(Part 2) Best cat litter boxes according to redditors
We found 667 Reddit comments discussing the best cat litter boxes. We ranked the 90 resulting products by number of redditors who mentioned them. Here are the products ranked 21-40. You can also go back to the previous section.
We wanted "the oldest cat in the shelter", happy to take a black one and/or male, maybe one that needed ongoing medicine, and had been waiting a long time, but one that would be happy to be an only pet, and a mostly indoor cat as at the time we both worked long hours in London. Preferably one with a bit of personality and one that actually liked people (comparatively). So, not much.
We visited Battersea and a couple of places locally but didn't find the right one until we went to Blue Cross in Cambridge. Where we found this tubby ball of fur - 12 and a half at the time and on daily metacam, over 15 now and healthy as anything. He took a little time to settle in and is still nervous of other men, but thinks I'm the best thing ever which is lovely.
We gave Blue Cross £80 and they let us pick him up the next day because we had all the stuff - litter tray, travel box, etc - organised already. he's insured (about £360/year and we're about even) and gets nice Royal Canin satiety food (only £15 a month or so) which stops him begging. Mostly.
Recommend this nice big litter box with a roof, and we use Catsbest clumping eco litter made of sawdust, it honestly stops the house smelling bad.
Find out whether the cat responds to catnip, if it does then get them stoned, it's hilarious. Easy to grow too, it's like mint, just put some seeds in a pot on a windowsill.
Oh yes - and when you get them home make sure they have somewhere to hide. Mine lived under the sofa for most of the first week, they come out and explore at night when it's all safe.
Don't ask me what I googled but I managed to find it:

Hi! Your bun looks exactly like my bun Horchata when he was younger
here he is!
When he was smaller we built him a living space with storage cubes and it worked really well. You just buy a pack of cubes and some zipties off Amazon, then cut up an ikea floor mat for the ground. We just made him a house out of cardboard. Make sure there are 2 exits for the house.
Also if you have lots of space you can do an X-pen . (This is a taller foldable fence that most people are suggesting here). That is probably the most popular idea on here too as it gives them more room to run around and be active. Our guy was free roam and only really went into the cage when sleeping.
You’ll also need a litter box that they can get in and out of easy, I recommend something similar to these just line the tray with shredded compostable litter and and bunch of hay, it’s almost a requirement for them to eat hay while the go to the bathroom. If she isn’t potty trained, having the hay only in the litter box is a great way to get them started as they eat hay all day long and will tend to go where the hay is.
Hope this all helps!
I got one of these for mine, in the larger size. It's the biggest box I've had for any of my cats, and I love that it's top entry (so much less litter everywhere). It might take a little getting used to for your furkids to jump into, but I love it so far.
You can use a litter box like this one (example here) - it's transparent so you can still monitor poops, but less spreading.
Use a hayrack to minimize the mess like here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLouX_cwM40

Also provide a dedicated digging box so she makes the mess in there only https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wesyTFX72DY.

Invest into a good vacuum:

Thanks for responding. Good to know the shelter is no-kill, that is important. A few things I would recommend but most of them do cost money so its up to you if you want to give them a shot.

