A few picture books you might read together -- Lifetimes, which gives a comforting non-religious perspective on the cycle of life and death; Goodbye Mousie, which features a boy about your son's age whose pet mouse has died; and Todd Parr's The Goodbye Book, which is about saying goodbye to a goldfish (from the perspective of another goldfish). Just keep reassuring him that he won't die for a VERY long time, and that death is what happens when animals and people get very old and sick -- it wouldn't be much fun to stay like that forever, so when they get too old and sick to be happy anymore, they stop being alive, just kind of run out of steam. (And hopefully it will be a while before he has to deal with death in a less ideal context...)

Since he's already been exposed to the idea of heaven from your mom, you can tell him that some people believe animals and people go to another world after they die; it makes some people happy to imagine that place and tell stories about it. You can say no one knows for sure what happens after we die, besides our bodies turning into Earth again, so it's okay for everyone to have their own ideas about those things. Personally I view heaven as a comforting story rather than a literal place -- and I think it wouldn't be confusing or a cop-out to describe it in those terms. You can also talk about how even after people and animals die, we keep remembering them, so they're always with us, in a way. The book Always and Forever does a good job illustrating that idea.

It's pretty normal for kids to be freaked out when they first encounter the idea of death; just keep validating his feelings and talking through them, and he'll probably work through it soon.

They want you to take the next 12 months to study up on the difference between red and blue so you'll be prepared to apply again next year.

Here's some study materials

Enh, I've got no desire to prove it to you one way or another. We enjoyed it so much when my daughter brought it home. I was excited to see another version here and thought other people might like seeing one too. My daughter's also reminded me of this book that's one of her favorites.

Does it look like Rainbow Fish on purpose?

DH was widowed and a single dad to a two year old before we met. His recommendations are The Invisible String and The Goodbye Book

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My favorite books as a kid that I remember fondly:

The Rainbow Fish

Stellaluna

Longer books for when she is older

Amelia Bedelia

Madeline

This one is a favorite of mine as well. This Is Not My Hat by the same author is also a great book.

> this book that's one of her favorites

Ooh, haven't seen that one before, but my 3-year old loves this one by the same author.

My son is that age and he loves reading board books with mom and dad (and trying to eat them too). His favorite right now is Moo Baa La La La (and some of his other favorites are Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Pout-Pout Fish).

Around that age he also started wanting to climb out of the bathtub, so we were really happy with this The Fill And Spin Water Fountain Bath Toys - Flow Fill Spin Water Spout Interactive Baby And Kids Bathtub Toys - with Extra Orange Cloud . When he figured out how to spin the googly eyes with his finger, he just sort of cooed at it for a few minutes and it was unbelievably cute to watch (and of course he is now more busy playing with the toy to bother as much with climbing out of the tub).

A coworker gave us a stuffed animal (Friendship League 12" Plush Moose ) that our guy has also enjoyed playing with.

He also loves climbing up the stairs (with mom or dad) and throwing blocks (as well as everything in our recycling bin) down them.

An inexpensive item you could also gift could be a pack of tennis balls. Our son loves their bright color and since we have a lot of hardwood he’s super entertained when I show him how to bounce and roll them.

Hope this helps offer a few ideas.

Could it be Simon’s Hook? It’s a book about a boy being teased and his grandmother tells him a story about a fish and a hook.

It does not seem to have a religious angle, though, so perhaps not.

u/luchs · 5 pointsr/AskReddit

Regenbogenfisch! - don't know whether there's an English version of that book. It's basically about a fish having special scales who feels better than everybody else but eventually gifts them to all his friend so that in the end everybody has cool scales!

Anyone read Rainbow fish?

u/megablast · 3 pointsr/bestof

Another story about how big they can get.

Good looking fish! Did you get the name from the book Not Norman? :-)

It's Nice To Be An Otter

What A Wonderful World

That's Not My Monkey

Monster Parade

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Chicka Chicka ABC

Rainbow Fish

All are board books except Monster Parade and I couldn't find the board book link for Rainbow Fish but that's what we have. His favorites are the top 4 I listed. I've been reading those to him since he was a newborn and loves the pictures. He smiles and giggles at the otters (my fave animal!) and lights up when we get to "the colors of the rainbow" in What A Wonderful World, which is a very special song for my mom and me so it's pretty amazing to pass that onto my son.

I love Jon Klassen, his new one This is Not my Hat and my FAVORITE I Want My Hat Back They are so funny!! I teach preschool and the kids love them!

For the parents: http://www.amazon.com/How-Talk-Kids-Will-Listen/dp/1451663889/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418143809&sr=8-1&keywords=how+to+talk+to+kids+so+kids+will+listen+%26+listen+so+kids+will+talk

I can't recommend this book enough. There is a reason why it is still a best seller. They also have a teen edition as well.

