Well the obvious recommendation for this is 350mL of Pilot blue/black. Should last a lifetime! Other than that, it would be worth checking out the various blue/blacks offered by Diamine, Pilot/Iroshizuku, Lamy, Monteverde, Pelikan, and Robert Oster.

Oh man, buying someone who is into fountain pens a fountain pen without knowing anything about what the person likes is a Herculean task.

You may be better off buying some fountain pen ink and notebooks. Maybe look for some special edition inks like Montblanc The Beatles Psychadelic Purple and a couple nicer notebooks.

Or a nice case - I have never had too many cases.

If you’re bent on getting him a pen, search eBay for a restored Sheaffer snorkel. You can probably get something for about $100 with a gold nib and, if the boss doesn’t have any they will think it is cool - and if they do have one, they’re probably already addicted.

I got a beautiful black Sheaffer Saratoga for $80 with a matching pencil. Not a white dot, but in beautiful condition.

u/JonSzanto · 10 pointsr/fountainpens

I most certainly do, especially if you have any friends who like fps and ink: Pilot Blue/Black in the 'coke bottle'. You can get this for around $22.00 for 350ml (you read that right) and that is for a remarkably good ink that is even fairly waterproof. If you split the bottle with friends, you can end up with the absolute best ink value on the planet. I got into this ink because pen restoration people I know use it, and they use a lot of ink and it can't be a problem ink. Give it a look.

I also bought this.

Pilot makes an ink under the Iroshizuku brand that has a fantastic magenta called Yama-Budo. It and other Iroshizuku inks are available at Amazon for very good prices. If I were to start over I would only buy Iroshizuku inks, they are that good and very well respected by the fountain pen community.

This Amazon seller has 3 left as of my posting (after me buying one of course).

u/ThereKanBOnly1 · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

I think the largest bottles of ink I've seen are the 1L Pelikan Brilliant Black/Royal Blue bottles. It comes out about 6.5 cents a mL, which is pretty darn cheap in my book, while still getting high quality ink.

u/icecreambones · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

Pilot Blue Black comes in bottles.

u/bentonite · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

Pilot Blue-Black is cheap as dirt (350 mL for $25), waterproof, professional, and really well behaved. It also shades surprisingly well on Rhodia and Tomoe River paper (maybe a 6.5/10 on shading which is a bit unusual for such a standard color).

(I've recently rediscovered this ink after spilling some water on a page I'd written and seeing just a hint of desaturation instead of the complete washing away of everything. Instant convert/made me love the ink again).

u/eleventy_six · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

If you want a giant bottle of good, cheap ink for your students, the "coke bottle" of Pilot Blue-Black is a good choice.

u/KiltedMan · 6 pointsr/fountainpens

Look, you don't need to go down the rabbit hole and as much of a pilot fanboy as I am (Fal-con, Fal-con UUUUUUUBER ALLLLLLLES!!!), the Vanishing Point is just odd and expensive for something that's a gadget sort of pen. If you want to up your writing experience, get some awesome inks. You literally can't do any better than Pilot's Iroshizuku line of inks. They make any pen a-motherfucking-mazing. Live that Take-sumi life. Its quality makes Noodler's Black bend over a barrel and request many foul and degrading things be done to it. And one bottle will last you a looooooong time. Get a good blue like Private Reserve DC Electric Blue or Visconti Blue (Lamy's Blue is quite nice as well).

After you get a good ink, get some Rhodia A4 pads. Lovely things, those Rhodias. But also Mead has some tablets which are high quality but I can't remember the name of at the moment because I'm about half a big bottle of wine into the night.

Stay with less expensive pens and realize you don't need to break the bank on this hobby. Look up some Jinhaos, PenBBS, etc. You can have great writing experiences without keeping up with the Joneses. I don't regret my purchases, per se, but I know they weren't necessary. This sub is great and fun to dork around in, I do enjoy it, but it's bad for the wallet.

Peace, love, and Humptiness forever. Time to go put the laundry from the washer into the dryer.

Oh yeah, always empty your pockets before you go to bed. Don't want them puppies going through the wash, ya herrrrrrrrd me?

:)

[Edit: I forgot to mention getting a fun and ridiculous pen because they're cheap and people will sometimes think they're super expensive. Like the Jinhao 950 here. I own one with a different design. It's heavy as heck and nearly everyone thinks it's either cool or funny. Lastly, welcome to the subreddit, you should have a good time.]

