Most likely because it is a shovel.

Titanium Pot - 28 oz savings ($35)

Drop The mug, just use your pot - 4 oz savings (free)

Trowel instead of shovel - 16 oz savings ($20)

Drop the solar panel (doesn't really work well on the move) - 10-ish savings (free)

Sawyer Squeeze instead of Katadyn - 8 oz savings ($30)

Dance Pants instead of packed pants - 14 oz saved ($18) although you probably dont need these since you're wearing zip off pants

I would add a puffy to your clothing, it will get pretty cold - 10 oz gained (can be found on sale for $40)

Leave the extra shirts at home - 12 oz saved (free)

Just bring one extra payer of underwear and socks - 6 oz saved (free)

Leave campshoes at home - 23 oz saved (free)

I really don't know what the survival kit contains, but it can probably be paired down or eliminated

Don't know what the carabiners are for if you're hanging stuff outside your pack you're bringing too much - 4 oz saved (free)

Don't know what the tarp is for the sierras, you already have a tent

125 oz saved or almost 8 pounds. Coming in at a cost around $150.

I would start here and then look at replacing your bigger items. The easiest one to save the most weight would be your pack.

Hope this helps!

For a dose of irony, here's the less functional American knockoff.

PS I have genuine respect for our honorable military forces, and am sure I'll be corrected about how our shovel is superior.

Here it is, get your secret Santa on $80 on Amazon

u/meatheadvegan · 11 pointsr/Pikabu

https://www.amazon.com/Annihilate-Tactical-Military-Folding-Multifunction/dp/B07GQPZ8DN тут стоит, как обычная тактическая хуйня. Чуть больше 200 бачей.

u/Day_Bow_Bow · 9 pointsr/gadgets

Amazon has them. You can probably find them cheaper elsewhere though. These have been around for a while.

I'm new here, and correct me if I'm wrong, but you could really use a good shovel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzpRh-ZE9Mo

http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Military-Shovel-Emergency-WJQ-308/dp/B00A2GLZS8

Amazing pack though, and great documentation. You have my vote.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just re-checked the Google spreadsheet. You already have a U-Dig-It Folding Shovel and Pouch. Man, what didn't you think of?

u/NotMilitaryAI · 8 pointsr/BeAmazed

Here is the exact same model on Amazon. You can see the brand name of the tool in the top right of OP's video (Zune Lotoo).

The exact same video is posted on the Amazon page. There are no missing segments from the video that OP posted and there is no indication whatsoever that any part of the shovel blade is detachable.

u/sidewinderduck · 6 pointsr/motocamping

If I feel I need one, I prefer an ultralight trowel, like this. $3 ($8 with shipping in link), small, flat and only 2 oz. Here is one that ships free with prime.

u/quillpill · 6 pointsr/Survival

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A2GLZS8

I don't own one yet, but it is by far the best one I've found from researching.

u/adifferentmike · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Do you mean for getting snow off the car? Or if you get stuck? If the latter, an e-tool is for you!

https://www.amazon.com/Military-Original-Issue-Entrenching-Shovel/dp/B004SOPJG4

I mean, I guess it'll get snow off your car if you don't care about your paint...

Edit... I just now saw the part about the walking path. Well shoot, get an e-tool anyways!

u/aussie_jason · 5 pointsr/CampingandHiking

An e-tool is too bulky/heavy for backpacking, for that get something like this and for car camping just take a regular shovel if you need it for some reason (I carry one as I drive off-road to get to camp).

u/SandraSickfuck · 5 pointsr/learnprogramming

Don't buy it here ! Here's a 50$ one perfect for bludgeroning people on the head ! 123$ for a shovel is a total rip-off !

u/cwcoleman · 5 pointsr/CampingGear

What price range are you looking for? Do your parents generally spend over $100 on your for gifts?

All of this is stored in the trunk of my Jeep strapped down in the black tote pictured. I didn't get all of these things at Amazon, but tried to find a link to purchase everything.

Not pictured is a rollbar mounted fire extinguisher

This isn't specifically for camping, just what I have on me at all times.

I know your comment is in jest, but the American one actually you use as a sit down toilet. It has a hole to poop through while sitting down and doing everything else except opening cans. Or pulling nails. Or hammering. But you can poop. And fold it into a small backpack size.

The Glock E-tool is my favorite one. If you are ever planning on moving around or carrying it on you, weight for stuff like this is something most folks don't think about, and it adds up fast. The Glock weighs a mere 26 oz, a fraction of the weight of its competitors. It also has a saw and a hollow handle for storing things.

