Hopefully you started freshman year, there is only really 6 semesters and 2 summers on your transcript for high school.

Might be overkill, but I had 2200+ SAT, comparable ACT, 3.8/4.2 GPA, dozen+ APs, lots of good extracurriculars (STEM and others), sports, summer jobs, etc. I would say the biggest thing I lacked was independent projects (not just programming) showcasing my interest, but everything worked out I guess.

I would say this: try to max out your schedule in terms of difficulty (for what you're allowed/meant to take), join relevant clubs and try to get notable achievements in them in what time you have, and perhaps do some CS stuff that you can showcase on your own (app to track sleeping habits, voting website for school elections, etc etc).

If you're looking for reading material, try this, I enjoyed it quite a bit when I read it in high school.

This book is so great! I even feel like a celebrity because my review is featured on the back cover. :) I can't believe she's giving this amazing resource away to all of you for free. If you want a physical copy or Kindle version, here's a link since Mom is too shy to promote it herself.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SKLM2FZ

(That's not affiliate and I don't have anything to gain from this other than helping a friend). Also guys, if you read the free pdf and like it, go to that link and give her a positive review.

No encuentro un documento en donde tenia bastantes universidades que ofrecian becas, entonces me estoy intentando recordar out of the top of my head.

  • University of Miami: Isaac Bashevis Singer Scholarship - Full Tuition. (Academic Merit, en otras palabras, tienes que tener muy buenas notas. Solo para freshmen)

  • University of Miami: The University of Miami President's Scholarshi - $8,000-$30,000 (Academic Merit)

  • University of Tulsa: International Scholarship for Academic Excellence and Outstanding Leadership: Especificamente para estudiantes internacionales, no necesitas las mejores notas, pagan por full tuition.

Yes, I got into my school with less.

Just make sure the schools you pick to apply to fit your own criteria. There's a lot of resources that publish lists yearly and as I remember most school profiles will post their GPA range and how many of their accepted students fall into which range.

Example: Fiske Guide to Colleges 2011

Also, be sure that you stay on top of your application process, essays, applications, especially scholarship applications are very time sensitive and may require paperwork prepared early.

Lastly, visit as many schools as possible with your dad and keep him involved in the process, may help him see your options more realistically.

Good Luck!

It seems sketchy. I also haven't read it, but the reviews look totally fake. Pass.

I'd recommend Janine Robinson's books if you're looking at college essay books; they seem pretty legit. Here's a link to her "Heavenly Essays" book.

/u/tuckermalc and /u/pizzzahero both have great comments. I'll add a bit. Go to /r/stoicism, read [William Irvine's book] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0195374614?keywords=william%20irvine&qid=1456992251&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1), then read [Epictetus's Enchiridion] (http://www.amazon.com/Enchiridion-Dover-Thrift-Editions-Epictetus/dp/0486433595/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456992275&sr=8-1&keywords=enchiridion). follow their guidelines. Also check out /r/theXeffect. The most important thing is controlling your habits. If you're in the habit of eating healthy, getting enough sleep, going to the gym, etc. then you're set.

Now for stuff that's harder to do. Go see a therapist. Or a psychiatrist. Try to find a [therapist who can do EMDR] (http://www.emdr.com/find-a-clinician/) with you, it's a very effective technique (I saw a clinician who uses EMDR for two years, and it changed my life-- and, importantly, it's supported by strong scientific evidence, it's not quackery stuff like homeopathy or acupuncture). If you decide to go to a psychiatrist, tell them you don't want SSRIs. Look at other drugs: Wellbutrin, tricyclics, SNRIs, etc (check out selegiline in patch form, called EMSAM, as well). Seriously, go see a professional and talk to them. I have no doubt that you're wrestling with mental illness. I have been there. For me, it just felt normal. I didn't understand that other people didn't feel like I did...so it took me a long time to go get help. But it's so important to just start working through these things and getting support. That's really the most important thing you can do. It will make your life so much better. If you aren't able to get to a therapist, do Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on yourself! [This is a brilliant program] (https://moodgym.anu.edu.au) that's widely respected. Do it over and over. Also read [Feeling Good by David Burns] (http://www.amazon.com/Feeling-Good-New-Mood-Therapy/dp/0380810336/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456992639&sr=8-1&keywords=feeling+good+david+burns). It's a book on CBT, and can help you get started. There are lots of other resources out there, but you have to begin by realizing that something is wrong.