I must say, this turking thing is turning out to be fairly productive. I've managed to make enought to buy a new fountain pen and will soon have enough to get that bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki Ink that I've been wanting and love. Summoning /u/TheBlotterOfInks24 to share the news!

u/GeauxBulldogs · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

It's slightly over $20, but it is 350 ml - which is probably a lifetime supply. A coke bottle full of ink

u/tombolger · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

You're buying waterman ink and a $15 pen in this equation which is absurd. Cheap pens need to compared to cheap pens.

Let's say you buy a $2 Jinhao from eBay, free shipping, in an EF nib, including a converter, and then buy this $22 350 mL blue ink from Amazon.

It's 7 times the ink for twice the price, which is 3.5 times the value on ink. Plus, in an EF, you're writing a line more comparable to the .05 line of normal cheap pens, while putting far less ink down on the paper, which could mean that you use half or even less of the ink than you described. That 350 mL bottle would last forever. And the total cost for basically a lifetime of writing is $24.

The lie we tell ourselves is that we can save money by buying the pens and inks we WANT to use. We don't, it's a fantastic waste. But at its core there is truth to the economic upside of a refillable pen.

u/themcp · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

Ok. I'm going to give you a number of options here. Mostly they're white (because white goes with everything dahlink) but one is pink. They're all inexpensive. I'm giving you Amazon links and prices here, but you could use Goulet or maybe even get a better price on ebay. Here you go:

The Cross Beverly, about $36. Some people don't like Cross fountain pens, I love mine. This will be an attractive and reliable pen that she can be proud to use anywhere. It should come with Cross ink cartridges, which are very nice.

The Parker Vector, about $20. It's a bit plain looking, but they're superb pens, very reliable and write very well. It should have Parker ink cartridges.

The Jinhao 159, about $10. Very inexpensive, but Jinhao makes a surprisingly nice pen. It probably has a converter or can use standard cartridges. (It doesn't come with ink.)

The Jinhao 950 in white porcelain with blue chinese decoration, for less than $5.50. This is a very attractive pen (much nicer than the price implies) and the porcelain feels luxurious. (I have one with different decorations.) Also, the nib can be interchanged with the Goulet pen nibs. (Again, doesn't come with ink, probably has a converter in it.)

The Parker Urban, in pink, about $40. (It's not available in white, but that's a rather smashing pink, don't you agree?) This is a very stylish pen. She will be proud to pull it out and use it anywhere. I have one in black. Again, Parker makes fabulous pens. It probably comes with ink.

Or if you want to go very cheap on the pen and maybe get some nice ink with your budget, there's the Jinhao 599 under $5, although I will tell you you should be able to get this for under $2 on ebay.

Ink for her new pen

As I said above, the Parker pens come with ink, and they use a proprietary size cartridge. You can get a Parker converter or you can get craft syringes to refill a cartridge from bottled ink after she uses it up.

If you're getting her a beautiful pen, why not get her some lovely ink to go with it?

Wouldn't some lovely deep purple Iroshizuku ink (about $20) make a lovely impression with the white pens? I just got my first bottle of Iroshizuku this week and let me tell you, the bottle is gorgeous. Or maybe if she wants something less girly, a lovely deep turquoise for under $26?

Or if you want something a little less girly for ink, maybe you might want to look at the infamous (but glorious) Noodler's Baystate Blue for less than $13?

Or something slightly more exotic, with their Apache Sunset ink which shades from yellow to vermillion with writing?

If you want to get her some lovely ink in cartridges, because it's an easy way for her to start, you want to look at Goulet pens' web site for that, they have a lovely selection. I'll leave that shopping to you. Remember standard cartridges won't work in the Parker pens.

[edit:] If it were me, I'd get the Parker Urban, the Parker converter, the Iroshizuku purple, and the Noodler's Apache Sunset. That pen just screams style, even if it's stereotypically pink. (And they do make it in other colors, if you want to search Amazon.) She'll think of you every time she touches it.

u/superoblivionbread · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

Fountain pens deplete liquid ink much quicker than a ballpoint or gel pen or whatever. Just one of the quirks. And you're probably using it more than you thought! 1-ish mL of ink in a few days of moderate writing is not unheard of considering a single day of heavy duty note taking can do it.

The cost of ink can be negligible if you buy a bulk bottle of Pilot ink or similar. A 50mL bottle of ink will probably last 6-12 months.

edit: maybe don't invest in 350cc of ink if don't know if you'll like it or not. J.Herbin and some other inks are pretty expensive but brands like Pilot, Waterman and Pelikan sell regular ink that's a bit cheaper.

u/polypeptide147 · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

How much do you need? Because [[Pilot Blue-Black]] comes in large quantities

u/asciiaardvark · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

The Pelikan ink is sometimes on Amazon for 5¢/ml.

