Just get an NPF adapter and a couple NPF batteries. It would probably cost you around $60 and accomplish the same thing with a much smaller footprint.

One of those batteries will keep you going for several hours.

Amp Hours (Ah) is not a cross platform measurement of capacity. 5Ah for your phone is likely at a different voltage than the 2.6Ah LPe6 battery.

Amps*Volts=Watts

Watt hours is a true measurement of capacity because you can extrapolate the amps and volts.

What I use is an NPf 970 battery on a Blindspot plate with a 12v dc out to weipu 2 pin cable.

Companies get cute with what they quote as the "MAh capacity" of a given battery, but the Sony standard for a 970 battery is 6600MAh at 7.4v I believe, which is 48.84 Wh. I haven't really seen truly higher capacities than that despite what manufacturers say.

The Pocket 4k draws *roughly* ~25Wh of power (from my tests), depending on screen brightness, codec, frame rate, and attached accessories. So one of those batteries gets you perhaps up to 2 hours if you're lucky. If you need endurance longer than that, I HIGHLY recommend getting a VMount or Gold Mount battery instead of a battery bank, because it will allow you to expand to other cameras and lights in the future and they will provide much more power. You can get VMount batteries that go up to roughly 100Wh. These are professional cinema batteries the industry standard.

NPF batteries allow you to power other things like lights and monitors as well, plus they are small enough to gimbal mount or go handheld if you need to. Banks and VMount will be larger and heavier. That is why I chose NPF.

I never got it to work right and WiFi drained the battery fast. I just got this Wasabi Power Extended Battery for GoPro HERO3, HERO3+ (with Backdoors) for my 3+ Silver and just leave it running. 1080/30 and a good 64GB card give me about 4 hours of uninterrupted shooting.

u/jamesisbest2 - if you want to be an indie filmmaker, I recommend you avoid Canon DSLRs, or any other still camera with an add-on video feature and a weak codec.

Instead, I recommend a $440 RAW-capable Pocket Cinema Camera to get started - plus an inexpensive manual lens.

You can plug a $15 TRRS lav into your phone and put it on your talent to record audio.

When you save up a little more money, you can get an external battery plate and batteries for your camera, a decent shotgun mic/recorder combo - plus maybe an LCD viewfinder and a pistol grip to make the camera easier to handle.

Here is a picture of my similar BMPCC/pistol grip/external battery rig.

This setup is affordable and will give you the ability to produce cinema quality product.

Here are a few short films shot with this camera:

I have an RP and haven't had any battery issues in the few weeks (and 8-900 shots) I've used it. I bought these batteries from Amazon and they work fine. The batteries are small enough to fit a couple of extra in a pocket, and the charger is USB which is nice. I have an M5 that uses the same batteries so I have about 7 total (3 Canon brand and 4 of the Ravpower brand) and the only problem I've come across is that the Ravpower batteries are just a tiny bit larger than the Canon ones so I have to shake the camera to get them out, especially when I have the grip extender on there.

I got the RP with the 24-105L lens and a discounted control ring EF-RF adapter through canonpricewatch.com, and all together the package was within your price range. I also bought the RF 35mm 1.8 and it's an awesome lens. I got the grip extender through Canon's website for a discount after I registered the RP.

Lens Filter - ok you will hear all kinds of opinions on this one. Me, I put a filter on the front of all my lenses as soon as they come out of the box. i also never use a lens cap and I spend a lot of time shooting in dusty/sandy places. To me I would rather replace a filter than a lens. Other people will disagree.

Get this Panasonic G7 kit and a Rode VideoMicro. And grab a couple of cheap spare batteries and an extra memory card.

Easily the best video camera at the $500 price level.

I've had great success with the Anker 2nd Gen Astro Pro. At 15000mAh, it's truly an all-day battery. And it should be, as 15000mAh is nearly 19 times the stock battery, and over 12 x the Wasabi Power EN-EL20 aftermarket batteries that I also use. Upon receiving the Anker, I ran the BMPCC for a 7-hour bench test before deciding "that's good enough", and turning it off to go to bed - ha! I've also taken it on several shoots, and never had to worry about how long I left the camera on. The only fiddly bit is that you still need to rely on a a non-locking barrel connector (I had previously wired up my own adapter from parts), and that doesn't make for the most reliable connection. But, if you keep an internal batt in the cam at all times, you're protected.

