My wife's new car has CarPlay/AndroidAuto and I got jealous of having Google Maps in her car. Upgraded my stereo to a Pioneer AVH-4400NEX and realized it has an HDMI port on the back. You will be sorely disappointed with the audio quality and overall build quality of it, good radios start at about $80, and you want reliable bluetooth.
I spent $100 on a Kenwood for my Honda and the bluetooth is fucking terrible, it takes ages to connect. I can safely say I have wasted multiple days of my life getting the god damned bluetooth to work. Otherwise, it sounds fantastic.
Best inexpensive radio brand? Pioneer. this guy is a fucking deal.
For a 99 Mustang, you also will need a handful of accessories to install it, including:
Ford radio removal tools
a Dash adapter kit (because the radio is a different size than stock)
and a wiring harness kit (This only works if you don't have premium or Mach audio)
The harness kit will make it easy to wire it up on your kitchen table, all of the wires are color coded to match the wiring harness the Pioneer radio will come with, once you crimp or solder your connections and heat string or electrical tape them, install will be as simple as "plug and play"
The issue you run into with cheap radios is poor advertising of wattage or power output. I promise that $30 radio doesn't put out 50w x 4. Probably more like 1/4 of that, this will make your music sound like total utter shit.
To play it like a regular bluetooth aux you need:

It's expensive, but god damn, it's the best thing out there right now for head units. Also it's has super easy pop-out ant-theft screen, for easily removing it for when you park. (Parts of downtown St. Louis are really ghetto/risky to park)

I did this for an ex's car as a present.
Basically, fuck the cassette adapter. This is cheaper, as permanent as you want it, and better. No scratchy feedback.
Install an aux port in your car.
The head unit (basically stereo control panel) pops out, and you can plug this into the back. Empty spot? Plug there. You might have to give up one of your inputs (unplug the cassette plug w/e you want).

I've bought 3 of these so far I love it. It has Android Auto & Apple Carplay for those people who refuse to switch to android. It makes my shitty stock speakers sound really good.

Recently swapped my App Radio 4 for this and couldn't be happier. It's only crashed on me once, and when it did it restarted CarPlay itself unlike my app radio which would need the car to be restarted for it to work agin.
I replaced the default stereo in my 2018 XLE with this stereo on Amazon because it has Wireless Apple CarPlay.
I wouldn't recommend Boss products at all, I currently have a Pioneer FH-X700BT (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-FH-X700BT-In-Dash-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B0091UW7F6) and it's currently on sale on Amazon for cheaper than your price range.
It would be difficult to find a proper headunit with a cassette, but i can give you a few items to go by.
Headunit - DEH-150mp
(dash kit, wiring harness and antenna adapter of course)
keeping budget in mind, and that that car has 4 4x8 sized speakers, i would get two sets of these adaptors to allow for 5.25 speakers.
I personally use 2 sets of Polk db522
and for the money they sound decent.
You could leave it like that and it would be enjoyable or you can go the extra step and get something like a RF4 channel amp, with amp install kit and be right around your 500 mark.
Keep in mind that i am far from an expert. Just wanted to give you a direction.
But you are wanting to hack / mod your stock radio to add aux in? Adding a new after market radio is a no brainier.
They will have everything you need at walmart or best buy. If you buy from crutchfield they will include everything you need.

The cheapest setup would be to get a basic headunit like this for $55.
If you want a subwoofer your options vary depending on what will fit behind the seat, but the rear outputs from the headunit can be used to power a 2 ohm subwoofer with 70 watts (according to Pioneer) so you can get by without an external amp. If you choose to go this route you'll have to run all 4 stock speakers from the front two channels, though.

This hu features everything you want except nav will be handled by your phone through android auto (better nav anyway). You'll also get a lot better sound out of a quality hu. It's $450 currently but I'm sure sure can find one for like $350 on ebay (probably no warranty on ebay). Hu are one of those things that you keep for years, you may be saving a couple bucks now but you're gonna regret it when it breaks eventually.

