Got an Android phone? DailyRoads is a good trip recorder and you can find universal mounts for your phone fairly cheaply.

There are some sellers on Amazon selling it for ~$5 less:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004Z8ZLOS/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&storeAttribute=cps&qid=1310572010&sr=8-2&submit.see-all-buying-options=see-all-buying-options&condition=new

Plus I don't want to give my CC# to some random site. You can buy it directly from Exogear through Amazon as well if you prefer.

Who could've guessed a tape deck would be more worthwhile than a CD tray? Though I use my CD tray to hold my phone holder, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Please put your phone down while driving. It looks like you're using navigation and you have a passenger considering how the picture was taken. I suggest have the passenger hold your phone while you drive, and investing in one of these...

As a longtime Ingress player, I implore you to not go cheap when attaching your ~$600 smartphone to your bicycle. Here is what many of us use. $20, and it'll keep your valuable phone absolutely safe.

I ordered this hands-free mount from Amazon and it's a good one. Thanks to voice recognition I can say "Hey Google, load the TDOT Smartway webserver" and it'll pop up. And with Bluetooth, I can take calls over my car's stereo system instead of using my hands. If you have an older car without Bluetooth, you can add it for $18 with this adapter. I have one in my older Subaru, and it's good to go there. It has a surprisingly good microphone built-in, as well as a quick charger.

Cool video, I have the Scosche magic mount and it stays a lot more stable than someone bouncing around.

Don't chase the heat on the map, you'll get burned every time. Even being in an area that's lit up does NOT mean you'll get a ride.

I give pax 5 minutes if I can't contact them, then, I cancel and move on.

Personally, I keep my car stocked with water (40 pack at Sam's Club for $~$3.00), and I have multiple charging cables for pax (links below). My charging cables for the rear pax are plugged in inside my armrest, so it's virtually impossible for them to be stolen.

After I verify the pax, I give them a friendly greeting, the ask them how their day is going. After that, I wait for them to continue conversation, if they choose to do so. About half of my pax don't say anything the whole ride, and I won't force them to, it's totally ok with me. If they want to talk, I'll engage in convo.

You'll learn over time when and where are the best times and places to get rides. For me here in Phoenix, it early AM, like 4ish till 9ish during the week, and weekend evenings.

I've been driving for 3+ years, and I have 2,000+ Lyft rides, and 1,500+ Uber rides. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I've been really happy with my Exomount Car Mount, which I originally saw recommended on r/Android.

As far as chargers go, I don't know of there being a difference for USB and Wall Chargers, but I do know that for car chargers you need to get one that the phone will recognize and pull a full one amp off of, otherwise you could use it so much that it still looses juice even on the charger (something lots of folks here have complained about). I don't actually know how to tell if this is the case though, I bought a Verizon charger a while back that has an extra USB slot in it for charging the GF's phone too.

u/funbob · 6 pointsr/ft86

I use a Scosche MagicMount.

I stick it to the passenger side dash. It sticks firmly and hasn't fallen off and the magnets are strong enough to hold the phone very securely. Obviously this won't work if you have a 17+ with a fuzzy dash, but I like this mounting position because it keeps the phone from interfering with the radio and HVAC controls and the cockpit is snug enough that reach is not a problem. It's also a convenient location to run a charge cable from the glovebox 12V.

u/AgainstFooIs · 6 pointsr/mazda3

I was like you, against vent mounts. I thought about all the disadvantages: it would block the AC flow, scratch the vents, the magnet might not be powerful enough, the need to glue a metal plate to the phone, etc.

I then decided to go against my previous decision after trying them all and get a vent mount and I must say, I'll never go back.

This thing is:

-made of hard silicon-rubber so it doesn't scratch your vents

-cheap, it's less than 5 bucks compared to 15-30 bucks for a bulky windshield mount.

-only blocks half the vent, I still get enough airflow in the summer.

-sits high enough that I can easily glance over.

-looks slick as fuck and super minimal.

-will not leave glue residue like the dash mounts do and will not fall off after 6 months if you live in a hot climate.

-the magnet is strong that even the biggest pothole won't affect it.

-no need to glue anything, no suction cups, no mount/unmount after every use

-the magnetic plate that you attach to your phone is so slim yet so powerful that you can just put it under your phone case and it will be invisible but still hold the phone strong.

-last but not least, this requires absolutely no effort to mount/unmount your phone.