I bought it at that price. Still looks like it's full XD

u/treretr · 4 pointsr/BuyItForLife

To be honest, I would suggest a cheap fountain pen. They dont drip, they are a joy to write with, and the bottle refills are cheap as fuck.

Pilot Metropolitan is $14

A 3oz bottle of Noodlers is $12, and will last for around 10,000 pages of writing. (I really like 54th Massachusetts, but get bulletproof black if you are looking for that shade)

u/Incandescent_Sol · 4 pointsr/fountainpens

Sailor Kiwa Guro and there is also Sailor Sei Boku which is the blue black version.

u/Octetus · 4 pointsr/fountainpens
u/SecretPassage1 · 4 pointsr/ZeroWaste

this refillable fountain ball pen is amazing

Use a universal refill cartridge like this one and fountain pen ink from a bottle (NOT india ink, it clogs in the pens, when not top quality) and you're good to go for quite a long time.

u/Tjdamage · 4 pointsr/fountainpens

If you're in the US, Amazon.com sells them 20-22$ a bottle! If you buy 2 or more they'll even ship it to you for free.

u/[deleted] · 4 pointsr/fountainpens

Waterman Intense Black seems to be the best fit for your requirements. It's a nice black ink, and dries quickly.

Parker Quink is an option like you mentioned But I've used Quink in a fine nib and it wasn't grey but it was a light black. In a medium or bigger nib it should be a medium black.

I hope this helps.

If you ever get tired of the black and want blue again I highly recommend this ink by Pilot

Pilot Iroshizuku Bottled Fountain Pen Ink, Kon-Peki, Deep Blue, Turquoise Blue (69212) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003MVKFRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_lU5pDb5693QGP

u/CaliforniaJade · 3 pointsr/Calligraphy

This is my favorite ink on Amazon.

u/Nibs_dot_Ink · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

Pilot's line of basic colors (Black, Blue-Black, and Blue) are among some of the best standard colors ever.

I'm a fan of Pilot Blue-BLack: https://www.amazon.com/Ink-350ml-INK350BB-japan-import/dp/B001P35A74

It's $23, but per mL of liquid, it's great (about 6 cents per mL).

It behaves well on cheap paper, is reasonably water resistant, shades, and flows well.

u/ARbldr · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

OK, that is the basic, clean package. There are a lot of pens that will meet your needs, as others have said, the Pilot Metropolitan is a really nice pen, and will work very well, it is a solid win, and is recommended a lot because it is a very nice starting pen. Good looks and writes well.

Alternatives that would be good are the Nemosine Singularity medium or fine nib (I would avoid Extra Fine for a beginner). If you like the shape, the Lamy Safari is a pen a lot of people like, I don't think they are the best, but they are well regarded and reviewed.

There are others, Parker IM, Cross, etc. I also really like a lot of the chinese pens, but really think you might want to get down the road before jumping in on those in general. The only exception might be the Jinhao x750, but it is a larger/heavier pen.

Get a converter with whatever pen you buy (the Pilot and Nemosine come with converters, the Nemosine has a nice screw piston converter).

Now, get some ink. You are pretty good on budget, so if you want to go all out, get some Pilot Iroshizuku Take-Sumi. This is an expensive ink, but one of the nicest inks you can get. It is a luxury to use, and the bottle is exquisite. If you get this ink, you have hit your budget.

A little less expensive ink, but really good, get some Noodler's Black, EEL Black, or X Feather (if planning to write on really bad paper).

Hope that helps, you will get a nicer kit than the package above. If you want to add a journal/sketchbook Pentalic works well with fountain pens for cheaper than some of the other brands.

u/klundtasaur · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

I mentioned this last time, too, but just in case folks didn't see:

Kiwa-Guro is identical in every way to Platinum Carbon Black. They're both super dark, pigmented, no shading at all, completely waterproof blacks--honestly, it's impossible to tell them apart on the page, and there were no significant differences in terms of flow, dry-time, or feathering.

Platinum is a bit cheaper per ml (60ml instead of the Sailor's 50ml): Amazon has the Platinum for $22 while Kiwa-Guro is $19. It's a difference of only $0.02/ml, but if that's your thing, it's good to know. Personally, I prefer filling in the Platinum bottle (Sailor's insert is just a hair too short for larger nibbed pens)--but you can't go wrong with either. They're both superb inks.

Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue is supposed to be truly washable from clothing - widely used in schools here (and you can use those ink eraser pens too on paper, and if you buy a jar of world's best ink remover it's completely washable from hands too.. might be washable with just soap and water even?)

