Splatoon and Pokemon both have a series of comics

Jaco the Galalctic Patrolman was an 11-chapter manga, written/illustrated by Akira Toriyama, serialized in 2013 in Weekly Shonen Jump both in Japan and America/internationally (in English by Viz). It received a collected release in Japan in 2014, and earlier this year in America from Viz (print/digital).

Shueisha hyped it ahead of time, somewhat spoiling things, as the "shocking revival of Dragon Ball".

Without ACTUALLY spoiling things for you: it's a wonderful comedy series that works beautifully on its own and provides a rather perfect lead-in to Dragon Ball.

Then it got a bonus chapter in its collected release, "Dragon Ball Minus," which may be one of the most derided pieces of Dragon Ball content in decades.

Funny how that works.

You can purchase the print edition from a variety of places (like Amazon), or the digital edition also from a variety of places (like Amazon or directly from Viz themselves).

"Most manga is of a sexual nature" is an enormous overreach. It might be disproportionately represented by English-language internet anime fanboys, but that doesn't reflect the state of manga in Japan. Manga is read widely in Japan, including young children. Some of the manga I've been reading lately include Chi's Sweet Home, a comedy manga about a kitten and her family; Yotsuba&!, a completely wholesome manga about a kindergartener; and a lot of manga based on Pokemon, which are as family-friendly as the Pokemon cartoon that's aired for children for decades.

I'm not defending the sexually exploitative nature of the many manga that are, but saying all manga is sexualized is as absurd as saying most video games are hyper-violent murder-sprees. M rated games exist, but most people play Mario, Pokemon, sports games, etc. Hypersexualized manga exist, but most Japanese people read non-sexual manga like Doraemon and Astro Boy.

Take a look at the historically highest-selling manga in Japan; most of the biggest contain little to no sexual content: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_manga

He is the main character of Akira Toriyama's recent short comedy manga: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman." It's a funny story that takes place in the DB universe.

The manga he starts in takes place before Dragonball begins. And it appears that he returns to earth to star in this movie.

I recently just bought it off amazon. It's a fun read.

NHK Easy Web is perfect for starting out. I've always recommended it for learning kana in context, when repetitive writing of them doesn't seem to help memorize them. Plus easy kanji in context, and easy and simple enough sentences. A bit rough going at first, but you do what you can, and you'll likely get the overall sense of the article.

I also like the Japanese Reader Collection and Yotsuba&! are also excellent and easy enough. Just take your time with them, you'll learn a lot. A little light manga never hurts.

I'd love to recommend the Japanese Graded Reader, and do, but they're kind of pricy for what you get. If you have some spare cash, these are worth it.

u/4649 · 6 pointsr/manga

I second the Ayako recommendation. I'm not sure what your friend's tastes are as far as genre but his Princess Knight series is one of my favorites and is just now being translated.

If she likes Osamu Tezuka, she might also like Yoshihiro Tatsumi's work - he is another artist that helped shape modern manga. His stuff often deals with the darker side of human nature. I highly recommend his short stories. Hope that helps :)

In addition to the other commentors

Kiki's Delivery Service book 1 out of 6, the others were never localized.

Castle in the Sky is based on Gulliver's Travels

The Cat Returns, a manga.

Ponyo is based on The Little Mermaid. Many iterations of this story but why not read a collection of Hans Christian Andersen stories.

The Wind Rises with Jiro's biography and Paul Valéry's poems.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

Ronia the Robber's Daughter if you've seen the co-produced Ghibli TV show.

When's her birthday? It'd be fun to send you an album of Kingdom Hearts music as a gift for her.

Alternatively, the 358/2 Days manga is a must-read for fans of the series. There are 5 volumes, about $10 each

Only two volumes so far. #3 comes out next month.

theres an entire manga series based on this concept - a one sided friendship between a seal and a polar bear.