Here is the one I highly recommend from Amazon by Spigen

u/TheRealFender · 5 pointsr/Android

I have this Arkon from Amazon and it works pretty well for my EVO. It should work for larger phones as well. The mechanism is starting to wear out after a year and a half or so. I think I got it for $14, so I wouldn't mind paying that again if/when it wears out.

u/YupYesYeah · 5 pointsr/Android

I've been really happy with my Exomount.

u/BionicBarnacle · 5 pointsr/FiestaST

In response to you and /u/StuckXJ, it looks like this mount. I have this one mounted on my windshield for my AP since it has a built in magnet and it works extremely well.

u/iChunky02 · 5 pointsr/pokemongo

I use this one. I also have the exact same one mounted on my motorcycle. So you won't have to worry about your phone falling off. It handles bumps and 70mph+. Plus it has prime shipping available. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V54CLNO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_QHHNxb0V5RNFE

EDIT: I have a Note 3, a pretty bulky phonr and it still has room for a bigger phone.

u/LookingForAnything · 4 pointsr/Audi

I have the same thing in my car. It's impossible to shake the iPhone out of it...

u/Scalions · 4 pointsr/mazda3

I have been using the Spigen magnetic vent mount for a year in 3 different cars. It has been amazing in each one. The one I linked is a 2-pack, but they sell individual ones too. I've used a couple different mounts before but none compare to this. Some people don't like mounting their phone on a vent since it may block some airflow and/or heat the phone, but I haven't had any problems with either.

u/KlfJoat · 4 pointsr/onebag

I see what you're bringing in other replies. And I don't have recommendations for those things.

But what I don't see is anything about your work tools. I would imagine that robot installation and servicing would require a hardware toolkit, an electronics toolkit, and a computing toolkit.

My job is highly technical and requires a number of computing devices that have to be charged at all times. So what I use and recommend there is as follows:

u/Jaylesso · 4 pointsr/civic

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073R68TSH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NUiWCbWVSZ608

I drive a 2014 Honda Civic and love this phone mount holder. I have an iPhone 7 and been using this phone mount holder for over a year now and it still works like new. Super sturdy, extremely secured and rigid, and has a quick release button. Yes I know you said you don’t want a vent clip but this one doesn’t block any air flow from my AC at all. All the reviews on amazon speak for themselves. My girlfriend recently stole this phone mount holder from me so I had to buy another one haha

u/aggie113 · 3 pointsr/subaru

Arkon mounts work in any car (well if you have a passenger seat!).

u/Florinator · 3 pointsr/350z

Sorry about the delay guys, busy weekend :-P

It attaches to the passenger seat bolt on the floor, it basically works on any car. I had the same system on my last 3 cars, I will never look at any other solution. They have different lengths. I think mine is this one

I've used this brand air vent mount before and it worked fine for the most part but ended up getting the top of dashboard mounted one and I've really liked that better.

u/dappervillain · 3 pointsr/Nexus5

If you're looking for a car mount, I use one of these in my car. Good hold, but worth noting I'm not using a case. Magnetic hold is strong enough for when I'm driving, but due to where I mounted it, putting the car in park can knock it off accidentally.

u/Lobotomite430 · 3 pointsr/Lexus
u/Mister_Johnson_ · 3 pointsr/SubaruForester
u/Hrekires · 3 pointsr/GooglePixel

you'd get something like this or this to attach to your windshield or air vent (or this if you have a CD player you don't use), and then just slip the other magnet in between your phone and the case.

u/InfrnalSky · 3 pointsr/prius

You would have to take your eyes way too far away from the window just to use it. It would be a pain if using it for navigation.

Edit: I purchased this one from Amazon and it is great.

Honestly. Really well. Better than I expected for sure. Would recommend. Just to note in my case the vents were already broken, not caused by magnet use.

u/spoonfedsam · 2 pointsr/videos

I have it. It's pretty awesome and handy. Just make sure you buy a good mount for your phone (this looks like a good one).

There's a "background mode" option, so you can use navigation apps while you're driving.

u/j13u11fr09 · 2 pointsr/Android

I have one of those and it's great. The two side arms that hold the phone in are high enough that I can plug the charger into the phone with no problem. This is with my phone's case on. It grips the phone tight enough that I have no worries that it will fall out...

EDIT: I have a DX as well...

EDIT2: just cause I'm afraid I might get you to buy something that doesn't work ;)

This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ELOOZO
It's actually model number SM410. As I said above, I feel it's a great mount for my Droid X. Holds it great and has room for the charger.

tl;dr Great mount, highly suggested.

u/Staedin · 2 pointsr/Android

I got an Arkon SM410 for my Galaxy S3. Its been great. Gives you 3 different ways to attach the dock to your car. On amazon right now for ~$15 before shipping

u/Gunski · 2 pointsr/Android

Anyone else have the Exomount? I love this thing. It works with any phone/camera/device.

u/MajorNoodles · 2 pointsr/Android

I picked up an Exomount Universal Mount a few days ago and so far, I'm very happy with it. Holds my SGSII right below the volume and power buttons, plus, it'll stick to most hard, flat surfaces - it stuck securely to both my car dashboard and the wall in my apartment. You just have to tighten the ball socket joint tightly to minimize wobble while driving.

