I have always coated the outside cover in clear packing tape to prevent this, though I just ordered a leather cover for it that I hope performs the same job in a less hackish-looking way without adding too much bulk.

If the book has a dust cover, you can always fashion a secondary cover to be inserted underneath it and have it 'peak out' on the front board/cover when you open the book. Alternatively, if it doesn't have a dust cover, you can purchase archival dust covers and simply attach the message on the inside flap. Other than that, I'd worry that any adhesive would be potentially damaging should anyone want to remove it in the future. Often times the glue will react with the fibres over extended periods of time and create an almost permanent bond.
