I home roast and if I buy coffee it will NEVER be pre-ground. The only time I break both of these rules is when it comes to Cafe du Monde. I've tried adding chicory myself but I don't see the point when CDM already does such a good job.

Edit: as others have pointed out to me, CDM canned products are garbage. It is all I've tried other than my own attempts to blend coffee and chicory. Until I try the real thing, I'll keep drinking my canned crap. Thanks for the feedback!

Interesting, because I have the exact opposite experience. Want to buy a book? Cheaper on Amazon than in the store. Want to buy some electronics? Cheaper on Amazon. Literally any item at a Staples can be found cheaper on Amazon.

And they have a ton of items that are just not easy to find physically. A while ago I bought some Vietnamese coffee. I'd have to travel 1.5 hrs each way just to check if the local Vietnamese import store has it.

u/murfflemethis · 11 pointsr/LateStageCapitalism

Go to your nearest Asian market and get you some Ito En Green Tea. It's completely unsweetened so it takes some time to get used to the earthy flavor, but it is real green tea from Japan. I have it in my house pretty regularly and have come to really like it.

u/unity2178 · 10 pointsr/Coffee

I'd suggest using Trung Nguyen coffee and Longevity Sweetened Condensed Milk for the closest to what you can get in Vietnam.

Seriously, the Trung Nguyen coffee has ruined me to anything else, it's got this naturally sweet, almost cocoa-like flavor that is amazing by itself.

u/Neroess · 9 pointsr/todayilearned

See, when I buy compostable k-cups I'm talking about these. Do they still have an issue breaking down? Seems like it's mostly just coffee and filter.

I like Yorkshire tea. I don't really need 1200 tea bags, but they last quite a while.

Ok, here's the totally non-essential, and stupidly expensive for what it is, but I won't go out even overnight without is my Nalgene coffee press or the GSI Nalgene coffee filter. The filter weighs nothing, it's the coffee and sugar that gets you. Now, if you are good with typical Maxwell House/Folger's coffee, and you drink it with cream and sugar, there is one good alternative. Maxim Korean Coffee Packets are amazingly good. I use 2 packets every morning and sometimes again in the evening. The 100 pack does me good for about a month. If you're reading my post, checking out the product, and saying "Really, um... no.", then you are in the same shoes I was in until I tried it. Has sugar and cream already in it.

I'll also second the battery pack. Those who claimed that pillows and camp shoes are non-essential, I beg to disagree! That's like saying Gold Bond powder is non-essential! I'll admit that I'm not UL, but tax, tag, and title, out of town I'm weighing in right around 30 with 2 liters of water and food. Since I weigh 250, it's light enough.

u/FaKeShAdOw · 7 pointsr/tifu

OP, if you're a big fan of green tea you should probably look into getting your own stash so this won't ever happen again. :P

Powdered matcha stuff like this will go rather well if you just boil some water or if you use those Japanese water boilers. It's not in bags because it's green tea, yo. Shit doesn't need to be in bags, even if you typically hate leaves floating around.

Assuming you live in an area easily serviced by Amazon:

Care Du Monde is a shitty alternative. I'm not sure why people suggest it. For starters, it's a blend of arabica and robusta, when most of the street coffee here in Saigon is 100% robusta. Secondly, Viet coffee doesn't have chicory. Thirdly, Viet street coffee is roasted with butter and sugar and is the only coffee in the world, that I know of, that is roasted that way. The coffee I linked to is roasted that way plus they add cocoa. It's the stuff I use at home and is the closest I can get to the same caphe sua da that the lady on my street sells.

Finally, re: yogurt - Viet yogurt is made with condensed milk. I'm not sure what the equivalent to that would be. If you want to make a caphe sua da (condensed milk) you should hit an Asian market and try to find Vietnamese condensed milk because it tastes a lot different then western.

I'm really into the single serving Mountian House meals, they taste better than what I make at home. Walmart carries them like $5 each. One for breakfast, one for dinner, and for lunch snacks, Oh! Ricey instant noodles (way better than ramen) or whatever for lunch. Throw a couple Vinacafe sachets for the morning coffee and you're all set!

I'm not Asian but I've found out that the Asian markets (specifically Vietnamese) carry the BEST food for backpacking. They're big into freeze dried, dehydrated stuff with tons of flavor their culture isn't big into refrigeration.

As far as stoves go? I use this one, works great. Oh, and a Sawyer mini filter.

u/DashFerLev · 6 pointsr/Coffee

As far as I understand the light roast push, it was a trend started by Starbucks in response to the "Charbucks" meme and, well, once Starbucks does something it's lodged in the public's brain.

Folgers is definitely not bad for $3/lb coffee.

Would I rather spend $20/lb on a pound of Stumptown coffee? Yes. But some people A) Can't afford that. B) Don't think it's worth it. C) Genuinely only drink coffee for the caffeine. I'm lookin at you, "Death before Decaf" people.