u/beth6han · 2 pointsr/Dashcam

I'm assuming that you already have a A118C and want to take it with you when using rental cars, but I don't think you will be able to do that. There is no specific suction cup mount for the A118C that I'm aware of, and I don't think that you will get the stability with a suction mount even if you could find something that you could "MacGyver" something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/WinnerGear-Universal-Blackberry-Windshield-Dashboard/dp/B00BZWW3ES?ie=UTF8&at=&force-full-site=1&redirect=true&ref_=aw_bottom_links&tag=ca-skim0x493-20

You might be better off buying a Xiaomi Yi dashcam with a suction cup mount, it's small and easy to pack, costs about $70 and produces great video. Actually, if you are interested in saving video of your trips, the Xiaomi is the better camera. Cheers.

edit:

If you really must use your A118C there are some dashboard mounts that lend themselves to a little bit of DIY mods that would work. Let your imagination run free: https://www.google.ca/search?q=dashboard+mount&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJ05mEvrrNAhUJzIMKHew2BXoQ7AkIOQ&biw=1097&bih=542

u/laurits · 2 pointsr/Nexus5

Let me tell you. This one - Montar. It looks cool. It sucks to not only glass but also other surfaces, even a bit uneven. This is not marketing trick, it actually sucks because of something like a soft sticky cushion, like a gummy bear but like 3 times softer on the bottom that sticks to surfaces, plus there's the suction cup/handle. It never moves.

The red grip takes getting used to a bit - to get the phone in. But then it grips the phone, you don't ever have to worry it might move or drop out. I had one for my car and then bought second for my beloved wife (she has an iSomething), and she's happy, too.

There is no charger integrated.
There is no inbuilt wireless charging.

Nothing except suck, grip and rotate. But what it does, it does good. This is a good video.

I bought this after having tested like 5 different of cheap mounts of this kind that all had various faults.

I never could have imagined I'd express such satisfaction with a phone holder but Montar have done a good job.

u/BobbyDash · 2 pointsr/htcone

I use this one and I love it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BZWW3ES/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bought it in June so I would have easy access to GPS while moving from MI to CA. Mounted it on my windshield to the right of my rear view mirror. I typically just mash my phone in to it as the design is just a constant tension clamp that spreads apart. So, I've been pretty abusive to it. It hasn't come detached or fallen a single time. I keep a charger plugged in below and just stick it in the bottom. Perfect set up.

u/nightreap3r · 2 pointsr/Dodge

I feel you, mine does have navigation and it's still not easy to use.

I have one of these. I was a bit scared to stick it to my dash at first, but it fell off once not leaving a mark, so it doesn't bother me much anymore. It's a decent mount too.

u/supratachophobia · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

I prefer the Scosche magnet mount. The phone is more secure because the face of the magnet has a rubber coating.

u/cnik19 · 2 pointsr/subaru
u/Commander_Alex_Mason · 2 pointsr/fordranger

I have one of these in the bottom left corner of my windshield, works pretty well. If it's not high enough I tend to accidentally knock the phone off of it when reaching for my turn signal. (2003 Ranger)

u/MrSparkle1 · 2 pointsr/galaxynote4

I have this one and absolutely love it:

SCOSCHE MOUNT

After buying that, I bought this:

iOttie DashPad

so now I can place my mount anywhere in the car I want, even on textured dashboard surfaces. I can't speak from experience, but I always worry about adding weight to the air vents in the car. For one, you lose the quality of airflow in the car. 2nd I don't trust that it won't break one of the vents. The magnet works incredibly well though. I don't have a case on my phone and have the magnet tucked inside of the battery cover and haven't had any issues. The ONLY time the phone has left the mount was when I was in a pretty bad car accident a few months back. So as long as you don't go from 40mph to 0 in less than a second, this mount works great ;-)

u/killboydotcom · 2 pointsr/ft86

One option you may consider is using your cell phone as a dash cam. There are several apps out there, for instance:

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/dash-cam-android-comparison/

and you can use a mount like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-Magnetic-Window-Mount-Smartphones/dp/B00I9I8WGY

One shortcoming of most phones' built-in cameras is that they are not very wide-angle, like most of those dash cams.

Another option is the Garmin Virb Elite action camera. It has built-in GPS (and cool data logging) so it can be setup to auto start/stop recording when you start moving, and loop recording lets it record indefinitely as long as it has power, overwriting the oldest data as needed.

u/Dangy_D · 2 pointsr/ft86

Might be the pro series, I'm not really sure. It's really similar to the one you just posted, except it has a more adjustable mounting platform.

