For that I have had good luck with an incredibel though that Timber bell on that page looks interesting as well.

The rear light was fairly easy. I just attached a standard flashing red “joggers light” to the back of my helmet with some Velcro as well. Although mine is slightly different, it’s similar to this/

Motorcycle Lights Outdoor Mini Flashing LED Night Running Lamp Walking Motorcycle Riding Safety Warning Light - (Color: Red) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G18L8HJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_w02.BbETN8SK4

I had to experiment a bit with the front light. I wanted something that didn’t stick out too far, and I wasn’t looking for a “light my path headlamp” so much as just something to get people’s attention. What I ultimately settled on was the flat led light from this...

EZGO Extremely Bright LED Lighted Beanie Cap, Unisex Lighted Headlamp Hat, Perfect Hands Free Flashlight for Hunting, Camping, Jogging, Grilling, Handyman Working and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018VLDPLU/ ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_eT2.Bb2NB4854

You just pop the light out of the beanie, and Velcro it to your helmet (although I used a couple packets of Sugru to better orient the light in a more downward direction.)

There was one night though where I needed to OW it along a very dark path for a couple miles, and this headlamp and the OW lights were not by themselves sufficient to light the path to my comfort. So I’ve since added another Velcro strip to the side of my helmet where I can attach a small but powerful flashlight whenever needed that I carry in my backpack (a Fenix PD-35 if you’re curious).

The other thing I recently started doing is using a “finger bell” to signal people along the sidewalk when I’m approaching from behind them. I use it sparingly as I don’t want to be the jerk dinging his bell saying “get out of my way,” but it is helpful to give someone a heads up you’re about to pass them, or warn people around a blind corner, or even just get peoples heads out of their phones long enough to notice you so they don’t step in front of you as you’re about to pass.

I’ve only come close to running into someone twice while on my OW, but either easily could’ve resulted in injuries to us both, so I like having and using the finger bell. Here’s the one I went with:

Save yourself the time, effort and expense of getting multiple shitty bells. Get this bell

u/echs · 1 pointr/MTB

I have this bell on my bike. I almost never encounter any other riders on the trails near me, but I do also ride my bike on paved bike trails when the singletrack is too muddy or damaged, and the bell is useful to let people know I'm passing.

I just do a ding to let them know I'm passing on the left. Walkers, runners, and bikers of all kinds share the paved trails around here and stay to the right anyways (there is a painted line down the center of the path), so it's just a quick way to say "heads up, I'm passing you on your left" without having to actually say it every 2 minutes. The bike trails get a lot of use from everyone.

I use the Trigger Bell. It fits on my left grip and the trigger is right under/next to my thumb when I'm gripping the bar. It fits between my dropper lever and brake lever. And I can ring it safely even on pretty intense descents. It has a good sound.

u/ThatGuyinHouston · 1 pointr/houston

My solution for this: A bell on the handlebars. Yelling at people startles them. A "ding-ding" gets their attention and then as you pass them once they've moved, you tell them, "Thank you."

Remember, the bike paths are also for pedestrians and you're supposed to yield to them. You're also supposed to keep it at 10 MPH or under when approaching and passing people walking.

It's a 2013 Motobecane Gran Premio. Steel frame with Shimano 105 parts on it. There will be some slight white scratches on the left side of the top tube.

Everything you see in the first photo was on the bike except for the camelbak bottles. This includes [a Satechi Bikemate Slim Case] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006N0T674/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), a [Cosmos bike speaker] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WO7ECG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), an Avenir Big Mouth bag, a Mirrycle bell, a Planet Bike Super Flash, and two Topeak black plastic adjustable bottle cages.

Thanks in advance for keeping an eye out!