This is like when Chipotle hit the scene and Taco Bell was like "Holy shit we have to start trying now, you guys!"

u/dabuzar · 6 pointsr/morbidquestions

On amazon this is the first result for coffee.

That container has 864 grams of coffee ground.
Google says that 100 grams of coffee beans has 838 mg of caffeine.
838 mg 8.64 = 7240 mg of caffeine. in that 30.5 oz coffee container.

Average weight globally is 62 kg.
The lethal dose of caffeine is 192 mg per kg.
62 kg
192 mg = 11904 mg of caffeine required to kill the average human 50% of the time.

You won't die from eating that much coffee ^^most ^^likely but you would experience an irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, and hallucinations.

u/canekicker · 6 pointsr/Coffee

Cafe (Ca Phe) Sua Da is a really common Vietnamese drink that incorporates condensed milk with coffee that often has chicory as an adjunct. Cafe Du Monde is the most common brand of coffee that I've seen but you really can use anything.Note that it has chicory as an adjunct but a good dark roast can do the trick. They're made using a phin which as you can see, is fairly straight forward metal filter that relies on gravity and a finer grind to extract. It's really easy to make and quite delicious though I treat it more as dessert than coffee.

If you live in an area with a decent sized Asian population, you should be able to find it fairly easily as it's crossed over into non-Vietnamese shops. A good bet would be a pho shop or failing that, a bubble tea shop. However, if you live in a place that has a large Vietnamese population (e.g LA or Houston) you may be to explore Vietnamese coffee beyond cafe sua da. Houston, for example, has Long Coffee which does a variety of Vietnamese style coffees, all which are delicious. At the same time, one of Houston's more famous coffee shops Blacksmith does their own version of cafe sua da as the owner is one of the biggest proponents of Houston's Vietnamese food scenes.

Quick tip : you can drink it straight up but it's served with a cup off ice so once it's finished brewing, mix the condensed milk in and pour it over the ice. The residual heat will melt the ice, dilute the drink and bring the sweetness down to something I find more palatable.

What flavor? I'm using these myself.

u/NinjaMcGee · 5 pointsr/bugout

Completely dependent on your location and availability, but Asian markets here in the West coast carry 10-packs of soup in different flavors all dehydrated about the size of a larger ramen seasoning packet for about $1.20. They come in a variety of flavors (miso: tofu, green onion, bean curd, etc.), I’ve eaten some over 2 years past shelf life and you’d never know it was expired. Plus they come with seaweed (a good source of vitamin c). You can also buy a jar of condensed seasoning (powdered) that will last about 40 meals - longer if rationed - they’re typically $4-6.

The Asian markets also sell coffee packs with creamer and sugar blended in shaped like Starbucks Via packets. I bought them on sale last time, 100-pack was $5.

u/kcsquared · 5 pointsr/tea

My favorite A pound of Rooibos for $14. I drink it daily. Hot and cold. Rooibos is a low tannin red bush tea so it's pretty much impossible to make bitter. You can boil it and you dont have to be precise with your temps. And zero caffeine. Boil it with some fresh ginger to kick it up a notch.

Found out about this stuff in korea. Instant coffee with the cream and sugar pre-added into the packets. Turns whatever the shit that comes from the DEFAC into something tolerable. u/laststance · 3 pointsr/videos

If you're comparing the taste you made, to the one you found at the store. There are several things that can be in play. If you're using old coffee it can have a sour taste due to the oils within the beans going rancid. It could also be due to using cold water, which brings out a sour taste.

So in general I would go to a store that has high foot traffic, this lessens the chances of getting old coffee. You also might want to use "cafe Du Monde", the yellow can. Also check if your milk has expired. Good luck.

u/oxgon · 3 pointsr/videos

OK thats good to know, not sure if we have the condensed milk at the store or not.

Is this the same coffee? http://www.amazon.com/Trung-Nguyen-Vietnamese-coffee-can/dp/B000F17AKC/ref=pd_bxgy_gro_img_y

The powder v1.6 is significantly cheaper at 28 days x 2000kcal for $216.

Bottles or powder, over time you will find a consumption level and schedule that works for you. I personally drink 25+ ounces (v1.6) before and during my morning workout and then consume the rest in 4-6 small glasses throughout the day. I am never hungry for long because a good swig/mouthful of Soylent takes care of hunger pangs instantly.

Reading this and other liquid food forums has opened my eyes to the wide perceptual and conceptual differences in taste that exist between individual humans. That said, people who insist that either version of Soylent tastes like cardboard paste are either trolling (ie. full of shit) or they exist at the rare end of the "ability to objectively taste things spectrum". I've turned on (converted) almost 2 dozen people to Soylent usage and watched taste tests of twice that number and not one has ever come up with the cardboard analogy.

Cardboard or not (it's not) you can mix and match a thousand things into either version of Soylent to adjust the taste, texture or nutrient balance. I have been on 80-90% v1.x for 20 months. In addition to a daily multivitamin and 2000mg of Fish Oil, I add the following to my regular 2000kcal batch.