You're not going to find a double-din in your budget, unless it was already stolen from another vehicle.
If you're concerned about theft, you can cover over the manufacturer name or other identifying text with some black electrical tape to further camouflage it.
Dash kit is there, doesn't look too damaged, you should be able to cage mount a new radio.
No antenna adapter required (thanks Honda!) For reference, antenna is the silver end with foam wrapped around the wire shown in pic 2. It will just plug into any new radio.
The red RCA you show in picture 2 should have a white or black one attached too (they come in pairs) I can see the same cable tucked behind the support in picture 3, so I'm guessing it's just jammed away in there somewhere. That would be the subwoofer signal line (or go to an EQ, not sure what you had in addition to the radio/speakers).
The most important part, the harness to the car, isn't shown in any of these pictures. Picture 3 shows the wires in a bundle on the right side (under the yellow plug), but I don't see the end. It looks like this. If you have that, all you need is Metra part no. 70-1721 to plug in and give you all the wires for a new radio. If it's cut off (just bare wires) you'll have to hardwire (but won't need any extra parts). Take a picture and reply with it and I can confirm what you need.
As for radios, you won't have a hard time finding a good quality $100 radio with aux and BT. I'm a pioneer fan, the deh-x6800bt is right in that budget.
I replaced the Deck in my '06 myself, I threw out the lameass cd player, and put in a pioneer bluetooth deck using an adaptor kit: Here's the 3 items you'll need. (note, you can also get double din adaptor kits, and waaaay better decks than the pioneer one I linked, I'm just being lazy) the parts will cost you $150 US, and if you don't want to install it yourself it'll cost another 100 or so for install at a car audio place. (I did it myself, just solder up the harness and google how to take your dash apart) (the entire audio deck portion of the dash is held in by 1 screw behind the central HVAC knob)

Most mid-upper level head units have the ability to plug in a backup camera. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a unit with Android Auto without a backup camera plug. Also, if it has Android Auto, you're guaranteed to have a USB port, as it's required, and all head units with the above mentioned features will most certainly have an aux input as well.
Also, I hear Crutchfield's customer service is top-notch. You should be able to give them a call with more specific questions.

The new practice for most B&M stores is to get the manufacturer to give them a "custom model" so they can get around the price match against Amazon. (Hence the 4200 vs 4201).
I'm technical, but have no experience taking apart my dashboard to get to the radio. I'm under the gun now, my girlfriends lease is up this month, and my car is never used, but she wants a backup camera, and for 700 bucks, it saves us 300 bucks a month.
I had about that budget to build the system in my 75 Lincoln. Here’s links to what I went with other than the sub which is an older Sony 10” in a box I bought used. I run the 4s and 6x9s off deck power and use a cheap amp for the sub. A better amp would be better of course but for my budget I like how this sounds. The kicker speakers have been great for the $$$ although the 4”/6x9 combo is a little high sounding because my car is so long. Your tracker shouldn’t be as bad given it’s not 19.6 feel long like my Lincoln. Haha. If you can fit bigger speakers up front I’d suggest doing so to pull some more mids out. This setup was around $400 and sounds pretty decent considering the price. The speakers aren’t on prime for they price so a little more $ would get them faster. Also don’t forget to budget in wiring as a kit and decent RCAs will raise the cost. Also, check local garage sale sites like on Facebook. People are often offloading stereo stuff when they need money. Just beware of stolen items :(

It's a Sony XAV-AX100 You'll need this Metra Kit to fit the new stereo. If you have a Bose system you'll either need to bypass the Amp or get a line level converter. I started with the line level converter, the sound is better than the stock system but still not great. I plan on getting a new amp and speakers eventually. I just wanted bluetooth and Android Auto to start.

I also installed 5.25's in front and 6.5's in the rear like u/Bageeka did, and can vouch that the sound difference is huge. Oddly enough i also used kickers, since they were like $34 at bestbuy. I also have a 2014 VW and the issue you've described has nothing to with the the phone, but is entirely the fault of VW. They neglected to support any of the Bluetooth profiles except A2DP, which is why it works so well when streaming.
I noticed this right away after purchasing the car and was really disappointed by how terrible the Bluetooth support is for the built-in receiver. For a moment I considered taking it back but my wife talked me down suggesting an after market receiver instead -- which I haven't purchased yet. In my previous vehicle, I had a $150 receiver and it was much better. Meanwhile, I'm stuck with this piece of crap.
MS seems to have tried to work around this by allowing us to call Cortana as a contact, but that doesn't always work for me either. I've noticed that I'll get an announcement for an incoming text message and it will drop off before completely reading the message or drop off before I can finish the reply. This might work better with Cyan though, I need to load it still.

