Probably lame, but when I get bored with everything I always fall back on doing rubik's cubes. They're super cheap on amazon. And they have 4x4s, 5x5s, and so on. But the algorithms get weird.

u/goatserevival · 9 pointsr/gaming

I read somewhere that they were called "The Imp", but wikipedia has them under "15 puzzle". I learned how to solve one in less than 10 seconds thanks to final fantasy, and eventually bought this one, which is pretty sturdy and has lasted me almost 10 years. Don't buy the keychain version, though, it breaks down pretty quick.

u/MyEyesAreSoDry · 8 pointsr/EDC

I would strongly suggest getting a different cube. Chinese cubes are cheaper, turn smoother, and overall have a higher quality. What solve method are you using? Any tips for learning OLL/PLL?

If your only cube is a 3x3, you might want to consider spending ~$20 on the MoFang Jiaoshi Cubing Classroom set. It includes:

  • 2x2 MF2S
  • 3x3 MF3S (if you get the stickered set) or MF3RS (if you get the stickerless set)
  • 4x4 MF4S
  • 5x5 MF5S

The 2x2 isn't awesome, but it's good enough to give you a feel for the puzzle and is pretty similar to a LingPo which costs a bit more and still has catching problems. The 3x3 MF3RS (I got stickerless so I can only comment on that one) is a great budget cube that gets a lot of praise all over this sub, and for good reason. Some of the reviews weren't too kind to the MF4S, but I quite like it and given how the Wuque alone costs as much as this entire set and STILL isn't great out of the box, I'd say start with this for 4x4 and upgrade later if you want to get more serious about it. The MF5S is nice, and while it is the only 5x5 I've used I'm happy with it. All in all, great deal for the price and a nice way to try out several puzzles to see what you enjoy solving the most.

    The Cubicle

    Amazon

Note: Amazon says it has the MF3S, and they're wrong. It's the stickerless set and has the MF3RS, just like The Cubicle says. A note of caution: I got the set from Amazon and the cubes we're scuffed up a little, so they didn't exactly arrive in pristine condition, but the price was good and they work fine so I wasn't going to complain. I wiped them down and they're fine.

I buy almost all of my cubes off of Amazon. Here's my favorites under $10.

I'm avoiding standard cubic / cuboid puzzles because those are easy to find.

Axis Cube: Cheap, fun, and difficult. It's also tiled, which is nice.

Mirror Cube: Turns amazingly well, and it's a challenge to solve the first time around.

ShengShou Pyraminx Clicky, adjustable, and fun to play with.

YJ Weel Puzzle A harder version of the 2x2x3.

I've always felt that while video games obviously involve art (visual, music, storytelling, etc), video games themselves are not art. Or at least are art on a level with something like this.

But saying this to video gamers is apparently interpreted as an attack on their very souls.

Here's a great tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=609nhVzg-5Q

Learnt from that exact video 3 years ago. Today I average around around 20 - 25 seconds, around 15 if I really focused on practising. This tutorial in particular really helps if down the line you wanted to learn more advanced methods. It's really fun, once you know how the cube works. Only thing that is quite daunting is remembering the set of moves (algorithms). But honestly once you keep doing those same moves over and over you'll end up building muscle memory. Have fun!

EDIT: Try to stay away from the Rubik's Cube brand. It's designed poorly and will tend to lock up quite easily, difficult to turn, and the stickers wear down quite a bit. Here's a link to a cube that is much easier to handle and also way cheaper (which surprised me, it's usually the opposite): https://www.amazon.com/ShengShou-3x3x3-Puzzle-Cube-Black/dp/B004UTTXJG/ref=sr_1_8?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1500431094&sr=1-8&keywords=rubik%27s+cube

I was reading a reddit thread today on rubik's cubes and decided after talking to a few people that I should start playing with cubes again. So after getting some suggestions for a new cube I've ordered this.

I remember in high school we were all obsessed with speedcubing. especially /u/aznblur :P that was so long ago...