  • 10-15º grams of matcha - polyphenols and catechins (antioxidants) and caffeine
  • 50 grams of pea protein - muscle health and work out recovery
  • 15-20 grams of turmeric - proven anti-inflamatory, possible antioxidant properties.
  • 5 grams of [black pepper](http://www.amazon.com/Black-Pepper-Fine-Grind-2lb/dp/B000JMFCM0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
) - possible antioxidant properties, takes the edge off the sweetness of stock Soylent
  • 2 grams of salt - I work out/sweat a lot

My other variation is the "Soylent Hot-Shot™:

  • 30 grams of red curry powder
  • 15 grams of crushed red peppers
  • two sliced, medium-sized fresh habaneros.
  • allow to bubble and gurgitate overnight

Somewhere between the stock Soylent and these two extremes is a blend that will work for you.

Girl YES I had some of that in my coffee this morning with some 0carb creamer from Publix. I think the brand is Nut Pods. Not a fan of the name... but it's delicious and so much better tasting than almond milk in my coffee.

u/budgiebird12 · 3 pointsr/tea

I'm really a tea beginner, so if someone with more experience and knowledge comes along feel free to ignore me, but I just found an affordable earl grey on amazon.com for $15/lb. It's called Davidson's and I personally find it wonderful. The bergamot is much stronger than in other Earl greys I've had, which I really love!

Order some tea, and make it yourself.

Six of those small bags in ~2cups of almost boiling water until It's real dark. Put a little warm water in a gallon container and fully dissolve about 2 cups of sugar in it. Fill the container about halfway or more with ice and cold water. Stir your tea in. Fill the rest of the container with ice.

It's best over crushed ice so you can easily eat it as you go along.

That's the brand we use, and the recipe/method I use.
Pure cane sugar you won't need as much of. (1 1/2 cups).
Regular general use sugar isn't as sweet.

It is sweet, I warn you. You can always steep more tea, and add more water if it's too much.

Cheers

u/SuperTFAB · 3 pointsr/whole30

It gets way better! Generally My stomach is pretty messed up from medication but when I eat right with whole 30 I have no problems. For your coffee try Nut Pods As far as being hungry and feeling drained the first few days try to make sure you are eating enough and for our first dinner we always do steak, sweet potato and veggies. So filling and satisfying. Bring sweet potato to work to help with the energy slump and these RxBars help with that too. Nuts are also good to snack on. Eating healthy while doing a 12 hour shift was never easy but you just have to make time. You'll feel better after the first week. Hang in there!

u/alohaBonobo · 2 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I always assumed it was cheaper, and healthier, but I could be wrong.

Edit:

It's also personal preference. Easier to make, no filters needed.

30.5 oz of folgers costs 7.74 (USD) on amazon, and can make about 91 cups of coffee. that's about 8 cents a cup, plus 1 cent for the coffee filter.

Tetley's is 4 cents, and easier to make.

Also, I'd recommend picking up some of these (they have smaller ones than the 80 count, if you want to try them out)

They look a bit different, but they work just as well as the other k-cups. The coffee is damn good too, for those that like a strong coffee, that's not bitter. I've had Fog Chaser and French Roast, and my wife and I both like them very much.

u/tubbydammer · 2 pointsr/tea

For British style tea, buy a box of PG Tips or Tetley tea bags. Pour boiling water over a tea bag into a mug. Add milk, not creamer.

Of course, this is only better than what you do now if you prefer it.

u/0x6d1e · 2 pointsr/Coffee

Your basis is somewhat flawed -- what matters to end consumers is the cost-per-serving.

So lets standardize on an 8oz serving, which is the recommended output from a single K-cup.

Basis:

  • Amazon sells well-reviewed K-cups for $0.44 each; this is the cheapest K-cup supply I could find with positive reviews

  • Locally-roasted coffee of a generally acceptable quality costs ~$15 for a 12-oz bag (based on survey of local coffee providers in my area); which is $20/lb.

  • Water weighs about 29.574g per oz, making 8oz of water 236.592g

  • Assume that the operational costs are comparable for all methods (cost of equipment, cost to heat water, etc. etc.). This is probably not perfectly accurate but is reasonable for our exercise.

    K-cup vs. Pour-over:
    ====

Pour-over recipes generally look for a 14:1 to 17:1 water:coffee ratio by weight; to make this comparison most favorable to the K-cup, we'll use the 17:1 ratio.

With 236.592g of water, that means 13.91g of coffee, which is 32.6 servings per bag. To make the comparison as favorable as possible, we'll consider that you'll use that 0.6 servings somehow.

  • $20(lb) / 32.6(servings) = ~$0.613 per serving
  • $0.44(per serving) * 32.6(servings) = $14.344 per pound to match K-cup price

    K-cup vs. Autodrip:
    ====

Auto-drip recommends 60g of coffee per liter of water. A liter makes 4.22 eight-oz servings of coffee, meaning 14.21g of coffee per serving, which means 31.92 servings per pound of coffee.