Edit: it's this one https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00I9I8WGY/ref=pd_aw_sbs_2?pi=SL500_SS115

u/gigem9000 · 2 pointsr/GalaxyS8

agreed. I just got this one: [Amazon LINK] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I9I8WGY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and use it with my iPhone 7+ and the metal plate I affixed to my iPhone.

question regarding magnet phone holders. It will hold the Galaxy S8 without the metal plate because of the wireless charging "maget" or "metal" built into the phone?

u/Mcba1n · 2 pointsr/iphone

Here's one that uses magnetic attachment so easier to place and remove, but very sturdy while in use.

Curious, were you just going to record with camera app or did you have an app you were planning on using?

Magic mount with a suction cup has always done me well. Bonus for only having a flat metal plate on the back of the phone, unlike the magnetic ball mounts.

I use this, MagicMount. It’s placed above the A/C vent on the left side. I prefer this one since it does not block any vents and is a perfect spot. A quick glance to the left and you can see everything.

I've been using the Dashboard Mount TechMatte MagGrip Dashboard and Windshield Magnetic Universal Car Mount Holder. Only $8 on Amazon.

I have a magnetic case for my iPhone, but it also comes with "magnet plates" that you can place in any case (or even stick to the phone if you dare).

u/linuxgator · 2 pointsr/FordFiesta

Not sure if the dashboard of the fiesta is like the Focus, but it took forever to find a dash mount that would actually stick to it. I eventually found this one and it works great. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I highly recommend it.

I did the top one but for the bottom I got this... works amazing and I have an iPhone 7+in a case, has never fallen off and I love being able to toss it up and grab it without snapping it back into the holder you linked

u/HlValadeen · 2 pointsr/oneplus

Depending on your cars layout this magnetic mount is what I've been using for quite a while now. You slide the mount into your AC vent and there's a metal plate you place in your phone case/stick to your phone. All you do is press your phone against the mount and it holds the phone firmly.

There is this one that attaches to your dashboard instead of the AC vent.

u/lackerty · 2 pointsr/Chevy

I use this one that you insert into the CD slot. Works great for me as I haven't used a CD in years so this is the phone holder I'll use until I eventually replace the head unit. At that point I'll probably get one from proclips mentioned in an earlier comment.

u/abronia · 2 pointsr/GalaxyS8

If it helps, here's my interior. I use the vent just to the left of the CD player, and it works fine. The vent does move, but it stays put when the phone is on as the phone actually rests against the vent. Fortunately, returns are easy on Amazon if what you get doesn't end up working out.

I tried this iOttie and ended up hating it, which looks to be very similar to the one you linked. It doesn't hold nearly as securely as the Kenu, and the one touch mechanism only worked about half the time (it would only disengage one of the sides.)

u/glebulon · 2 pointsr/Autocross

I have a 2012 too, bought this CD mount, it's pretty good, just a bit awkward when taking the phone out

u/drmonix · 2 pointsr/fordfusion

I know you said you're not a fan of the vent ones but I just got one of these for my car and it works great. I have another iOttie that mounts on the dash that I haven't had any problems with in 1+ year ownership. I recommend anything by them.

u/NewC303 · 2 pointsr/prius

I use this iOttie vent mount, it's been great so far. I don't like the magnet mounts because of the little plate you have to either stick to your phone or sandwich between the case and the phone. You can attach and detach the phone from the mount with just one hand - many non magnet mounts require two hands to use (hold open the mount with one hand, extract the phone with the other)

I use this https://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Holder-Cradle-Samsung-Smartphones/dp/B017HME9DC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505742767&sr=8-1&keywords=iottie+vent+mount works great. Doesn't use magnets. I switch cases often so can't put the magnet in the case and hate to stick anything directly to the phone.

Not sure what case you have but this one fits mine with a moderately thick OEM silicone case:

I believe there is an updated version of this mount, too.

u/CuvisTheConqueror · 2 pointsr/EmulationOnAndroid

> EDIT: Whoops, should've specified - I'm looking more for the ones that attach to the phone and make it more akin to a GBA or PSP and let you walk around with it, unless those are garbage. I will definitely look into 8bitdo's controllers too though!

8bitdo actually makes a clip to attach your phone to the controller, which would serve your purposes. https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-Xstander-Holder-SFC30-SNES30/dp/B017SFNW0E

As for my recommendation, I use a PowerA Moga Hero Power.

u/draxx_them_sklonskt · 2 pointsr/Damnthatsinteresting

I thought that this was for people who didn't want to pirate ROMs. If you don't care about pirating there is no reason to buy this thing. If you want to play with a controller, you can get one of those smartphone controllers and an adapter. You even get a lot more screenspace using this method.

I'm guessing this thing costs so much simply because it is such a pointless product.

u/Blovnt · 2 pointsr/retrogaming

I know you said you don't want a cell phone hooked to a controller but...