That makes two different things I've gotten into this week. Getting back into cubes and learning the fine art of controlling a quadcopter. :D

u/PM_ME_CLOCK_PICS · 3 pointsr/Cubers

Your best option would be a transparent stickerless cube like this http://www.amazon.com/3x3x3-Yulong-Transparent-Stickerless-puzzle/dp/B00JXCBWL2

u/mark3t · 3 pointsr/gaming

The cube on the outside of the machine looks like this one. I have that version of the cube, and they are engineered for 'speed cubers'

I am good at solving the rubik's cube, just not super fast. I can solve 9/10 times under a minute. My best is about 30 seconds.

u/BoscoBA001 · 3 pointsr/Cubers

My personal favorite was the axel cube which after almost a week I was able to wrap my head around and figure out how to solve

u/epic4evr11 · 3 pointsr/Cubers

The Thunderclap v1 is excellent, especially for the price. Shipping isn't fast, but my last order went from Minnesota to California in a week. Also, the cube only costs $11.

u/runningsneaker · 3 pointsr/Cubers

I got this set of 4 cube (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y4GF966/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

i have been doing some reading and I am trying to figure out how good that 3x3 is. It feels WAY faster than what I had been using - use thing with carbon colored stickers and corners that are cut which I picked up $3 at my local "deals and discount" on whim. As with all hobbies, I sense there are diminishing returns as you move up in price point - a $30 cube is probably 200% better than a $20 cube but 98% as good as the $40 cube - but I just dont know where this sits on the spectrum.

Any thoughts lol?

u/LukusAurelius · 2 pointsr/Throwers

Begleri are awesome! You can use them as a simple fidget/time waster by just flipping them, or you can do tricks (skill) with them.

Rubik's Cubes are great too. Been doing those since I was 6, and I always get comments on it. If you want to get into cubing, get a Dayan ZhanChi and some silicone spray lubricant, and visit solvethecube.com.

Have fun with your yoyos and other skill toys you pick up!

On a related side-note, I just bought the Perplexus Epic. (Around $30). SO MUCH FUN! I can't put the damned thing down.

I'm still an absolute beginner (Still one algorithm away from learning the beginner method). I kinda did it backwards. I bought this ShengShou on amazon because it was crazy cheap. I bought a Rubik's brand cube last night because I wanted to feel the difference... The difference is HUGE. The ShengShou is leaps and bounds better, and is currently $2.55 on Amazon, whereas it was like $10 for the Rubik's cube.

One of my students thought I was cheating every time I solved a cube. She took it upon herself to take a piece out of the cube and move them around... It's nothing expensive: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OKIFV3Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WpshybDVAHW9D

After having fixed it, it moves like shit. It never was a great cut anyway (well, when I first got it... it was like heaven compared to my Rubiks). I've been eyeing a GTS M, but I don't think I am good enough or can spend $50 for that kind of cube.

But, I really hate how it moves now, it makes me want to move back to the clunky Rubik's

> If the tolerances were a bit looser, it may be able to begin it's rotating at 88.375 degrees and not bind up. That could enable a reduction in the overall time it takes the system to solve the cube.

Which is why "speedcubes" have the corners cut, if you compare that one to a picture of a regular Rubik's cube you can see how it's much tighter.

As an example, this is how much give the corners on my cube has!

Even at that degree I can still easily turn the right facing side away and towards me, that is not possible on a standard Rubik's cube.

u/PurnurplePanda · 2 pointsr/Cubers

I want to buy a GTS2M, and have a gift card to amazon. The one I found on amazon is sold by D-FantiX, and $4 cheaper than thecubicle. Do you think that these are the same cubes, I do not want to get the first GTSM because I heard that the magnets fall out a lot.

I love how two comments and the poster spelt Diango's name wrong.

I'd love this. Windows 7 comes with a picture puzzle gadget and my fasted time with it is 0:24 seconds. Used to play it in school since you could get detention for playing games on the internet and the games that comes with Windows were disabled.

I'd like personal high scores and not global. If someone gets lucky and everything is correct but one tile they could get a extremely quick time.

I would absolutely love this though.

Edit: I also had this as a kid. Taught myself how to solve it on long trips in the car.