  • $20(lb) / 31.92(servings) = ~$0.626 per serving
  • $0.44(per serving) * 31.92 = ~$14.045 per pound to match K-cup

    Conclusions:
    ====

  • If you're willing to buy inexpensive K-cups, it's cheaper than using premium coffee, but not by much; the quality difference exceeds the price difference.

  • If you can reduce your coffee bean costs to around $14/lb or less, you're saving money vs. K-cups; since you can get better coffee at $14/lb that what you'll get in a K-cup, it's fair to say that K-cups are more expensive than decent coffee

All in all, using premium coffee from a local roaster is a little more expensive than the cheapest reasonable K-cup option. However, you can get coffee of superior quality to the best K-cups for less money than you can buy the cheapest of the K-cups, which means that:

  1. If money is the main concern, buy reasonably good beans and auto-drip
  2. If convenience is the main concern, K-cup might be a reasonable choice
  3. You can have outstanding quality coffee for not much more than crummy K-cup coffee

tl;dr excellent coffee is more expensive than mediocre K-cup coffee, but not by much; decent coffee is cheaper than K-cups.

32 oz. glass with ice and water and a 12 oz. insulated Nissan Thermos with a nice strong Assam broken leaf tea. I usually go through two waters for each mug.

In the afternoons I sometimes swap the Assam for a Rooibos, a little Constant Comment or a nice Gunpowder Green tea.

The evenings are almost always either a fine singlemalt or cup of Constant Comment.

u/rubysc · 2 pointsr/xxketo

Not sure about you, but I don't use a ton of shelf stable stuff anymore. I have a big row of mason jars up high full of probably rancid gluten free flours and sugars from my pre-keto days :p They look cool, though!

Besides the three you mentioned: maybe nuts? Is there anything you go through fast enough that it won't need to be in the fridge or in a smaller, airtight, opaque container? For oils or vinegar that you go through fast enough, you could get pretty glass bottles with pour spouts. Actually, some olive oils come in really pretty bottles already.

What about coffee? I buy small, soft k-cups that use less plastic, so we actually keep regular and decaf coffee in wide mouth mason jars by the keurig. (this brand; they also are sold at Costco: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007TGDXNO). Beans or ground coffee would be prettier than the cups, if you use that. If you aren't going through coffee pretty quickly, I don't recommend this, because gets stale.

There are more options if you're willing to do bigger jars than masons. Tea bags? I tried those in a wide mouth mason jar and they just don't fit very well. But a big wide canister with straight sides would hold tea bags pretty nicely if you either have enough of the same kind or don't mind digging through a jumble to find the flavor you're looking for.

Non-food things? Utensils? Measuring spoons? These would probably look best in the tall narrow jam jars (8 or 12oz) or the wide mouth pint or 1.5 pint jars. The straight sides look really nice.

Some friends of mine bought all Market Pantry (target store brand) canned goods. The label/branding is pretty simple, so it actually looked really clean and elegant when displayed on a bookshelf. If you use a lot of canned goods, this might be an option too and doesn't even require jars.

I use 2 level teaspoons of japanese Tmatcha per 'meal' of soylent 1.x.

Initially I ordered this cheaper green tea powder from Taiwan but the packaging was crap, it sprayed powder all over the other stuff in the box. The Tmatcha stuff is in a much sturdier bag and they double-bag it with a zip-lock bag too.

Mountainhouse/Wise/Backpacker's Pantry are my go-tos. The lady loves Good to Go meals when we're in the woods. I'll admit, they're delicious, but they're also several dollars more per package. https://goodto-go.com/ - The Thai Curry is our favorite.

Beyond that...peanut butter, tortillas or wheat wraps, Lära and Clif bars, Stovetop Stuffing, oatmeal, dried salami, cheese, soup mixes. If you don't mind the weight, you'd be shocked at how good a SPAM and Stovetop burrito can be at the end of the day.

For coffee, I've fallen in love with Vinacafe for its low price, decent taste, and all-in-one creamer and sugar inclusion: https://www.amazon.com/Vinacafe-Instant-Coffee-2-Pack-sachets/dp/B00Q7DKXKQ . In addition to Ice Tea powder, there is actually Instant Tea that is made with the same process as Instant Coffee.

Here's some on amazon. It's not that great, so it has a lot in common with instant coffee.

I've always considered a Kettle "Necessary", myself. However I also drink a lot of tea and very seldom make coffee... To the point where I actually have a wacky Tea Maker machine which, while fun to watch was hardly cost effective. In neither case have I noticed how 115V really causes any problems. Considering how often people sleight on Americans for a supposed "I want it now" attitude they sure do seem to take issue with the extra time waiting for water to boil.

