Why do people rape?

• (70-78% of all rapes) socially delayed persons seeking intimacy (not physical sexual pleasure). These rapists do not want to identify as a rapist. They usually ambush a victim, drug a victim, or otherwise incapacitate a victim. The “set-up” is premeditated and planned over a period of 3-6 months, as is the “exit.” These rapists usually have a conversation with the victim, asking if the victim is enjoying the act, apologizing, reassuring that they are not looking to hurt the victim. Child molesters fall within this category, using a family’s trust and the child’s inexperience and naïveté to both avoid detection, preserve some illusion of consensual intimacy, and feel as if they are not harming their victim.
  
  
• people who feel powerless displacing their negative emotions onto weak and vulnerable victims by intentionally sexually violating the victim in order to feel powerful and make the victim feel powerless. Less common, but not exactly uncommon either. These rapists are out for vindication. These rapes are less premeditated, usually with a mere hours or at most a week of planning. The exit is not thoroughly planned, usually resulting in physical harm towards the victim (assault or death). The rapist is looking to exert his power over someone weak and powerless. These rapes usually do not involve a weapon or drugs. Physical force is used to force the victim into submission, often in excess of what is necessary. The rapists looks for symbolic sexual acts that represent power over the victim (e.g., anal).
  
  
• (less than 1% of all rapes) sadists who derive pleasure from the victim’s pain, suffering, and psychological destruction. These rapes have the highest likelihood of resulting in death. Sadists look for egotistical, confident, self-assured and proud victims. The taller the victim, the harder she will fall, the sweeter the sadistic reward. Sadistic rapes share many commonalities with torture first degree murder, and may last for hours or days. Sadistic rapists are the most likely to become serial rapists. Rapists want to see their victims psychologically broken and feeling dehumanized. Victims are usually starved, dehydrated, and present physical trauma. Bodies are discarded symbolically in areas where one would discard garbage or objects of insignificant value.
  
  Most rapes are carried out without a weapon. The most common weapon used, when a weapon is involved, is a knife. Firearms are rarely used in the commission of a rape.
  
  Those are the FBI’s three archetypes for criminal profiles for sex criminals.

The police are not uniform filters on society, trying to arrest a representative sample of drug users. "Drug users" generally are not the primary concern of the police, who have more important laws to enforce and problems to deal with. (This is from memory, forgive me if a mess up some terminology)

There are Three fundamental problems. Two are psychometric and one is conceptual.

Personality is dimensional. We aren't extroverted or not, we have a level of extroversion varying from low (maybe zero) to high (as in we won't shut the fuck up). The M-B dichotomizes it. It turns the continuum into a binary statement. This cuts out the variability that is required for measuring the variable. The majority of these statistics are based on correlation. Correlation is standardized covariance. Without variance, there's no convariance. If it doesn't vary we can't work out the correlations. This tanks it's test-retest for anyone who isn't at the extreme end of one of the dimensions. This is part of why it is fundamentally unreliable.

Secondly, many of the dimension are bipolar (the continuum is measuring two things, rather than one, as in manic to depressed). Most of the statistics used in psychology assume that you are measuring something that is unipolar. That is, it runs on a continuum from low to high (say from 0-100).

The M-B puts multiple constructs within the same continuum. For example introversion - extroversion. Other personality measures that work (like the NEO-3, or the IPIP) suggest that introversion and extroversion are not the presence or absence of the same thing, but that they are two different constructs. Conceptually, the M-B continuums don't make sense. Are thinking and feeling the opposite of each other? High functioning people tend to do both well, low function people tend to do neither well.

Because the scales in the M-B is running from high to low to high again in something else in this bipolar fashion (think of it as 100 to 0 to 100), they violates the assumptions of most of the statistical tests that would would use to calculate it's basic properties or use it to make judgments about people.

More disconcertingly, it's based on Jungian theory which is more batshit crazy and obsolete that Freud. I can't make that argument as well, because no one bothered to teach me Jung, because noone bothers to teach Jung anymore, for the same reasons we don't teach phrenology. Freud tends to get taught from a historical perspective.

