There are lots of great picture books featuring strong, confident girls with dark skin. Try I Am Enough, Princess Hair, Mary Had A Little Glam, I Love My Hair, I Got the Ryhthm, and I Like Myself. If your family is religious, When God Made You could be another good one. I would also suggest a few books that specifically address differences in skin color, such as The Colors of Us, Happy In Our Skin, or The Skin You Live In. As others have suggested, kids absolutely do start seeing race this young and will start to draw their own conclusions if there aren’t ongoing discussions about the topic.
"Taking Flight" I think.

I read a book to my son about this -- it's about a boy who has so much pent up energy he drives his family crazy before he finds an outlet in dance classes. He ends up loving the class. There's a not so subtle theme against gender stereotyping that was great to see in a children's book.
Also, my son picked the book out.
She also has a book about her journey: https://www.amazon.com/Taking-Flight-Orphan-Star-Ballerina/dp/0385755147
John Lennon was raised by his aunt and uncle, because they felt his mother wasn't capable of it. One of his younger half-sisters was adopted at birth by a Norwegian couple and he never met her, the other two were brought up by his mother and their dad until she died and they were sent to another aunt. His song "Mother" is about his parents not raising him.
I read a lot of Young Adult books, so here's some:
I haven't read these but heard strong recommendations:
not quite what you asked for, but a few from the perspective of kids with foster siblings:
And some movies, besides Anne of Green Gables and The Great Gilly Hopkins above
edit to add: Far From the Tree, an adopted teenage girl learns about her siblings, one adopted and one not.
Not exactly the right book, but similar is: Frank Was a Monster Who Wanted to Dance
Ballerina by Peter Sis
Emma and Julia Love Ballet by Barbara McClintock
Lola's Fandango by Anna Witte
My 4 year old who is obsessed with ballet is loving these books right now!
She is ADORABLE!
I think the caption is "But Auntie /u/anditwaslove I need more sweeties"
I am not a child-friendly person. I don't like small people and am not keen on babies, so I would like to nominate /u/Q-Kat's littlest one for the prize if I win. She has this on her WL which I think he would really like. My favourite memory of him is when myself and Q-Kat took him out for lunch with us and despite my obvious discomfort he decided that I was the best thing ever and proceeded to climb all over me and shower me with hugs. It was a reminder that little people are born filled with love and happiness until other people crush it. He's a cute little blighter, even if I have no idea what to do with him :)
My daughter would love this book.

The Dancing Man
I'll have to see if I can dig up our copy of it, but I know the last time I saw my dad reading it (I was a teenager by this time) he had tears in his eyes.
Dr. Seuss is always an excellent choice as well.

I found this to be a good cross of myth/fantasy and read it while in hospital. Took my mind off all of the night interruptions, lol.
The illustrator, Stephen Gammell, also illustrated a children's book called A SONG AND DANCE MAN. It's odd to read it, because it's really cute, but the illustrations have the exact same surreal style to them, minus the gruesome bits.