Have you seen this?

Pair that with a SNES30 Bluetooth controller and it's small, inexpensive, and super convenient.

I've had this for a few years and it's worked great.

I’ve got a Spigen magnetic mount. Genuinely nothing but good things to say about it. You would think that a magnet wouldn’t be strong enough but i’ve never had it fall even when driving hard.

Just get a sweet magnetic vent mount and literally install Android Auto from the play store. You can configure it to auto launch when it connects to your car's bluetooth. Simple and effective.

I prefer this mount as it has the strongest grip and magnet.

Actually, you can, for example Amazon has this:

https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Charger-Neotrix-Wireless-Standard/dp/B01GYPMECG

Of course, it won't work well as you can see from user reviews, for an obvious reason: you can't cover the wireless charging coil by steel disk, instead you must rely on a pretty thin steel ring which doesn't cover the charging coil, meaning it won't have enough force to hold the phone well, especially on a bumpy roads ;-)

This is my single most frustrating issue with this car. There is absolutely no place to put your phone. How do you design a car in 2019 with no place to put your phone?

I currently use a magnet mounting system under the Push to Start button. Simplest most effective solution. Phone never moves.

Oculus Rift CV1 requires at least one sensor to function. In fact it was originally sold with only one sensor and no Touch controllers. The original expectation was for seated play.

I'm not sure it'll work with VRChat with headset + keyboard & mouse, but you can try it.

If you lost the stands for your sensors I'd like to point out that the sensors have a standard 1/4"-20 screw connection. That will allow you to use any clamps/tripods meant for camera gear. Something like this, though there's many other options if this won't work.

I have two Arkon universal car mounts. They've served me well, and I specifically got them because they did not obstruct the camera. I use my smartphone as a dash cam, so that was important to me. YMMV, of course, since every device is different, but since it's a universal mount, you can easily adjust it to provide a clear view for the camera.

It holds tight--I've tested it by mounting my Nexus One in it, holding it upside down (over a pillow), and shaking. The N1 stayed firmly gripped.

I have two, because one is mounted to a smooth, suction-cup plate on my car's dash board, and the other one is mounted to a weighted friction base, which I use as a desktop phone stand. Pic 1, and Pic 2.

u/techniq · 1 pointr/Android

u/theconk · 1 pointr/iphone

For the record, I do not recommend this Arkon mount. Seems nice—adjustable for any device, a variety of mounting options—but I have problems: the vent mounting is really sensitive, so in my car it spends its time just hanging there (i.e. at the end of the clips), and the lower mounting forks are only adjustable in—they're not wide enough for a freaking dock connector. (Cue me taking my Dremel to mine.) I can get pics if anyone wants.

I went for a cheap one that seemed to have it all, but if this one breaks I'll get a better quality one.

I'm currently using an Arkon SM410 Universal Windshield with Dashboard and Vent Mountt. It has slight shakiness if you don't squeeze it in tight enough. The mount has never fallen off my windshield. I have no complaints with it other than it's kinda loud when you press the hinge release button.

i've had an s4 for over a year. Here's how I did my major functions:

  • HD Widgets, i paid for it and love it for a combined clock/weather app.

  • Up Next widget to display my calender on a screen.

  • Reddit Sync Dev - love this app for redditing

  • Waze - As /u/thejeninator said, use it every time you drive even if you know where your going. it will direct you around traffic (most of the time). Use this in combination with http://amzn.com/B003ELOOZO which gives you 3 ways to mount the phone in your car. I use it everyday.

  • MightyText - lets you send regular sms messages from android tablet or computer or gmail interface. i use it to text instead of AirDroid.

  • Nova Launcher - replace the stock launcher for a faster and lighter interface, and turn on the feature to enable "ok google" from any screen.

  • towelroot - use this to root, then make changes now available to you in nova launcher and install greenify to hibernate apps that want to run and waste your battery.

  • google keep and it's widget - quick note taking app, nice widget, i use it to store quick things.

  • titanium backup - once rooted, use it to freeze all the crap that's on there.

  • DiskUsage - lets you see what files are taking up space visually. light program, and useful for finding where all your space went.

  • I use dropbox to do camera uploads on wifi, faster and easier to manage that google+. i had issues with google+ uploading on 4G even when set to wifi only.

I like this mount so much it's moved now between probably 5 or 6 cars that I've owned. You slightly back out the passenger seat rail bolt, slip this beneath, re-tighten. Some may be uncomfortable with messing with the seat bolt, but as long as the bolt still fully engages the threads and you tighten it you're fine.

You will need what's referred to as a reverse Torx, or Torx socket for the seat bolt.

If this is the exact model as mine, it's somewhere between 12-18", so it puts the holder right about level with my center console in the '19 CX5. I would recommend a slightly longer version.