It's now called inkzap apparently

https://www.indy-pen-dance.com/InkZap.html

Looks like Amazon has the 1 liter bottles, it's listed as black but you can choose Royal blue.

https://www.amazon.com/Pelikan-Bottled-Fountain-Brilliant-301168/dp/B000WKZBCK?th=1&psc=1

Will get back with a Jinhao/hero list. (When it's not 3 am. Why the hell am I awake and on Reddit -> helps me feel back asleep)

Lamy also makes student school pens from wood with a few plastic parts. Those might be reasonably edible-proof if the plastic part can't come off? Lamy ABC https://www.amazon.com/LAMY-abc-Beginner-Nib-Fountain-x/dp/B000FA5EII/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1541470093&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=lamy+abc+fountain+pen&dpPl=1&dpID=31fzHCKMqGL&ref=plSrch

You can slide the students name into the cap.

I don't live in the US, but here in the Netherlands you can buy school pens in bulk at a discount if you're ordering as a school.(at heutink.nl but it's Netherlands only). You might have something similar in the US?

u/idkbanana · 3 pointsr/Watches

Ohh I'll have to check that out.

And I see you like Faber Castell, haha. But you should definitely keep checking massdrop every now and then. They get some good deals for fountain pens (everything else too)

But seriously, you're not kidding. After getting into fountain pens and writing with them, I take my time to write legibly. I love it!

And really good ink isn't bad at all! Check out Pilot Iroshizuku

u/d4mini0n · 3 pointsr/rawdenim

I have a regular at the coffee shop I work at that's a fountain pen fiend and likes embarrassing the coworker he comes in with by giving a full description of the pen and ink he has that day if there's no one in line behind him. It's usually some TWSBI, don't remember which, but he uses the Iroshizuku Kon-Peki cerulean blue and it's absolutely gorgeous.

I "shamed him" the other day because he brags about his pen then found out how much the Rotring 800 I carry costs, then his embarrassed coworker said he has one too.

u/Pachyphytum_Oviferum · 3 pointsr/tarot

I found it here on US Amazon . I doubt it's available at someplace like Hobby Lobby or Michael's, but you never know.

I'm sure it can be used with a quill, but I suspect the effects won't be nearly as grand. I've tried it with a dip pen and it wasn't great. I've tried it in several fountain pens and the effects vary wildly. I've found it looks best with a smooth, juicier fountain pen.

Many cheap papers will bleed/feather with any kind of fountain pen ink. You'll need something that's a little heavier and, preferably, smoother. The smoother and less absorbent the paper, the more the ink sits on top and creates the awesome effects as it dries. However, it doesn't have to be expensive paper - I've had a lot of luck with slightly-nicer-than-dirt-cheap papers.

/r/fountainpens has taught me everything I know; highly recommended if you're at all interested!

u/chopp3r · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

Aside from Pilot Parallel Mixable cartridges being sold in multicolour packs, I don't know of any. (But as an alternative, you can get sets of Pilot Petits or Platinum Preppies in a variety of colours relatively inexpensively.) Unfortunately those are not standard international cartridges. J. Herbin sells small (10 ml?) bottles of ink, but not in mixed sets of cartridges that I know of. It's odd, when you think about it - given the way people use pens now, with frequent ink colour changes, there might be a demand for sample packs like that, and manufacturers haven't caught on to the idea.

Addendum: I did find this: https://www.amazon.com/Gullor-International-Cartridge-Jinhao-Fountain/dp/B011QW2R7Y/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1478103325&sr=8-7&keywords=fountain+pen+ink+cartridges

Maybe it's available in your area or on ebay. Probably not the greatest ink though.

And this: https://www.amazon.com/Staedtler-Calligraphy-Pen-Set-Pieces/dp/B0009RRTBM/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1478102568&sr=8-12&keywords=pilot+parallel

Possibly an art store that carries calligraphy materials might have fountain pen cartridges in mixed packs or loose.

u/whence · 3 pointsr/pics

It's made by Noodler's Ink. I love their inks, and use them almost exclusively. Apache Sunset and other colors are available at Goulet Pens, and Amazon sells it, too. Goulet's customer service is outstanding, and they also also sell samples!

u/LH99 · 3 pointsr/boardgames

I did a couple different ways for ebonizing, and I highly recommend india ink https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IGK1OI/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

over anything else. It's definitely the easiest and most reliable, and it doesn't matter what wood (or tannin content) you have.

I also recommend the oil based (not water) polyurethane. The water based can have cloudy white areas, and the oil based turns a much nicer gold color over time.

