I work at a kid's bookstore and get this question all the time! Here are some of my favorite recommendations:

The Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones, and some of her other books too, like Howl's Moving Castle would be fantastic. She writes great fantasy.

The Emerald Atlas series is great for adventure.

Shannon Hale writes wonderful fairy tale type books. Start her off with Princess Academy or Goose Girl.

Jessica Day George is also a favorite at our store. Tuesdays at the Castle or Dragon Slippers would be great starts to new series.

Kate DiCamillo is wonderful. Her newest book Flora & Ulysses was awesome.

I loved Savvy and Scumble by Ingrid Law. If she likes those she could also try A Tangle of Knots and A Snicker of Magic. Not all one series, but similar ideas.

And lastly maybe something by Brandon Mull? He writes really fun fantasy adventure stories.

For those of us with Children and kindles/nooks, this Boxcar Children set is on sale for $3.99. It's the first 12 books!

Other great YA titles that deal with issues of faith and doubt where religion is concerned. As an author, I'll try to keep my editorializing to a minimum, but these titles should definitely be included in this discussion.

Godless by Pete Hautman
Winner of the NBA for Young People's Lit in 2004, Hautman's protagonist wrestles with his doubts about his Catholic faith, eventually deciding to found his own religion with some friends over the summer. Great exploration of faith and the struggle to believe past your doubts.

[I'll Be There] (http://www.amazon.com/Ill-There-Holly-Goldberg-Sloan/dp/B009F7M5XY) by Holly Goldberg Sloan
Very positive and often hilarious portrayal of church-going family actually implementing social justice and selfless love without being preachy or heavy-handed.

[What We Lost] (http://www.amazon.com/What-We-Lost-ebook/dp/B00ADVLPNW) by Sara Zarr
Originally published as ONCE WAS LOST, Little, Brown has reissued this book, interestingly with a less blatantly religious title. (The original is a lyric from "Amazing Grace.") It follows a pastor's daughter whose Mom has been sent to rehab. It's an incredibly tender story with a dynamite first-person protagonist. Some of Zarr's best work.

COMING APRIL 2014:
[This Side of Salvation] (http://www.amazon.com/This-Side-of-Salvation-ebook/dp/B00DA98ZUA) by Jeri Smith-Ready
When David's brother dies, his parents find solace in a religious community counting down the days until believers are whisked away (called "The Rush" in this book, not the Rapture, interesting...). A book about how we deal with grief and the search for salvation.

I think the theme you're thinking of is "Against the Elements." On that note...

Mountaineering

The [Everest Trilogy]() by Gordon Korman tells the story of a group of five teenagers who won a contest with the ultimate prize--scaling Mt. Everest. Two of the five have the chance to be the youngest scaler of Everest of all time. One of the five doesn't make it home.

Wildfire

Caroline B. Cooney's Flash Fire will raise your pulse and break your heart. The denizens of a gated community try desperately to flee a rapidly moving wildfire as it travels down the mountainside, towards their homes, burning everything in its path.

Earthquake

The aptly-named Earthquake Terror follows siblings Jonathan and Abby as they're alone on a camping trip, after their father took their mother to the hospital, after she broke her ankle. Then an earthquake hits. Not just any earthquake--the Loma Prieta quake of '89. Jonathan must keep himself and his sister alive, and safe, as they're stranded. And then the island begins to sink.

Quake is set during the Loma Prieta earthquakes as well, and I actually find it superior to the more well-known Earthquake Terror. Home alone, babysitting her bratty brother Sidney and struggling to reconnect with her old friend Jennie, Franny finds herself forced to make many more adult decisions than she ever wanted to imagine.

Escaping the Giant Wave, also by Peg Kehret, the author of Earthquake Terror, features Kyle and BeeBee vacationing on the Oregon coast. Then, an earthquake hits, followed immediately by a broken gas line catching their hotel on fire. And then, the tsunami alarms sound...

Plane Crash

Caroline B. Cooney's Flight# 116 Is Down is similar to Flash Fire, jumping across many characters in the hours surrounding a plane crash in the Connecticut woods. Harrowing and heart-pounding.

> 2.Next legends to get down price should be jiho and aiolos right ? Any idea when ?

No telling on who. There's not really enough legends to have a 'pattern' and even where patterns can be inferred, BB doesn't really stick to them.

The "oldest" of the new legends are Felix and Jiho. Thus, one assumption could be that they're the ones that will be replaced next.

However, last anniversary-ish was Felix and Jiho. They may want to focus on other elements for this anniversary-ish, so Felix and Jiho may be skipped. Who then?

I would guess that Aiolos will be the next (or one of the next) legends to move to classic with a replacement added in. No, this isn't "ww bias" prejudice, but logic^(1).

  1. Felix and Jiho got attention last anniversary-ish with their release. Show the love to other elements this anniversary-ish.
  2. Jibril and Presty were the most recent legend EEs. Show the love to other elements instead of doubling up on a color that just received legendary attention.
  3. The one in the middle is a green WW kangaroo.

    ----
^(1: Of course, "logic" and "BB" don't seem to walk hand-in-hand very often.)

The Phantom Tollbooth

u/nijoli · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

The Phantom Tollbooth is a favorite of mine.

I had a book sale today for the rescue kennel (and man, am I tired tonight) and the Spiderwick books and the 39 Clues books were the most popular books for young kids. I don't know much about these, except that kids really wanted them. We sold out of both and had a crate full!

Both are availble on Kindle:

39 Clues

Spiderwick