Before I switched to a mount that was specifically made for my phone, I used this: http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-Smartphone-iPhone-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B004M8ST3Q/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1414339777&sr=1-2&keywords=arkon+gooseneck

Just loosened a bolt on the passenger seat, slid it under, and bolted it back down.

Served as a nice barrier between the passenger and knocking into my shifter while driving, too.

u/iConoClast04 · 1 pointr/cars

I have one of these installed in my Integra:

http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-Smartphone-iPhone-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B004M8ST3Q

It bolts securely to the seat bolts and the arm is pretty stiff. I have it installed on the passenger seat side and it doesn't get in the way if I have any passenger seat.

Or you could get a dash mat and a suction cup cell phone holder from Ram mounts or Bracketron. I also have one of these and they stay in place most of the time.

There might be one that is made for the SGS3, but I've seen the Exomount recommended many times for being suitable for many phones. I have it for my Galaxy Nexus and it works great plus the price is right.

u/gaudreault88 · 1 pointr/GalaxyNexus

Honestly, I'm using a dashcrab and I haven't looked back, I mean it does vibrate a little when you are videotaping but i don't see that not being an issue with any dock, it fits any phone with no camera blockage and also works if you have a GPS device or someone else wants to use it.

u/thn929 · 1 pointr/Android

This thread praises the Exomount, although I don't believe it has the magnets that trigger the cardock state. With the way this dock holds the phone, it looks like the camera will be unobstructed, which is perfect for a dash cam setup.

If not the Exomount, I might go with the pricier ProClip USA for the custom fitting (mounted directly on top of a vent, to alleviate overheating problems).

I've been using the Montar car mount in the link below. It fitted my Nexus 5 fine, it also fits the nexus 6 with either my ringke slim case or my spigen ultra hybrid case. It is a little tight but the claws will stretch wider than the phone with a case on. You can position it to grab the phone below the side buttons. The mount itself is the best I've ever used, it looks good and doesn't move. I don't know how many mounts I've used or seen in other people's cars that wobble and jiggle around. I've been using a Scosche Magic Mount magnetic mount for a year and a half, and I've been 100% satisfied. I stick the metal plate on the inside of my TPU case (with tissue paper over it so the edges won't scratch the phone). It works great and doesn't interfere with NFC. I don't see myself ever going back to one of those that grips the phone. It's just too easy this way. Portrait or landscape, no problem. Stick it up, pull it off, couldn't be easier.

I like magnetic ones because you just slap your phone on and you don't have to wiggle it in. And you don't have to worry about how big your phone is. Heck mine is able to hold up a tablet Mine is very sturdy.

I have a suction cup mount with a magnet for my phone. There's a metal plate in my phone case. It holds my phone great. No issues through my Speck case for my iPhone 6s. It's small and doesn't block the windshield.

I love it. It comes with two metal plate things and both have a sticky back. I didn't stick it on, but rather let it "float" in the back of my case.

My wife has one too, same setup. It holds her iPhone 6s+ and that's quite heavy.

Also, it has a cord hook on the bottom, so the cable is always within reach and attached to the mount. Highly recommended.

I use one of those as well (this one). Tried four or five other mounts where they were unstable, in a bad location (I would end up punching my phone while shifting), etc. This one holds pretty well and I didn't have to permanently stick anything to my phone, unlike the magnetic ones.

I like the idea of the cravenspeed one a lot more, but it's just way too expensive for what it is. Although mostly it just wasn't available on Amazon.

u/theprotoman · 1 pointr/ft86

I'm using a Ipow Universal One Touch mount. I'm really unhappy with it though. It doesn't feel secure, and bounces around a lot. It's also tough to insert/remove the phone with one hand.

I used to use one of these in my previous car ("car", it was actually a minivan), but it's too big to install in this one. I really want to find something similar, but less obtrusive. Unfortunately I think I'll have to DIY something.

u/Plut0nian · 1 pointr/Moto_Z

I do think part of it is the cd player itself, but the style like the one you had loosened up in my car and any rentals I had. No matter how hard I jammed it in to try to get it to grasp as much as possible, it would always loosen up.

I tried both of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PC29ETE
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VEAF6SG

So when I got the z, I looked for a mount that would have more of a hook on the cd drive slot. Which on the listing also is basically the max side slot: 10 mm. Some of the holders would say 6mm max or just say 4mm, I looked for one with the highest number max. 10mm seemed to be it.

IDK about best, but the best for my 2012 ford focus (stereo still has built in CD player) was this thing that mounts into the CD slot.

I got it when I had a Nexus 6, and we took it on a cross country road trip. It doesn't rely on suction, magnets, adhesive, or anything, so won't do any damage to surfaces. And the 6 was a beast... so I can tell you it is very sturdy.