Glock was able to save significant weight by using the stamp shape to stiffen the end product, using a thinner gauge steel, using hardened and WELL tempered carbon steel instead of the pig-iron that most e-tools are made of, and finally using composite polymer in place of the wood or steel usually employed for the handle. Its durable, not too pricey, and ultralightweight.

SOG Entrenching Tool F08-N - Folding Shovel, High Carbon Steel

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0038A05X6/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_ib8Kyb5SCR12B

Similar to the style used in the army. Any folding style like this. You can unfold it into an L shape to use it as a hoe or as a seat (to rest a cheek on when doing your "business" in the woods. Or just use it straight like a normal shovel the it folds into a small package about the size of a thick notebook for hauling.

u/Gullex · 3 pointsr/Bushcraft

Back when I was trying to choose a good shovel it was a debate between the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel and the Chinese Military Issue shovel.

I ended up going with the Cold Steel version for a couple reasons: one, price. I just can't justify spending almost $100 on a shovel. Two, complexity. The Cold Steel version is simple, extremely rugged, lightweight, and just works. It's tough as hell, does the job it's supposed to do, and I really have no complaints. It's based off the Russian Spetsnaz shovel. The Chinese version just looks like it's too complex for its own good.

I'd really recommend the Cold Steel one unless you have a lot of disposable income and don't mind the problem inherent to more moving parts.

Other options include the Glock entrenching tool, the popular SOG entrenching tool and the US Military entrenching tool.

I'd still recommend Cold Steel's offering over all of these.

Amazon. Tactical shovels come in many different forms of badass, so the price can range anywhere from 35 - 300 US Dollars. Here's a link to one I highly recommend, which is the one features in the post. It's a little pricy, but I'm sure it's worth it.

If you're looking at foldable shovels, I'd check out the Chinese Military issue one here ---> http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Military-Shovel-Emergency-WJQ-308/dp/B00A2GLZS8

The Wirecutter just did an in-depth review on (full-sized) shovels which I would recommend over a small folding one if you have the space. If you really don't have the space, this one on Amazon comes well reviewed and is military issue

Entrenching shovel

not bad, but it isn't gonna really help you with many things like field skinning game...and clumsy for many other things.

u/Letcherouss · 2 pointsr/preppers

When you said tactical shovel my first thought was the good ol' E-Tool. That thing is tough to open sometimes but I don't think I've ever seen someone say that theirs broke. But it doesn't fall into

>plenty of tools and is longer than 3 feet or 91.44 cm I'm tall and short shovels are awkward

It's the only one I've ever used so I can't offer any other first hand suggestion :(

u/spinuzer · 2 pointsr/Jeep

If its a Wrangler and you have decent tires - ie Semi Aggressive All Terrains or Light Truck Tires and 31+ inches, I wouldn't even bother unless you really feel a lot of resistance. Pure road tires, definitely air down. On my LJ I have, it's stock with 31" Semi Aggressive AT tires and I almost never aired down in the 13 years I owned it. It's seen I don't know how many beach miles up and down the east coast. There was noticeable difference when I did air down though (less throttle needed, ran cooler), but it still did fine. If you do air down, about 15-18 PSI is where you want it, much lower and you risk the tire falling off the rim.

With the new Jeep in the pic, I didn't air down at all, the 35" tires treated the beach like it wasn't there. They were at 40 PSI and I will likely never air them down for the beach again. I probably could have gotten out there in 2WD on it's current setup.

Beach driving has a lot more to do with momentum management than most other factors. Airing down just helps that little bit more. If you are in loose sand, don't stop, keep it moving at a steady pace or even give it more speed before you hit the loose sand. That's the biggest factor when I watch people get stuck. They panic and slow down instead of keeping the vehicle moving. There is a really soft and torn up section where it's a turn to get to the ocean front and it's where everyone gets stuck cause they take it too slow and stop the car in the horribly loose sand, I pull people out of there all the time.