Good luck! Would love to see the end result.

u/pogtheawesome · 3 pointsr/AskMen

best: a tub of thinking putty off amazon. Damn that shit's addicting.
2nd best: my fountain pen. And then a hell of a lot of ink.
runner up: my angel wrap blanket from amazon. So fluffy and versatile

worst: One time they had cookies on sale at my school for 25c a cookie and 50 for a glass of milk and I handed over all the money I had (like 10 bucks) and then got a very very bad tummy ache.
I'd do it again if I had the opportunity honestly

u/browniebiznatch · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

For a fun teal, I suggest J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor. Here's a good purple, green, and pink.

u/occultdeathcult · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Iroshizuku also have 15mL bottles that come in sets of three colors... for me it was ~$25 USD. My favorite is yama-budo from this set. Maybe these will be more easily available/affordable than shipping samples from the US?

Imo, the best way to improve your handwriting and become more confident with your pen is to use it a lot. And I totally agree with u/chewychubacca that once you get better ink, you'll want to write more. :)

The ink is probably this http://www.amazon.com/Noodlers-Ink-3Oz-Apache-Sunset/dp/B00362GU9E

The cartridge you see in the pictures is refillable.

Fountain pens usually start around $20 and go up to however much you're willing to spend.

There are fountain pens that can use both that type of refillable ink cartridges, and disposable capsules of ink.

u/vaaka · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Not exactly blue, but blue-black: Pilot blue-black. 350 ml of ink for $20! Smooth and fairly water proof.

u/Peoples_Bropublic · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

I don't know how much it would cost in Europe, but Pilot is quite cheap in America, especially if you buy it in large bottles. Here's a 350ml (almost 12oz) bottle of black ink for 20 USD. It's also available in blue-black and red. That comes in at

u/WinterCharm · 2 pointsr/business

No problem. Those come with an ink bladder (for use with an ink bottle) as well as one cartridge (disposable, and you can buy more).

Use both, see what you like. :) If you want really good ink (each bottle will last about 3-4 years) get this: http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Iroshizuku-Fountain-Moonlight-69205/dp/B003MVIYZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410929922&sr=8-1&keywords=pilot+iroshizuku

There are tons of colors to choose from. Pick one that's unique, but not overly festive (so a shade of blue or red, gray or black - no bright neon pink) and keep it. I know they don't come cheap, but remember, it's about 3-4 years of ink.

u/ProfessorVirani · 2 pointsr/education

Are you using the speedball nibs in dip pens, or in fountain pens (in which there is an internal ink supply and the pen does not need to be repeatedly dipped into the ink)? If the former, then India ink should work fine. If the latter, you would need to use an ink that specifically says it's for fountain pens.

If you end up needing fountain pen ink for the whole class, I think Pilot's 350mL bottles are the best bulk value around. https://www.amazon.com/Ink-350ml-INK350BB-japan-import/dp/B001P35A74

Looks like one enterprising Amazon.co.jp seller is already trying to get in the game. I would expect others to do the same shortly.

Before starting, you should settle on a nib width that you are going to use. A lot of time people choose Medium because they think it's middle of the road and they often leave unsatisfied because it isn't. The line width you get from normal writing utensils tends to be more of a Fine on a fountain pen. I find it hard to get good handwriting with a medium nib whereas a fine is a lot easier.

Now at £10 here are some options:

  • Pilot Varsity: Ready to use pen made by Pilot. I've never seen anyone complain about the way it writes, and it already comes with in inside it. You also get your choice of nib Cons? It's a disposable pen and isn't that pretty
  • Platinum Preppy: Very similar but actually takes cartridges. You can choose your nib. I think you'll have to buy the cartridges separately.
  • Baoer 801: Fine nibbed Chinese knockoff pen. Mine writes very well. Comes with fine nib. You'll probably want bottled ink. Section scratches easily but at the price I don't mind.
  • Baoer 388: Very popular Chinese Sonnet knockoff. Mine writes very well. You'll probably want to use bottled ink with this one. Medium nib only.

There are plenty of other Chinese pens out there, and you could go search them and find one you like too. I'm partial to Baoer pens: for me they have written better than any other Chinese pen. A lot of people recommend Jinhao pens, but their nibs run wide and they dry out a lot quicker when left sitting.