Oh man, the danger is real for me, no doubt.... I just sketched out a cool cage based on your design and a set of wire mesh cube shelves. I can't wait to try to put it all together! I love weekend projects that involve a trip to the hardware store. :-) I'm going to do a smaller litter box for sure though, I usually do a 10x10 litter box at the largest and then use fleece for the rest of the bedding, it's much easier to clean. You could use the same base pan that you have, add a smaller section for litter, and cover the coroplast base in fleece! That way the bottom is still easy to clean because it's plastic, and the litter box is easier to remove. I lately I've been trimming down the sides of a natures miracle disposable litter pan so it's not too tall for them and it'll fit under the wheel well enough. But be careful, I've totally sliced myself cutting those down, too... it was a very sharp knife!
I do need to find a good way to keep him from tracking litter all over his cage though... I'm thinking of trying out one of those litter mats for cats but I'm not sure if his little feet would get caught in it!
You can keep them restricted to a smaller area to help curb bad litter habits. Give them more freedom again as they improve.
These litter boxes with high sides will help prevent litter from being kicked out.
This may be a seasonal change and will likely subside in a few weeks with you encouraging better behavior.
Other things you can do to keep them entertained include using treat dispensing balls to make them work for their pellets. Add more boxes, tunnels, and hidey holes to their enclosure. Cheap fleece blankets can give your buns something to dig into without making a big mess.
I have this: Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll 'n Clean Litter Box, Midnight Black, Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074L82WFD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3Rk9AbT96MXNJ. It's a bit expensive, but so worth it!
Roll it slowly until is almost upside down, hit the bottom two or three times to lossen up the litter that got stuck at the bottom, turn it right and take out the scoop on the side. It only take 3 minutes top. If you're confused (like everyone is the first time I try to explain it), start this video at 1:35 https://youtu.be/ySGsis-W10A
And it's really big. I have two cats and when is full of litter I can take two days to clean it. I could leave it for more time (a friend of mine does), but I don't like to leave it for too long and is easy to do.
That one looks awesome! Pretty expensive too. Typing in litter robot on Amazon I think I found the one they were talking about: Omega Paw Elite Self Cleaning Roll 'n Clean Litter Box, Midnight Black, Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074L82WFD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_1DuRBb3PPBQKA
I use the costco Scoop Away Complete. You can also get it on Chewy https://www.chewy.com/scoop-away-complete-performance/dp/103439?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Scoop%20Away&utm_term=&gclid=CIaqx7Pa5dMCFVaewAodBP0DGg&gclsrc=aw.ds I love this stuff and the litter boxes I use my mom got me one of those cat purifier things. I change them once a month and I notice a big difference. https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Magic-Purifier-Litter-Boxes/dp/B016KITJSO/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1494432460&sr=12&keywords=magic+blue+cat+filter and here is the litter boxes I own I love this kind https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Advanced-Hooded-Corner/dp/B004N1NAPY/ref=sr_1_11?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1494432499&sr=1-11&keywords=cat+litter+box
I got this for my cat when he was about four months old. He loved the system. I didn't have any trouble getting him to use it. I did have to keep two litter boxes because he is such a 'big pisser' that he would stop using the Scoop Free long before he should because of the amount of urine. When I would change out the two boxes, he always used the Scoop Free box first. My cat got two tall for the hood and I had to take it off, he never noticed any difference. I do like the counter on this system. Do wish that the box was bigger as my cat is quite a big boy now, he is Eight years old.
You will next want to invest in the Forever Litter Tray https://www.amazon.com/Forever-Litter-Trays%C2%AE-Replacement-Durability/dp/B001OCJXRO/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=scoopfree+tray&qid=1571805634&sr=8-4The pre-filled trays are very expensive. I did use one of the paper trays for quite a while (before purchasing the Forever Tray) by wrapping it in tin foil and then duct tape. Totally liquid free and did last a really long time, like six months. But I broke down and purchased the Forever Tray and have never been happier.
With the Forever Tray you will need to purchase crystal litter on your own. I do not know where you are located, but I used to purchase my cats litter at Publix. If you have Publix, look for Ultra Pet Litter. A one month bag is about $10.00, sometimes on sale for $9.00 and even $8.00! The good thing about this litter is that for every Six UPC codes that you send in to the company, they will send you a coupon for a free bag of litter. My cat, with his large amount of urination, a bag or the Scoop Free Trays, would not last a month, still don't, so I would use probably two bags of litter a month sometimes three bags, so I was fairly quick in getting lots of free bags of litter from this company. One time Publix had $2.00 off coupons for Ultra Pet Litter and that week it was on sale for the $8.00, I had many, many coupons and purchased many, many bags!
I did see that Amazon.com has a lot of Crystal litter choices. So if you have no Publix you will be able to easily purchase Crystal litter at Amazon.com Good Luck!