Lilienfeld does at great summary of the research in Psychological Science in the Courtroom. He argues that the four factor version probably meets the Daubert standard, but the 16 factor version does not. I would argue that I really wouldn't want to have to argue making a decision based on it in court.

But John Douglas, Robert Ressler, and Ann Burgess DID kinda write the book on this subject.

Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives


It presents the findings from their years studying, and interviewing convicted murderers. It’s full of statistics and tables of data. Some of the material is kinda dry, it’s difficult to make statistical analysis of questionnaires into a page turner. But, it does show how they began to be able to ‘profile’ an unsub. They put in a lot of work into studying crime scene and circumstance of the crime and correlating the background the actual criminal that CREATED that crime scene.

It reads like a college textbook. It’s worth a look.

My reading recommendations include, mainly, a lot of textbooks! Unlike a lot of the true crime novels, I've found that criminal psychology, criminology, victimology, forensics and other academic textbooks and research journals are generally far less sensationalistic than the true crime novels tend to be. here are some of the ones that I highly recommend.

Serial Murderers and Their Victims by Eric W Hinkley is a fantastic resource for the latest studies concerning serial murder, focusing on both the perpetrators and their victims. Now in its seventh iteration, this text has some of the most up to date statistics on serial killers in the US and worldwide.

Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters by Peter Vronsky is another similarly great book full of real life case studies of serial and spree killers and delves into the motives behind such aberrant behavior.

The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Michael Newton has entries on hundreds of convicted serial killers.

The Serial Killer Files: The Who, What, Where, How, and Why of the World's Most Terrifying Murderers by Harold Schechter undoubtedly possesses a sensational bent, but I can't deny that the book is certainly thrilling to read in a morbid way, and I think any fan of true crime will like it very much.

Female Serial Killers: How and Why Women Become Monsters by Peter Vronsky explores the rare phenomenon of female serial killers.

Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives by Ressler, Burgess and Douglas is an important and easily-read psychological textbook on the sexual impulses that lead to violence.

Sexual Murder: Catathymic and Compulsive Homicides by Louis B Schlesinger is a similar book by a prominent forensic psychologist.

Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives, Second Edition: Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations by Vernon J Geberth is a manual for law enforcement professionals investigating sexually-motivated homicides by a renowned former-detective. The images and case studies are directly from the author's archive of case files. I will warn readers that some of the content in this book is highly disturbing, even for I, a person with an interest in the psychology of serial killers. All in all, a fascinating book for those who can stomach it.

Rather than downvote you, I'll just point you toward a book that is likely going to answer your questions better than most here.

For homicide rates, you can obviously look at FBI crime statistics table 43.


For the correlation of whether or not blacks commit more crime than whites, you can look at Ellis, Beaver and Wright (2009) where they looked at whether or not blacks commit more crime than whites in 113 studies. Turned out they did in all 113.


For how well it correlates with violent crime, you can look at the New Century Foundation’s report “The Color of Crime”. They analyzed the violent crime rates of 50 U.S. states and D.C for the year 2005. The analysis found that state violent crime rates correlated at .81 with the percentage of the population that was Black or Hispanic, .37 with the state’s percentage of high-school drop outs, .36 with the states poverty rate, and .35 with the state’s unemployment rate.


The only thing that I miss is the gun ownership and murder correlation. I can't seem to find that anymore.

The first place to look would be Law and Human Behavior, which is the official journal of AP-LS. Others include Psychology, Crime & Law (EAPL's journal) and Psychology, Public Policy, and Law (an APA journal). Also, JARMAC, a relatively new journal, has had a decent amount of Psych/Law content recently as well.

As far as what to read, it really depends on what topic you're interested in. Your best bet might be to first pick up a Psych/Law textbook to get an overview of what's out there. There are a few good ones, but I'm partial to this one.

I want my eventual career to be in forensic psychology so this is pretty embarrassing.

I think you should definitely buy one of those forensic psychology books. I picked this one. I think being a forensic psychologist is amazing and takes an extremely strong/talented individual. I really was looking into it but I realized I didn't want to pursue higher education after a Bachelors.