As for bottled ink, I would suggest it for the Chinese pens because they come with the converter that is used to fill from the bottle. The inks I would recommend for you are:

  • Parker Quink Black - my go-to black when it comes to inking any pen up.
  • Waterman Serenity Blue - good generic blue. maybe a little light.
  • Waterman Mysterious Blue - A darker, off blue
  • Any freaking Waterman ink, I've heard good things from them. Tender purple? go get it. I suggest Waterman inks because they are cheap in the UK and very fountain pen friendly.
u/dajohnnyboy · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Could get a Platinum Preppy or Pilot Varsity. I would recommend getting the Pilot MR Metropolitan for under $15. It includes a converter which allows you to refill your pen from a bottle of ink (much cheaper than buying cartridges). If you get the preppy and want to use bottle ink (much cheaper than cartridges), you will need to a converter for $5.

If you want some cheap ink, get [Pilot Blue Black](Ink 350ml INK350BB (japan import) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001P35A74/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nBJMybE9X0Y0T). It's $22 for 350 mL ($0.06/mL) which should last a very long time. Cartridges are about $0.50/mL.

I went through a lot of trial and error in the process almost ruining my 1.5mm parallel pen. But I finally learned and I've had great success with J. Herbin ink and Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Ink. What I do is save the old cartridges that come with the parallels, including the little ball that rolls around and I refill them using these syringes. This was done using the J. Herbin ink linked above.

You might already be aware, but please note: don't ever put india ink in a fountain pen unless you want a bad time! India ink will almost certainly clog up a pen (with shellac & other stuff), that's why specialized (more viscous) fountain pen inks exist! Anyway...

For brushes:
I went on quest to find the darkest, flattest, quickest to dry, and matte (no shiny shellac in this bottle) ink! What I found was Dr Martins Hi-Carb Black Star India Ink. This ink always dries without a hint of gradation, perfect for inking comics! OOh I love this ink.

For fountain pens:
After years of loving Noodler's Heart of Darkness ink (it's just so black!), I found something better last summer: Sailor Kiwa-Guro. My god, no words, it's hard to describe, and while it does dry a little slow, it DOESN'T BLEED EVER! Google image searches might help.

Anyway, uh, I love water based inks, can you tell ;)? I hope you find some favorites. My tastes are for ultra hi-contrast, but everyone is different. And oil based inks are another matter altogether...

P.S. My favorite travel brush pen is this guy. It's disposable and a little on the dry side, but the ink quality is fantastic. Out of the twelve or so brush pens I've tried, this is the only one I personally enjoy using. I notice jetpens has a 5pen sampler pack, you might wanna try that out.

u/moariarty · 2 pointsr/finishing

One more vote for india ink. I've used it on red oak before and it turns completely jet black with the texture of the grain still visible but without any color variation.

If you want solid black no stain even comes close to india ink. It is also cheap and doesn't smell toxic. This is the one I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IGK1OI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would get some india ink and try it out on a few scrap pieces of different woods. I suspect you'll find that you don't need to use a wood as expensive as walnut to get the result you are looking for - any inexpensive hardwood like oak should work just fine.

u/penguinpunisher · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Sailor Kiwa-Guro, definitely! A waterproof, pigmented ink that works well with pretty much any paper. Dries rather quick, and doesn't feather.

Click to expand my chart. You'll see there are 3 types of sellers:

  1. Amazon (new)

  2. 3rd party

  3. and 3rd party used.

If Amazon (new) is available, I use that as my posted price. My chart will include all 3. The reason for using Amazon (new) over 3rd party is that the API doesn't factor in shipping, so the 3rd party sellers price is misleading more often than not.

If you click over to the all items page, you'll see the $22 price from Amazon, as well as the other 3rd party sellers.

I just posted this in a vaguely similar thread. It's less about the details of your adventure and more about the delivery:

Create ambiance:

  • /u/UwasaWaya talked about candlelight, but don't neglect the other senses. Pick some creepy background sounds. It doesn't need to be music necessarily - check out Tabletop Audio for some awesome ambient sound. Click the "Horror" tab right under the masthead, but also consider browsing other categories. Note: some tracks also include subtle music, and that is specified when you pick your tracks.

  • Use perception to certain types of interaction, and bounce one player's honest reaction off others. Sometimes I'll have one player (who passes a perception check better than others) wear headphones while I play audio of something they hear. It's honest enough to be "legit", but they still don't usually know what it is because I haven't yet told them. So they hear something horrifying (one example is insect noises mixed with ripping flesh), and all of the other players see their face go from confusion to disgust to worry. It works wonders to create an environment in which everyone is uneasy.