Interestingly, Just as there is Instant Tea to Instant Coffee, there are also Coffee Bags

Would this be different with different coffees, perhaps? Certainly here in the UK we have different blends of tea marketed as being for different water areas to some extent - see e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yorkshire-Tea-Hard-Water-Bags/dp/B007EDY142 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yorkshire-Tea-Traditional-1200-Bags/dp/B004QPHXL4 (for instance)

If I could find this shit, cheaply, I would be drinking it all day. I've experimented with making my own cold teas, and things turn out WONDERFULLY, until I can't get the instant gratification and have to wait 24 hours for a new kettle of deliciousness to cool down enough.

I'm accustomed to savory drinks though; Coke Zero is starting to get too sweet for me and the salt gives me headaches. I can do straight coconut water, and STRONG green tea tastes delicious to me, but too bitter to other people. (More for me, haha!)

EDIT Aug 11, 11:44pm PST

1.) something that is gray.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. It rains so much in my city and on those days I like to have my tea and soup and all the yummy hot homecooked food at school in the library while I study. I already have a great thermos for my tea and hot cocoa but not for my soups/food.

3.) Something food related that is unusual. I don't know if this is necessarily food related but WOOOO TEA. MANA-TEA. Seriously this is awesome.

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. A wii for my mom because she has been wanting a wii or ipad for a long time. My bro and i think the wii would be better because at least we could all play it together when we go home to visit.

5.) I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's the book I just finished reading and I feel like it has helped me a lot. I am so much more motivated and driven and it is helping me make some tough choices in my life. I am a senior in college but this book can help anyone who is at any place in their life I think. I currently have this on my wishlist which is like a supplement to the book. Seriously though, read it, share it with everyone you know. Let's make the world a happier place.

6.) An item that is less than a dollar. Awww yeee. They always seem to have one of these on the coffee table at my brother's house. Wherever he lives. Even though it's never his. But yeah, they're cool but I don't actually want one.

7.) Something related to cats. THIS IS SO AWESOME. I have another mug with the disappearing thing on my wishlist too. But yeah, I love cats, I just don't have much cat stuff on my wishlist. I do need a real cat though... hint hint nudge nudge

EDIT Aug 12, 12:15am PST

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. Okay it's not Amazon but it is beautiful and I have had my eye on it for a year. Despite that fact that I do not plan on having children for at least 8 years. Dem hormones are a'ragin.

9.) I know it's not REALLY a movie but... A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Because it is so beautiful and awe inspiring. It really brings me a sense of peace every time I watch it.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. I can put on my holy strainer hat and pray to The Flying Spaghetti Monster to save me from the zombies.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. I know I used this for another one but really, I think doing these exercises would help me in all areas of life.

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. These beauties, even though I doubt I can grow them without a yard...

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? My little acer hand me down freezes a lot, can't do multiple things at once, doesn't have a cd drive, has a screen too tiny to edit photos or edit my website. Basically everything is frustrating. And I'm a college student. So I use the computer for basically everything... and everything the little laptop CAN do takes forever.

EDIT Aug 12, 1:51am PST

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. If you don't think that is big enough, then here, but it's newly added.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. Well, I'm pretty sure this is smaller than a golf ball. If it wasn't, I'd be disappointed.

16.) Something that smells wonderful. Mmm imagine the ginger lemon grass!

17.) A (SFW) toy. And here's another one because I couldn't decide which one looks more fun...

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. Currently obsessed with learning all kinds of new jewelry techniques! Also obsessed with tea because it's the one thing my boyfriend and I developed an interest in together. It didn't start out as either of our interests.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. THIS IS SO PRETTY AND USEFUL AT THE SAME TIME. Seriously so cute, has lovely details, 8gb, and you can wear it as a pendant. Whaaaat!

EDIT: this lovely is made in oregon!

I really like these: https://www.amazon.com/nutpods-Unsweetened-Dairy-Free-Creamer-Variety/dp/B01F2PYV20

They are unsweetened, which I think is great :)

u/Hot--Beef--Injection · 2 pointsr/kratom

So ive found my way because I could never convince my friends to throw a heaping spoon of powder in their mouth and painfully wash it down with some liquid to achieve a feel-good state (They would think ive lost it) and I didnt want to kratom all by myself. The best tasting most classy way to take kratom is.......

Smoothie it my friend. Get yourself a nice little easy to clean blender, and obtain some frozen fruit to keep on storage. Throw a handful of maybe blue berries and pineapples in, add some milk and a bit of ice cream (Honey to be healthier and more convenient, shit dont go bad or melt) add your kratom dose and blend that bitch!!! For some added antioxidants or energy boost (As well as yummy flavor) Add yourself a teaspoon or two of matcha green tea!! IT works so well with the kratom (that you can hardly taste) Throw any extracts you wish in there as well. Blue lotus? Fuck it. Kava? Fuck it. THC? Fuck it. Throw em! Got some veggies like kale? Fuck it, throw em in!!!

