That's awesome! If you have the room, I would love to get Sunny a kitty condo if you are open to it. I've done this before with previous accounts, I'll post a link if I can find one just to make it more legit. Just PM me a mailing address, and I can use your reddit name.

Edit: Found one. Sage was in Florida too!

I bought 5 different scratching posts. 3 next to my couch and in front of places she used to scratch, 2 next to where she sits in the living room. She even likes to scratch one my suitcase in the bedroom, which I'm perfectly fine with it. I even brought it to the living room next to the couch.

She doesn't like any of that. Catnip doesn't have any effects on her either. I tried to pursue her with laser to shift her attention to other posts. She would scratch them for a bit then she walks away. :D

I love my cat and I'm not complaining in a bad way. I'm just trying to figure her out. That's all.

As a basic guideline, the primary goal is to keep them out of the sun and try to cool their paws and tongue when you can.

My buddy goes nuts for YoPup Frozen Yogurt for dogs, which is a great way to cool him down on a hot day!

Proof! :D

He also has an elevated cot that I keep under a table outside. Nice way for him to sit in the shade and cool off a bit. At my parent's house, he found his own spot under a shady tree in the grass and can sit there for hours. But he usually comes inside once it's too warm for him.

I have two cats. One is a six-year-old male who I got from the Humane Society about four years ago. The other, a twelve-year-old female who I also got from the Humane Society about 5 months ago. My six-year-old male is gentle and seems to be okay with other animals. Introduced them slowly. He was okay with her after just a few days, but she would hiss and swat at him. It's now been five months and she still doesn't like him, but they are now able to co-exist. He generally avoids her and while I wish they were buddies, it just isn't going to happen. If he happens to get too close, she might still swat/hiss, but it's nothing that will really hurt him. They often lay in the bed together, but at opposite sides of the bed. She wears a calming collar (this type) and it does seem to help her mood. She can be affectionate with humans, but she can get quite anxious sometimes. You can also get the calming stuff as a diffuser or spray. Using the calming stuff, she tends to be less territorial and lashes out at him much less. I'd recommend that.

Also make sure to give them their own places where they can hideaway from one another; for example, I have a cat tree in my living room, a cat bed under my bed, a little cat bed in one of the windows, and a little cube thing the cats can crawl into to rest/sleep. I also have two automatic feeders set up beside one another, and they both are always side-by-side when eating...but only b/c they have to be b/c it dispenses the food at the same time.

I wouldn't worry too much though. Worse comes to worse, the most common result is they might not like each other, but they will at least learn to co-exist. My six-year-old male cat still seems generally happy and although she can be mean at times, I think he's just fine. Just give it time, and I think it'll be fine. Good luck!

u/mindzipper · 4 pointsr/cats

yes my friend I do. I hunted a LONG time to find one that I could disable the auto timer, but this is by far the nicest, most comfortable and most versatile heating pad I've ever had. And it's long

it's hard to explain without seeing it. it's not like other heating pads that have a cloth wrapped around a heating element, the cloth in this is part of the heating and the element is inside it. it's also machine washable, and you can use the stuff in the link below (also bought) for a heated moist therapy. the cord unplugs from the heating pad itself so it can be washed in a machine

this thing rocks. but there's one other option, a pressure activated pad that i had for my outside strays when I cared for them. it stays on as long as they're laying on it. it says it's for outdoors, and i used mine outside, but when I moved I brought it in and my inside cats sleep on it most of the day. it doesn't get hot, just warms enough to make them happy

here's one of my cats on the pressure activated pad

2 things help immensely: Get a scratching post made of sisal rope like this and trim your cat's nails. Use regular nail clippers and just trim the ends. Don't cut back to the quick (where the nail switches from clear to colored) or they'll bleed. Might take a team effort to get it the first few times.

I also put double sided tape on the places my cat sharpened her claws for a while, that helped. Cats HATE touching sticky stuff.

It is normal for cats to be active in the early morning since their vision is best in low light. You can try to get her to sleep longer by wearing her out at night with an interactive play session right before bed. If my kitty is being particularly annoying the morning, I'll get out my cell phone and put a bird video on it for him to watch. That will calm him for at least 10 minutes, haha.