    Consider presentation and "the reveal"

  • Remember that the scariest things are the ones we don't fully understand. Consider the writings of H.P. Lovecraft (author of The Call of Cthulhu, etc.): He often described his horrors as, well, something that couldn't be described. Things man was not meant to know or cannot comprehend. Many of the terrible scenes, ancient horrors, or despicable acts happened "just off camera", so to speak. He'd describe the terror and mad ravings of those who witness the horrors, but often avoided describing the horrors themselves directly except through their eyes, after the fact. Thus, players are hearing someone's second-hand description that is distracted by that person's emotions, which lends an air of mystery, like the players know it's bad but can't quite get the complete picture of just how bad it is, leaving it up to their respective imaginations.

  • Instead of describing a horrific scene in detail, consider describing a scene in which something horrible clearly happened, but exactly how horrible and the extent of the horror is unclear. Which is more horrifying? A flayed, dead body lying on the floor, with all the details visible? Or a pool of blood, scratch marks on the floor from their broken, bleeding fingernails as they tried and failed to escape, signs of an attack by something with claws and extremely sharp teeth, and long streaks leading from the blood that terminate at a severed hand, a few fingers left on it, that is attached to bones stuck under a locked door? And what if the hand vibrates slightly as if being gnawed on by something unseen that disappears moments before the door is kicked in? Something horrifying is there, right around they veritable corner, but they just missed it! What if they have their backs turned at the wrong time, and get singled out while the others are examining something else? Will they even know what happens to them entirely as their own flesh is gnawed off by this elusive, yet clearly dangerous creature?

Think of "gimmicks" to add realism and creepiness:

  • Make "real" clues that you can hand out at the table. Don't just describe them; give your players something tangible that they can touch, hold, and examine. Some examples are below.

  • What time period is your setting? If modern-ish, type up some fake newspaper stories and print them on newsprint. Rub it with dirt and stain it with coffee for an authentic feel. If older, grab some parchment at a local art/craft store, a cheap calligraphy pen, and write on it. Tear the edges, then burn them with a lighter or matches. Voila! Instant treasure map/ancient text/scrawlings of a madman.
  • Consider purchasing some sealing wax and a seal (relatively cheap online or at chain art supply stores) and sealing envelopes, rolled parchment, etc. Adds a nice touch, yet is very easy (and relatively cheap) to do. Add a folded, tied, or wrapped ribbon under the seal for added flair, if you're looking for that sort of thing. However, that's more "fancy" and less mysterious, depending of course on where the letter comes from.
  • Order some glow in the dark paint or ink to create secret messages or clues on the other materials you hand out, for a later reveal. I'd recommend Noodler's Blue Ghost. Note that it's a fountain pen ink, so you'll need a fountain or calligraphy pen to use it. One way to create these clues is to paint/write a complete message on one of your other clues/artifacts, but another is to create a partial message in a visible ink and finish it off using glow in the dark ink, so that it's only readable when they view it under "moonlight" or whatever. Note: these images aren't mine; they're just where I got the idea.

  • Fake blood can be scary on your "clues" if used correctly. Don't just use "blood" for the sake of blood. Have a reason it's there. Maybe someone died while handing it over, so there are drops of blood that fell from an open wound. Perhaps they were injured while writing it, which led to smudges. Apply blood as it would have actually rubbed/smudged/whatever, rather than just pouring it on. I recommend Diamine Oxblood. It's available on Amazon, but it's much cheaper from Goulet Pens (which is where I linked), and you can get the Noodler's Blue Ghost there as well as many fountain pen options. They also offer many different styles of ink (cartridge, dip, sample sizes to try things out, etc.), and it's a great company. They include a lollypop with every order, and they're packaged with ridiculous care. Note that you will likely get ink on your hands, and having Oxblood (just ink that's named Oxblood; not real ox blood) on your hands will sometimes get you odd looks.

  • Imagine whether or not any special effects are possible. Can you cause something light and "tickly" to fall on your players as they're passing through cobwebs, or right as you're describing strange noises? Can you cause noises to occur somewhere nearby, such as through your TV or stereo via bluetooth or similar control? (Without being revealed on a screen visible to your players?) Consider recruiting a friend to come by your house/gaming location at a specific time, pound on the wall when you text him, and disappear before anyone can see him. Or maybe he smacks something that looks dead or evil against a nearby window. Perhaps he screams down the hall where he's been hiding at an opportune time. Basically, think about how you might make a customized "haunted house" during halloween and think about how you can apply it to your scenario.

A warning about gimmicks: the more gimmicky they are, the greater the chance that they'll become campy or funny. But if you pull them off well, they'll make for an excellent experience. :-)

    Good luck!
u/CyaInTheSkies · 1 pointr/fountainpens

What marketed place on the totem pole? Montblanc doesn't even acknowledge the existence of other pen companies, they don't advertise their ink as being superior to others.