So glad they are having To Your Eternity Vol 3 as a part of this deal - I got Vol 1 when they had it for Manga Mondays and I'm so glad I picked it up. Its a really great story - definitely a melancholic note to it though. Vol 1 is on Amazon for $8.50, Vol 2 is more or less full price: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Eternity-1-Yoshitoki-Oima/dp/1632365715/

Going to take the dive on A Polar Bear in Love Vol 2. Reviews on Amazon say Vol 1 is a rather quirky story - not what you would expect from the cover. Also, Vol 1 is on Amazon for only $8.87 if you want to take the full plunge (pun intended!): https://www.amazon.com/Polar-Bear-Love-Vol-Shirokuma/dp/0316441716/

u/mak9377 · 3 pointsr/zelda

They are from amazon.com. :P Here is a link(no pun intended) for you.

u/KaboomKrusader · 3 pointsr/dbz

You know that Jaco first appeared in his own Jaco the Galactic Patrolman manga before he showed up in Resurrection F and Super, right? I strongly suggest reading it sometime. You can get the entire one-volume story for well under $10 on Amazon.

u/Scrimshaw13 · 3 pointsr/Gundam

I've had (minimal) luck using the Google Translate app. If you hold it up to smaller amounts of text it does a fairly decent job of giving you an idea of what is going on. Wouldn't try to use it for an entire page of text, though.

Could probably mostly handle these descriptions.

There is also this series that were widely available in the US ~10 years ago. You could probably still get your hands on these. They are broken up by series.

u/NickyXIII · 3 pointsr/zelda

I recently bought the box set of the Manga. I've only read the two Ocarina of Time books, but he isn't a snarky wiseguy in those. Far from it, in fact. There are moments where he has a playful rivalry with Mido, but that is as close as it gets.

Edit: Also, if you like retellings with differences in plot points (mainly, if you can divorce yourself from the original) and you enjoy manga, I would recommend picking them up. I'm not a huge manga person and I'm sure that there are better manga out there, but I enjoyed the ones I have read so far.

An example of needing to divorce yourself: Volvagia is purchased by Link as a child in Hyrule Market, and subsequently set free. Link then has to make the tough choice to kill Volvagia in the fire temple because he has been cursed

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/zelda

I got my set from Amazon.

Link? The one I'm looking at says 640 pages and 5.8 x 8.2 so it's going to be the same size as the Zelda Legendary Edition.

u/blackmoon918 · 2 pointsr/zelda

If it's the manga you're looking for,

http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Box-Set/dp/1421542420/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320023635&sr=8-1

If it's the original Legend of Zelda comic you're looking for (based on the first two games), they've been out of print since 1993. (I'm guessing this may be the one you're looking for based on the number of volumes that were released). eBay and similar sites would be the best way of collecting them.

u/dat_face · 2 pointsr/zelda

I'm surprised you don't have the Manga comics...

u/GoshDarnBatman · 2 pointsr/zelda

If you're interested in more, there's a box set of ten books.

u/Tonitonigo · 2 pointsr/manga

You could, but it will probably be cheaper for you on Amazon.com. Here's volume 1 of One Piece to get you started: https://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Vol-1-Japanese/dp/4088725093/

I've bought manga in Japanese from Amazon.com myself and have had zero issues. You won't find everything here, but you should be able to get pretty much all of One Piece in Japanese this way, and for a relatively good price.

u/NexusT · 2 pointsr/manga

Hey, I originally read this series in English around 1997 when it appeared in Mixxzine. It has a complicated publishing history in the English language market.

First it was published by Tokyopop.(12 volumes)
It was later reprinted under Del Rey's lineup.
[Finally its was published by Kodansha US in 2011.] (http://www.randomhouse.com/book/85741/parasyte-2-by-hitoshi-iwaaki)(8 volumes)
Kodansha US reprinted it this year.

Here's the original Tokyopop/Mixxzine release for £2.00 bear in mind the chapters may not overlap exactly so you might also need vol 3 from this print.

Of course if you want to wait it out the Vol 2 prices should hopefully drop as the reprint copies make their way onto the market.

Before I get to the list, I'll mention that it may not seem like I'm super active, but I was away from the sub for a week or so, but if you look into my posts from before that, you'll see I'm pretty active. :)

1.) Something that is blue. - I mean, it's literally blue.

2.) Something that says summer. - What says summer better than SURFING!?

3.) Something food related that is unusual. - It's a Kit Kat. But it's GREEN TEA flavored!

4.) Something you want to gift to someone else, and tell me why. - I've been trying to get /u/quickwittedslowpoke to buy this manga because it's awesome, but she hasn't yet. I really want her to read it!

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! - Shameless shilling. My friend wrote this book and I want him to become famous! :D

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! - I don't really have a great reason for this, it was just on my mind because I had considered getting it as a gag gift for my uncle's birthday since his lucky number is 113 and that Pokemon is #113, but I didn't end up doing it since it wouldn't have arrived by his birthday (which already passed).