For the scratching, I would place double sided tape (like this: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Sticky-Paws-Deterrent/dp/B007I08FI4/ref=pd_bxgy_petsupplies_img_z) on the couch and put the thing you want her to scratch on right next to the arm of the couch. She won't like the feeling on the tape on her paws and with the post right there, you can quickly redirect her to scratching on the desired object.

u/WorldsSaddestCat · 3 pointsr/cats

Congrats on the new kitty!

Stuff I can think of:

  1. Interact with your cat a lot to get it socialized.

  2. Get a nice comfy bed, some toys, and a litter box. The. rule of thumb with litter boxes is to have one more box than cat. So, one cat and two boxes.

  3. Clean the litter boxes at least once a day.

  4. Find a good vet and emergency vet in your area.

  5. Get a scratching post if you value your furniture. I had one of [these](TRIXIE Pet Products Baza Cat Tree https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0027IVL6K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zxw6AbS76SMKJ) and my cat loved it.

  6. Don't cheap out on food. Nutrition is important.

  7. Consider pet insurance.

I'm sure there's more stuff but that's all I can think of right now.
u/THScam2009 · 3 pointsr/kittens

Protip: Start cheap. Cats enjoy making you spend money on them, only to bat whatever you bought under the couch, and never touch it again.

You're definitely going to want a scratching post. a.) cats are going to scratch because it releases endorphins and keeps their claws nice and strong and pretty, and it's another way of territory marking b.) If you don't give them something to scratch, they will scratch what you didn't give them to scratch, i.e. your bed frame, your couch, your table legs, your couch cushions, your own legs, your Aunt Phillis, etc. Point is, I've never had a cat that didn't use a scratching post. You may have to show it to them a few times to get them used to it, but get something with a toy attached to the top, (like the one in the link below) and as soon as they start playing with it, and get their claws stuck in that glorious scratching post, they will fall in love with it.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027IVL6K/ref=crt_ewc_img_oth_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

This also takes care of your bed desire. If she/he doesn't like the bed (or the scratching post), then hey, you've still got a scratching post, (or a bed). My bet is, that once they start playing with that little toy on top, they will pass right out in that bed. (Also has some really great reviews.)

As for the cat tree, personally, I've always wanted one, but I've never had room for one. Try out something small like the thing I linked above, and see how they like it, and how they interact with it. If they like it, then you may want to spend some more coin on a big cat tree. If they never even look at it, then you might want to consider saving the money.

Hope this helps.

Hi! Just wanted to add:

Best thing I ever invested in, was a cat tree! My cat absolutely loves it and I can't image our lives without it. Cats feel much more secure in their environments when they have higher ground they can get to. Here is an amazon link to a great brand: https://www.amazon.com/Armarkat-B5701-57-Inch-Tree-Ivory/dp/B003BYQ100/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1474819240&sr=8-2&keywords=armarkat+cat+tree

Also, to combat an litter box issues, I would suggest investing in a nice litter pad for accidents or for tracking litter out of the box. I just bought this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AUU90IW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It is pricey, I know, but it has made the clean up process so much easier.

Also, please please please invest in some quality cat food. I might get some flack for this from other Redditors, but quality cat food makes a difference (I have found that there is a heated debate about dry versus wet food and whether brands really make a difference). I have chosen to err on the side of caution and buy high quality food to prevent any future health problems. From the research I have done, a combination of dry and wet food is best, and it is not ideal to simply provide dry food for cats, since cats need to get water intake from the food they eat. Here is a good article suggesting some good brands (http://www.reviews.com/cat-food/).

Not to knock what you've done, but for $50 (and none of your time - you say this took a few hours) you could have got this from amazon, or this for $40.

looked up to see if i could find what i have for them. They have beds like this one but orthopedic and larger.

and then they have these but corner ones.

Honestly when they sit outside they usually sit on my wicker patio furniture. But when it's hot out they will lay on those beds instead of the deck. But they use the dog bed inside, though they also just use the couch and my bed.

There are a few items I really need/want (in order of importance):

u/fluffy_cat · 2 pointsr/dogs

I have had a cat for the last 13 years and we only recently got a puppy. At first the cat was scared and nervous, he hid upstairs and acted strangely for a while. Eventually, the cat got used to the puppy being there and started being aggressive and dominant towards the dog. The dog soon got the idea and started leaving the cat alone.