Ideally, she has an interest in the game overall, but the situations and play does not suit her, before a final "You're out." try to see if there's something she is interested in that can be added without detracting from the rest of the game. The 5e DMG (p.6) has a list of main things that players like to get from their game (the list is quite applicable to any system). Some people like just one or two things from the list, others like a whole bunch. Maybe she's really into puzzles, in which case you just a one or two puzzle rooms to the next dungeons and at the end the party finds a puzzle box, so any time she's being nonsocial you just assume her character is fiddling with it obsessively (could even make it a physical artifact!)

u/Ducttape2021 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I bought all of my immediate family really good presents this year for Christmas. I decided to buy them each some sort of game, so that the excitement just increases after opening presents, instead of going, "Oh, now I get to wear these socks and whatnot."

Also, one of my sisters is getting this, and no doubt it will blow her mind as it did mine when I became aware of its existence during my eight hour online gift shopping binge a few weeks ago.

u/inanimatus_conjurus · 1 pointr/Cubers

I have a theory about that price markup thing. Cubelelo has an Amazon store where they sell a lot of the same products as their website. By showing the MRP as much higher than it is, they can claim to have a 50-60% discount on the products. Example.

I assume this boosts the hit rate for Amazon searches, and definitely promotes impulse buying when the general public sees such large discounts. Not the best business practice, but lots of sellers do this.

u/SEND_ME_RUBIKS_CUBES · 1 pointr/blogs

A MoYu AoLong V2 from Amazon

u/jscythe · 1 pointr/linuxmasterrace

I was watching a documentary on pinball when one of the guys they were interviewing said that video games never clicked for him because they had an ending. And that was kind of an epiphany for me. I made the logical leap to FOSS gaming and I realized that a FOSS game has to be made from pure mechanics and can have no actual ending.

Take some golden-age arcade game like Robotron 2084. To this day, I can still spend hours playing this game. Yes, an individual session may only last ten minutes at most. But you can't "win" the game. You can only do a little bit better than you did the last time. This game is infinitely replayable. The same goes for most early 80's arcade games. You can see a similar philosophy in the games of Kenta Cho. This ability to go back to a game and still find challenge is the reason why there's a roguelike renaissance going on in the industry right now.

And I haven't even started on mods. The one thing that keeps on Windows isn't commercial games. It's Brutal Doom. The minute I figure out how to run Brutal Doom on Linux is the minute I check out of Windows completely. Seriously, all I need is Brutal Doom and Oblige and I'm set. I've also spent a considerable amount of time playing Arcane Dimensions with the Darkplaces source port of Quake 1.

What I'm getting at here is that single player games can have as much, if not more, longevity as multiplayer games provided that they are:

  1. Infinite loops
  2. comprised of procedurally generated content
  3. Have a means for players to create content.

    or all of the above.

You are looking at games in the same way that you look at movies or books. You aren't looking at games as games. Think about all the paper we waste making crossword and sudoku puzzles. That's what a game is. It's a series of restrictions that challenges the player. A good game, like a Rubik's cube, is timeless and can be altered to provide additional challenge. A bad game, like any choose your own adventure book, is extremely finite, easy to reproduce and quickly forgotten.

I purchased a mid-range cube that isn't super loose and doesn't really bind: D-FantiX Moyu Weilong GTS V2 M Magnetic Speed Cube 3x3, Weilong GTS2 M Magic Cube Puzzle Black. I need to devote the same amount of time to learning the F2L (first 2 layers) method if I want to see major time improvements.

You will definitely have your hands full with your little one but having something to do that shakes your mind up helps with the daily routine and lack of sleep (I also taught myself the alphabet backwards one afternoon also on paternity leave while trying to get some rest - the body was exhausted but my brain was still spinning). Good luck on motherhood!

This is the one I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009L8RTQU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was out of stock earlier in the day but it appears to currently have one available. I didn't pay extra for shipping though and it'll take about a month to make it's way here from China :(

I bought it off of amazon, from here
and I noticed that the sticker on the white center piece was kinda different from the ones i see on youtube and stuff, so i was just wondering if any of you could tell me if it is counterfeit

I like getting baked and doing these puzzles. I have three and I've never finished one.

The real question is does the grinder work pretty good?

I have that! It's a Y&J MoYu 3x3 1 X 3x3x3 YJ Yulong Stickerless Cube Puzzle, Transparent.