For the matcha
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001T5GHUM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The more kratom you use the bigger you should make the smoothie. Cons about this is the kratom does add a bit o a weird texture, as if there are fruit peels. But its so easy to ignore. If my snob ass friends could enjoy it you for sure can too. And also cleaning up sucks of course. Your blender will make the cleaning easier or harder or you. Luckilly, I got one of those bullet blender that dont have a lot of nooks and crannies. In the end, its worth it. Im making kratom margaritas next, cause fuck it.

Also if you never had taro look it into, shit makes good ass smoothies. Reminds me of hazelnut at times just not as robust

Kratom and coffee could pair, but im not sure.

If you enjoy Nestle instant, then you will definitely enjoy Starbucks instant coffee. They come out to about 50 cents a cup and for someone who is new to coffee, these are a good start. I usually keep a couple in my backpack when we run out of coffee at work. Hope this helps!

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Coffee

I would recommend this Korean instant coffee:

http://www.amazon.com/Maxim-Original-Korean-Coffee-100pks/dp/B005GV9RZC

Like everyone else is suggesting, it doesn't compare to drip coffee; however, cream and sugar are included in the individual packets and you can control how much goes into each cup by pinching the cream/sugar end of the coffee packet as you pour it into your cup.

u/Hrimnir · 2 pointsr/personalfinance

I have an even better solution.

Buy This and This

Then make lattes yourself that taste better and run you ~.25 to .30 cents a cup. Pocket the difference and profit.

Hello, fellow Yorkshire Tea drinker!

I've found that most expat shops do stock Yorkshire tea, but all of them at truly exorbitant prices (usually more expensive than ordering from the UK or getting friends to send it over).

If you're determined, I recommend this bag from Amazon: 3kg / 1200 teabags for £25. Total including delivery came to £25.50, which means it's cheaper per bag than in Tesco.

The teabags are the same as normal, but be aware than 1200 is more than you think: plan on somewhere to store them, preferably airtight, for the year it'll take you to drink them all!

Good luck!

What makes me happy is sitting down with a cup of tea and a good book, even better if there's music playing. Actually, the more I think about it, its not so much the reading that makes me happy, but that environment.

I've been getting into this ancient game Go. The idea of sitting down with some tea and music to play a game of Go sounds just as relaxing.

I just moved to a new town. I don't know anyone and have been spending everyday looking for work. When I had free time I decided to go to this café right downtown. I brought my Go board (Goban) with me. Go is a game that needs too players, so right after buying a nice cup of tea, I set up the board and opened the app on my tablet. Interestingly, we have yet to build a program that can beat the pros at Go. Fortunately for me, this isn't a problem( :/ ). So I start the Go app and start setting out the pieces(stones) out on the real board with every move I make and rhe computer makes.

Unfortunately I lost, but it accomplished my goal. Someone else spotted me playing and asked to play. We played our game till they had to go. We called it a draw, and thank god because I was losing so bad. But while we were playing he said, "not to make any assumption on your gender or sexual identity, but guerilla gay bar is tomorrow night and you should come." To clarify, GGB is a monthly event where a local bar hosts a night for the GLBT+ community to hang out.

I went and met a lot more people, so now I don't feel so alone.

For you because everyone needs one for this.

I hope you start to feel better, and I picked a sampler of teas for you because sometime folks don't know what tea they like. Cheers

Edit: I spell gud

u/MsZombiePuncher · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Oh I got this!

  • Harney and Sons has tons of Loose Leaf Tea on Amazon. Personally I suggest the Paris and the Hot Cinnamon Spice. Alternatively they have a sampler. Harney and Sons makes really excellent tea.
  • Tea Forte also has a sampler, but honestly it's not as cost effect, but it'd be great for trying different types.
  • You can also buy some Twinings Loose Leaf tea on Amazon. My personal favorites are Lady Earl Grey, and the Darjeeling.

(Note, all of these will last you a good bit, especially if you get more than one)

Also, I know this is a Amazon heavy site, but I also want to suggest Adagio. They have A LOT of tea for really good prices, and you can actually get samplers of any tea for really cheap. I love just get a boatload of samplers. Each sampler contains around 10 cups of tea so that's also a great deal in itself. They have an entire page of sampler collections. I specifically want to suggest the Chai Tea Sampler, the Herbal tea Orchard Sampler, the Oolong Tea Orchard Sampler and the Green Tea Sampler. You also can't go wrong with just going around the site and picking and choosing, although you do save a few bucks with a sampler pack. They also like to just throw samples at you while you're checking out.

If you find you want to get something on Adagio, I have a 5 dollar off coupon I can give you.

I wouldn't consider myself a coffee connoisseur but rather I base my taste on what others think. This stuff is delicious (or that's what they think), the robusta sweetens the espresso while increasing its potency. Robusta is considered a lower grade strain but the Italians love lavazza and they invented espresso so they must know something that I don't.

If you want to buy a phin, buy this one. I post that link whenever this video gets posted because I've been so happy with that particular model; I have two and I've used them once or twice a day for over a year now with no complaints. It's my go-to daily cup and it's fantastic.

