Check out Michael Daves and Chris Thile. They put an album out a few year back that is pretty awesome
And Daves put out a great concept album out last year where he does one entire set acoustic/bluegrass, then repeats the set in an electric style.
This would be a great place to start. I was (still am) a big fan of Scandinavian folk (especially when electrified) and Northside records had a great set of bands. The quartet in the video (Loituma) are on this sampler with another tune that is simply gorgeous.
Hedningarna are also fantastic (my fave song by them isn't on the sampler, but give a listen here).
And I love Hoven Droven...Had all 5 band members sing a CD at a club date a few years ago - so much damn fun live.
For beautiful female vocals, try Vaartina (not on the sampler). Here's one of many beautiful examples. And here's another because, why not?
This was used as the cover for a Leonard Cohen tribute album:

This is what I'm listening to on this drizzly Sunday.
Swedish punk rock - (This ain't yo mamma's ABBA!)
Nordic folk/punk (a lot of which sounds like it could have come from Appalachia)
Astronomy Rock, including Astronomy Rock Radio, Starbirth music and The Orion Syndrome, neither of which is large enough to even have an apparent web presence.
Zydeco
Arabic female vocalists including one of my favs Natasha Atlas

|name|Jamestown Revival|
|about artist|At the heart of Jamestown Revival is a friendship that spans over a decade. Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance grew up together in the small Texas town of Magnolia. From a young age, they shared a love for music as well as the outdoors. About an hour north of Magnolia TX, there was some old family land with a dilapidated ranch house where they spent the better part of their adolescence. At one point or another, music from Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Everly Brothers... ([more on last.fm](http://www.last.fm/music/Jamestown Revival))|

Welcome to the subreddit by the way! I’m always excited when there is a new post here.
I personally think that Ochs is super unique in his style of doing topical style folk songs while also experimenting and changing his musical style. Other than the obligatory Bob Dylan, I would suggest you check out Eric Anderson, Nick Drake, John Prine, Hoyt Axton, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, maybe some Simon and Garfunkel? I feel like no artist can truly compare to Phil as a character, but these are some musicians who do similar types of music that I also enjoy.
I also agree with you on the cd front, I have a cd player at home, and listen to exclusively cd’s in my car. I personally have “all the news”, and “i aint marchin’ anymore” on cd. The A&M stuff just never seemed to get any releases. I do have this compilation cd with several of the songs though, here is the link to that:
Ochs compilation
I also have several of his live album cd’s, they are surprisingly good quality and have several songs from that era. These are the two I would personally recommend:
Vancouver live 1966
Live again 1973