Yes, you can retrain your adult dog to use indoor solutions :) I like doggy litter boxes but you can also go with a lawn style potty area. I dont really suggest pads as I find they are similar texture to carpet and that can be an issue (at least for puppies), but its up to you. These things are typically what I see locally used by seniors as nice solutions when they cannot go out as much or as fast as they would like.
I use the Nature's Miracle Advanced Corner Hooded litter box for my 7 month ragdoll boy. It works pretty well for me, I haven't had any issues.
Since your cat is all hung up on having a clean litterbox at all times I suggested getting one of those Littermaid self cleaning litterboxes.

This is one one I bought for my chonker, he seems to be able to turn around fairly easily, the top also is not necessary so it can be removed: Petphabet Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Box, Extra Large, Teal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EGUWC0U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9HHMDbSVEJ2H9
Dsiposable litter boxes with Fresh Step clumping litter are the best thing I've ever used- and I've tried everything over the years. A very wide, sturdy scoop and unscented biodegradable poop bags with handle ties to keep the used litter & bacteria contained and odor-free in trash can. No mess, no litter spilled on the floor.
Scooping only takes a minute and the large poop bags with tie handles are worth every penny. One box lasts me 2 years, I scoop every other day- 1 cat. This makes scooping so much less of a pain in the ass.
I use Nature's Miracle disposable cat boxes- I get the Jumbo and use it inside of a covered litter box. But they are totally fine on their own, they do not absorb pee, leak or fall apart. I have one cat and I toss the Nature's Miracle box every 2-3 months, litter & all then replace with a new box and fresh litter. I NEVER smell the catbox at all and will NEVER scrub out a litter box again!

Not for me... well kinda. It is for my cat. She needs a new one.... bad. LOL conviviality Thanks for doing a contest!!!!
I have the Littermaid:
http://www.amazon.com/Littermaid-LM980-Mega-Self-Cleaning-Litter/dp/B004HGXVOK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369004931&sr=8-2&keywords=littermaid
When I used to work long hours it was the best solution and I only empty it once a week. Twice/three times if it got too stinky but that hardly happens. When I got a second cat into the mix it was an even bigger help. Good investment. It also helps when going away for weekend trips. Never have a worry while I'm away.
I'm on my second one (original one was bought at a Walmart for $80 and died after a little over a year bc it was cheap). This one though is much more powerful and picks up more stuff. So I would say yes if you could bring an outlet to the wall, it would be worth it.
Also, don't buy into the replacement receptacles. I just put a plastic bag from the supermarket over it so their waste goes right into the bag. I just then pick it up and toss it away and the replace with another one. Definite money saver.
Maybe get a bigger ferret litter box so if the cats use it it'll work? There are higher walled boxes with low entrances like these: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Or if the ferret's smaller than the cats maybe enclose it so the entrance is big enough for a ferret but not a cat.
Yep it's from Amazon, we have one too for one of the kitties that likes to poop off the side of the box. linky
First- Congrats on your new kitty! They're so much fun and full of character, I'm sure you will love having one.

Others already hit on some great points, so I'll offer my personal favorites for keeping mess down and controlling shedding.

