Amazon (directly not third party sellers on Amazon) offers free shipping both ways as well as a 20% discount to new shoe store e-mail subscribers, bringing Bushacres to $59 a pair.

u/Sheehan7 · 7 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I like the boots they are these but I agree not in this fit, they look better with looser cut jeans and a flannel.

That's a pinroll. Here is the video I used to learn that

u/over-my-head · 5 pointsr/FrugalMaleFashionCDN

The Johnston & Murphy Melton Oxford is the shoe to buy. It is the best quality you can get in Canada at around the $200-$230 CDN pricepoint, before jumping up to ordering factory seconds of the Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenue, Carlyle or Park Avenue, which WILL end up costing you between $315-$350 CDN, after exchange rate, border processing through DHL, and shipping are factored in. Even if the shoes are on sale in the AE shoe bank for $170.

I know this because 8 months ago I ordered a pair of AE Fifth Avenues for Brooks Brothers during the last big sale, and the shoe that was $169 initially ended up costing me $315 in the end, given that shipping from Ohio was $40 USD, processing was $10, and exchange was terrible. On top of that, the shoes don't even fit, because the 5 last, which is used on the Fifth Avenue, Carlyle, Park Avenue and others, is too narrow.

Back to the J&M though: this shoe is, like I said, the best quality you can get around the $200 CDN range. Right now it is on sale in 8.5D at amazon.ca for $228.

It is the same price on the J&M website too.

I have seen it at the Bay as well, though it is not listed online currently. And I have also seen it on deep discount on amazon.com, despite it being in USD. I snatched mine up when it dropped from $175 USD to $110 USD, which made the exchange and duties worth paying for.

Anyways, here is why you should buy this shoe, given your budget:

AE factory seconds will cost you $310+ to order from the U.S. First quality AE "Bloor Streets" (Park Avenues) will run you $500 CDN+ tax at Harry Rosen in Toronto. But the J&M Melton is not only much more affordable, it is miles ahead of all the other mall grade crap you would still spend up to $160 CDN on at Aldo or the Bay.

The main shoes I see at the Bay and in malls are usually Bostonian, Florsheim, Aldo, Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole, Pegabo, and Stacey Adams. In almost all cases, these are all overpriced crap that you will still end up spending up to $150 on anyways.

Bostonian and Florsheim used to be good, but now, alongside the rest of the shoes in the list (except for a couple Stacey Adams products), they are shittily made in China, with corrected grain leather, and glued soles, which significantly reduce their durability and longevity, while also reducing their comfort. Not only are the designs ugly, but they are terribly built, with terrible quality control, and terrible materials. And they will still run you over $100-$150 CDN.

Meanwhile, the Johnston & Murphys range from $160 CDN on sale to $230, yet are miles ahead of all those previously mentioned brands. Of course, they are not at AE level, but the Meltons in particular are goodyear welted and made with full-grain Italian calfskin. My pair is beautiful, and is very close in appearance to the $500 Park Avenue. They are leather soled as well, and while they aren't made in the USA like AE, they aren't made in China either (made in India).

If you're willing to pay $200, I'd definitely make the jump up to $230 and get the J&M Meltons. It's a significantly better shoe than any other option in that range, and well well worth the bump up from Bostonian or Kenneth Cole or Aldo. Yet it's a lot cheaper than what it will cost just for you to get second-quality Allen Edmonds. On top of that, unlike the AE shoes on the 5 last, the Melton fits true to size. So you don't have to worry about sizing up or down. If you are sized as 8.5D, then order an 8.5D.

And if you're patient, you might even snag em on sale. Though they aren't at the moment: https://www.johnstonmurphy.com/mens-sale-shoes#srule=PriceLowHigh&sz=1000&start=0

Brown chukka boots fit the bill. Check out the Desert Boots and Bushacres from Clark's.

Asked this in MFA but didn't get an answer, hopefully you guys can help me out.

Sizing help for Red Wing 1907.