7.) Something related to dogs. - I have no idea what GSD is, sorry D:

8.) Something that is not useful, but so awesome you must have it. - It's literally just a statue. It doesn't do anything but look cute. But she's one of my favorite characters :D

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? - This is one of the best Anime films of all time. Even if you're not into anime, I still highly recommend it. It has won COUNTLESS awards already. It's a pretty big deal in the anime community. It's got a great plot and it's so sad that if you don't cry, you have no soul.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. - Zombies can't swim. Foolproof plan. They'll eventually decay in the sun and all die within a few days, and you'll be out on your cool ass boat, safe from the chaos.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. - I know it seems a little silly, but I'm trying to learn to cook better, and I just don't really have very good cooking tools...

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. - Fun fact: I obsessively clean my ears. :I

13.) Something fandom related. - It's three fandoms in one! Super Smash Bros, Nintendo and Final Fantasy! :D

14.) Something ridiculously priced, more than $10,000. They exist, y’all. - Because it's eleven times what you asked :)

15.) Something with sharks or unicorns. - It was actually pretty decent.

16.) Something that smells wonderful. - At least I think it does. Needs lots of sugar though lol

17.) A toy that you wanted or had when you were a child that was the best ever, or (if it’s not on amazon) a toy that you think is pretty cool now - Does this count? I had the original back in the 80s/90s, and this is a new model with packed in games. But yeah, this shit was my childhood!

18.) Something that would be helpful for writers. - I mean, really, what're you gonna do with unsharpened pencils?

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. - The Precure anime franchise is one of my guilty pleasures, and this character, Cure Peace, is my favorite character in the series! :D

20.) Something that is just so random and weird that it makes you laugh. - Because why the fuck not?

u/MrManicMarty · 2 pointsr/anime

There's a manga adaptation of Star Wars: Lost Stars?! Holy crap, that's kind of awesome! I really liked Lost Stars, and a manga version would be dope!

Also the manga version of Hero Academia seems like it's pretty cheap on Amazon... tempting! But... anime... I prefer anime...

u/ProdigySim · 2 pointsr/japanese

Practically every manga I've seen has furigana on it. Anything intended for teens and below will have them for sure.

You can buy them online fairly cheap now as well, though shipping will probably take a while. e.g. https://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Vol-1-Japanese/dp/4088725093

Edit: one other note, I've found that most shounen manga (one piece, shingeki no kyojin, etc) will contain a lot of world-specific language or dialects. If you really want something more focused on real world language usage, you might try to find a story more based in modern-day society rather than a fantasy world.

u/alireyns · 2 pointsr/baduk

you can find them all over amazon :) just search “Hikaru no Go manga” and they should come up. The anime, I’m quite sure, is based on the manga. See the link below for Vol 1:

Well you can buy the volumes off amazon (with Kindle versions available), if that helps. They're relatively inexpensive.

u/wiseteria · 2 pointsr/manga

So according to mangaupdates it's not completely translated.

Most likely because VIZ Media licensed it.

You can get the whole thing really cheap online (~$10):

Amazon

BookDepository

RightStuf Currently they have at least 33% off all Viz titles so now's a great time.

IMO you might as well pick it up if you like Dragon Ball. It's really not that expensive and probably no one will pick it back up to translate it. Maybe after the group translating Dr. Slump is done with it, they might do it, but it's not very likely.

Totally not the same dude. That guy is Middle aged. This kid looked similar only in one picture.

Also, the guy is holding a copy of Lucky Star Vol 1 Like he's proud of it, so I assume, being a Manga fan as so, he got it when it was released in 2009 in the US, also assuming its not a Japanese or early release copy that would have released sooner. That would make Kenny 10 years old at the time. So definitely not him.

Manga seems an obvious choice here, something like Yotsuba to could be fun. Others to check out are Kamikaze Girls and Nana

In terms of mythology and folk lore:

Lafcaido Hearn's ghost stories are quite fun.

As is this book on Japanese monsters - The Book of Yokai

Lastly, I am a literature person so I have to recommend at least one piece of literature. Perhaps something like Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen or Soseki's I Am a Cat could be good a young reader and serve as an introduction to Japanese literature. Though admittedly the Soseki may a little much for 12 years old. It is a great book though!

Of course. :P

Ah I see. Well I think that could be a fun comic to draw. You should read the Zelda manga comics for visual reference. For the story, I think you could make your comic unique from a lot of the other stuff out there by really focusing on making one of the characters compelling. I love Zelda, but I feel the characters are really flat in terms of development.