Best of luck with your new pal!
I have a bloodhound nose and run a daycare, so I'm an absolute FREAK about my house smelling. I've tried everything, and my winning combination is a closed potty like this: https://www.amazon.com/Petphabet-Jumbo-Hooded-Litter-Extra/dp/B01EGUWC0U/ref=sxin_2_ac_m_pm?keywords=extra+large+litter+box&pd_rd_i=B01EGUWC0U&pd_rd_r=b1f9f320-1e10-4998-a460-df145634bed2&pd_rd_w=LUW5U&pd_rd_wg=iORiz&pf_rd_p=52ddbacc-f25e-4731-abd8-005c535b500a&pf_rd_r=2A8EYEGXPXPMYNW65001&qid=1562617616&s=gateway&sprefix=extra+large+litter
And Oxbow BeneTerra Eco-straw pellet bedding: https://www.chewy.com/oxbow-bene-terra-eco-straw-pelleted/dp/123546?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Oxbow&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAjw04vpBRB3EiwA0IiealsjU5uWpNk6X1U5vgRH0Z4oWfribUZ7ORSjru3kYBw9ZtGtJiTI0xoCxCoQAvD_BwE
I can go about a week in between changes with NO detectable odor (unless you stick your nose in the box!). My bun is a wicked digger so this also helps contain the mess. I buy 2 20lb bags of the bedding once a month from Chewy.
We bought this one from Amazon for like $20. My cats love it and I love that it keeps our dogs from going in for snacks.
IRIS Top Entry Cat Litter Box with Cat Litter Scoop, Dark Gray & White https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B075VTWX7V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_y.40CbGRG2JFS
I just bought this one for $18 on amazon. My cat throws litter everywhere so I thought I'd see if this type of box helps.
Crazy cat lady here, I have four in my apartment. Unless they are lying to me, everyone that comes over is always shocked I have cats because it doesn't smell like it "should". I have two air purifiers in the house these and I have this one that sits directly on top of the litter box. I've had my four cats around 10 years and also fostered probably about... 30. So I feel like I've tried it all and I finally have a good ritual and set up. I use this litter box because it's big and tall which they prefer but also easy to get inside when it's time to clean. I use this track mat because so far it's really done the best to keep the litter from traveling far from the box. And like you, I clean it 2-3 times a day. The litter that is. I use this litter which is LIGHT YEARS better than anything else I've ever used. One of my cats also has horrible allergies and this is the one litter I've found that she doesn't react to. It also doesn't dust so you don't have to constantly feel like poofs of litter are showing up around the house or on the carpet or furniture. I also vacuum every single day. I have one vacuum I use for the floor where there may be litter tracked and another I use that never touches litter. I think this is fairly important. This vacuum honestly is the best I've found for hair. Miracle worker. Unless you can afford the Dyson Animal. I also have this spray that I'll use for my carpet and fabric once a month or so and I feel like it makes a huge difference. And then lastly I also keep windows open whenever I can and I have this diffuser and put oil in it a few times a week and let it run for a bit, plus it looks cool with the lights :) Oh! and one last thing that I think is great... put one of those cardboard scratch pads near the litter box so the cat has to step over it to get anywhere else. Like off the track mat but near the box. I do this and all the cats inevitably use the scratch pad for fun when walking by it but I'm convinced it also cleans their paws from any litter left over before they start walking around the rest of the house!
Yeah I wouldn't sleep in the same room as my printers either :)
As for the dust issue.. we pretty much solved it by buying a litter box with a lid and a door, that might be worth a try.
For the bigger one: https://www.amazon.com/LitterMaid-LM680C-Automatic-Self-Cleaning-Classic/dp/B0097576MY/
It's important to get this one because it requires these little plastic boxes as poop holders, BUT when you don't use them, there's just a hole. So then you can hang it off of a shelf and put a trashcan underneath. Works great.
Here's my setup for upstairs: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Tzg2V43ar5hmwa6b7
Excuse the mess ;)
I have a similar setup downstairs but only have the round ones.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0791KJS3J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hdGpDbPV1T16W
Cats bury their waste by instinct, so they're technically born litter-trained. ;) You'll want to have two boxes available (if you have the room in your flat, of course). Open boxes are supposed to be way better than ones with covers, but mine actually much prefer the enclosed ones. *shrug* There's a bunch of different litter box designs, too... take a look at the selection on Amazon, if you get a chance (I recommend this one).
Some cats are much messier than others with the litter; one of mine flings pawfulls of litter out of the box. Another one of mine finishes, and races out, tracking little grains of sand as far as she can. We have litter mats in front of all the boxes, which helps a lot, but you might want to invest in a dedicated little hand-held vacuum to keep nearby.
And you'll need something for claw maintenance -- a scratching post or pad. Don't go for expensive, fancy things, because it'll need replacing periodically. I tried a bunch of different ones, but ultimately, mine prefer the cardboard ones (specifically, this one). Well, that, and one of the living room chairs. *sigh*
An adult won't be as hyper and needy as a kitten, but play is still important. A laser pointer does wonders. If you're crafty, you can make some little catnip-stuffed toys (I crocheted some little mice and things that mine love, although they usually bat them up and down the hallway around 4am).
Another thing I noticed, and others have similar stories, was that a couple of my cats would bump the water dish before drinking. Another would dip her paw in. I'm pretty sure they couldn't tell where the surface was when the water wasn't moving. I got a drinking fountain for them, which solved that, and has the added benefit of filtering the water, keeping it fresher -- and cooler (so important, here in California).
I'd suggest investing in a heavy duty box (there's a very heavy duty corner-shaped box that's both space-saving and sturdy from SmartCat ), and near it, put an inexpensive horizontal or vertical scratcher, liberally dosed with catnip. Once the scratching kitty uses the scratcher and not the box, move it away from the litter box a few inches every day until it's where you ultimately would like it to be. If at any point, the cat stops scratching it, move it back a little, wait until he's used it again for a few days, and then begin moving it again.
I had the Breeze for a few weeks, but I didn't like the idea of the expense of pads. I quickly went with the Smart Cat Box for a while, seemed pretty cost-efficient.
Are your cats declawed? It might hurt them a bit to walk on pellets; they might feel like lego bricks do to human feet. I suggest trying a clumping litter for a week or two; add some catnip to draw them to it. A sand-like texture might be what they'd prefer. And they can be automated too; I started with a LitterMaid, later had a Litter-Robot II, but I gave the indoor litter up when my gf insisted on housing the cats outdoors. Currently just using conventional clumping litter with manual scoop.
You can get a litter box that your cat enters from the top. One with a flap might work as well.