Why would I get rid of that? Well, for starters. That Boss HU will freeze up, constantly. You have to cut power every single time it freezes up. Buddy of mine had a Boss HU and it froze constantly. As for the subs, I would knock those out simply because that amp will most likely cook them, it's not a bad amp, but those subs will not tolerate any clipping from that amp, they'll blow.

You won't be happy with the Boss HU or the Boss subs.
There are better options out there, but I see you're on a budget. I have ran the newer Cerwin-Vega woofers and they won't disappoint. I seen you have shallow mount enclosures, and had to jump on those. Good price, and they work DAMN well, very efficient woofers with decent SQ.
As for the price, just a little more than what you were willing to spend for a hell of a lot better quality.
Just one more thing. You most likely won't need dynomat for a system like this, but it helps. If you already have bad road noise, then get some. If it were me, I would just spend the extra money on the deck and subs I listed. As for the enclosure, I don't know the specs, but those subs I listed work nicely in most of whatever you're going to throw them in.

ok, so looking into it they aren't necessarily audiophile features, but they are still completley unnecessary for someone who just wants something to give them a few modern conveniences (like an AUX jack and bluetooth for example) and not much else (for example, GPS navigation, or a touch screen, both not necessary whatsoever for a good quality head unit)
in fact, looking at amazon now, even around $80 seems to be a bit on the high side for a decent head unit, as i'm seeing pretty good quality ones for around $50-$60 on amazon

FM modulator will let them use the stock radio and get an aux in. They'll use it the same as a transmitter (turn to the station it's set to, flip a switch if it's needed, play away).

I'd say a simple radio would be something like the Pioneer DEH-150MP or Kenwood KDC-155. Those'll give them an aux in and CD player while keeping it pretty simple since there's no bells and whistles. The pioneer is $60, at best buy, not including parts and labor.

Works just dandy. It's plugged into my 4 port USB charger (for power) and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable plugs into my AUX input. It's not for calls, etc, just for audio out.
If you want to actually mirror your screen, you need this with a radio that accepts HDMI. Carplay is similar to mirroring, there's plenty of youtube videos that demonstrates what it's about, a lot more limited than mirroring though. I don't personally use it but the Kenwood DDX9703S is a beautiful radio, if you want a cheaper radio though this Pioneer is neat as well.

Nice! Since its in a cabinet, and its a single DIN, you should be able to find some great options for great prices. Probably so many options it will be hard to narrow them down! If you want built in Bluetooth, you will probably find lots of good options from good brand names for around $99. If you don't want built in Bluetooth, you can probably find nice options for more like $70.
I've had good luck with Sony stuff for the last few years, so I think you would probably be very happy with something like this. It comes with Bluetooth built in, and also with it's own remote for volume and basic functions. Of course there are tons of other great models and brands out there, so I don't mean to say this is the only way to go. If there is something else you find that you like more, feel free to post it here and I'll look it over for you.

Edit: If you think you might someday upgrade your stock speakers, and there is room in your budget, this high powered version might be worth the extra money. But if you were happy with the sound of the original stock radio, I would not bother.

I have a BlackVue DR550GW-2CH as a dashcam (I have it for around 4 years, installed originally in another 2 cars).
Intsun Vehicle Rear View Monitor (you clip it to your rear view mirror) cost me $20-25 in Amazon (it has 2 video inputs but I am using one). This works by detecting video signal on the channel and turning it on. You hook the backup camera to the reverse lights in order to show up every time you go in reverse.

