Great minds and all that. I was just thinking about how most of us probably have music we love to hate that we secretly lip sync and maybe even dance around in our underwear to. Of course, that's purely a hypothetical example. <cough, cough>

Actually, in all seriousness, it's taken me awhile to be OK with whatever I like for whatever reason. It took me longer than most since I spent the entire '80s pissed off at pop culture, and pop music was just the most obvious tentacle of what I saw as rampant consumerism run amok. But, at some point, you get to this place where the Sex Pistols are no longer relevant in the same way they once were, and just having some bouncy pop to wash the dishes to is more enjoyable than all that teenage angst.

Discovery of course, was not immune to the knee-jerk 'WTF-not-as-good-as-previous-album' reactions. Check out these gems from 2001 on Amazon

The Bad 25 rerelease has great demos where you can hear him just sounding out things by himself. The early Smooth Criminal demo "Al Capone" is great to hear to compare how it evolved.

If you do get one, get the album discovery This has to be one of my favorite.

Sampled is an interesting series, it's the original full tracks that were later reused. I've got four double CD albums from the series IIRC.

There are compilations released of classic tunes that were sampled by many hip-hop producers. They will advertise themselves by claiming that these are the tunes sampled in xyz productions, thus drawing attention to their use and possibly getting the producer in some legal trouble with the copyright holders if the samples weren't properly cleared.