Lucky number 13! (Just like Taylor Swift)
Mine is 19 inch wide 22.4 inch long. Your current box looks smaller than that haha. I use the Catit jumbo hooded cat pan.

It's got a really big door that can be left open so it's almost like it's not a covered one. Whisker city makes a jumbo tub at PetSmart that's 34 long and 19 wide. It's an uncovered one. Here's the link for that one

Yeah, that seems way to high for what it does. You can get a manual roll litter box for $60. So... that roughly translates into $440 worth of electronics...
When we lived in an apartment, the first one was a studio. The litter box was set up downstairs, underneath the stairs, we eventually ended up moving it to the back door for privacy while using the box. We had hardwood floors, so if you do as well, I would recommend a mat so it’s easier to clean and your cat won’t track as much litter across the floor after using it.
We used to use a litter genie but buying the refills became expensive so we would just keep all our grocery bags in the pantry and use those to scoop the box and then tie them up and toss them in with the regular trash. I wouldn’t recommend directly putting the poop in your trash bc if you don’t accumulate as much trash, your cat’s poop will just sit in the regular open trash and the smell is terrible. So I highly recommend scooping into a grocery bag or even doggy poop pick up bags. They’re super cheap.
I hate being able to smell poop in the box, so I would scoop whenever I heard the cat finish using the box. If you don’t have that much time, i would recommend twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. Keeping it clean also ensures that your cat won’t go outside the box. Cats are weird like that. If the box is too dirty, they won’t like going in to use it. But by “completely clean it” you mean dumping all the litter and washing the box and then putting in clean litter all over again, we only really did this if poop got on the side of the box. Other than that, I think it’s recommended to keep the box 2/3 filled so usually once a week, I would pour in a bit more litter to keep it filled 2/3 of the way.
Sorry this is so long. I’m pretty much done. My last point, which was a lifesaver, was getting a litter box with a cover that has a swinging door. There’s various versions/brands. We got ours from Walmart, I don’t remember the brand. But it’s a lifesaver. It really diminishes the smell, there’s also a vent on the side and your cat has complete privacy. They also make litter box deodorizer that you can get at the dollar store.
Good luck with your new car! Hope this helps.
Keeps things pretty tidy in a very small space.