My GF's 2013 Scion FR-S got a DR650GW-2CH as a dashcam and a Pioneer AVH-280BT ($180) and a $15 backup camera that looks like the OEM for the car.
Works great too but the wiring on that is a little difficult. It needs to be wire to the fuse box.
Pretty happy with the result.

if you don't care about power ratings and just want bluetooth/usb, Amazon has a Boss radio they sell for $22 with instant coupon Partner this with a $4 wiring kit and you have bluetooth/usb jams for under $30.
Im sure I will get some audio guys downvoting me for recommending an off brand radio, but after using some of Boss' stuff, I can say its hand on heart a decent alternative to the big guys, they sound pretty good and the cost is really low.
Boss even has a couple of decent double din touch screens for under $100, or if you want to go super cheap, Amazon Prime days has a few of the off brand Chinese double dins for under $50 that get extremely good reviews, and typically have the benefit of being able to mirror your smart phone screen and/or play movies. I currently have this guy in my Honda Civic, and it powers the factory speakers better than the original radio, plus it supports Apple Car play, which $160 is a killer deal to be able to modernize any older car with this feature.

I'm rolling on a 2017 STI base and from all the research I did when I was looking into making my sound system not sound like garbage in my car, seems the general consensus has been that these cars all have terrible head units, the stock speakers actually aren't bad (the head unit is just that bad that it makes them sound bad), and that the subaru kicker speakers are far too much money for what they deliver.
Oem audio plus even keeps the stock speakers in their solution. They do replace the tweeters though and obviously add a sub.
A simple under seat subwoofer seems a far better value to get bass into the system. You can even get a kicker for $200.
I'd ultimately suggest replacing the head unit along with getting a simple under seat subwoofer for an more even and overall solution.
I went with the Pioneer 4200NEX and a Cerwin-Vega under seat subwoofer.
Sounds pretty damn good and I now have android auto (and apple carplay if you're into that).

Oh goodie, so that's basically the easiest possible combination. (I was asking about steering wheel controls and subwoofers because you'd need even more adapters for those. And auto climate control makes the din kit a pain in the ass, you gotta import it from Japan. But yours looks like a base model without any of that.)

Crutchfield also has some good resources. The only thing is that the aux port under the palm rest won't work anymore, unless you can find a way to adapt it to the new stereo. Many new stereos don't even support aux anymore. Also the Sony I mentioned (probably amongst others) has a USB port hanging off the back, so you'll need to get a USB extension and run it to somewhere in the car. Like drill a hole somewhere in the center console and run the cable up.

I'm hoping to beat the subs down to about $150-160. The RF amp is sold, but this Lightning Audio amp isn't. Reference page for that amp, 1200 watt, 4 channel. Should be plenty to handle those subs. Still looking at the same Pioneer head unit at this point tho, but now brand new and slightly cheaper.
I would just get an fm modulator or swap for aftermarket. A decent radio is less than $75.
You're gonna get a lot of hate for the brands you have there. You really get what you pay for with car audio and that amplifier is more likely to set your car on fire than it is to power those subs. As far as that head unit go with something like this instead.
I don’t suggest an FM transmitter. I used one for the past 2 years and you lose a lot of quality and sometimes they cut in/out, get static, etc.
Just get a new stereo. Here is an example of a unit under $50. Go through crutchfield.com and get the wiring harness and dash kit for free or discounted (it was free for my car)
If you can follow simple instructions (sent from crutchfield for your exact car) and you know how to match colors together you can install it yourself.
Install it yourself, it's not difficult if you can use a screwdriver and wrench.
I'm sure you can get something cheap off of eBay or Craigslist. If you buy new, stick with major brands at least like Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, JVC, etc. Do not buy little off brands, they're not worth the savings as they tend to fail more often and/or sound like ass.
This Pioneer would probably serve you well.
Edit: Stay away from Best Buy and big box chains. They are known to mess up good equipment :( If you want to have it installed, find a local car audio shop that is reputable

I have used This one for about 2 years with no real issues. I have it connected to USB so it automatically turns on when the car turns on and for the most part my phone will automatically connect to it if Bluetooth is on. While playing the audio is great. If it's on and I have I connected and I'm not playing anything and my car audio is up kinda high, you can hear a little electromagnetic interference like a slight buzz and tick but that may be dirty power from my car so your mileage may vary, but it's fine, once you start playing something it totally goes away. My cigarette lighter is in the arm rest in between the 2 front seats so it stays hidden away.

