I'm not. My grandparents had a similar "hidden" room for us grandkids. When they added on to their house, there ended up being some extra space in the eves on the 2nd floor. They left a little door in the closet of the spare bedroom (where us kids slept when we stayed over), and you can crawl through into a room that was maybe 6x8 and just about high enough for an adult to kneel in. They carpeted it, put in a light and a tiny round window, and filled it with books and toys and a beanbag chair. One of the books they got was this, right after it was first printed. I read the whole thing in that little hidden room in one afternoon as a 10-year-old, and I was never happier.

tl;dr - Secret rooms rock.

Allow me to point out that Jim Davis not only loved the idea, but allowed a collection of strips to be published, and even contributed a few of his own.

u/UselessPenguin · 26 pointsr/AskReddit

You would enjoy this book.

My dad used to tell me that when the ice cream van was playing music, it meant they were out of ice cream. He also told me that raisins were spiders with their legs cut off and I'm still a bit wary of them to this day.

u/impy695 · 19 pointsr/gamehelp16

He actually already published the book: http://www.amazon.com/xkcd-0-Randall-Munroe/dp/0615314465.

That's the introduction to the book if I'm remembering correctly. I'd be curious to see if there are any minor differences between what was published and what is in the file. I plan on checking when I get home. If there is a hidden easter egg typo's/changed words could be a clue.

u/CalcasieuRed · 18 pointsr/funny

Oh yea, sorry. Here you go

u/315retro · 17 pointsr/creepy

Oh I know what this is from!

https://www.amazon.com/Sticky-Monsters-John-Kenn-Mortensen/dp/0224095765

There's also a vinyl art toy based on one available from unbox industries but it's a bit out of my price range unfortunately.

u/1337meat · 16 pointsr/AskReddit

I think G-G is fantastic, and I have to give Jim Davis some respect in regard to that, he could have had the site taken down for © infringement, but instead he went ahead and put out a book based on the concept and even had Dan Walsh write the forward. That's pretty progressive in comparison to most of his peers.

u/sphks · 12 pointsr/French

A gun.

More seriously, popcorn bags to microwave are easy to find. So are Kitkats (isn't it from Nestlé, a Swiss company?). Lays are very easy to find too. Here is a perfect list :
http://www.myamericanmarket.com/fr/accueil/meilleures-ventes

Beef jerky, definitely. And Reese's. And Fluff.

Oh.. and a big album of Calvin & Hobbes (written in English of course). Especially if there are children learning English (14-18 yo). But also without children, you can't be wrong with Calvin & Hobbes. I like this one.

If they're into board games, maybe a small game with cards written in English. Like Black Stories or Cards Against Humanity.

That's all I want. Can you bring me all these stuff? (not the gun).

The Authoritative, The Essenial and the Indispensable

Can be bought together, used, for well under $20, and that should cover most (or a very good portion of) the comics.

u/ChickenInASuit · 8 pointsr/comicbooks

X-Statix only ever had the one run, by Peter Milligan. Get the omnibus if you can, it contains all the relevant issues, or if you have Marvel Unlimited, start reading at X-Force #116 - that's where the team debuts, and they operate as X-Force for 12 issues until they're forced to change their name and that's when you switch to reading X-Statix.

If you want to read in trades, start here.

And in case you're wondering, that referral code is mine for breadpig. Used it here, for instance.

UPDATE
Wow! You've skyrocketed the book up 442 spots to the #212th bestselling book on Amazon. Thanks for spreading the word, everyone.

Okay, I'm going to link you to a few (or several) strips then:

http://i.imgur.com/wxOlU1c.gif

http://i.imgur.com/X1HC6jP.gif
http://i.imgur.com/iwF3j9j.gif
http://i.imgur.com/MQyw8GE.gif
And of course the cover to the Essential Calvin and Hobbes

There's a really great strip where Calvin takes a polaroid of Hobbes jumping at him to show his mom as proof that he's regularly attacked by a tiger, but to her it just appears that Calvin threw his stuffed tiger in front of the camera. It's a classic hilarious kid moment, I wish I could've found a link to it.

Oh and Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat is the name of one of the collections of strips.

u/LambastingFrog · 7 pointsr/AskReddit

Have you found the book Great Lies to tell Small Kids yet? It's from the same chap who did the Bunny Suicides books.

