That because your smartphone lens is wide angle. Smartphone pics will always make you look small, because they are 8mm up to 35mm lens, wide angle lens distort the pictures to look thinner. That's why insta thots are always looking good on their picture taken with iphones.

Stating that your eyes resemble a 50mm lens, a camera with 50mm or 100mm would make you look appear bigger. That's why you often see bodybuilders like christian guzman using a pro camera. If you don't have a telephoto lens and a DSLR you can buy a telephoto lens for your smartphone here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V95DTP4/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_rfb . It will be awkward at first because you have to stand further from the camera and selfies won't be full body unless you have a big mirror and a fair distance.

What I am saying in words you can digest it graphically here: https://preview.redd.it/vbnlit7ttlk01.gif?format=mp4&s=e7a483456dfa9525539d7433cdc4f2ee12828e63

edit: it's lens not lense

\> it requires your face be in view of the camera

FWIW, I use this clip-on wide-angle lens on my laptop webcam to increase its fov.

I use it for tracking head (eg PoseNet) and objects (eg tracking.js color). But yes, they are compute intensive and high latency. (There's faster code than PoseNet, but I like its robustness, especially under crappy lighting. And I don't have to wear color dots.)

I was just thinking about Arduino 3DOF tracking yesterday. Virtoba's Google Daydream controller is light weight, making it tempting to attach to a tablet pen to give pose, and (with optical tracking) "wave in the air" 3D drawing and GUI interaction, and a touchpad by the thumb. But its not quite light enough to be a happy thing. Maybe I'll try dremeling its case away...

This one is the one I bought. It has the LED light and black light for currency. My lights are full spectrum so I don’t have to turn them off to take pics so I don’t need the light on it. if I was gonna buy another one, I would maybe try to find one with better optics or zoom in place of the light. Just my 2¢

Nice!

I bought this as an alternative to Moment. Have yet to test it out.

Which makes me wonder... what are your thoughts on something like this? <-- Smartphone Lens Kit.

I know, "get a real camera" .. but what if you don't have the money for that and you're a crappy photographer.. could something like this help you take better smartphone pictures?

Edit: I'm an idiot, got excited and paused the video and typed out this post.. continued watching and he goes into this.... blah.. =)

This is the kit I'm currently using, which was recommended to me by my buddy who is an actual photographer. It will work with an I8: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RQRLQYH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Now admittedly I don't shoot a whole lot of moving things on a day-to-day basis, but here's a few photo's I've taken with it. https://imgur.com/a/3s1YrK2

Obviously it won't beat out a monster Nikon and tripod and rig, but it all fits in your pocket and it cleans things up nicely. I have an S10+ which has a decent camera in it, but the before and after is still quite noticeable. And compared to 2017 when I had an S7 at Pocono? Or in 2014/15 when I brought my wife's camera? These are worlds better. Admittedly the UV lenses are silly, but the 2x and fish eye are good as is the wide angle. And once you fiddle with the macro, you can get some INSANE zoom.

I’ve actually found that my old iPhone 6 makes a surprisingly good low power microscope. Just hold it 6-8 inches above your PCB and use the digital zoom. Phone cameras tend to have several times the number of pixels of the screen, so you won’t even lose much quality. You also don’t really need that high resolution of an image anyway. You just need it to be bigger and well lit, so bring a lamp or flashlight.

I haven’t tried it as a soldering aid since I don’t do SMD yet. But I spent many years in biology labs manipulating sub-millimeter crystals under some really nice scopes, and I bet that a little rig to hold your phone up would work fine for hobby projects. And anyway, the price is right.

You can upgrade the rig and get some clip on lenses and a better phone arm

I use this magnifying lamp for a lot of work, but 2.25x isn’t enough for this. I think 5x would be good if they exist.

Headlamps are also an option, and this one does up to 13x.

u/Baldacchino · 2 pointsr/Beekeeping

If you’re really ambitious they have conductive thread that you can sew into the gloves that don’t work. Might be a little tough getting through leather though. And fingerprint will definitely not work.