I agree with you on the Steelie, it's just a deelbreaker the way the magnet works. However, there is a similar design that just uses a flat magnet and if you already have a case for your phone you can just put it in without any adhesive or excessive bump.

The Techmatte MagGrip. Comes in a few different versions (like the tray style you don't want), I have the suction cup version that sticks on my windshield. It's rock solid and have been driving on bumpy-ass Chicago streets without issue now for a week. Also it's currently about $10, so won't break anybody's bank.

I have a Note 9, and use a magnetic base / window suction cup, a thin case with a magnetic plate inside and mounted at the bottom third (to not block the NFC/Pay transmitters) and magnetic USB power cord conversion, and a fast charger.

Stick the phone to the mount, stick the power cord on, done. Just grab it to get out - no buttons, unplugging, nada.

I have two vents I can put the mount in my Cars dash. Not sure if the Kenu will stick out far enough for the top vent which does not close.

I did find this iOttie Which will angle the phone.

its the best mount i have ever used. its a vent mount but they make a cd mount as well that is apparently equally as good. there are 2 things that make it better than any other product on the market.
1: the vent clip is super tight, it will not fall off like so many other ones
2: the mechanism that locks your phone is a button that presses as you put your phone in the mount, you don't have to fiddle around with anything to lock it in place, you just put it in the mount and done. afaik they have a patent on this so every other mount of this type has you squeezing it together or some other time wasting nonsense.
i used to use magnetic mounts but i didn't want to risk the wireless charging malfunctioning cause of the disk & the 3 or so mounts i have used like that usually seem to fall off of the vent once and a while.

also, protip for vent mount users. put your vent mount in the closest passenger side mount and turn the vent off (at least in the winter) to avoid blasting your phone with hot air

The JXD systems look like an oversized Vita, with regular and analog controls.

I suggest taking a look at this controller from 8bitdo. I use a variant of it for emulation and I absolutely love it. Only thing though is if you want to clip it to your phone you have to buy the mount separately and it doesn’t seem the mount officially supports the Core either so you might run the risk of incompatibility.

u/ldAbl · 1 pointr/gaming

There are a wide variety of bluetooth controllers. You might be thinking of those large bulky ones that resemble an Xbox or Playstation controller. While you can get those, there are a lot smaller ones too. There are bluetooth controllers around the same size as your phone. Here's one, coupled with the extender clip

Was super confused if I'd gone back in time, this was posted yesterday:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyNote8/comments/79u1py/pitaka_note_8_case_released_today_only_case_i_can/

That's a fairly expensive case that can do the trick, or you can use this:

u/16JKRubi · 1 pointr/Wrangler

I understand exactly how they work. I've seen others online say they have trouble getting it work, but I know first hand it can work.

First hit on Google for mag mount wireless charger. Just saying you might not want to just write it off.

Samsung has since discontinued it, although I've seen the identical charger under other brands. But I personally use this vehicle dock suctioned to the window to the left of the steering wheel -- sits right against the A-pillar and doesn't block any of my view.

u/jorken24 · 1 pointr/Android

This one is a magnetic mount with wireless QI charging. It includes a flat, metal ring you put between your phone and case. The ring has a wide enough hole to still allow for wireless charging

u/Matt_321 · 1 pointr/GalaxyS9

I have this magnetic wireless car charger for my S7. It works and doesn't interfere with Samsung Pay or my other wireless chargers. The only problem is that it charges pretty slowly. It's fine if I'm not using the phone for anything while it's charging, or using it just for music, but if I'm using Google Maps or Waze for nav then the phone uses more power than the charger can supply so the battery still drains.

u/sidtel · 1 pointr/iphone

I think there are a few. This is one I found just by chance.

The main issue with magnetic holders is that wireless charging doesn't work well through metal (hence the glass backs on the 8/8+/X). This mount seems to use a ring of metal so charging can still be done through the middle but it'll require more precision placing over the regular magnet mounts that just use a plate.

u/flickadinkin · 1 pointr/GalaxyNote8

I bought this one and it works perfectly. Instead of a plate it uses a ring. The ring allows for wireless charging both in the car and on the pad at home.

Edit: in case anyone just skims this post, the link below is to something that doesn't work that I tried.

I'm wondering that too. I switched to iphone x from a Lumia 950xl yesterday, and I tried it with what I had been using before (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GYPMECG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but unlike the lumia (which seems to weigh about the same), the iphone doesn't stick. It slides right off (the lumia never fell off, even on bumpy roads and fast turns). The magnetic pull between the iPhone and the plate is much weaker for some reason. Maybe the iPhone's qi coil is smaller or further from the back surface of the phone? Not sure if there's a limit to how strong the magnet can be but I think a car mount would need a much stronger magnet for this phone.

u/IrisR · 1 pointr/GooglePixel

This is what I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GYPMECG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the back of my case: https://i.imgur.com/ZCgG715.jpg

Wireless charging works fine, the magnet holds incredibly well. I cut off a portion of the old rectangular plate I used for my previous phone and put it at the top for good measure.