My favourite is the one that says:
>That's not the same sun that rises each morning. Every night, when the sun sets, it goes down behind that hill over there and lands. Then we wait until it's cool enough and cut it up, and that's where margarine comes from.

That or the one simply says:
>Milk feels pain.

u/silentkit · 7 pointsr/comicbooks

Mulligan/Allred X-Force into the new title X-Statix is game-changing and I don't know why it isn't talked about more. I'd read it in singles but I lucked into the omnibus on a great (sub-$40) sale and it just blows me away whenever I crack it open.

u/Mosstopy · 7 pointsr/CrossStitch

My first time finishing, and it’s these cute Pusheens! Finishing sucks, and my fabric was too thick to fit in the frame, so I had to cut the back, fit the fabric in, and then tape the back on. The backs to these are atrocious, but I’m pretty happy with the fronts. Let me know any tips or tricks to make it easier in the future!

I got the patterns from the pusheen cross stitch kit. You can find it on amazon

Actually there was a graphic novel that covered if Dr. Doom ruling the world would make it a better place:

http://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Graphic-Emperor-Starring-Avengers/dp/0871352567

Emperor Doom.

Dr. Doom killed The Purple Man to get his mind control abilities on a global level, he had to deal with Androids who could not be mind controlled like The Vision and had devices made for them to comply. Simon Williams aka Wonder Man was put into a deep sleep before it happened and when he woke up he found that Dr. Doom was Emperor Doom and ran the world and poverty, discrimination, war, homelessness, hunger, etc were gone. For some reason The Purple Man tech didn't work on Wonder Man because he was made of Ionic Energy.

But it is a very good read for the Dr. Doom fan.

u/trojan91 · 6 pointsr/childfree

She also bought me this book. I love that woman! <3

u/kecker · 6 pointsr/JUSTNOFAMILY

When my niece was born, the first of the grandchildren, I made it a point that once a month I sent my sister and BIL an "inappropriate" kids book. This was on the list, although my favorite is "K is for Knifeball", as even I thought this one went a little too far.

Mike Allred's run of X-Force. Starts with this:

https://www.amazon.com/X-Force-New-Beginnings-Marvel-Comics/dp/078510819X

It's a really phenomenal book, and not necessarily for the reasons one would think after this excerpt.

u/Dogmatician · 5 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I went looking for yours and I can't find it anywhere but I found this.

u/SuperTonicV7 · 5 pointsr/funny

This book is also excellent in that capacity.

My wife got me both T Rex Trying along with Zombies Hate Stuff. Great reads. We leave them on the crapper.

u/verylate · 5 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Well, if you like invader zim, you should really try Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Squee!. Two comics from the 90s, drawn and written by the same guy. Disturbingly funny.

u/the____can · 4 pointsr/Marvel

Adored by humans, reviled by their fellow mutants, X-Force does the dirty jobs that others can't, or won't. All they want in return is fame, money, sex, power and lucrative endorsement deals.

Its smartly written social satire. I don't want to spoil it but def pick up X-FORCE by Peter Milligan which then becomes X-STATIX.

https://www.amazon.com/X-Force-New-Beginnings-Marvel-Comics/dp/078510819X

u/1LT_0bvious · 4 pointsr/youseeingthisshit

I first read it in a Squee book.

Edit: This one, specifically

u/Joelsomethingorother · 4 pointsr/funny

Hmm, confused. I'm sure I have this at home, but I thought I only had Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors. Going to have to check after work now.

u/OfficialEspurr · 4 pointsr/CrossStitch

Oh my god I did it. I'm so proud of myself! Some friends of mine picked up cross stitch, and I was all 'yeah this sounds like something I hate myself just enough to do', so I bought the Pusheen cross stitch kit off Amazon and got to stitching. The bottom's a little off but I didn't notice it until I was completely finished, so... hopefully the recipient just doesn't look too hard. I absolutely love cross stitch as a craft and I'm so excited to start my next project!

u/GumdropGoober · 4 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Amazon has used ones for about $5 apiece for the big collection books, seems like a great deal. As seen here.