If Vans sz10 and CDBs sz9 fit me perfectly, and I owned a pair of Iron Rangers sz9.5 which fitted a bit big, should I go with 9 or 9.5 in 1907s?

Also, I prefer them in copper rough & tough, but on Amazon's pics (http://www.amazon.com/Red-Wing-Heritage-Classic-1907/dp/B0018DZCRY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) they are branded, is this Amazon's mistake? Otherwise I guess I'd go for copper.

cognac sneakers pair great with jeans and casual chinos. they'd prob even work with black. which shoes you mean specifically would probably help us be more helpful

grey 511s go with basically everything indigo 511s do. i'd avoid wearing the same shade of grey with them, but just about anything else will look great.

this graphic tells you the amazon price of CDBs throughout the year. it looks like it's fairly consistent, and maybe more consistently expensive in the warmer months

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/TeenMFA

Just ordered a pair of CDB's in beeswax leather (of course)

And a pair of thorogood's in Tobacco

$ 200, not bad for what will be about 70% of my footwear from now - march

Thanks these boots aren't on the top of my priorities but I'll keep looking. Does Clarks ever have in store sales? I noticed I have one relatively close to where I live so I want to go try a pair on to see what size I need. Never too early to start a Christmas list I guess.

EDIT: Could you give me a link to the leather CDB? All I have been finding is the suede.

EDIT 2: What is the difference between the Clarks Desert Boots and Clarks Men's Bushacre 2 Boot? They are both leather but the Bushacre are significantly cheaper.

u/EdwardDupont · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Standard shipping is $7.95 on Nordstrom. Pic for size 9.

Amazon with Prime size 9 link is $55

Sizes all have different costs for Amazon. OPs website is the same price. So you'd just have to get lucky basically.

u/-BEEFSQUATCH · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

It appears these Bushacre 2 boots are on sale on Amazon.. Does anyone anyone know if this reduction is going on for a while or should I buy them soon?

u/Jduper · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Thanks for all of the information. I am willing to slide that price point up a bit, but I don't want to get carried away. The 20% off coupon will be huge.

I went over the Nordstrom Rack today and tried on a bunch of stuff (none of them came in wide :( ). Most everything was way too tight, but surprisingly a pair of 14M Clarks (these ones,$72 on amazon). Felt wide enough, but too long since my heel kept sliding up. I probably will stop back in and try a 13M just to see how that feels. I like the look of the Clarks a bunch, but I am looking for something a little bit more, say, rugged.

I am going to keep an eye on those Chippewas.

Thanks again for the advice.

Another repost:

So, the cementing on my pair of Bushacre 2s (dark brown) finally gave out.

I'm interested in finding a similar pair that will last more than a couple years: I liked the shape, the color, the style of the leather, the relative stiffness/structure of the leather, etc. It doesn't need to be identical, and I'm open to going in a slightly different direction, but something that basically serves the same purpose.

Advice on a Goodyear/Blake-stitched pair with a grippy sole that won't break the bank? I'd prefer to avoid suede because I deal with significant snow in the winter (and because I've already got a pair of Loake Kemptons). The Red Wing Weekenders seem pretty close, but I've heard some middling things, so I'm not sure what to think there.

Heard good things about them but don't know if there worth the price. Hows the sizing on them as well? usually go 10-11 on sneakers. Also, thoughts on the color?

CDB's are nice, have you seen the Bushacres? The sole is rubber, and would be ideal for slippery conditions. You can also sign up for a 20% off coupon for any shoe purchase off of Amazon.

The Bushacre's sole supposedly isn't as comfortable as the crepe sole on the CDB, and I can believe that. Keep that in mind while you consider.

If I were in your position, I'd wait for something like the Georgia Giant boot sale that /u/sharpic mentioned. I got the boots for $50 shipped, and they're wonderful in person. Full grain leather at that price was too good to pass up, but they're out of stock now. A similar sale may happen so it'd be good to keep an eye out.