Hasn't heated up to any unreasonable temperature so far due to the size of the ring and it isn't interfering with any of my flat qi blocks either. Keep in mind I only use 5w qi chargers so I'm not sure if pushing 10w through would heat it to unreasonable temperatures.

The case is a spigen thin fit. I haven't done extensive testing but 5 watts seems to be about enough to charge it very slightly while using Waze or something else that keeps the screen on while driving.

Edit: The magnets in that circular mount are strong enough to hold a phone with a single large metal plate in their case, as well. I've tested it with my Pixel 2 XL. The cut off metal portion in the Pixel 3 XL case ensures good connection to some of the very small square magnetic vent mounts too, although I'd probably recommend just switching over to qi charging ones now since it's reliable enough.

I bought this magnetic mount and installed it by screwing it into the tray about the stereo. It holds remarkably well and acts as my GPS most of the time. Since the picture, I have cleaned up the wires a bit and the USB comes out of the vent now. I also purchased a replacement tray so if I wanted to go back, I could (since I'd drilled holes in the one in the truck).

u/dansu · 1 pointr/GalaxyS7

You don't really need the metal plate with this phone since the mount will grab onto the wireless charging coils inside the phone. It's not going to be as strong as with the metal plate, especially if you're using a mount with a smaller magnet or if you have a thick case on the phone. I'm using this one from wizgear with a Spigen thin fit case and it works great. Has a really strong hold and has never fallen off. It'll hold my gf's S7 with a lifeproof case too.

Highly recommend! (but I do also have a set of light stands... I demo in a lot of random places and like options).

u/AmericanFromAsia · 1 pointr/Vive

They have to be tilted down. If it's not 45 degrees, you'll get bad gray flickering which will make anyone not used to VR sick. Mine were 8 feet off the ground and I got constant flickering every ~2 seconds just because it was tilted ~25 degrees and not 45. Tripods work the best and will definitely work wherever you go. A clamp with mount screws work second best but there's a chance you won't find a spot for it.

u/cmndr_andi · 1 pointr/Vive

Generally, they are very portable. Just remove the lighthouse from the pipe-clamp (so you can pack the important device securely), release the extended parts and pack it away.

Just make sure wherever you plan to set it up has a flat ceiling which isn't too tall, or a corner you can carefully lean it against.

Alternatively, these clamps look like a good idea if you have something tall to connect them to (like a bookcase) in the correct position in the room:

I got that and was leery of a vent mount, but now I love it. I put it on the driver side center vent on the lowest most slot. Being on the bottom it fits in such a way that the vents can't move downward and bounce around. Its solid and exactly where I want the phone. It works perfect, but my understanding is that mounts like this pass a lot of vibration to the phone which can damage the OIS system so I try to only use it if I need nav.

u/iynque · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

Metal clamps on your phone, with a screw to tighten it down? It’s a no for me.

That seems like it would easily damage your phone or case. It would have to be plastic or padded with rubber or something, and have some other tensioning system besides a screw that would be too easy to over– or under-tighten.

I use a Quad Lock Mount and the Quad Lock case. They make an adapter you can stick to (almost) any case, but using their case is the slimmest way. It also comes with a rain “poncho” that slips over the front for more protection (in a crash) and better water resistance.

I think cases made for mounting are the best solution. Something with rubber straps that react to bumps and vibrations would be good too. I would avoid rigid metal clamps like the one you linked, unless your phone is in a rubber case (that fits this mount), and you don’t mind some divots in your case where the clamps touch it.

If you really want this mount, it’s cheaper on Amazon or AliExpress.

>Also without drilling, what are some options for mounting or setting up the stations? I'm considering command strips as a temporary solution for the time being but are there other mounts or methods I should look into?

Don't try to use command strips; they will not hold them. Really the best solution is to drill and attach them correctly; you can learn to fix holes in drywall really easy. Save that you could use Lightstands with ball head mounts. You could also use contractor poles with Mounting Clamps or if you have a suitable method of mounting you can just use the clamps.

That's what the grips are for. https://www.amazon.com.au/8Bitdo-Xstander-Holder-SFC30-SNES30/dp/B017SFNW0E

There are but also if you have a fold out controller portion built into your phone that means if the controller breaks you're fucked, it adds potential ware from sliding in and out and its probably going to be super small and uncomfortable. I get what you're saying though, i own and loved my PSPGO and its basically the same form factor minus the phone capability but boy is it uncomfortable to use. Served me well for traveling though.