Otherwise just have her punch book store into google and try a local one, Seattle has a bunch, and they are good at tracking down older books.

u/thoomfish · 3 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

> (Wild animals cannot commit homicide)

You mean Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat is a lie?

Childhood ruined.

u/PitifulAntagonist · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

Emperor Doom is a classic Doom vs the Avengers story. It’s about Doom actually concurring world and what happens because of that. It even has a place in continuity so at some point in Marvel’s history Doom actually did rule the world. It is crazy Silver Age fun.

u/ImakeItBetter · 3 pointsr/pics

It hasn't been omitted.

It's in his book Different Dances

It's definitely worth checking out.

u/poesian · 3 pointsr/funny

I have a copy of Different Dances which is fantastic, and is made primarily of his cartoons he did for Playboy. They're about what you'd imagine: weird/sexual comics done in the same style as his children's work.

His Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book is also pretty weird, and is maybe for "older" kids.

u/party_squad · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

Hey there. This was a hayday for the X-Men. Recommendations from that era.

New X-Men by Morrison and Quitely is probably the other huge, groundbreaking one to read (Joss really is riffing off of much of Morrison's ideas, and says so in interviews).

X-Statix by Milligan and Alred. This began as a re-envisioning of X-Force. This is a different flavour but was again a great series.

X-Force by Kyle and Crain. The next X-Force was really incredible and spawned a number of spinoffs. Dark and badass.

u/Gecko99 · 3 pointsr/WTF

Yes, and you can pick it up here.

u/CalvinAndHobbes_HQ · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

This panel was from Emperor Doom which I'm seeing Bob Hall, Bill Oakley, and Ken Lopez having illustrator credits. Sadly, I don't know which one did this page or if it was a collaborative effort.

u/Alicrafty · 3 pointsr/CrossStitch

I work at a big chain bookstore and we carry them! They’re tiny little boxes and at my store they’re kept on an acrylic spinner with other small boxes, mostly collectible things. Also I did a quick search and found this on amazon and I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing :)

u/ChocolateRage · 3 pointsr/whowouldwin

> I remember my cousins telling me about Dr Doom. He always seemed really cool, what do you know about him?

hahah EVERYTHING. Here is my recommendations for Doom

Starting point:

  • Books of Doom is a modern re-telling of the origins of Dr. Doom. You will get his tragic childhood, his path to greatness, and his eventual rise to ruler of Latveria.

  • Fantastic Four #246-247 "This Land is Mine": Now that you have seen the origin and backstory for Dr. Doom see all that he has done for his country and what it would be like without his gentle guiding hand

    Must Reads:

  • Doomwar: Dr. Doom wages a war against Black Panther. Behold the planning, genius, and power of Dr. Doom as he out plans one of Marvels most genius heroes. This story also gives an in depth view of why Dr. Doom believes he is doing the right thing and why all heroes that oppose him are the true villains.

  • Emperor Doom: Have you ever wondered what would happen if the bad guys won? This story will show you just how evil and terrible it is when Doom takes over the world....oh wait..you mean it's not bad at all? Wow it turns out Dr. Doom is a man of his word, (as always) and might just be doing more good for the world than expected.

  • Secret Wars: Besides just being an awesome book you can also witness Dr. Doom's genius as he plays people like pawns and confronts a god in his home turf.

    Suggested Readings:

  • Fantastic Four 67-70 and Fantastic Four 500: the "Unthinkable" arc: This story will show the full power of Dr. Doom's magical abilities and to what lengths he will go to punish the Fantastic Four. This is a great battle between Reed and Dr. Doom.

  • Fantastic Four 562-569: "Marquis of Death": This story has to be the longest revenge ever sought in fictional history. Dr. Doom's master returns to see how his star pupil is doing and he isn't pleased. This story will strike fear in the enemies of Doom when you see both the extent of his power and the extreme resolve and willpower of Dr. Doom

Note that Davis is generally pretty cool. He's on the record for enjoying the Garfield Minus Garfield remixes, and there's even a book. Reaching out to him and Dan Walsh would probably be a good idea.

u/doomddo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I just started the keto diet yesterday!