This one is drastically better for me, but it's unfortunate that you lose the play/pause functionality.
I use this in my 2011 Outback. Works great. Unlike most the ones on Amazon it powers off with the car and doesn't have an internal battery, so it always connects back up automatically without fail. Only time I've had problems is if I toggle airplane mode on my phone, then I have to unplug it and plug it back in.

It has nfc, auto-connect, etc and although some vehicles need a ground loop isolator mine doesn't because It's an oldish jeep and I'm playing through a cassette adapter. The avantree thing sounds nice.
Bought this about four years ago, paired it, put it in my center console and forgot it was there until a few weeks ago when the power cord stopped working.
For a second, I thought it was my cars Bluetooth that stopped working, and then I realized my car doesn't have Bluetooth.
Spend a couple of extra bucks and you'll appreciate the convenience.

My car doesn't have bluetooth but it had a usb and aux port right next to one another in the arm rest and this way is hidden from sight in my case.
So I get your point, its frustrating when stuff doesn't work right. But have you tried the cable they are telling you that you need? If they tell you thats what it is, then tell them to get one and test it out before you pay for it. Seems pretty straight forward right?
For what its worth, I find these factory stereos to be so useless with tech. I had a VW that constantly froze on the Navigation screen if I had a phone call come in, and a Jeep that liked to randomly reject my phone too. For my Mini, I just bought a $10 Bluetooth adaptor off of Amazon, it plugs into the USB and a 3.5mm cord that's like 2 inches long from it plugs into the 3.5 port beside the USB. Bam, I put my phone in a cradle that is on the dash and I have instant Nav/Google Play/Android Auto/Music/ whatever without the bullshit or cords. Its like a nav screen, only I didnt have to pay like $2 grand for it. I get in my car and it instantly connects, every time.
Also just so you know, you might as well go out in your backyard and set your money on fire if you want to go the lawyer route. Again I get where you are coming from, and yes it should work, but they'll just blame it on the phone and theres no way you can prove its not the phones fault. If you read the fine print in your manual I bet it has language thats something along the lines of, "...will work with compatible smartphones," or something to that effect. All they have to do is say they dont guarantee compatibility with every phone and you are up shit creek.

iphone and the iBooks app. Bluetooth headphones is a must. I can work out forever listening to a book. I listened to tom clancy red rabbit this morning for a 40 minute gym session.
I understand you don't like to bring your phone to the gym, but for me it's all about the convenience of one device. I don't even use my point and shoot camera anymore for the same reason, too many devices is too troublesome. Then you have to charge all the separate devices too. Same with my old trusty mp3 player, in college it was great but the phone does it all and more. Then when I get in my car, the phone connects to my cheapo bluetooth adapter and my phone keeps playing the same book. And believe me, if my phone had wireless earphones somehow, you bet I'd stop using the other one I have in a heartbeat.

This, an off the shelf USB lighter adaptor and a cassette adapter make any car with a cassette player bluetooth capable for under $15. I don't have any regrets.
Without iDrive there is no audio over Bluetooth. You'll need a Bluetooth adapter. That particular one is powered by USB and then plugs in the AUX jack under the armrest. Just set your head unit to AUX and you're good to go. I've been using one since October of '17 and it works great.
You won't have steering wheel controls but in order to get that functionality you'd have to shell out close to $100 for a different model that's made specifically for BMWs.

If you're using a 12 V line you'll have to regulate it down to 5V, which isn't a huge deal except if you hunt around on the stereo board you're bound to find a 5V line somewhere to tap into. Godspeed!
Amazon has these that's usb powered. I have one for my older Kenwood head unit, it has a usb slot right next to the aux port, so it's perfect.
So the only caveat is that it doesn't route phone calls to the aux port from my HTC M8, just media audio.