Some other Tips

  • Bring a Shovel - useful for digging out - mostly to help non jeep owners get out ;) - I use a surplus army one but something like this - https://www.amazon.com/SOG-Entrenching-Tool-F08-N-Folding/dp/B0038A05X6/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1494981775&sr=1-1&keywords=folding+shovel
  • one or two 2x6 boards 2-3 feet long - useful to put in front of tires to provide traction and lift the Jeep if you bog in the sand - also if you need to jack the Jeep for any reason it provides a platform. - Acquired at any Hardware store
  • If you start to get stuck and are throwing sand/digging yourself in - STOP - Get out and assess your predicament. It's a lot easier to stick the boards in front of the tires when you aren't in sand up to your chassis. The deeper you go, the more sand YOU have to move out of the way.
  • No winch would be needed, a tow strap is fine - I have spent summers with my tow strap pulling people out of the sand with the stock tow hooks on the front and back - https://www.amazon.com/Grip-Heavy-Duty-Tow-Strap/dp/B000I60HV8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1494981378&sr=8-5&keywords=tow+strap - $22 and great piece of mind - I don't use any metal hooks or d rings, it works fine without them for the beach
  • If it's somewhat popular beach and you do get stuck, most any other Jeep owner would help you out. I do it all summer long for anyone I see stuck. It's actually a lot of fun to help recover vehicles and to see the look on peoples faces when they are relieved about what they are going to do. Don't be embarrassed about it, own it and learn from it, gotta get better somehow.
  • Wash the undercarriage when you are done. The salt and sand will quickly rot you out.

Trust me, it's not too difficult. Keep your momentum, if you do start to get stuck, don't make it worse, get out and use your tools to get you out or ask for help.

Good luck! If you have other questions, id be glad to answer, PM me :) I expect to see pics!

I like how they spent the first minute or so showing us how it works as a shovel. I'm thinking they could have skipped that bit, or at least shortened it.

I prefer the 78 (plain back) aesthetically, but the 81 (saw back) is still a fine knife.

The saw does actually work for its intended purpose: it is a "root saw" for use in digging battle trenches. I have (peacefully) sawed roots with it.

It's Very unlikely that Glock, of all companies, would do something just for looks…("weird" colors notwithstanding)

Glock also makes an entrenching tool:

Why not just get one of these and stuff it under a seat or something?

u/SubcommanderMarcos · 2 pointsr/MilitaryPorn

I've actually been thinking that my truck needs a shovel... Hmm, wonder if I can find a way to get my hands on one o' them chinese supersholvels

e: oh hey

Fuck that's a lot for a shovel though. I'd have to spend on shipping too...

e2: No shipping here :D

u/MCubb · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You should definitely get a folding shovel!

u/RanTheRedCedar · 2 pointsr/OkCupid

I'm like 3 miles away.

And I could use the money for my house fund. That would be very helpful for refurbishing all these 1920s houses I'm looking at...

Unfortunately the only thing I have in my car that can put you out of your misery is this.

You game?

u/pranksterturtle · 2 pointsr/zombies

I think the SOG shovel is just a knockoff of the standard entrenching tool. I can't see carrying around that much weight (3 lbs?!) just to have a crappy shovel with dubious head-detaching abilities -- I'd stick with something purpose-built for the task. If I'm just using the shovel to bury my shit anyway, I'll grab one of these.

u/daxelkurtz · 2 pointsr/bicycletouring

-lockin'

I carry a thin cable lock at all times, just enough to prevent a grab-and-dash. It also secures my panniers to my frame.

-washin'

I am a big ol' sweaty sweatball, and so I have real trouble going a day without proper cleaning. Unless I know there's a bathable lake or river, I have to take a room or equipped camp-site.

-poopin'

Yep, carry TP everywhere. Also, be a bro and carry a camp trowel - like [this aluminum jobbie] (http://www.amazon.com/TentLab-Spades-Trowel-Assort-DOS-FCM25/dp/B00UTK5HJ0/ref=lp_3400921_1_11?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1452468473&sr=1-11) or [this plastic doodah] (http://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-8408-Backpackers-Trowel/dp/B000BS05Z6/ref=lp_3400921_1_4?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1452468473&sr=1-4)

u/BlueEyedReaper · 2 pointsr/BeAmazed

If a ninja is six hours late then yes. If he absolutely wants a multi tool one, the FSDUALWIN one available on amazon (not sure where else) has good reviews though it is known for a bad compass, test the compass. Also you need to make sure to slightly twist it while scooping to keep it from coming apart as it is screwed in. Not optimal for shovel, but if you are looking for an emergency kit with a shovel in case you need it, it is perfect.

If he needs a shovel specifically, put the extra money in for a Glock E-Tool or the USGI.

Anything made in Oregon. This is a bit of a stretch but bear with me. The Bourne Triology preceeds The Bournce Legacy. Which starred Edward Norton who also starred in Fight Club. A movie based off the book who was written by none other than Chuck Palahniuk who is from Oregon & resides there.

I'll be back to finish this!