ok so this is just a shot in the dark but when ever I see people talk about Graphic Novels THIS always comes to mind! I love Jhonen Vasquez's work (come on Invader ZIM?) well Johnny The Homicidal Maniac is much darker than zim but super good! and there are 2 spinoffs that I know about [I feel sick] (http://www.amazon.com/Feel-Sick-Book-About-Girl/dp/B001VD1FZY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1396454824&sr=8-2&keywords=I+feel+sick) there is only 2 comics for that one and there is Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors and that in a way is a sequel to JTHM.

u/Jacques_Cormery · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

If anyone is wondering, I just did some homework and found out the comic I had never seen was from The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes and you can click through "Look Inside" here to read the whole thing if you haven't before. Because my family already had Yukon Ho! and Weirdos from Another Planet we never got this one.

But that's just expanding on my experience. I'd still love to hear if this has happened to anyone else who fancied themselves pretty well-versed already.

u/15blinks · 2 pointsr/WTF

If anybody wants one priced in dollars instead of kr(umpets), you can find one on amazon.

u/Georgy_K_Zhukov · 2 pointsr/history

First off, I would recommend putting down A People's History and not reading another word of it. Zinn has a very... iffy... reputation as an historian, and while he is at least wearing his biases on his sleeve, it really is a terrible place to start. It is the kind of book that can give a very interesting perspective on events, but makes for a very unhealthy starting point. /r/AskHistorians has no shortage of threads asking about him, and you'll see the answer is always the same.

Now my suggestion may seem like a silly one, but I'm dead serious. Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe series is really a great, great series of history books which I can't recommend highly enough. To more specifically address your needs, he did a book specifically on American History. He has his biases too - any historian will - but it isn't the politicized schlock that Zinn pitches. And if reading history in comic book form can't make it interesting, I'm not sure what will.

u/SpaceLemur34 · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Yep. With "Indispensable" and
"Exploring" you should have everything as far as I know. And no reason I can see to get paperback when you've got the hardcover.

u/Blacksheep01 · 2 pointsr/history

I know you said modern and American history but I have a fun, quick way for you to pick up some world history which believe it or not, you need a good deal of to understand US history. The US was not created in a void and before the revolution it was European colony of England, Holland, France and Spain at variant times. Not to mention the founders were all shaped by ideas from the Roman Republic and its collapse etc.

That said, I am a huge fan of accurate graphic novels to introduce people to history, I own the following one so will vouch for its accuracy and fun.

A Cartoon History of the Universe II - This book is cheap and outstanding, I started you at II as the first one goes back to the big bang and stops in the 4th century B.C.E. Likely further back then you'd want.

In looking this up for you, I also found Gonick wrote one about the modern world, no idea how good it is, but if his accuracy and fun holds up from his other works, it will be good. Cartoon History of the Modern World

I offer these as starting points. You get a full overview with awesome illustrations that might spark your interest the way some boring high school history teacher who was going through the motions didn't. If you like this, I hope you will keep asking questions and we can point you toward more books of interest.

u/zortnarftroz · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

This I believe is the earliest and where I started.

I then went to this one but I don't know if you can really go wrong starting anywhere...

u/CrazyBohemian · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Some of these aren't on Amazon, but all of them outside of amazon are on my wishlist, is that okay?

1.) Something that is grey.

[This compilation of xkcd comics!] (http://www.amazon.com/xkcd-0-Randall-Munroe/dp/0615314465/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1KXQQYMQ3MHEJ&coliid=I12D1D7CV12AVC) Though there aren't any formerly-unseen comics included, this is perfect for the lover of the famous (and always relevant) Xkcd webcomics.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain.

[This t-shirt for fans of Incubus that is apparently out of stock now, but I'm keeping it on my wishlist to gaze wistfully at.] (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/315rOsJeWzL._SL135_.jpg)
Incubus has always been one of my favorite bands, and all art that the lead singer (Brandon Boyd) produces is amazing, so I had high faith in this shirt being wonderful if I had the money to buy it.

3.) Something food related that is unusual.

[So I typed in "candy" and this popped up..] (http://www.amazon.com/LOCOMO-Rainbow-Hedgehog-Plastic-Baseball/dp/B00BRWH99K/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_2_49?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1376327288&sr=1-49&keywords=candy)
I'm not sure what I was expecting.

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why.