The Anker's also big and flat, making it less than optimal for rigging. I used it at the back of a DIY run-n-gun rig, but I'd like to have a smaller option for more stripped-down scenarios.

I had a few Sony NP-F style batteries, and hoped that at 7.4v they might run the BMPCC with an inexpensive battery plate, but no such luck. If you want to use NP batts, which are a great, small form factor, you need a battery holder that steps up the voltage to 12v. Ikan makes one they charge up the nose for.

I purchased a 7 inch unit with a 'Feelworld' sticker on it for $135 and it works surprisingly well. I also bought some batteries (Sony L series) and a charger as well as a magic arm and a carrying case. I am very pleased with it and the only gripe I have with it is that the power button is more like a standby button. I have to remember to pop the battery out so I don't end up with it being dead.

For some reason they have bad reviews, but they work great. Keep the battery constantly at 100% durning sunny days. I highly recommend them. Make sure you get the Arlo ones. I tried a knock off one before because they where cheaper. The camera thought it was constantly plugged in and thus the battery just drained.

Most if not all of your example images could have been taken with a 18-55 lens - the kit lens. The main difference between the kit lens and "better" lenses in its focal length range is the last 5 to 10% increase in image quality (IQ) will cost an additional $400 to $1000.

Here is a link to some images from the kit lens.

This is why I recommend downloading/reading the owners manual for any product anyone is ever interested in. Read the manual before buying and you'll find out all the things you like/don't like about a product, without having to spend a dime.

You don't have another solution with that camera; it can only charge with the back door open and there are no battery bacpac's available that will fit.

Edit: I stand corrected: https://www.amazon.com/Wasabi-Power-Extended-Battery-GoPro/dp/B01AB0KL0C, but then you lose the use of the LCD.

u/kodack10 · 2 pointsr/bmpcc

The problem is in outputting enough juice, mounting the battery, and it's really not that much cheaper. Not to mention the incredibly slow time to recharge the bank once it's exhausted. Many charge over USB C or 1 amp/12v barrel connectors and can take 12 hours or more.

Consider that a battery bank for laptops and phones has to have a charge controller, and several bucky converters for each voltage output, in addition to the lithium cells, but a V mount battery is just the battery, so it's cheaper to produce.

A decent vmount battery is in the $120 range, and comparable watt hour recharge batteries for laptops and cellphones can easily cost more, have lower power storage, reliability issues from cheap builds, and no plates to mount them with.

For example this is a 190 watt hour V-mount battery with cables and a fast charger for $159.

How many batteries/SD cards does everyone have?

I've just gotten into the GoPro scene and started with a 64GB and 32GB SD card and it feels like I have to pull the video off the cards each day. It's very easy for me to go hiking for 4+ hours and fill up the 64GB card and start to eat into the 32GB card. Then in the evening, I need to spend half an hour downloading the video to a computer or else I'll have no space to shoot the next day. Even something as simple as biking to work eats an hour of footage and fills up a good part of the 32GB card.

I'm looking at a pair of 64GB or a single 128GB card to allow 2-3 days of heavy shooting without having to spend time to download the footage off the cards.

On the battery front, I have 3 batteries and seem to be doing ok. Three Batteries gives me ~4-6 hours of 1080p footage which is the limit of my SD cards. My main issue here is charging them up at night because I can only charge in the GoPro and a 2 battery Wasabi charger which eats up a ton of USB ports.

A Smatree 3 battery charger and 3 batteries seem like a good investment to give me breathing room if I forget to charge up the batteries for one night.

Edit/Update: Picked up the Smatee 3 batteries and battery charger, a GoPro Bacpac, and a 128GB Lexar 633x Micro SD Card.

I got this to hook directly into the intercom:
http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-Aircraft-Cable-by-Nflightcam/dp/B00GLZXCW6

But I can see how that would be an issue if you're using the USB port to charge the battery.

Looks like if you have a BacPac battery that you get an access to an extra USB cable, so maybe you could run both?