Now our pup is 7 months old and he and the cat tolerate eachother pretty well. The cat has adapted by spending more time on our counter, which we have had to allow, meaning he can be fed in peace and can escape the dog if he likes. The dog seems to like the cat and can get pretty excited to see him, but the cat can keep the dog at bay by hissing.

We are now comfortable with leaving the two alone in the same room for an hour or two, but they certainly aren't friends yet.

___

In response to your post, I think having a dog-free zone is an absolute necessity. If your cat can't escape from the dog to feel safe, I think they are much more likely to be aggressive. As well as potentially setting aside a room, also think about some kind of cat tree so that the cat can get used to being around the dog but be safe from being chased.

Naturally, this all depends on how relaxed your cat is. Some cats will be very tolerant of an excitable puppy but ours has probably got a bit too used to being away from threatening children/other animals.

u/acciocorinne · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I love animals! They truly are my passion. They really seem to have life figured out--pets love nothing more than spending time with their people, and I think that's what we should all try to focus on! I have a ton of cat stuff on my wishlist for my kitty, but this is most related to my love of pets, because my kitty loves to sit at the window and watch me when I'm outside! But the window ledge is tiny, so one day I want to buy her this seat so she can pretend to spend time with me more comfortably :)

My wife and I bought this exact tower (but black) when we only owned one cat. We have two now, but they love it. It's not as expensive as you'd think.

u/trampledbyriley · 2 pointsr/entwives

Adopting an adult cat is awesome! I personally have to use an acrylic bong, because my cat is the shove-it-off-the-counter-for-attention type, but that's just me, and it doesn't bother me. She likes to sit with me when I smoke, so I just blow it away from her. She's gotten smoke a couple times but it doesn't seem to bother her.

Also, I recommend this cat tree if you get a smaller cat. Ours was sturdy and didn't wear out very fast at all, ordering a new one.

u/PM_me_punanis · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Knowing my dog, he would enjoy rolling around in it. Maybe even an afternoon nap.

And then in 2 days, there's going to be a rip on the side with foam hemorrhaging from it. The only dog bed that has lived for long is this.

u/PhantomAngel042 · 2 pointsr/Pets

I think as long as you give your new friend a lot of one-on-one time with you, and put up things like a cat tree and maybe a windowsill hammock for sun-bathing (like this: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B00FDU5JO4), a kitty would do just fine in your apartment, fully indoors. With plenty of love from you when you're home and toys to play with when you're gone, kitty will be okay alone during the day- although they do love company, so if it's possible to get 2 at the same time, who are already bonded, that would be ideal. Honestly 2 cats is really not much more effort than 1, you just have to budget a little more for food, vet, litter, etc.

The whole indoor/outdoor argument is really a personal choice- some people think it's cruel to keep cats inside all the time, some think it's the best and safest place for pet cats. I have had 4 indoor-only cats with me in as small a space as 450 sq ft (temporarily) and none of them is the worse for it. They're spoiled rotten and don't seem to realize that the outside world is anything more than a giant entertainment screen to be looked at through the back door for their amusement.

The only thing is, do not let a cat out onto the balcony unsupervised at the 5th floor, a fall from that height could be disastrous or even fatal. There are some cool cat tents you could use for some fresh air time though, they're small enough to fit on an apartment balcony. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002KWHE1E

And last of all, thank you for saying you'd like to adopt a cat. If you don't have a ton of time and energy to chase around a blazing ball of fluff and attitude, you may want to get an older cat rather than a kitten. Even by age 2 they've calmed down considerably from their demonic-possession kittenhood (and I say that in the most loving way possible), while still being lively and ready to play at the drop of a hat.

Best of luck to you. If you do get a fuzzball (or two) be sure to update and let us know!

I actually have 4 of these because my cats love them: TRIXIE Pet Products Parla Scratching Post https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NE2X3U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6ZTMAbY92DJZG

You can buy scratchers even taller than that if your cat is really tall or whatever, but my cats are about average size and the one I recommended gives them plenty of room to reach up when scratching. You can also buy fully carpeted scratching posts but my cats prefer sisal rope so I personally don’t buy those.