You didn't ask for you that, you asked for any evidence that race had a correlation that SES and other factors didn't. I don't have to prove to you that race is solely responsible for crime, that would be goofy, and I don't think anyone believes it. I believe I just have to prove that race is a factor. If I radically misread what you wrote, please let me know.

Again, the race link had a higher correlation than SES, I didn't write or manipulate the papers.

I have a book that shows exactly that. I think it would be unfair to force you to buy it though, so I'll see if I can find some of the studies it contains online. Information from Japan shows that the highest crime and offence rate is held by Africans.

In England, government data shows that Blacks make up around 14% of criminals even though Blacks only account for around 3.5% of their population.

What exactly are you looking for? Are you saying that you are looking for I.Q. tests that still have a racial gap after SES has been taken into account?

I read those when I began my journey down the CID rabbit hole. I also read 100 Deadly Skills, which was not directly related, but fun to keep in the back of the head.

Very interesting comments. Talking to someone with first hand observations is so much more enlightening than someone who has merely read about this from a textbook.

There are a few pieces of your reply that I wanted to respond to. One was where you mentioned "wallowing in humility and self-loathing" (aka "Zero State" Thinking) and the other was "after a few years in prison learning about what lead to the life choices..."

Both of those statements I agree with...and I agree with them even more strongly when considered together. If all a person does is sit in prison and express remorse, they will emerge with a well practiced and highly polished way of expressing remorse...but not necessarily changed thinking. On the other hand, someone who actually focuses on the choices that lead them to commit their crime will have spent...or you could say "invested" their time in preventing the main cause of recidivism (committing crime). Asking which is "most important" is somewhat like asking which wheel of a bicycle is most important. They both are, but education is a mass application solution. Curriculum can be designed and delivered with group testing to confirm absorption. But changed thinking is much harder to gauge because it requires closer individual assessment due to the fact that the participants have the "inertia" of their patterned thinking fighting against change....and hence are more inclined to say what they think their instructors wish to hear as this allows recognition of achievement without exerting the difficult effort of actual change. This is another of Samenow's thinking errors called "Failure to Endure Adversity."

Alright so sci-hub is back and I decided to address Color of Crime in a blogpost here sometime - its irrelevant to the discussion though so I won't bother. Except for one thing.

In the article, a simple correlation coefficient - by the way, I'd like to emphasize that no information was given on how it was calculated, whether it was via a regression analysis or otherwise. There's no information on statistical significance of the results, nothing. But anyway, this isn't even the proper way to calculate these things in criminology - specifically, correlation analyses don't allow us to predict relationships, making this point worthless. The better thing to do would be to do a multivariate regression and see if the % black indicator would be, say, an amalgamation of all the given results. Either way, this is a questionable analysis given it's obviously biased source.

Next is an attempted point about population density lacking significance as a predictor - the problem is, the source cited is the Handbook of Crime Correlates (which, might I add, is made by Lee Ellis - a known person attempting to say black folk have higher testosterone, ergo crime, and Kevin MacDonald, one of those 'sociobiologist' types, and a John Wright, who I don't know much about). This is a very, very terrible source to cite - for one, the paragraph he links is little more than a gish gallop of sources which they make claims of in regards to population density. It's implied to be an overview of the literature, but there's little information on how they surveyed the literature, or whether the studies that came to a certain conclusion were better or worse. If you don't believe me, here's the book - head to page 53 to view it, and page 59 for a discussion of the tables. I'm not going to bother overviewing this due to that - it'd take far too long and, quite frankly, isn't worth it. Not to mention how the studies are only from the 80s and 70s largely, which, for a book released in 2009, is laughably evident of cherry picking.

Instead, I'll link this study - which they never included - which pointed out significant caveats - such that the relationship ultimately depended on how crime functioned given its relation to the population, as well as how the FBI ultimately led to crime calculations being in jurisdictions with nonexistent data. While I disagree with the study due to the UCR's usage, as shown before, this was never cited, nor are these caveats mentioned in the review, showing its inadequacy for any sort of academic usage.