  • Dishwasher safe but also simple to hand-wash
  • Plastic knobs on the sides don't come off (unlike many models)
  • Holds 11 oz of water (more like 8oz. when also filled with 14-22g of coffee)
  • Stainless steel doesn't show pitting at the weld joints
  • Works just like a pour-over but with no paper waste (although rinsing it out every day wastes some water).

The smaller/cheaper models I've tried all had failings in one way or another, but if you're looking for a good phin, I recommend the one linked above.

To find your ideal brew in the phin, start with 15g of the same coarseness you'd use for a Chemex (#5 / "beaker" setting on my Bodum grinder) and fill to the top with just-off-the-boil water. Top off your cup with more hot water when finished to dilute to taste. My morning cup uses 18-20g, but most of my friends prefer it around 14-16g. If you're pouring over sweetened condensed milk (ca phe sua da) use a finer grind to get a slower brew and a sharper slightly over-extracted flavor to counter the potent sweetness. Also consider a can of Trung Nguyen coffee grinds: they have some coffee and butter flavors added but deliver the exact taste of pho-house coffee.

Caffeine: It's hard at first (headaches, etc) but you can kick the habit. Short of that, you can buy 100- or 250-piece boxes of black tea for really cheap. Here's 312 for $11! Black tea has more caffeine than green or most other types. It's a little bitter at first if you aren't used to it, but it gets easier to drink... also, don't let it steep for too long, 5 minutes is perfect. Longer than that and it can get really really bitter. Powdered teas IMO taste gross but it's up to you if that's an option.

Eggs are cheap and filling. They are also pretty easy to cook. Scrambled eggs, especially, are very easy and quick.

There's lots of other vegetables out there too. You like broccoli? That's a great start! Walmart and Publix have their place, however if there is a local produce store, they may have better prices on good, seasonal produce. Farmers markets and Asian food stores are also great places to look for good food on the cheap. Anything leafy (spinach/kale/chard/and 'greens' of all sorts) are easy to prepare.

Sometimes I try to stuff myself with vegetables at first, eating a bit more than I feel like... then force myself to wait 10-15 minutes, then move on to meats. It gives the body some time to realize how full it is, and helps to not overeat as much.

Water: don't go on a crazy chug contest, but if you feel like drinking more, then do it. Especially since you are consuming a larger-than-average amount of calories and probably sodium as well. As you lose weight, you may eventually find you don't need quite as much.

I hope this helps a little... best of luck to you!

I don't drink alcohol, so for the tea teetotalers, I offer Fruity Iced Tea...
Sun Brew Iced Tea (this is key. please don't boil water)
-------------------------------------------------

  • One gallon of water in a glass pitcher
  • 6 PG Tips tea bags
  • Let sit in full sun for 6-8 hours
  • Take pitcher inside and discard tea bags. Tea will become bitter if you leave bags it in for too long.
  • Fresh fruit. I love strawberries, raspberries, watermelon. I limit citrus but a nice [blood orange] (https://g.co/kgs/VyVQVL) is fantastic.
  • Mash the fruit up in a medium bowl. If you have a blender or food processor, pulse it to a coarse consistency.
  • Pour in the sun tea and let it steep for 12-24 hours.
  • strain the fruit and enjoy the tea.

Iced tea is my go-to and being summer in Boston area, farmers markets have fantastic fresh fruit.

Not that I recall. You dont need much.

By my math (see below), Ito En's Oi Ocha bottled green tea uses abt 1/2 teaspoon pure ascorbic acid per gallon.

You can get pure ascorbic acid crystals/powder at natural food stores, or: 1lb https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0013OUMVO/

8oz https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00028LX1U/

Ito En's Oi Ocha (ingredients: water, tea, ascorbic acid (vitamin c)) has 220% rda vit C per 8 oz, rda is 60mg, so 132 mg per 8oz, or about 1g per half gallon, which comes to about 1/2 teaspoon (which is 2.25g according to Now ascorbic acid label) of pure ascorbic acid per gallon (whew.)

u/legendary_ironwood · 1 pointr/tea

I think you missed my point.

> empty bag of tea = $$

> empty bag of tea + tea = $$$

You'd think that empty bags would be dirt cheap, or at least cheaper than an already full bag. Thus, if a full bag of tea can cost you about 8 cents.

For example,

this set of 110 empty bags sells for 5 cents a bag.

this tea is $29.99 for 480 bags of tea, or 6.24 cents/bag.

and this tea is $10.01 for 310 bags or 3.22 cents per bag.

in conclusion - why are empty bags so comparatively expensive?

If it tastes weak, try adding more grounds or packing / screwing the filter down tighter. My phin can't be screwed in, so I just pack the grounds down pretty tight. Not long. Technically the oils go rancid quickly. Like within a year. Though people on here will say you can have a can of coffee for years. If you’re any kind of coffee snob you won’t like it.

Full beans will always last longer than ground. I’ve heard unroasted coffee would have the longest shelf life, but then you have to roast it.