I haven’t really used the horizontal ones either with my cats but I thought I’d recommend those as an option just in case. If your cat likes scratching trees a lot though... I think starting with a tall, vertical scratching post might be a good idea.

I'm really glad to hear things have improved. Yes, it's very likely he needed time to adjust to his new home. With any luck he will continue to improve over time.

Are you going away over the holidays? I ask because you said he got more destructive after your trip this spring.

This product might help with his scratching at the carpet outside the door.

Does he have any scratchers near the sofa? It's great that he stops now when you tell him to, but you could take it a step further and redirect him to the scratcher with lots of praise when he uses it. Even if he already has scratchers elsewhere, sometimes it really helps to put one right next to the object they're scratching, since they apparently feel the need to mark their territory in that particular area.

Do you trim his nails regularly? If not, that can help control the amount of damage. There are also nail covers that you can try.

>sometimes it really is like it's some kind of attention seeking behaviour.

One of my cats (the passive one I mentioned before) will tap me with her front paw to get attention, which sounds ok except when she gets really anxious (or hungry), she'll follow me constantly, getting underfoot and repeatedly tapping my legs and screeching, and if I can't deal with her directly, she will begin adding a scrape with her claws when she taps. Is he doing something like that?

Oh, one more thought: he might like the toys that dispense kibbles or treats. That would be another thing to try for when he's alone during the day. If you're not familiar with them, it takes work (both physical and mental) for the cat to get the treat out of the toy, which helps satisfy cats' hunting instinct.

I would buy the dog metal dishes. Plastic can get full of icky germs unless you wash it constantly. And then the teeth marks =P

  • Car Safety Harness
  • A car ramp if you have a truck/SUV. This can be especially important as they get older.
  • Potty training doorbell - just raise their paw for them every time you take them out to potty and pretty soon they'll be doing it to let you know they need to go.
  • Raised Bed - these are good if you guys like to be on the patio or what-not. Keeps them elevated a bit but still able to enjoy the warm weather. Also good inside as they get older.
u/sigamalito · 2 pointsr/Pets

Walking is an excellent idea, particularly for an active breed like a manx!

I would also suggest a few extra things :

  • interactive feeding toys. She will have to use her brain to get food out of a toy, and that will make her less bored and get some energy out. Just be sure to adjust her regular feedings so that she isn't getting extra calories, or even replacing the food dish with an interactive toy or interactive dish.
    Example 1 .example 2
  • The SSSCAT training aid these work well to set boundries within the house for some cats. You could consider placing these next to your vents.
  • Try to wear her out mentally and physically. I'm betting she would probably be a good cat to try to clicker train to do tricks. Clicker training can be excellent physical and mental stimulation. It sounds weird to train a cat and I've never done it with mine, but I see people who do it all the time online. Karen Pryor (she popularized clicker training) has a ton of cat training tutorials.
  • This tape : Sticky Paws can be put on the slats of your vents. Most cats don't like the sticky feeling on their paws and will stop messing with what you put on them....this didn't work for my cat. My cat just licks the tape.

There's a double sided tape called Sticky Paws that can help. It doesn't harm surfaces, and cats find it unpleasant to walk on the sticky so they eventually learn that going there is not a fun place to be. It worked when I wanted to discourage my cats from jumping down from the top of the fridge to the stove, so I put it on that side. I like it because it's much more subtle and looks much less unhinged than tinfoil everywhere.

u/princess_peach413 · 1 pointr/cats

In my experience, most apartments are more likely to let you have a cat than a dog, especially if its only one. You might just need to pay a little extra on the security deposit.