[My mom has always wanted to learn calligraphy and someone recommended this book to me] (http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Calligraphy-Complete-Lettering-Design/dp/0767907329/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1KXQQYMQ3MHEJ&coliid=I35YCU37X7E6Y2)
She paints signs for people, usually featuring newborn babies or pets, and she always has to print out a guide and trace it if her customers request a font for their name.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it!

[This compilation of postsecrets-- artistic postcards with secrets written on them-- that are all touching in their own way.] (http://www.amazon.com/PostSecret-Extraordinary-Confessions-Ordinary-Lives/dp/0060899190/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1KXQQYMQ3MHEJ&coliid=I22JZDFLS686V8)
If you haven't heard of Postsecret yet, you should check it out [here] (http://www.postsecret.com/)

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related!

I dunno!

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...)

I have two cats, but I got nothing for this one.

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it.

[This key from KeypersCove] (http://www.amazon.com/Handmade-Winter-Rose-Key-Necklace/dp/B00D3S4GVU/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376329005&sr=8-1&keywords=keypers+cove)
I had a similar one on my wishlist but it's out of stock now.

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why?

[Cloud Atlas!] (http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Atlas/dp/B00CRWJ5GO/ref=sr_sp-btf_title_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1376329072&sr=8-4&keywords=clouds+atlas)
Terribly confusing unless you see the [trailer] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWnAqFyaQ5s) first, it's surprisingly appropriate for this sub.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain.

[This climbing pick] (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Pacific-Mountain-Axe-80cm/dp/B002J91R1G/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376330277&sr=8-2&keywords=climbing+pick)
Ever played Telltale's The Walking Dead? Well, one character had a climbing pick that they used pretty frequently to scale buildings and kill zombies..it opened my eyes to the possibilities and dual uses of items.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals.

[This book] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Emotion-Thesaurus-Character-Expression/dp/1475004958/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) for my writing skills, I always have trouble finding just the right way to convey the proper emotion, plus I have severe social anxiety so it would help me figure out how to act in real life as well.

[Or this book by the famous Virginia Woolf] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Waves-Harvest-Book-ebook/dp/B004R1Q41C/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1KXQQYMQ3MHEJ&coliid=IHP0D0N718720) just the type of writing style I'm aiming for.

[Or this book that I'm sure would help me with my technique.] (http://www.amazon.com/Writing-Tools-Essential-Strategies-Writer/dp/0316014990/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top)

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items.

Hm?

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why?

I used to have this on my list, but a [Geiger counter] (http://www.amazon.com/Radex-RD1503-RADEX-Radiation-Detector/dp/B00051E906/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376331004&sr=8-1&keywords=geiger+counter) because I'm paranoid about radiation and etc. Deleted it off my list because it's not useful for everyday life.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave.

I got nothing on my list.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball.

[These socks] (http://www.amazon.com/Portal-Chells-Aperture-Science-Socks/dp/B008JGPSJU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1KXQQYMQ3MHEJ&coliid=I2KUOG9B813AXT) because they're ultra thin and I'm sure they could be crumpled up that small.

16.) Something that smells wonderful.

I'd put something here, but there's nothing I'm sure of. [This book] (http://www.amazon.com/White-Fluffy-Clouds-Inspiration-Forward/dp/0974512001/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1KXQQYMQ3MHEJ&coliid=I16LKBYPI8BE5U) because it could smell like Brandon Boyd?

17.) A (SFW) toy.

I've got nothing!

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school.

[This shirt] (http://www.designbyhumans.com/shop/rising-t-shirt/13087/) because I find it amazing, oh my god oh my god.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be.

[I've been trying to learn Irish for quite awhile now..] (http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Irish-Michael-OSiadhail/dp/0300121776/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376331377&sr=8-1&keywords=learn+irish)

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand.

[This poster, this poster!] (http://smbc.myshopify.com/products/dear-human-19x27-poster) To see what it's based on, the original comic is [here] (http://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=2223)

PBF is still my favourite online comic

and coincidentally, Amphigorey was one of my favourite books as a kid

u/Thermochopps · 2 pointsr/creepy

It's by Edward Gorey. I recommend checking out Amphigorey if you get a chance.