I just keep emergency coffee that I consider disposable after a year or so. I might use it to make a batch of cold brew or something. But I buy a jar of instant and then I buy a 4 pack of this on amazon when it’s on sale and swap them out yearly.

When I am thirsty I love to drink Bloody Marys. I will never drink a cup of melted nacho cheese that has been sitting out for a week when I am thirsty.

Lavazzo italian espresso that wakes you right up in the morning. Thank you!

I love Nutpods - kept seeing a bunch of paleo influencers post about it and gave it a try. Nutpods

Yeah your calculations are correct, the only problem is I use 2 teaspoons per cup of tea instead of 1 teaspoon because it produces a stronger tea that stands up to milk. So it'll cost me significantly more. On top of that, if I need 1.5 times that for cold brew, It'll cost even more.

I'm using Arbor Teas Organic Earl Grey which is at about 30 dollars for 1 pound, but I can also try Davidson's Organic Earl Grey off Amazon for about 15 dollars a pound. https://www.amazon.com/Davidsons-Tea-Bulk-Earl-16-Ounce/dp/B000SATIBO?th=1

But yeah, I think if I advertise just the tea as organic, I would be able to sell more, or charge a higher price.

Is this the Earl Grey Creme you are talking about? https://www.teasource.com/products/earl-grey-creme-black-tea?variant=7636916338724

I can buy a sample and see if it goes well with milk :)

San Francisco Bay French Roast was one of the best K-Cups I've tried.

Matcha powder is good for an energy boost for sure! Tastes pretty yummy too if you like green tea.

Also check out Chia seeds for a protein and texture boost. These are actually the exact ones I use.

I'll try a different bean. For some reason the store I was at only carried one that wasn't ground. Maybe I should shop around more for the bean. That's what I don't know about. The bean would make THAT much difference? Also what are some of the best whole bean coffee brands?

As for the Vietnamese coffee. I don't know what else to say. I used a chicory coffee. Is that pretty common? I mixed it with condensed milk to make it sweet. It wasn't quite as good as I remembered when I had desert coffee at the Vietnamese restaurant I used to go to. This is the coffee I got

I love it! I didn't know Costco sold it and I usually buy it at Mitsuwa Marketplace. You can get it on Amazon, too. =D

It's similar to coffee in that it's brewed using hot water to extract flavor from plant material.

It tastes mostly quite different, however. Personally, I enjoy good coffee, but good coffee is much more expensive and time-consuming to make than good tea.

You can get tea quite cheaply, although high-end varieties command exorbitant prices. Here for example is what appears to be a decent Earl Grey (I haven't had it myself) for less than $1/ounce (keep in mind that an ounce is enough to make 14 cups of tea, assuming you use 2g per cup).

Tea is as easy to make as you want it to be. All varieties come from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Black tea is usually steeped once, as are flavored teas and herbal tisanes, so all you need to do is put the leaves in your pot or infuser, boil some water and pour it in.

Oolong and green teas can be more involved, since the high-quality ones can be steeped many times. Still, it's not all that much effort.

Mate and guayusa are rather different. They come from two different types of holly bushes - Ilex paraguariensis and Ilex guayusa respectively. They're even cheaper than tea, but you use a tablespoon or more per cup. They also have much higher levels of caffeine, generally speaking. Mate is traditionally prepared using a gourd, and drunk through a metal straw called a bombilla that has a strainer in it.

You can get 80 count K-Cups from San Francisco Bay Coffee It is 35 cents per k-cup, which isn't too bad. I did the math and found I'd be spending about $20 more a year than what I spent when using the typical ground coffee picked up at the grocery store.

If you like that 3-in-1, try Maxim. It is MUCH better and the best I have ever tried in that style: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GV9RZC/ref=crt_ewc_title_huc_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AC40OSU6U7Q4G

Like all the Asian instants, they are a little weak. My wife and I use two of these + 2 vias for a 500ml shared cup of wake up.

u/qovneob · 1 pointr/tea

In an effort to switch myself off coffee (and caffine) I recently picked up a stainless steel tea strainer and a bag of Davidson's Rooibos and I'm quite happy with the results. I used to drink a lot of bagged tea too, which is by no means bad, but I definitely prefer the process of brewing some loose leaf.

> I decided to see if prices are still similar, as the article is 3 years old. I found Black Silk on Amazon. Assuming they are still 8 grams per cup, the 24-pack, at $0.88 per cup, works out to $49.89/lb of coffee. If you buy the 72-pack, it's $0.62 per cup, which is $35.15/lb of coffee.
>

I get these, that work out to about $0.36 per cup.

>there's no vendor lock-in

There use to be and people bitch over it and they removed it.

>They could literally go to Jamba Juice and pay less per glass.

You can say the same thing about coffee makers like the Keurig. I could understand the traditional water and pot kind, as that's using ground up beans that come cheap per ounce. You can get 30 oz of ground up beans for $7. Making say an 8 oz cup of coffee cheap.