I bought my Pioneer AppRadio 4 off Amazon. (SPH-DA120) it is CarPlay enabled. I really like it but would recommend you also get a matte screen protector for it as well or else the fingerprints get pretty bad. (I had to wipe mine off daily with my OCD)

All I'm saying is, I'm more tolerant of people who decide to wait to look at their phone when at a stop light. if i could tip you in a bit, before i even noticed that only one channel was working, i was usually doing highway driving, going over 60, and with a softtop, it was always alot of road noise. with that being said, i was usually always using my headunit at 44- 48 out of 50 on the volume. you think the crap was clipping and i burned out all 4 of the speakers.

Basically where the fuse is going for the Radio I was wondering if I could cut them off and have it go from the fuse box to the radio and put a 15 amp fuse in and get the same results.
The fuse box on the radio is supposed to be plugged directly to the battery for max power but the auxiliary fuse box will be plugged the same way.
If not that's fine I just wanted to make sure before I went and cut it out and I will just run a wire from the battery to the radio.

Here's a good head unit option that has plenty of power: Sony MEX-XB100BT - $150. I would recommend installing a 12 gauge power and ground lead ($15) for this head unit as it is more powerful than most.
They're great for how I use them. They are shorter in length so there is a little loss in range. They aren't bass heavy, mostly mid and upper. That's perfect for me since I have a sub to do the heavy lifting.
Full disclosure, I also have an amp in my deck that makes them louder than stock.

I installed this in my 01 Corolla a couple weeks ago. It fits in the stock mounting bracket and has AUX, BT and USB. All you will need to install it is this wiring harness, a set of crimp caps and a wire stripper/crimp tool.
The hardest part is wiring the new head unit to the wiring harness. The actual installation should take 10 minutes.

I just went through replacing with a modern radio this weekend. Had great success with a really shallow radio, no CD player. Fit nicely. I also did all the wiring so if you wanna install without and amp I can explain how I did it. Radio was maybe 80$ plus some small speakers.

I bought this one. I don't have any issues with it and it's also really small. My car is too loud to really hear the speakers though.
You might want to look at this guy as well, as he has backup / aux / usb inputs but also bluetooth which I have found to be immensely useful for the car. No fucking around with wires I just switch to BT and have my whole spotify library ready to go, and then I have a thumbstick with 15gb of music on the usb that just stays in the car all the time for roadtrips.
That kit would definitely work for your wiring though, although you can easily route a cable up into the glovebox and just leave a usb in there if you decided to go the bluetooth route.
Keep in mind you'll need a wiring kit for the rsx and a dash kit to get the double din to fit with different trim.
Crutchfield is overpriced. You can use them to see what is out there, but use Amazon. Pioneer usually is inexpensive, and has everything you are looking for.

I just called my local Best Buy, they set me up with a harness and din adapter no issues. Keep in mind when changing your receiver you will lose likely the door mounted speakers and your steering wheel controls. I didn't mind as I got a way better set up for a little over $200

You can get a decent bluetooth/USB capable head unit for about $30. That's what you'd spend on a FM transmitter at Best Buy. Installation is not difficult and any reasonably popular car will have a walk-through on YouTube.
The only downside I see is the lack of saved radio stations. Can you cycle through them with only the headunit? As I understand, an app would be required.

For the head unit I used a Pioneer 4200nex (this head unit is pretty much the same as the 8200nex(which is the top of the line head unit) but without the navigation. There really isn't a need for that feature since this head unit supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play, they both use their own maps)
For the dash kit I used the ADS MUS1 Radio Installation Kit (if you decide to go with this kit, the wire harness is already included inside the box)
Then I used the iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR module so they would all communicate with each other, that also took care of the A/C, steering wheel controls and will also connect to the ODB2.
I did not install this myself, but the installer told me that it wasn't too difficult, and it was his first time installing this kit/radio into a mustang.
I love it!!! It was worth the all the money I spent!

The backup camera has nothing to do with the radio in a gen2, but if you have nav and/or the JBL audio system you need the interface adaptor. Mine already came with the interface wired in, but the aftermarket deck that was put in it didn't have Bluetooth, so I swapped the deck I'd bought for my Corolla with the one that came in the Prius.