It is a mockingbird pin. It reminds me of a when I used to have time for leisure, when instead of only excercing our bodies for survival, we would excercise our minds and read. It reminds me of a book in which faith in the ability of human beings to band together against evil was prominent. And it reminds me of the days when people used to give freely, and makes me wonder if there are still generous strangers in these hard times when so much is on the line.

P.S. if it could fit in my pocket I would have said this book about zombies because in the toughest times, it helps to make light of your greatest fears, in order to maintain morale and stay sane.

Just FYI, I believe Half is owned by Amazon, so browsing through Amazon's used books will get you the same sellers. Here are 'very good' condition copies of a good C&H book.

Okay, so these might not be 100% cyberpunk, but here's some I love anyways:
SAGA
Sky Doll
Nonplayer - This one is only one issue. The guy got a movie deal right after publication and hasn't come out with more since. :( Best to find it online vs getting a hold of a physical copy.
Squee - this was is kinda random haha, but it popped in my head. It's not all cyberpunk but it's weird, and it's Vasquez, and it might be a fun read.

Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe, Volume 2. Funny, reasonably accurate, not at all a textbook. Not available, unfortunately, as an audiobook.

u/rarelyserious · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I've got 3 books going right now. I can't decide on what new book to read, so I'm rereading The Knight, Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town, and The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes.

This reminds me of a series I read many times throughout my teens:

Cartoon History of the Universe 1 Vol. 1-7: From the Big Bang to Alexander the Great, by Larry Gonick

See also, other volumes in the set:

The Cartoon History of the Universe II, Volumes 8-13: From the Springtime of China to the Fall of Rome (Pt.2)

The Cartoon History of the Universe III: From the Rise of Arabia to the Renaissance

NOTE: All contain somewhat mature language and illustrations, hence probably ~PG-13ish.

EDIT: I was misremembering the source.

I recommend this book to everyone, regardless of age - It's Super clever and reads well for all ages.

I see that you like cross stitch ! I have always admired how cute they can be and the work put into them.

There is a kit i think is really cute ! Pusheen: A Cross-Stitch Kit

u/Craig · 1 pointr/explainlikeimfive

It is from Edward Gorey's Gashlycrumb Tinies which you will typically find published along with a bunch of his other works as a single volume: Amphigory, although you can also buy it as a poster. The other stuff in Amphigory is priceless, though, so that's the way to go.

u/kane3232 · 1 pointr/WatchPeopleDieInside

This must be an ad for this book

I've started crossstitching. A little. My advice is don't start with this. Crossstitch is not difficult in itself. It's the pattern complexity that creates difficulty. The number of colors, size of the pattern, even the size of the cloth can make a pattern much harder.

If you want to start, get a really easy pattern. I'm talking 2 square inches. This is what I started on: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0762492279/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_An5BCbNRGF35Z it took me ~8 hours. You'll know by the end if you want to try something more difficult.

u/Mat_the_Duck_Lord · 1 pointr/DMAcademy

One of my players made the mistake of talking to some dolphins during a recent session. Spoiler: dolphins are assholes and sexist in real life, not to mention DND.

Here is a book about it https://www.amazon.com/Reasons-Dolphin-Useful-Guides-Oatmeal/dp/1449401163

At the risk of coming across as facetious, I will say that there is an actual starting point, namely. Barring that I would highly recommend any of the Essential, Authoritative, or Indispensable collections, mostly because I like the format of those books the best for lounging and reading, but it could be argued they also contain the best collection, the Authoritative is my favourite. In truth I don't believe you can go wrong no matter where you choose to start, they are all more or less equally hilarious, and he doesn't generally reference old strips so you can start with any strip.

I envy your discovery of Watterson's wonderful world.

u/FreeDirt · 1 pointr/atheism

I've decided to start reading the Calvin and Hobbes series. These all came from the book I'm reading: Calvin and Hobbes Book 1 by Bill Watterson. (Amazon, if you're curious)

u/Manfromporlock · 1 pointr/AskHistorians

A great source for a teen is Larry Gonick's The Cartoon History of the Universe (specifically, volume 2: https://www.amazon.com/Cartoon-History-Universe-Volumes-8-13/dp/0385420935).

It's accessible and funny, but it's also carefully done.