If you're determined to buy, I'd check these out in order:

  • Chippewa's. You can get these at around $80 shipped with the 20% off Amazon coupon. Good shoe, vibram sole, good leather, good reviews. Search MFA if you want more info.

  • Thorogood's. Cost more, different look; depends on what you like. Good reviews, good leather, check MFA for more info.

  • People also swear by Bean Boots. Check out Jdbee's write up on them, it's really neat.

  • I'd also suggest Ll Bean's Katahdins, Red Wing Iron Rangers, Red Wing Beckmans, and others. Those get pricier though, and it seems that you're looking for the best bang for your buck at under $100. So I'd check out the ones I listed.

I've already mentioned getting a pair of Red Wings for $67, and the Georgia boots for $50. I also was able to buy some Eastland Lumber Up boots from American Eagle for $50. All of those purchases were made when a good deal popped up. I was in the market for boots, but I waited until a bargain came up to pull the trigger. Patience pays off.

If winter gets here and you haven't found a deal, the Amazon boots should stay at the same price and you could go with one of those. You can also browse around other places and see if there's anything you like. Try for full-grain leather whenever possible. Genuine leather =/= good leather: it's crap.
u/WascalyWabbit · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

The J&M Meltons get recommended quite a bit for cheap oxfords. They're expensive at the current $175, but they do drop under $100 and with the 20% coupon (if you have it), you can get it for even lesser. The quality seems to be quite good too

u/Woollen · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Any suggestions for items to purchase?

I plan on picking up a pair of Bushacres (my first pair of boots!) and need to spend another $100 or so for free shipping to my country.

I was thinking about possibly grabbing another pair of boots, although I'm open to other suggestions!

Chippewa Apache, Thorogoods and these Doc Marten's look good. Although I'm not sure whether they'll be too bulky / big for me.

u/Wave_Existence · 2 pointsr/BurningMan

I bought a pair of these for my first burn and they worked great. Tough, lightweight, look good and reasonably priced. Taking them back out to the playa this year, we'll see how they hold up for repeated burning.

u/CuriousRover · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Stylistically, I agree with the moc toes of the round toes. They just appeal to me more. What do you think of Amazon for shoes?

I'm a fan of the 1907 that you originally suggested as well...

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Wing-Heritage-Classic-1907/dp/B0018DZCRY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397093295&sr=8-1&keywords=red+wing+heritage+1907

Well, I'm willing to commit as soon as I find a pair that I'm comfortable with. And right now it seems like 1907 vs 875.

u/JoCoLaRedux · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

I was looking at those, myself. They're some of the best looking chukkas I've seen, but the reviews on Amazon, Shoebuy, and Zappos aren't particularly encouraging.

u/-diabolique- · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I am looking for black cap-toe oxfords, and would like to stay under $125 if possible. I’m thinking of the Johnston & Murphy Melton, but are there any other shoes I should be aware of?

u/bmaharg · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Thanks, I looked at the boot guide, I know I need something different. Yes I am more of a rugged dressing person. I do wear clothes that fit, I wear straight leg jeans and athletic or trim fit shirts. I cannot spend 300 on boots right now, I am hoping to spend less than $100.

Clark's CDB's... Do people size down?

I've been wearing a crepe sole pair (size 12) for awhile... but just ordered some new ones with the leather soles. They feel A LOT tighter then my crepe sole pair.. maybe because they're not broken in? They're both size 12.

I'm just wondering if I got a size too small because according to Amazon 64% say this fit as expected. All other shoes I wear size 13.

I got mine from Amazon, from the Originals series too. Most comment on there, MFA, and everywhere else say that you should order at least a size down (in American sizes). I'm a 13 and I ordered a 12. I had to put a heel cup in mine so they'd be perfect, so I think I might even fit in 11s.

Not made in the US, but clarks (from England) are awesome. The brown beeswax finish would be great with any non-black suit.