Their is a 6 inch Sony head unit that comes with apple car play, android stuff with all the buttons on the bottom. We had it in our 07XT as well as our 2016 cross trek. Best one there is atm. If you can wait till December there is another one coming out from Sony but it's double the price. It's easy to install and it's a 3 inch larger display. You can move it in all directions to where you want to see it when installed. It's the Sony XAV-AX9000
Thats for the response. I am interested in a gauge because my car is modded and theres a few things that I want to monitor while driving. Its not a big deal as I can just link it up to my phone.

I'll throw in that I've had an 09 Corolla S with 5 speed stick and it has never had a single failure of any sort other than the manual transmission having a second to third synchro issue that I've learned to work around. But as most are automatics, even that wouldn't be a problem. I highly recommend the cars for reliability as long as they're properly maintained.

I got the Metra dash kit from Best Buy, you can get it cheaper on Amazon or eBay. And I got a Maestro adapter for the steering wheel hand controls. The stereo I have now has wireless Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android, it’s this Pioneer.
I hate all the add-on stuff
it always feels so shoddily tied together - mounts that fall off in the heat - power cords running around to plug in or trip over, etc.
I love consolidation. granted it means stuff ages out faster - but man - give me an android audio head unit and I'm a pretty happy camper - nav/backup cam/audio/android apps all on ONE screen and it's pretty up to date because its all streamed from my phone. no cords or extra stuff - looks factory in the stock dash.

If you have experience installing speakers in your car you could save some dough by doing them yourself but they’re not the easiest to install in the rear deck. You gotta remove a good amount of plastic to get to the two 6x9s and then there are two speakers in the rear seats as well that you need to remove the rear plastic. The front door speakers are easy but you gotta buy spacers for them. I bought a decent JVC one from crutchfield because it was a decent deal with speakers bundled. I think speakers plus head unit ran me just over $100. However, I then noticed the Blaupunkt Toronto on amazon for $12 and thought “why the hell not?” and ordered it too.
Installed the JVC speakers and the cheap head unit and I’m pretty satisfied. The screen on the head unit stopped working pretty much the same day I installed it, but I just wanted Bluetooth and a volume knob so it doesn’t bother me and I never bothered to get amazon to send me a replacement. Otherwise works great, connects to my phone quickly, etc.
Main reason I went this route is I don’t have to give a shit about it getting stolen, both because of the cost as well as I think it looks very much like a stock unit. I actually love how it looks compared to most aftermarket head units.

Yes, I used to own many of these things (including that one) before getting a aftermarket head unit. I've used cheaper plasticky looking ones too (sold on local gas stations for $5), and I can tell you that the quality of the signal you'll get depends more on the vehicle's ground isolation than the transmitter itself. It's a gamble, my car sounded excelent with this thing... almost no noise, my sister's car sounded like ass. Full of static and you had to crank up volume to the max. These transmitters are a temporal only solution. You'll get static from the speakers, sound quality won't be great, you might even hear taxis' CB radios from time to time (which was a lot of fun I won't lie. You could hear them and they could hear whatever you were playing).

Connect it to your USB port and AUX line in. After you've paired with it once, when you turn your car on it will power up and auto-connect to your phone.

It is the only one that reconnects automatically to your phone without the need to turn on manually; it requires a USB port and aux jack.
I was planning to sell my 2013 Fiat 500, but this gadget convinced me not to. Thousands of dollars saved.
Caveat - I do have a pay as you go chip on this android phone so that it refreshes traffic and selects the best route, but will work as a great Spotify deck if you park garage has a good wifi signal that allows the phone to download music.
BTW the receiver also works with my iPhone, so you can stream music from it.
My car has Bluetooth, I bought Bluetooth earbuds two years ago and never looked back to the audio jack. Wearing corded earbuds feels like being on a leash. Using the aux and the phone is a big spaghetti mess of cables on the shifter.

That's probably what this tape converter would cost, but a new receiver will sound 100 times better. Converting from digital to analog in that little tape unit and then sending that analog through the tape deck's read head is going to produce a lot of noise and a lack of clarity - fantastic if you're a hipster, but awful if you care about form or function.
