I have a smaller cage than you, but I use Boxo recycled paper bedding. It's decently cheap where I am, 51L for $12 at the pet store. Fairly good at absorbing smells, non-toxic, and my guys love to dig in it.

The only downside I can think of is that scooping poop is a little difficult; it's hard to distinguish brown poop from brown paper bits! (My rats only use their litter box half of the time.. -.-")

When you say "squeaky hammer," I'm immediately reminded of the Lesson of the Guinea Pig Thumbs, an allegorical tale from the long forgotten Sissimee Indian tribe in the Texas lowlands. The Sissimee, of course, occupied only a brief moment in history, as their incredibly lame traditions and dolorous nature made them easy targets for the more fierce Comanche and Apache tribes. Even the Kickapoo kicked the shit out of the Sissimee, no pun intended.

The Lesson of the Guinea Pig Thumb was a great example. Soon after the world (i.e., Texas) was created, on an evening of the full moon Guinea Pig spoke to the Night Sky: "Oh, great Night Sky, If only you would grant me my heart's desire, a hammer, I could break these rocks into [odor-absorbing pellets] (http://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Granule-Blend-Bedding-2-Liter/dp/B000JLPIWU/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1395929282&sr=8-13&keywords=guinea+pig+bedding) which would make my nocturnal emissions so much less noticeable. Hence, I would be more welcome among the other creatures of the world, and perhaps could aspire to King of the Beasts. Please, O Night Sky, grant me a hammer!"

Of course, since Guinea Pig was, after all, a guinea pig, what really came out was, "Squeak squeak squeak squeak hammer squeak squeak hammer." But of course, the Sissimee gods understood any language of the natural world, guinea piggish included. Some even spoke the more ancient language of guinea pig Latin.

Unfortunately for Guinea Pig, his plea was heard not by Night Sky, but by the trickster god, Hahashithead. The trickster god knew quite well that often the worst thing you can do to a person is give him or her exactly what he or she asked for. Hence, Hahashithead descended to the marshy bottomland, appeared before Guinea Pig, and said, "Here's your hammer, sucker."

Hahashithead vanished again even as Guinea Pig squeaked his thanks. Guinea Pig turned eagerly to his rocks, only to find that he couldn't lift the hammer, because guinea pigs lack opposable thumbs.

And that's why on the night of the full moon each month in Texas, of one listens (extremely carefully) one can hear Guinea Pig howling squeaking his eternal rage.

I swear to puppies I'm going to throw a psychotic fit!

I agree with you - I recognize the bedding though, it's Kaytee soft granule bedding. I've used the stuff, and it works very well!

I've changed her bedding since this gif, but back then I think it was Kaytee soft granule bedding.

I have 1 bun and he will only use 1 litter box. I layer a granule blend and paper bedding mixture in a "scatterless" litter box that has a soft wire floor panel. I change once every other day.

I buy from wherever has them cheapest or on sale but for reference:

Such adorable little boys!

qweers has already given a bunch of great ideas.

  1. Odds are they'll spend most of their time cuddling. Sometimes they prefer sleeping alone. I second qweers' advice on at least one sleepy area per rat.

  2. I only have one hoarder but the others keep him in check. I keep the bowls full at all times. My bowls aren't very big and between four rats, they go through the food pretty quick. Here's one site's recommendation for feeding.

  3. Different cages work differently with fleece. For my Critter Nation, I make mats that just rest on the bottom tray and the shelves. The mats are made of fleece over Uhaul furniture padding. They're pretty bulky and, for the most part, stay in place on their own. There are different methods for keeping them in place for different types of cages.

  4. Yeah, let them get settled a bit but that shouldn't stop you from getting to know them.

  5. I don't let my boys run around loose. The bed works for most people (my bed is too low, they jump off). I made a 4' x 5' playpen out of acrylic from work. You could also use cardboard clipped or taped together. I like having one large enough to sit in with them.

  6. If you can get your rat sitter to play with them daily, that would be amazing for them. Letting them out at least a couple times over the duration of the 5 days would probably be the minimum requirement.

  7. I have a feeling you'll know when they need to be tossed.

  8. Dig boxes are fun for them! You can even sprinkle treats, seeds, nuts, etc in the box so they have to forage through the bedding to find treats. Were you thinking aspen? Whatever goes in the box will probably get pushed out and might end up on your floors. I've heard from some people who used to use aspen shavings but switched to fleece because they got sick of picking wood shavings from their socks. You could also use sterilized rocks or pebbles in a dig box. You could use fleece scraps or paper crinkles.

I am not an expert, but I've definitely read that air freshener is not the greatest thing for them. I absolutely get wanting to control the smell, though -- here are things I've tried:

  1. Corn cob bedding (like this). Supposedly it interacts with the ammonia in their urine to neutralize some of the smell. I found that it just smelled weirder, not less, but you could give it a try.
  2. Clean more frequently, and especially rinse out the wheel(s) daily. Deep cleaning the cage every day is totally unrealistic, but I found that mine tend to pee a lot while they're running (I guess?), and then the pee would dry on the wheel and smell a lot (because there was nothing to absorb it, it was just exposed to the open air). Giving the wheel a quick rinse with warm soap and water every day helped cut down a bit of the smell.
  3. An air purifier. I have a smallish one pointed at the cage (so that's sucking air from the cage, that is). It's not technically rated for odor reduction (apparently you need some kind of fancy carbon filter for that). It might be placebo effect, but I feel like it helps. If you can afford a really good air purifier, I think that would be the best solution -- good for the mice and good for your nose :)

No worries, I'm just happy to help! I'm sure you could get it in the US, if you Google hemp reptile substrate! I bet amazon will have it out there, too! Amazon has everything 😂

Edit: I know this one is quite expensive, but I wonder if this is any help? I think they do various sizes!
