I read a ton as a kid, here are some suggestions!

  • The Boxcar Children - 4 kids live in a boxcar and get adopted by a rich grandfather and have adventures
  • The Three Investigators - three teen boys are amateur detectives, series ran from mid-60s to mid-80s
  • The Francis Tucket Adventures series - a coming of age western
  • Childhood of Famous Americans series - what it sounds like

The biggest thing reading did for me was to expand my vocabulary and get better at recognizing good writing. Being able to journey in my mind to different situations, worlds and people was fun and I think made me more creative. Let him explore what he truly likes, don't shy away from educational illustrated books which can have fantastic visuals and as long as something is close to his comprehension level don't quit if there are big words it'll help him learn faster. Good luck!

If you switched it from present time to past and back to present, it would be similar to A Girl Called Boy. I'm not aware of a sequel, though.

I have three available on amazon:

Bread for the Pharaoh This is the first one I published, and doesn't quite hew to the "ordinary people against ordinary problems" formula. But it's still a cracking good ancient Egypt story. :)

Pebblehoof This one fits the mold a lot better. A nobody immigrant family pitted against mid-19th century railroad robber-barons.

Blackpelt Talking animal adventure about a beaver on the run from a fur trapper. Definitely in the mold of the wider world gives zero shits about whether the beaver lives or dies.

These are all middle-grade novels, but I've had a surprising number of adults tell me that they too got sucked into the stories.

Was it maybe A Picture of Freedom from the Dear America series?

This might be a little heavy for a 9-year-old, but I highly recommend Soun Tetoken, a story about the Nez Perce as told by a young Nez Perce boy. Much of the action of the story takes place in Montana, including the Bitterroot Valley, Yellowstone National Park, and the Front Range.

The American Girl Series, specifically Kirsten, who I just found out was discontinued as a doll in their catalog in searching for this :(

A Picture of Freedom: The Diary of Clotee . . from The Dear America Series?

u/fanabana · 1 pointr/tipofmytongue

No problem, I remembered them right away! I loved the ribbon bookmark in them. I think the ones your talking about are A Picture of Freedom and Dreams in the Golden Country

Not the answer but if you enjoy reading books where people eat I would recommend Farmer Boy it’s one of my favorite books to read around the holidays because the description of food is so prominent.