And if you’re using a smart phone, see if you can find a macro lens attachment for close up shots. link I got a deal on this one for $8 at Amazon.

i think the person who bought, it bought it off wish.com, but this is an amazon link i found for the same thing:

i have an iphone 7 and i used the 0.45x wide lens. i dont actually know anything about lenses and cameras, but thats the lens i grabbed.

thank you so much for the compliment, means a lot.

u/Tommy2Thumbs · 2 pointsr/iphone

I kind of don't like that Olloclip can only be used on one type of phone. I use lenses that connect to a clip that I can attach to my phone even with a case on. I had this since I had a galaxy s3 and using it on my iPhone 6 today. You can buy cheap clip-on lens for cell phones at Amazon.

It looks like this one and also comes with three interlocking parts (fisheye and wide angle) but I don’t remember it being this cheap! I only use it for the microscope lens not really the other two. It’s not letting me link for some reason. I’m on mobile but here is the link that I copied from amazon

and Nightcap Pro on my iPhone. That is basically the entire set up :) (Gotten an extension cord to connect my iPhone to the charger while recording long sessions, a picture every 18 seconds (15 second exposure time and 3 second buffer timer).

Oh and this specific video is using this lens. https://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Clarity-238%C2%B0Field-Android-Smartphone/dp/B018TQTP0C/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1465836261&sr=8-4&keywords=Aukey+lens

Disclaimer, it is only an iOS app but there may be an alternative for android. Not sure how specialized some of their long exposure apps are towards night photography.

I got a kit on amazon. Works well with my galaxy phone and my wifes iphone.

Ignore the dude below...

You can get some cheap lenses for phones that sit over the camera, like these

u/MangyCanine · 1 pointr/Watches

It looks like a nice gift. The issue is that you can get not-quite-as-nice-but-good-enough solutions for much cheaper:

  • I'm using this cheap ~$18 clip-on wide/macro lens. It works decently, giving me maybe a 7x macro capability. There are cheaper ones, and there are more expensive ones. Another good one is the olloclip, which gives you 7x, 14x, and 21x magnifications, but it's ~$70.

(Depth of field is extremely narrow, though.)

  • I use this $40 7x handheld loupe. Metal case and body, made in Belarus. Mine is well-constructed/machined, despite what one of the reviews says.

So, for around $60, I have a decent setup (but I still use a DSLR for wider macro shots). While it's not as nice as a loupe system, it's also hundreds of dollars less.

On the other hand, if he appreciates nice things, and you don't mind spending the money, the loupe system does look nice.

Gladly, it is one of those cheap ones off amazon
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D1CDW9O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qFknDb91G6GDW

I use that with this 10x macro lens attachment for a dslr. My buddy gave me it years back and I just found it. Made by Opteka, I then just hold it over my clip on macro lens and apply a little pressure. Makes it very hard to stay stable. This was just a test to see if it would work.

I just ordered a step up ring from 37mm to 58mm to make my life easier since it was some decent fun.

The honey bees are outback barely flying they are so weighed down by pollen. So cool to watch.

u/ESCEW2 · 1 pointr/Nexus6P

I've been using these and they work great. The fisheye does have a black circle visible and is hard to focus with but overall the kit is really cool.

I need your help in figuring out which mobile phone lens kit I should buy!

Lens kit A

Lens Kit B

Kit A seems to be a quality kit, I like that better but with shipping and all it will cost me about $40 while kit B will cost me around $13, is it worth buying the more expensive kit? I mostly do urban photography.

Thanks!

u/cappehh · 0 pointsr/Coilporn

you should invest in one of these

Yes, you absolutely can mount other lenses to cell phones. There are a ton of cell phone camera peripherals that can aid you in creating visual art. And there is a set of clips that are by Carl Zeiss.