Then, unlike most other dress shoes, you can wear them every day with your jeans and they look just as good.

u/Daeus07 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

> If not these, then what? You provided EXCELLENT explanations of everything that you don't like, but you've failed to suggest any non-sneaker alternatives.

I suggested sneaker alternatives because they fall in the same price range and are the same level of formality that the Skechers are meant to be. If you're looking for sharper leather shoes Clarks Desert Boots, Bucks, or a thrifted pair of Allen Edmonds McAllisters all fit the bill.

> While "you get what you pay for," you must understand that a single pair of shoes that runs $100 or more is just not something that everyone can afford.

None of these are currently $100 or more. If you can swing $60 for Skechers, you have $60-$70 for a different shoe. I'm a college student who pays my own tuition, and volunteers at the lab in my free time. The occasional odd job between those provide my entire entertainment/clothing budget. My 3 pairs of shoes are $3 thrifted black cap-toe oxfords, $19 nordstrom brand bucks, and $160 work boots I saved six months for. If $60 is too much for you your options are to wait for sales (end of a season is best for clothing), hits the thrift store, or stop worrying about fashion because you have bigger things to deal with.

> The shoes you suggested as alternatives are either skateboard shoes or a little childish.

Vans is a skate shoe company, but the authentic and authentic lo pro are clean, canvas, and unobtrusive. They have none of the faults that the problems of the Skechers. Keds are known for women's shoes, but the Champions are also sleek and unobtrusive. Same with the frequently-teenage-associated Jack Purcells, especially if you get the low top without the rubber toe cap. Again, sneakers were suggested because that was the design of the shoes in the original post. They're not the only shoes out there if you don't like them.

> Explain cheap leather to the unwashed.

In ascending order of quality

  • Bonded Leather: Most super cheap leather is bonded leather. Bonded leather is leather fibers caked in glue then pressed into shape. That's what the Skechers were, and that's what you should really try to avoid for all the reasons listed in my last post.

  • Suede: Suede is the bottom fibrous layer of the hide. While it looks nice and holds up better than bonded leather, it's thin and gets damaged by rain and salt. Sometimes one side is painted over to give it the appearance of top grain leather. The product is often called "genuine leather".

  • Top Grain Leather: Top grain is the uppermost portion of the hide. It looks like high quality leather, as evidenced by the epidermis. It is, however, still thin and will not age well.

  • Full Grain Leather: This is the full hide. It contains both the top and bottom layers unsplit. It's thick, develops a patina (wear pattern particular to leather), and if treated it will last decades.

Boots and shoes with full grain leather generally start at about $150 and go up from there. Considering the cost of replacing lower quality leathers though you can often save money on the long term by buying better leather shoes first. If a $60 bonded leather shoe lasts you a year, a $300 full grain shoe need only last 5 years to cost the same and will often last far longer than that. If you need shoes right now for a job interview or to wear to work, go ahead and get some cheap oxfords or derbies. Otherwise I urge anyone to save their money for a while and get better leather.

    > I'd apologize for the snarkiness, but I mean it in earnest, so I won't. If you're going to attack something, fine. But try to take it a step further and recommend meaningful alternatives

I understand that you feel like I attacked shoes you like and possibly own, so you feel I've attacked you or your decisions. I'd like to urge that that is not the case. The previous post was not aimed at you. It was a reply to a college kid asking what was wrong with that pair of Skechers. That's exactly what I addressed in only the detail relevant to the context. If the advice wasn't perfectly suited to fit your lifestyle as well, I'm sorry but that's what happens when you weren't the one who asked in the first place.

Also, read the guides. A lot of us put a lot of work into centralizing and writing that information for everyone.

> Botton down and jeans, but most button downs are plaid

No... no, they aren't. I mean, maybe in San Francisco they are, but not in the real world.

Anyway, this is what I'm rocking this fall day:

Jeans, V-neck tee, sport coat, Dr. Marten Tobias boots (worn on the inside of my pants, I might add).

Options exist. Break away from the herd, my friend.
