I use a similar Bluetooth device that plugs into any stereo auxiliary port, works fantastically.

Belkin Bluetooth Music receiver.

My outdated jabra bluetooth visor kit will read me incoming text messages, and I can initiate new text messages and phone calls with it. Not an app, but an excellent function for driving if you have an older car, and not a lot of cash.

And I'm hoping Cortana will be even more fun to use.

I just hold the button on the bluetooth for a bit longer than a tap, then the iphone will do its Siri tone, and I just go from there.

I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Jabra-Cruiser-Bluetooth-Car-Speakerphone/dp/B0036WTC3A/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1348686234&sr=1-4&keywords=jabra+cruiser

(it was cheaper when I bought it, but now that specific model isn't made anymore)

Seeing as Apple devices control the portable audio market, you will find that the vast majority have iPod docks.

Luckily, there is a solution. Buy one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0037LHUSE and you can choose any Hi-Fi system you want, as long as it has a line in. The Belkin one is just an example of such a device, there are plenty of others available too.

I have a mount for my Nexus one on my dashboard and use a "Kensington LiquidAUX" that pipes my tunes into my aux port on my factory head unit.

I did this project on my 2004 Honda Insight a while back, and haven't had any of the problems you're experiencing. What I used:

  • Stock radio that came with the car
  • HON98-AUX
  • Motorola T605

I leave bluetooth on all the time. When I start my car, the T605 (once paired) requests a connection to my phone. I get a series of beeps over the hands-free speaker as it connects. Done. All music plays through the radio via CD/Aux, and all calls come through the T605 and the included hand-free speaker.

This worked fine even while I was running CM7 RC1 a month ago. What components are you using?

I'm not sure exactly what you want exists as a single item, however, you could do what you want with a Bluetooth receiver http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-F8Z492uk-Bluetooth-Music-Receiver/dp/B0037LHUSE and a portable speaker.
It won't have the auto speaker muting, but has the headphone out which is the main thing. If you were handy with electronics you could make a Y lead with a switching jack that disconnected the portable speaker jack when something was plugged in.

You could buy one of these bluetooth receivers > http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-F8Z492cw-Bluetooth-Music-Receiver/dp/B0037LHUSE

Needs a power supply, and obviously a line-in on the back of your head unit.

You ever thought of just getting something like this? It's a cheap option, you just press the button and the rest is voice controlled. Retro fitting anything is going to be outrageously expensive.

I use this Motorola Bluetooth Speaker FM Transmitter. However, looking at that price it obviously isn't made anymore. You can check out this one or this one.

I know it is kinda a bit of a workaround (connecting it to your phone via bluetooth, then tuning the transmitter to an open station) but it has always worked really well for me. There's not a noticeable(to me) lose in quality, no lagging, and no bluetooth connection loss. I really enjoy it and it works well for calls and what not.

Meh sound quality is virtually indistinguishable to a wired solution especially to the masses (most people use the headset that came with their phone).

I also have the same problem with my car not supporting Bluetooth but if you have an aux port there are a huge amount of options at your disposal if you just take a look at amazon. Himbox's Bluetooth solution actually improved my phone use in the car (ie. handsfree use especially with hey Siri)

Yes the removal of a jack can cause issues in the short term, but at the same time there are products that do exist to help people with the transition.

There are many inexpensive devices that cater to your need while also meeting the requirements of the proposed law. Here is the amazon recommended option. Only $25.

SOAIY S-31 Voice Command Hands-free Bluetooth System for Car, Bluetooth Car Speakerphone with Car Charger, Auto Power Off Bluetooth Car Kit, Bluetooth Car Phone, Car Bluetooth Adapter Receiver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DDFBYE4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_AcCizbXS9MTV2

It's a speaker/microphone that goes on the visor. You can hear as well or better than most cell phone speakerphones allow and can have both hands on the wheel.