For the kids: http://www.amazon.com/Pout-Pout-Fish-Adventure/dp/0374360979/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418143839&sr=8-1&keywords=pout+pout+fish

There's lots of rhyming, with a cute story, and a good moral at the end. It's one of my favorites that many people don't know about.

u/goldfish_king · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

I love I Want My Hat Back and its sequel, This Is Not My Hat. Because they are very slyly hilarious.

u/albertparsons · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

my oldest hated being read to until he was around 2. even just getting him to sit with a book and play with it was a challenge! we had some success with books by Xavier Denoux, finger puppet books, cutout/peekaboo books like this, and for some reason he LOVED Big Fish, Little Fish. i also picked up some nursery rhyme books because he responded better to having me sing the songs while looking at pictures instead of reading. he's 3 now and will sit through 5+ stories at bedtime if we let him.

u/EatYourCheckers · 2 pointsr/Mommit

I think not sugar-coating it is best. This age your son is able to understand things better than you might think. One other thing I would add to that the previous poster said, is tell him that it is okay to be sad, that you and his dad are sad, too. And that he will probably always be a little sad but the feeling will get easier after a while.

These are 3 books I have on hand. My daughter was very broken up when our dog died, and her Grandmother is failing in health as well:

It's not a dragon, but might you be thinking of A Fish Out of Water?

u/ucmallory · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

My son loves "Hooray for Fish." It's super cute with lots of rhymes and colors--no humans in it. Link here: https://www.amazon.com/Hooray-Fish-Lucy-Cousins/dp/0763639184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494855160&sr=8-1&keywords=hooray+for+fish

Get "Simon's Hook" and read it as a bedtime story. http://www.amazon.com/Simons-Story-About-Teases-Put-downs/dp/0966853016

My daughter's school has gone through this book and others as party of a county project (http://www.projectcornerstone.org/) and it's been helpful in moving past teasing easily and without a lot of drama.

u/NotSureMyself · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

He's cosplaying from my favorite book: This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen.

Just wanted to say, I LOVED your show growing up. It fostered a curiosity in me for the physical world and has led me into the field of science now that I'm in college. I remembered I even had your book, Big Blue Ocean:

http://www.amazon.com/Bill-Science-Guys-Blue-Ocean/dp/0786817577/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343443223&sr=1-4&keywords=Bill+Nye

Thank you so much for your show and I'd support the hell out of another children's science show.

My question to you is: Do you regularly give lectures to colleges or do any speech tours? I'd love it if you ever came to speak at my college or any college in NYC

This book was helpful to us in a similar situation.

The Goodbye Book https://www.amazon.com/dp/0316404977/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_eic1DbR6602HV

I think that you'd probably enjoy this board game, though it is a bit pricey for this contest. I think. Still, something you may want to add to your own list.

For realsies though, this book, it's a sequel to "I Want My Hat Back" and looks to be just as cute.

DK Eyewitness Books: Fish: Discover the Amazing World of Fish How They Evolved, How They Live, and their We https://www.amazon.com/dp/0756610737/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_j2EvDbSRQEB3X

So had one of these about dinosaurs when I was kid (still have it actually) and it was definitely a favorite.

It's not really fishkeeping and more just fish facts

Are you a Pout Pout Fish?

u/miparasito · 1 pointr/Parenting

I love DK eyewitness books for that age. Brilliant photos, lots of information. You can read them together, keeping it simple when kids are really little but then read more of the details as they ask questions or want to know more.

For example, here is the book called Fish: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0756610737

And here's Mammal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0756607035/ref=aw_1st_sims_4?pi=SL500_SY115

Hungry, Hungry Sharks!? It was the first book I checked out from the library when I was young.

u/Not-Now-John · 0 pointsr/marinebiology

Growing up, I was always a huge fan of the eyewitness series of books. I think they're about the right age group too. They have a fish and oceans one.

u/BabcocksAccent · 0 pointsr/hiphopheads

Dude are you kidding me? What part of "defense wins championships, bill belichick" is anything other than bad. I would love to know

You're using his ability to rhyme chair and fair as a nice sound? Holy fuck you have a low standard for musical quality. I've got an amazing lyricist for you if something as basic as this gets your jollies going.
https://www.amazon.com/One-Fish-Blue-Read-Myself/dp/0394800133/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524786796&sr=8-1&keywords=dr+seuss

I really think you'd enjoy this book.

Also truly talented writers don't have throw away sentences. If you read any quality literature, listened to well done lyrics, or read good poetry you'd know this. Unfortunately, it appears your tastes are fairly dumbed down, or simply unaware. It's unclear. But then again you probably think books like "ready player one" are well written.