As far as keeping your cat entertained, my cat's love having a window perch like this that they can watch all the action outside! Beyond that, just remember to actively play with your kitty for atleast 20 minutes every day. It can be a pain when you're loaded up with school work and university social life, but you will have a much happier kitty if he/she is getting the right amount of exercise!

u/hdizzle7 · 1 pointr/dogs

Get an elevated dog bed. Our dog sleeps on it next to our bed and it's comfy like a hammock. It's also easier to teach dogs to go to "place" or "bed" using these. I give my dog an unsalted peanut every time so now she goes to bed on command. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0091E7Q2G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_G3TvDbWARRHNT

You could bump temp up a few degrees, to say 74. Drop down at night no worries. I have this bed for my girl, she’s almost 11 and during winter is normally on my lap or in the heated bed or by the radiator. Get the large size and she’ll grow into it. I keep my place between 66 at night and 72 at the most during the day, usually 70. With kittens a little extra heat might be nice, but as long as the kitten is a healthy weight for its age and is eating good and no health issues, don’t worry. They are tough little critters and walk around in fur coats.

Lol, I got this one but my cat is small and slim (9lbs). When I bought it, I was also living with a bigger and clumsier 13lb cat and he liked it too, but I don't know how well it holds up to any bigger. Back then it was against a wall and would shake a bit when the 13lber jumped on it. It's free standing now and doesn't shake when the 9lber jumps on it, but generally speaking she's always been a better and more graceful jumper anyway.

You need to get the Sims 4. I mean is there really anything else that's as frivolous and time consuming and yet satisfying as warping, shaping, and bending the lives of these poor electronic people to your every whim? I think not. I think not, /u/autumnwake! You kind of need to buy it. Now. And revel in the Simlish and awkwardly animated uncensored Whoo Hoo!

Okay, so, if I had ~$30 I know exactly what I would get. I want to get my cats a window perch. They look so sad trying to lay on the narrow windowsills. But we're treating me, right? So I'm not sure that works for your contest since it's not technically for me. If I were treating myself I'd definitely get Fables Deluxe Vol. 2.

u/xooxanthellae · 1 pointr/BeforeNAfterAdoption

Sorry to be judgey... I just can't fathom getting rid of my cats. To me that's like saying "My son messed up the furniture so I'm putting him up for adoption."

Here are some options for [kitty caps] (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/181-7043599-2466940?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=kitty+caps).

Also, you have a [scratching post] (https://www.amazon.com/TRIXIE-Pet-Products-Parla-Scratching/dp/B000NE2X3U/ref=sr_1_6?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1467325363&sr=1-6&keywords=scratching+post) for them, right? Cats need to scratch, so if they don't have a scratching post they will scratch the furniture.

Another option is to put this [double-sided tape stuff] (https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Sticky-Furniture-Deterrent/dp/B0006NE4QC/ref=sr_1_3?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1467325481&sr=1-3&keywords=cat+furniture+protector) on the furniture where they scratch. They hate sticky stuff so they'll avoid it. After a while they learn and I think you can take it off.

u/PickanickBasket · 1 pointr/lifehacks

Double-sided sticky tape on the blinds where she can reach (temporary). Rub delicious foods or catnip on the scratching post, and scatter treats on and around them. You should have MULTIPLE posts out for them- tall ones, "loungers", wide ones. What kind of scratching posts do you have right now? We have a mixture of the cardboard ones and rope and one of these carpet ones and our cat prefers the rope and mostly ignores the cardboard, but other people swear by the other kinds, so I think some cats just have a preference. This cat house is my cat's FAVORITE thing to claw on, but she also likes her lounger which can be easily mounted to the wall instead of we wanted to switch things up.

u/ChimmyChimmyCocoPuff · 1 pointr/cats

One of those ones with the wire bristles is great for detangling and removing undercoat; they can also hurt after a bit, so be gentle. Don't press it down, get one with a heavy wooden handle and just rest it on him and drag it slowly and nicely. When he's had enough of that, see if he'll tolerate a finishing brush with soft bristles. It will help soften his fur and give him a little massage.

Cats love almost any warm, soft surface. My cats' favorite is microfleece. I have a microfleece blanket on the sofa for them to lay on, since it's easier to wash that than to shampoo the whole sofa. They lie on it, and they also love to "make bread" on it. IME, none of my cats have ever liked those pet beds they sell that are basically a mat you throw on the floor, so save yourself 20 bucks there. However, all cats I've ever met have loved window perches like this one:

There are bitter sprays but they may stain and they don't smell great. I only use it when training kittens not to chew cables. Double sided tape on the couch for a month or two and catnip spray for the scratching post might work. You could also try different types of scratching posts that allow for different postures. I have 2 cats and they use 2 differently oriented posts because they feel more comfortable that way. Even though I have plenty to cover both cats of several varieties they have their favorite and gravitate towards the posture that they like.