The next point is that some studies found controlling for certain variables had a weaker effect on black crime than white crime. Ironically, this would be evidence against a genetic explanation, since it strongly suggests an environmental confounding variable, as we would expect the genetic explanation to have an equivalent environmental depressant (but with there still being a large gap after adjustment). Let's evaluate the studies anyway.

The first study uses the questionable Uniform Crime Reports. But anyway, ignoring this, the point is misleading since this was only for structural disadvantage, rather than for population size and structure. Further, only residential instability and younger male population had significant differences between populations. However, admittedly, in Chicago the significance differences did change, with 'spatial lag (dealing with geography),' % Hispanic, entropy, and structural disadvantage being significant predictors.

The second also uses the questionable Uniform Crime Reports - it, hilariously in spite of this, found no effect of percent black on violent crime arrests rates, although one on offense rates, which would pretty strongly go against any genetic hypothesis they could pull out of their asses. Of course, the results do support what he says.

The next complaint is 'three cherry-picked cities,' which is a pretty ignorant way to dismiss them since they contain thousands of individuals, and likewise one would have to try to explain the low black crime rate. Ironically, viewing the cities listed in the original article's Wikipedia pages, it can be seen that they do have ties to anti-slavery movements and such in the past, although there isn't enough on them to gauge whether selection bias could result in this. It may be the case, although evidence would have to be provided for this. I'd also like to use this opportunity to point out that Bermuda, in spite of being relatively evenly split between black and white folk, has less than a thousand crimes in 2016 with the trend being for them to decrease. There is also exceedingly few people in prison there, suggesting minimal conviction (see here and here for concerns of racism in Bermuda), and with the Bermudan government pointing out that there's minimal recidivism there. Not sure exactly how this can be explained at all by selection bias.

Why do people rape?

• (70-78% of all rapes) socially delayed persons seeking intimacy (not physical sexual pleasure). These rapists do not want to identify as a rapist. They usually ambush a victim, drug a victim, or otherwise incapacitate a victim. The “set-up” is premeditated and planned over a period of 3-6 months, as is the “exit.” These rapists usually have a conversation with the victim, asking if the victim is enjoying the act, apologizing, reassuring that they are not looking to hurt the victim. Child molesters fall within this category, using a family’s trust and the child’s inexperience and naïveté to both avoid detection, preserve some illusion of consensual intimacy, and feel as if they are not harming their victim.
  
  
• people who feel powerless displacing their negative emotions onto weak and vulnerable victims by intentionally sexually violating the victim in order to feel powerful and make the victim feel powerless. Less common, but not exactly uncommon either. These rapists are out for vindication. These rapes are less premeditated, usually with a mere hours or at most a week of planning. The exit is not thoroughly planned, usually resulting in physical harm towards the victim (assault or death). The rapist is looking to exert his power over someone weak and powerless. These rapes usually do not involve a weapon or drugs. Physical force is used to force the victim into submission, often in excess of what is necessary. The rapists looks for symbolic sexual acts that represent power over the victim (e.g., anal).
  
  
• (less than 1% of all rapes) sadists who derive pleasure from the victim’s pain, suffering, and psychological destruction. These rapes have the highest likelihood of resulting in death. Sadists look for egotistical, confident, self-assured and proud victims. The taller the victim, the harder she will fall, the sweeter the sadistic reward. Sadistic rapes share many commonalities with torture first degree murder, and may last for hours or days. Sadistic rapists are the most likely to become serial rapists. Rapists want to see their victims psychologically broken and feeling dehumanized. Victims are usually starved, dehydrated, and present physical trauma. Bodies are discarded symbolically in areas where one would discard garbage or objects of insignificant value.
  
  Most rapes are carried out without a weapon. The most common weapon used, when a weapon is involved, is a knife. Firearms are rarely used in the commission of a rape.
  
  Those are the FBI’s three archetypes for criminal profiles for sex criminals.

This book is amazing, though a bit dense. I'd recommend anything by John Douglas, the original psychological profiler, but this book is all about the studies of and interviews with the killers. Basically all you'd ever want to know about the topic.

However, the fact is that, investigatively speaking, complaints about voyeurism must be treated as very serious offenses.