The manliest thing I have is probably the survival shovel with pick. Mostly because you use it to shit in the woods which I'm pretty sure is the epitome of manliness when you can't grow a beard.

u/dotMJEG · 2 pointsr/flashlight

It's also distinctly not-Chinese like in that it's one of the most expensive, I love mine though, tons of applications and quite sturdy.

I would've linked the actual shovel, but I'm not 100% sure which one it is. It's either this one for $256 and 1-star or this one for $460 and 5-stars

swiss army knives are sooo 1900s, Gerber multi-tools are better, the tools lock.

Also, military entrenching tools are designed to be used as knives, so you can cut rope, and they are heavy enough to be used as a hammer. I've used them as a small hatchet as well.(cutting up small bits of kindling for a fire).

u/doomrabbit · 1 pointr/preppers

I recommend adding an entrenching tool to your trunk for moving snow in slide-off conditions from in front of your tires. Also can chip ice in parking lots or driveways if stuck.

Add cheap work gloves in case you normally wear decent gloves which you don't want to mess up.

More for comfort, but hand warmers are cheap on Amazon and can add comfort if the shovel fails.

u/modern_rabbit · 1 pointr/preppers

Helonix Chair Zero is really nice if you have an extra 100 bucks rattling about in your pocket. Or just use a rock or a log. If you get one, be sure to get the footprint for it if you are camping on loose soil.

You also should bring a small trowel for when nature calls.

u/deweyredman · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Ivanka Trump. Compounding the fact that her Dad is insanely rich with missing white woman syndrome, she (and by default I) would be rescued in no time.

Multi purpose survival multitool to make the short wait time bearable.

>Then you provide a list of things that are not in your pack that would be more useful than the gun.

But those things I listed are in my pack, or strapped to it. Bear Canister, trauma/first aid kit, shovel, and a sleeping bag in a trash bag in a waterproof stuff sack mounted on the outside of my pack.

>and your pack isn't full... so why not add those things?

But my pack is full. It's a nice balance of mass and volume. I add what I need based on Probability. I carry a rattlesnake bite kit if I'm going into areas with rattlesnakes, but if I'm heading up to an alpine lake, then the snakebite kit stays and extra layers / emergency blankets are added. It's all about the probability of what you will face. Twenty-five years ago, when hiking in north Alabama, I carried a .357 because of the freaking crazies that inhabit the Sand Mountain area. Had to pull it once, too when I was threatened by a drunk.

>Lastly, we'll probably have to just accept that we have different definitions for "lightweight"... a loaded LC9 weighs as much as my shelter. It would be the heaviest piece of gear in my entire pack.

That's an understatement. I enjoy carting around 40#. Any more than that becomes a problem for my ankles.

The closest thing I can think of would be a Glock ET. They're damn near indestructible. There's a root saw that comes out of the hilt of the shovel. Not quite and axe but you I use mine to split wood and it works fine. Great locking mechanism on it.

2.) Apparently, the Lynx is native to the Pacific Northwest. Huh.

That is pretty much just a trench shovel. Keep in mind that they are very small. This thing is more a a hatchet than an axe.

I mentioned a folding shovel. I was planning to use the Mylar blankets as mini tarps, but I really don't see the use of a tarp in my situation. As for communication I have a red cross radio, a cell phone, a whistle, and I'm planning on getting a personal locator beacon. I was planning on using a Datexx crank generator, in addition to the Mophie powerstaion XL, but I'm thinking of getting a radio that has a built in solar panel/crank generator.

I have never used one of their e-tools. Actually, I've never used an e-tool. They're kind of overkill for my purposes. That isn't actual military surplus if that's what you are asking, though that doesn't necessarily mean it's not just as good or better. SOG has a reputation as being ok, but nothing special. I don't know what the U.S. Military actually uses. I know glock has been making e-tools for the Austrians for since longer than they have been making guns. Those are supposed to be nice, but like I've said I've never shopped around.

This is what I use. Or something equivalent.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FXY86Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1422559616&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=5173WBEEwjL&ref=plSrch

It's light, handy, and durable. But then, I'm not trying to dig trenches or fox holes. I only need to dig the occasional cat hole or fire pit. That kind of thing. I don't want something military, I just want a decent lightweight dig-a-john.

My previous comments were just speaking generally about surplus stores. Not all of their stuff is actually military. A lot of it is just military style, or generic camping gear. Again, that's not always a bad thing, you just need to know what you are getting. There are also a lot of companies that make reproductions of military gear, but it's actually cheap Chinese crap that just looks like surplus gear. Or there are companies that make military style gear that's actually just as good. You've just got to know what you're buying. Just because it's in a surplus store doesn't actually mean that it's actually military surplus.