I have a very similar setup with a couple of revisions:

For a handle, I first purchased the one you're looking at, only to return it and buy the 1955 NATO handle (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07145WLX3/), which is much easier add/remove (for storage purposes). It's super secure and adjustable to boot! Even comes with a allen key storage!

For SSD mounts, I bought the CAMVATE (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M66TM6J/). The Smallrig version will only mount to one designated spot on the SR cage- this CAMVATE product can mount anywhere in case you need to rebalance or configure it differently.

As for power, I opted for a CORE Powerbase; (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JFDZTXL/). It'll give you much more runtime than a NPF and especially more than LP batteries, and you can check the LCD to see how much battery you've got left instead of guessing. Though I'd also recommend grabbing a DTAP to Weipu adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KGQ869X/), so you don't have to worry about the dummy battery (and you'll also have a secondary source of power if you need to switch batteries).

u/jam6618 · 1 pointr/videography

Both of what these guys said is great advice and you will definitely have to consider what to do.

The G7 often fluctuates in price between $500 and $800 so try and get it on sale if you can. Find a price tracker website and use it if you don't check prices everyday.

If you go with HybridCamRev's idea, I would highly recommend getting the g7 on sale. That would allow you to get an sd card, shotgun mic, battery, and a lav mic. You could also go for a cheaper tripod since the g7 is so light. Up to you though.

That's almost exactly the same setup I have! I sent a week in Little Cayman doing 3 dives a day and a handful of night dives and that setup served me well. I'd like to make a helpful suggestion...when diving but not using the lights they fold nicely behind the camera and it balances the camera through the water. They can be a tad top heavy and the drag through the water makes it easy for you to introduce some vertical wobble if shooting while moving.

I also noticed the 100-degree beam was a bit broad for illuminating individual subjects. For example on night dives the other divers would be against the wall focusing on some small life and my lights come on and BAM! daylight returns. I'll probably end up grabbing a 20-degree head for my next trip and my night dives would be with 20 and the UV.

I know you don't want to run down that hole of buying everything but here's what worked especially well for me:
Batteries: A pair of Wasabi extended batteries with dual charger. That probably doesn't work for your Hero 5 but I could get 2 hours per pack and always had the second one ready to go. With that an a pair of 64gb microSD cards to cycle through I could tackle an entire day with what I had on me. A quick charge overnight and we were ready for the next day.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MQ6PBX2

Lanyard: This was my favorite! The velcro wristband kept the camera close by in case it slipped from my hands but I could also clip the camera tray to my BC if I needed to focus on something more important.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007H6DR9G

Charger: With my phone, the Gopro batteries and two 18650's for the UK lights I brought along an Anker 4-port wall charger. This saved me from having to keep track of a variety of separate chargers and finding available outlets around the room. I had an out-of-the-way spot where I just plugged everything in knew I had everything when I left.

+1 on managing power.

GoPro batteries suck. Switching GoPro batteries sucks. This is exacerbated when you're tired and hot from hiking.

I used GoPro mount to mount a USB battery pack onto the back of my treking pole (also had my GP mounted to the pole). I used a small USB cable to keep the GP constantly charged via the battery pack. This worked incredibly well but was clumsy.

I finally broke down and purchased an extended battery for the GP. This is not the exact one I bought but it's similar. This battery is bigger than the GP itself and comes with a new backdoor.

I very much like this extended battery. It lasts all day without issue and I can charge it at night when I get to camp using the USB battery pack.

Whatever you do, and however you power the GP, have a great time!

I am replacing my battery today. It should be here from Amazon. It's a direct drop in replacement with the Thermistor (yellow) wire. It's slightly a bigger capacity so it should work.

The original battery is a 3.7v 1050 Mah Li-ion.The replacement I found is for a baby monitor.. It is a a 3.7v 1200mah. You only need to match the voltage. I am hoping that the charge circuit on the battery is compatible. We will see. The size of the battery is perfect.. $9 for 2 batteries. I did email the company, but I am sure they won't sell me a battery because it's not sold on their site in the first place, so I went ahead and got this one. Fingers crossed.

Make sure you buy this type that replaces the whole battery like I have linked. Not the kind that adds on by clamping to the back with the original battery installed. I found that style totally unreliable.