Finally, I'll talk about college. Don't try to go to fricking Harvard or MIT. You won't get in, and those aren't even the right schools for you. There are many excellent schools out there that aren't the super super famous Ivies. Look at reputable state schools, like UMich, UMinnesota, the UC system, etc. get ["Colleges that Change Lives"] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143122304?keywords=colleges%20that%20change%20lives&qid=1456992746&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1), the [Fiske Guide to Colleges] (http://www.amazon.com/Fiske-Guide-Colleges-2016-Edward/dp/1402260660/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456992768&sr=8-1&keywords=fiske+guide), and [Debt-Free U] (http://www.amazon.com/Debt-Free-Outstanding-Education-Scholarships-Mooching/dp/1591842980/ref=pd_sim_14_15?ie=UTF8&dpID=515MwKBIpzL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR104%2C160_&refRID=1VC3C23RJP6ZMXGG5QBA). One thing I realized after college was that I would've been happy at any of the school I looked at. People are fed such a line of BS about school, like you have to go to the top Ivies or something. No way. Find a good place at which you can function, learn as much as possible, and have a good social life. Like another person said, also look at going to a community college for a year and then transferring-- my relative did this and ended up at Harvard for grad school in the end.

There are two traditional resources: Fiske Guide and Peterson's. You usually find these in most counseling centers or college admissions offices. You can find them at any local library as well. But nothing beats a college campus visit and tour to see if you like the feel of a place. Good luck!

I used this prep book, I thought it was phenomenal myself. I caught one error in the whole book, and all the questions were exactly like the ACT

Did the whole book in 2 weeks at the end of one summer break just before school and then aced the September ACT, never looked back. Very thankful for this book

For the 26 I didn’t study more than a week out for any of them, but for this last one I signed up for a prep class and started studying about a month and a half before the test. Every Saturday I’d take a practice test from the ACT prep book then go over what I’d missed the following Monday and Tuesday and try to figure out what I did wrong and I’d rework all the math problems. I also used the 5 lb. ACT practice book to get extra practice on the types of problems I was struggling with.

Here's an example http://www.amazon.com/Cracking-Practice-Edition-College-Preparation/dp/0804124655

The key was understand how they asked a question and use the answers as clues. Words like always and never almost guaranteed the answer was not something. It really did become simple once you stopped thinking about the answer and more about the test itself.

I teach at RIT, and I wrote a book to help. It's called Carpe College, and the kindle e-book version is FREE until TOMORROW (Tuesday, 12/2 @ midnight CST). If you know any HS seniors, college freshmen, or their parents, maybe they'll find this of value. Here's the link, or go to CarpeCollege.com. Hope this helps in some way! http://www.amazon.com/Carpe-College-Seize-Whole-Experience-ebook/dp/B00PPMNNMK/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=8-1&qid=1385959133

I like the way you think. I've been noticing myself that spending hours studying and testing on a screen often leaves me with a headache. On top of that, you're just clicks away from any distractions being online.

I definitely admire the old-fashioned by the books approach. After taking another redditor's recommendation, I ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/Book-Practice-Problems-Manhattan-Prep/dp/194123450X

I should be getting it soon (hopefully today or tomorrow). Let me know what you think of it.

I have like 12 days before the test. Wish me luck.

Hello! My needful things pretty much make my list, and they're mostly nutrition supplements and this GMAT study guide. I am mainly focusing on my diet and training, and I really need to conquer this GMAT for grad school. Thank you for the contest!

I took a sip of something poison, but I'll hold on tight.

Depending on the kind of career you want to have, this would be an all-around good place to start.

Grab this book!

https://www.amazon.com/50-Successful-Harvard-Application-Essays/dp/1250127556/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

It's full of quirky, unorthodox essays (e.g. one girl wrote her essay about a banana... I did you not). Obviously don't copy anything, but you can get some ideas :)

As an n=1, I used this book when I was writing my essays and got into 4 Ivies/Ivy-level schools with average grades :)

u/honestlytbh · 1 pointr/ApplyingToCollege

I go to an Ivy that isn't HYP or Cornell. That's about as much as I'm willing to reveal.

There's so many ways you could approach the essays. Don't be trite. Stand out, but don't force it. I think too many students try too hard to be special, and the writing just comes off as cringey as a result. There's a book called 50 Successful Harvard Application Essays that I found pretty helpful.