On US Amazon Iroshizuku and Montblanc inks are both around $20, and Montblanc bottles have 10 ml more ink.

>Though everything you said holds true for both montblanc’s ink lineup and Pilot’s

Then why does Pilot's ink put Montblanc's to shame if they are so similar? To me it seems like the difference between the two is just in color, not quality.

u/ayeneneyeee · 1 pointr/fountainpens

Oh! If you're interested in Pilot's Blue Black, on Amazon there's a 350mL version in a glass bottle imported from Japan that works out to be great value for money. Here

Starter: Lamy Safari with some cartridges.

I have this pen at work and use cartridges rather than a converter to save time and prevent potential catastrophes of filling them. If you like the fountain pen in the GIF, TWSBI Vac 700, should be a great second starter or you can get a converter; just know you'll need bottled ink.

My favorite ink right now is Pilot Iroshizuku, lines are clean for most of my foutain pens, it dries decently fast and is easy to clean out of the pen aswell.

u/goosebyrd · 1 pointr/PenmanshipPorn

I just bought a Conklin Herringbone with EF nib, and Pilot Iroshizuku ink. All-time favorite pen now!

u/TheOrganHarvester · 1 pointr/Pen_Swap

You can definitely manage to get Iroshizuku bottles for lower than that in the UK though. For example, how about these. These are from Japan, so have a longer shipping time, but have no import fees as the are under the threshold, and have Amazon customer service regardless. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I think you may be somewhat overpriced, with shipping costs taken into account, some of them price pretty closely with the main UK storefronts (Thewritingdesk.co.uk has them for £27.50).

If you do lower the price, I am interested in a few of the iroshizuku bottles. If not, I wish you the best in selling them.

Diamine, tons of colors and are affordable (especially in Europe) many colors are dupes of more expensive inks out there. They likely make ink for other companies that sell ink but don't have ink manufacturing capabilities, like Akkerman. They have a lot of great colors, but their water resistance is generally low.

Noodler's would be the ton's of colors and affordable US company but he's a 1 man show so people don't have much faith in him combined with his political views he's one of the more controversial company/people in the fountain pen world. He seems to experiment with inks and ink properties so he has some interesting water resistant colors and UV glowing colors out there.

I like water resistant inks so I'm a fan of Pilot Blue and Blue Black, Platinum Blue Black, Platinum Classic Iron Gall series, Platinum Pigment ink series, and Sailor Nano-pigment Seiboku and Souboku.

If you're looking for great bang for buck blue ink, I would buy a 350ml Pilot Blue Black bottle for 20 something dollars. But you'll need another bottle to put that into, so either an empty bottle or another bottle of a nicely shaped Pilot Blue Black.

Ah, a journal you say? That sounds lovely. A journal is a lovely way to record and store your excess thoughts. You can look back on them and reflect, and compare your current thoughts to how you used to think in the past. It's a good way to keep track of the way your mind can mature over time. If you organize your thought processes, they flow much more easily and much more naturally. It can be a very calming process. Personally, I know it relaxes me.

Have you ever used a fountain pen before? A friend of mine recommended them to me about a year or so ago. I absolutely love writing with mine. It has a certain way of flowing, you know? My thoughts come straight out of my brain through my neck, down to my right shoulder, through my arm, into my right hand, and it feels almost like the electricity courses through my fingers and I like...become the pen, in a way.

Is this a generally well liked ink? I bought a bottle and I seem to like it, wondering what other people think about it before I buy more lol.

That does look like a really nice pen. My current (or soon to be secondary pen) is the Waterman Hémisphère in black which was pretty nice, but wanted to go "up" in terms of quality.

I'm new to the separate inks side of fountain pens, so at the moment I've just got a bog standard Waterman black ink from Amazon: http://amzn.to/2hfeIQu. I thought I'd go with a cheap set to get the feel of using the inks, and will run from there into some nicer ones.

Just this week I got Kon-peki and Shin-kai for $19 each and Momiji for $15 on Amazon.com. All had Prime shipping.

For Yama-budo, anywhere from $20-25 is a typical price on Amazon.com; earlier in the fall it was under $20 for several weeks (CamelCamelCamel). Occasionally it's cheaper from a third-party seller who ships directly from Japan, but the savings are usually on the order of $2-3 with a wait time of two weeks (as opposed to two days).

It's not being sold on their website. So would this work as well?

That is pretty cool. So I could technically mix my own colors right?

Bungbox? The Sailor ones? Yeah, they’re quite cheap.

Can’t beat that per ml though: Pilot 350 ml bottles, black, blue black, red.