It feels pretty sturdy, I'm pleased. Frank is a big boy who weighs about 18lbs so we searched for something that could accommodate large cats.

I haven't tried this yet, but it seems like it would work, just make sure to find the right size or cut your own. CarPET Scratch Stopper 30 - Stop Cats From Scratching Carpet at Doorway https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D00MXZ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2QJOAbSVDWE25

I assume this was targeted at me, just fyi since you didn't reply directly I didn't get alerted!

Things like a fan (~$60) dedicated to him in his room, and an elevated bed (~$21) to better facilitate keeping him cool that we managed to fit in his crate (orange may have pics?).

Some items to save US headaches include rug tape (~$15) to keep him and our stuff from getting slid around as he plays, a light-weight crate (~$86) for when we bring him with us to places and need a place for him to lay down and relax, mainly for when we are doing stuff with our other dog.

LOTS of clickers were purchased just so they are always handy. Some other oddities, like balance balls and stuff just to get him used to being on strange surfaces. This is mainly to set him up for future competition success, though.

Bitter Apple spray to make sure he doesn't chew things he shouldn't (rugs, shoes, couches, chairs, base board, electrical wires...basically anything that isn't his toy got sprayed daily for the first few weeks). Lots of Natures Miracle & paper towels to clean up any accidents.

Personally, I'd say the cat can tell that you don't like him in that you're actually paying more attention to him than you think you are. Every time you pick him up and move him or talk to him or shoo him away you're interacting with him, which is what he wants, attention. And now he's afraid of you so he matches your frustration in some actions and you apply your feelings to him for the other ones. So first things first, ignore him completely. Don't look at him don't pet him don't react positively or negatively to his actions. Especially the peeing thing, don't just stare at him. If you do want to play with him pick a room or a place and only play with him there and ignore him the rest of the time. That way he associates playing with you with that spot. A bell on his collar might be a good idea if you want to be able to tell where he is so you don't accidentally pay attention to him.

Secondly, for the peeing. Make sure you clean that spot with an enzymatic cleaner. Nature's Miracle is a really good one. Clean that spot OBSESSIVELY. As soon as he pees there. Then provide better alternatives. How many litter boxes does he have? Are they in a private calm spot? How often do they get cleaned? Have you tried putting a litter box over that spot and then slowly moving it to another room if he starts using it? http://www.catbehaviorassociates.com is often linked here. Check it out for litter box help (and help with the other stuff too).

For keeping him off furniture I would try remote methods. That way he has bad associations with those surfaces and NOT you or his owner. Something like the scat mat or sssscat. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/petsafe-scatmat-indoor-pet-training-mat

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RIA95G

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Sticky-Deterrent-White/dp/B007I08FI4/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_199_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VVYJYPG4MSAWVGJQB5C9

Eventually he'll get the hint and stay off those surfaces. You can also reward him for hanging out where you want him to hang out by leaving treats hidden in "his spots". And same for the peeing problem, you have to provide preferable alternatives in addition to the negative reinforcement. If you don't want him on your surfaces you have to provide higher surfaces that are HIS. Cats like to be high up. You're never going to get him off the surfaces without providing an alternative for him. Look into Jackson Galaxy's Cat Super Highway or "catification".

Finally, this cat seems bored. I would make sure he has plenty of stuff to play with on his own or that his owner is putting at least an hour a day into playing with him (think of it like walking a big dog. The dog needs that activity or else it goes nuts cooped up). You don't mention how old he is but younger cats or high energy cats need A LOT of play time. He's looking to you for entertainment and interaction because it seems like you're the only option he has. If you don't want to be his source of attention, provide positive alternatives. (Also I would keep some treats on hand to bribe him out of your room if he gets in there again. You could probably train him to come when called no problem)

I'm a relatively new to cats myself so this is just stuff I've picked up in my research. Hopefully some of the more experienced cat people on here can help! Check out those links and just search through the archives on this subreddit for more ideas.

