Try getting a shallow bowl like this lots of cats won't eat the food around the sides of the bowl cause they dont like the feeling of their whiskers pressing against the sides. I actually feed my cats off a plastic plate and wash it between uses

In have one like this PETMAKER Stainless Steel Elevated Pet Bowls with Nonslip Stand for Dogs and Cats-Raised Feeder for Food and Water with Removable Dishes- 40 Oz Each https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7QCXW9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NgXxCbJ7MFD2W

My cat actually digs under the dish when she drinks. I always assumed it’s an instinct to dig for fresh water.

we have one of these for one of our dachshunds, works so good and i think it entertains him a little bit too, or who knows it might piss him off pretty bad

It's a slow feeder/puzzle feeder
If he eats out of a normal bowl, he inhales his food in .5 seconds and immediately throws it back up.

I bought a large food puzzle. It’s white and green and looks like hungry hippos. It does slow down her eating. Cheers

I recently found a puppy water/food dish at a pet store called MudBay. The bowl is shallow, about 1-1/2" and has sloped sides - about 6" wide at the top and 5" wide at the bottom. It has very mild concentric circle ridges on the bottom. it is also thick ceramic about 3/8" thick. I soak it in hot water while showering and it retains heat through the shave. I think it was only $8, which is good because I'll break it soon.
EDIT: Found a picture.. When I break it I'll try an oval shaped one.

I'm in a similar situation, do you have any toys in particular you'd recommend? I'm thinking of getting a treat ball dispenser and maybe one of these? He has lots of toys, and when he gets bored of some we put them away in his box, but when we bring them back out, he never seems to regain interest. When we get home he always wants to play, and I mean I can't go 10 minutes without him asking to play, and if I stop, he starts meowing again. If it's not raining outside, he'll be outside on a leash and harness in the yard watching birds in the morning for about an hour, and at night for an hour and a half. It used to release more energy, but not as much now since we de-weeded the whole yard. He used to hide in them from some of the animals that came into the yard. He has a cat shelf and the cat dancer referenced below.

I've read online of people putting handfuls of food around the house instead of just giving him food in a bowl? He's not very food motivated, so I haven't tried it. He loves treats though.

I want to get him a companion, though there's a lot going on and it's not feasible right now.

I think it would work just fine. There are bowls like this that might work too. Depends on what each one costs and which one you prefer more.

It'll be messy to be sure. The ones I'm thinking of are just bowls with cones sticking up throughout them so the cat has to work around the cones to get the food and can't just shovel it in. Something like this...

Have you tried the bowls that sits into a stand/rack/table? Like something like this so he wouldn’t be able to knock anything over?

One thing that has helped with my barfing cat is to get a slow feeder which makes it impossible to gulp all the food down at once.I use this one: Slow Feeder example
