I would recommend a belt that can be undone by a toddler.

Basically just cinches the back of the pants without the kid having to mess with a clasp/fastener at the front. If you're a decent seamstress, you can very easily make those for yourself.

I think the cap plus micropuff is a solid combo for the pct. I’d just carry that the whole way. If you’re gonna have a rain jacket, you could probably drop the wind shirt, but might be personal preference. In two thrus I’ve rarely needed an active layer outside of rain/snow in northern Washington in September. And in that case you’re probably just gonna wear the rain jacket.

I used the sun runner on my 2017 thru and really liked it. I wore the hat without the shade basically every single day and every day for maybe 8-9 months after trail till it pretty much fell apart. I now have this shade that attaches to any hat. Same concept really. Just no snaps.

It keeps the sun off their face and neck and if they're in the pool or the sea and it gets wet, it keeps their head cool too.

I don't think there is necessarily anything wrong with baseball caps as long as there is no top button, but neck protection is definitely desirable. If you opt the do the flower sash I’d cut it to just under the length you need and sew a touch of elastic on the ends (and sew the ends together) so it just slide on and off and lays almost flat on whatever service you choose to display it on.