Buy the cheap kitty litter and use disposable kitty litter boxes. Slide the crap laden tray into a kitchen bag, tie it, and leave it outside. Have bf toss it into the garbage can. Done with minimal or no contact with kitty litter.
https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Disposable-Litter-Regular/dp/B0087Y5OOS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467177004&sr=8-2&keywords=disposable+kitty+litter+box
I wish I wasn't allergic to cats. I love them! Anyway, good luck!
You can improvise to replace the litter and use Foreever trays like one below and cheaper crystal litter of the same size.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OCJXRO
Two cats + 1 very large dog owner. For the cats, we use disposable litter box trays -- I find that this helps with not only deodorizing, but also with preventing pee smell from infusing into the plastic cat box. (You can find them here https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Disposable-Litter-2-Pack/dp/B0087Y5OIE/ref=sr_1_17?crid=1YO7JVAXQJ6ET&keywords=litter+box+liners&qid=1556994822&s=gateway&sprefix=litter+box%2Caps%2C161&sr=8-17) We clean the cat boxes about every other day, and throw out the whole box about every 7-10 days. We also make sure this room has plenty of ventilation (we usually have a fan going) and I like to mop the floor about once a week to wipe up any grime.
For the dog, we make sure we wash his bed frequently and he gets regular baths. He has wet food that I cannot stand the smell of, so we feed him outside.
Some other things that I think help: vacuuming regularly, because animal fur and dander can leave behind an odor. I have a roomba that has helped tremendously. I also am a fan of essential oils/candles/all the nice smelly stuff and usually will have something lightly scented in the room.
I have the Smart Cat Box and used Breeze pellets with it. Not all cats like pellets, but it made my old cat much happier, and was less messy than normal litter. The sifter it came with did not work for me with the Breeze pellets, so I kept the one that came with the Breeze system when I got rid of the box.

The smart outlet is a cheap one from idr where
The motion sensor is the Smartthings one
The litter box is similar to this one.
I use a plastic liner with this on top. Makes life so much easier.
I think they mean something like this, with the lid removed obviously: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I8Q6RQ
Roughly how large is the cat now in terms of height/length? Does your vet have an estimate how much more it will grow?
This one has a removable lid and can be used without it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004N1NAPY/ref=psdc_2975299011_t1_B003RQVGKC. It's pretty big.
My 16 pounder uses this with space to spare. Lid/door removable: https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Jumbo-Hooded-Cat-Litter/dp/B003RQVGKC
EDIT: On the second one, you can actually remove the plastic door and the gray flap on top to create a semi-covered box that partially open on top, which maybe a good compromise for a cat who needs some extra headroom.

Worth every penny
Recently drove two cats for 13 hours. Wasn't the nightmare I was expecting. Two products I bought:
Hope this helps, and good luck with your new adventure!
I’ll advocate for cat here! Same apartment situation as you, and my boyfriend and I rescued a kitten a few months ago. We purchased a covered litter box from amazon basics and arm and hammer clump and seal litter. We’ve had guests come over to our apartment and they claim that you would never know a cat lived with us. We clean the litter box every night and change out the litter and scrub down the box once a month. As a person with a very sensitive sense of smell, I can also say I’ve never had a moment where I can smell her litter. Just make sure you pour a good 3-4 inches of litter and you’re set!
