It's funny but I was semi serious lol. I have this album that my wife rolls her eyes at when I pull out. The dude lays down a killer woodblock solo lol. The recording is off the charts as well.

The songs are from this album.

I think of anything by Li Xiangting. His music has an improvised flow that feels Taoist to me.

Edit: reviewer agrees with me on the linked page: "This CD is the sound of the Tao Teh Ching translated into music. -- Laura Silvestri, Innerchange Magazine"

And http://angellam.com/bio/ seems to be one of most interesting contemporary classical composer but it is very hard to find actual recordings here in Europe, beside a few badly converted videos on YouTube and some great files on her site, but in flash :/ the few compositions I've heard are incredible, she's a great composer.

edit: i just made thread in r/classicalmusic about a piece by Angel Lam

Sounds like lots of traditional Chinese or Japanese music with symphonic additions. I don't have any specific recommendations as I don't know offhand any with a symphony, but here are some quick Amazon searches for Chinese music:

When I have time to stop and enjoy my tea, I'll often listen to Hong Ting and sometimes Tinariwen
Both have a general mellow tone, but still maintain some liveliness.
