This. On a lark I bought My First Kafka to see how they could possibly make this story suitable for kids.

They didn't.

Not going to be reading that one to the kid anytime soon.

A little bit of digging reveals it to be Bugs by Noel Tait published in the "little guides" series by Fog City Press.

I'm not an expert, but I'm totally your guy because I've done a lot of this "Children's book stuff" recently--well at least the Kindle Ebooks.

Feel free to ask me for more specifics, I'm always willing to help, but what you really need to ask yourself before any of this is... "Art or Money". What no one will tell you is that to get pictures that cover the entire screen of a kindle (this is called Fixed Layout Display) you have to code using KD8... and this process while aesthetically more pleasing than the traditional method severely cripples your market because Amazon only allows specific devices to download such books (The fire, in the states you can use the cloud--but basically your international market is microscopic). The traditional method looks amateurish because amazon will crunch up the image file and place a substantial white border around it--it just doesn't look like a great way to showcase a kids book, and most if not all of the books formatted this way (using Microsoft word or InDesign) come out looking a bit tacky--but they can be downloaded by pretty much everyone.

It sounds like you want to build a fixed layout book (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BJXXZIG) if you're american just dl the free sample to the cloud to confirm--but at least now you know what you're up against. The coding isn't toooo bad either, it's just a bit disheartening to know at least for me, I can't even get my family copies of this, because well we're all Canadian.

  1. You're going to have rebuild the book from different platforms, but you're a step ahead of me in understanding that beforehand because I think it's easier. I'm gonna be doing that for book 4--whereas now, if I wanted to place any of my books from Amazon on say the Ibook store, it could take me 4 hours per book, and that cuts into my fun time!

-CreateSpace will be able to tell you exactly what you want for your size
  • If you're going Fixed layout display you're gonna want 1024wx600h pictures--but if you're going the traditional route, trial and error is usually the best way to go I've heard (700x600 like tbook said might work!).

  1. Again it depends on what format you're going to use. Word will be sufficient, but if you have indesign go that way--and then of course, if you're going fixed display, you're gonna need photoshop, and some sort of text editor (I use sublime2).

If you have any more questions, or if I made zero sense, just ask. I'm always happy to help.

Could it be Mr. Beetle by Satoshi Tada?

>Yoshi loves bugs, and when he befriends a giant, boy-sized beetle, he takes it home to live with him, but Yoshi soon learns that "Mr. Beetle" needs to live in its real home, the forest.

Hmmm... Maybe It's a firefly night? Not sure about the plastic part, but kind of glittery.

Edit: Here's an inside page.

Little bee, little bee, why do you flee! Such a fun book. Has little to do with apiculture, but a fun repetitive theme that my kids love. I'm surprised no one got you this one!

Kids will learn more about beekeepers tools and what an apiary looks like.

Get those kids some books!

I remember reading this book about 40 years ago when I was in kindergarten.

My twin 6 yr olds like reading out loud the fly guy series of books, and of course Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.

I also liked the Dorrie the Witch series by Patricia Coombs, and the Frances the Badger Girl series by Russell Hoban.

Most of the Dr. Seuss books are favorites of my girls as well.

Surprise me :)

I've read some great children's/young adult books at work recently. I work for a museum that stocks excellent children's books from all over the world, and many from local authors (NZ) and many many in reo Maori which can be hard to find.

All the Dear Little Animals, a picture book about little kids that start up a funeral business to bury dead animals. It was a really sweet, thoughtful, quirky picture book.

Mr. Wuffles! This had the best title of any picture book ever, and I love that it's about a very perturbed cat and tiny aliens.

Cecil the Pet Glacier

Cry of the Go-Away Bird I read this over a month while stealing moments at the desk, it's a young adult novel about a young white girl growing up in Zimbabwe. It's not the best book ever I've read on the subject but it covers issues and experiences that make it a worthwhile read (I say that keeping my own 16 year old self in mind).

The Insatiable Moon This was written by a NZ author, and it has been made into a movie (I haven't seen it, but I keep meaning to look for it). About a man who lives in Auckland (in a boarding house with people who have all been institutionalised) who thinks he is a son of God.

  1. I am grateful for my neighbor. My daughter made friends with her son and she has opened her home and heart to both of us. She has watched my girls so I could get a nap, delivered chicken soup when we were sick, introduced me to other moms around the neighborhood, and just generally is an amazing woman and friend. She is just amazing.

  2. I would love this Kindle book about bugs for my younger daughter. It's super cheap too, so you could gift extra folk!

  3. stitchinbitchin loves me

    Thanks for the contest!