He's probably bored/anxious (my little terrier likes to randomly destroy things for fun when left alone, but it's very random), or possibly overheating. My Samoyed puppy is very similar and used to take even pretty flat crate mats and bunch them up in the corner so he could lie on cold plastic.

I'd say he'd be fine with just the hard crate pad. One thing we did that worked out well was we bought a Coolaroo and assembled it inside the crate (you'd probably want a crate large enough to do this - we got juuuust lucky enough with a 41" crate and a 42" Coolaroo assembling it with the legs outside of the crate, but it was tricky stuff. We also have a standing fan on our pup. He really likes it in there.

Ask me about my wiener
Do you have a cat? If so, the thing you should be adding to your wishlist is this adorable cat tree.
(if you don't have a cat I would still like to hear about any other pets you have or have had)

Thanks for the replies. These are all the things we bought so far:

Bed

Feeder

Leash

Toy

I think I'm going to buy a harness and cage in person because I want to make sure its the right fit.

Oh and here's a picture of the little guy :)

These are all super similar to cat trees I've made:

Window hammocks are also pretty swell. And you can buy grass patches online!! If you decided to do a cat tree (which will give you lots of options for height and hidey holes) make it yourself!! Store bought ones are generally crap. All you need is PVC pipe, nails, boards, and carpet scraps (which can often be gotten for supa cheap at carpet installation places)

like this?

Refined feline stuff looks great, but is expensive AF.

u/Allimack · 1 pointr/Advice

Tacks could hurt the cat, and cause the cat bloody paws, making a mess. More likely, the cat will just swat the tacks onto the floor and you or your roommate will step on them.

One idea is double-sided tape. They sell rolls of it to put on furniture to deter cats from clawing the furniture. It would also deter the cat from walking on your scanner. Cats HATE sticky tape. Something like this. Or just take some regular tape and put it on, sticky side up.

u/hellosprocket · 1 pointr/cats

The image of filing a cat's nail is just adorable, for some reason :)

We've had a few scratchers over the years that the cats have really been into:

This cat tree was a big hit and has lots of scratching posts. Both cats also love this bed - they usually give it a good scratch and then settle in for a nap!

Agreed on the Armarkat brand trees. I bought [this] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BYQ1K0/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for my cat and she absolutely loves it. Easy to assemble, reasonably priced, and fast delivery are all huge bonuses as well. Now my cat goes 3 places; her bed in my room, the food area, and the tree.

I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ICGJZK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

No complaints, and it only heats up to cat body temp.

u/mrsoojay · 1 pointr/explainlikeimfive

If only they didn't look so ugly. This is the only one I've seen that I could stomach seeing every day, but that price is a bit over the top.

u/Neebat · 1 pointr/cats

I'd suggest starting off with something more like a 5- or 6-foot tree.

For example, this is about $100 including shipping.

Look for platforms that have railings. My cats won't sleep in a place where they're worried about rolling off. I'm hoping the hammocks on this new one serve the same purpose.

Also, cats seem to disregard the first 2-3 feet of the tree from the floor up. Even the kitten goes straight off the second level on this tree, and ignored the bottom house on the old one.

If your cat is declawed, that makes a HUGE difference (and it's a very bad idea.) I've never gotten a declawed cat to climb, even when structures should have been good enough.

Otherwise, if you're building your own, I'd suggest nothing but verticals and maybe a ladder for the first 3 feet. (Healthy cats will ignore the ladder, but kittens and the elderly might use it.) I've been amazed how much my cats want to be UP VERY HIGH. And that's why I got the 8-foot tree. I've got one that will happily hide out in the ceiling if she can find an opening. (We had a leak, so there was a hole.)

Put it near a window or in a central place with a nice view. Cats LOVE being able to watch the world.

I got mine on Amazon (free shipping!) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BYQ100/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And yeah, beware the toys on a string!

u/kittenfurcoat · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Ohh my gosh I love the iPhone 4/4s case, as well as the wallets! Beautiful. My current favorite thing on Amazon is this cat tower: http://amzn.com/B004BA6LSK because it is modern and so much more aesthetically pleasing than all of the other cat towers I've seen! However, it is also much more expensive, which is why I don't have it yet...

My kitties love their hammock! They are always fighting over who gets to use it. All my furbabies here :)
