Costs 10 more bucks on amazon and comes with a 512 Gigabyte SSD

Seriously, ya'll are putting together all this stuff, $500+ worth of parts which is great for us but you aren't thinking about your target audience. Browsing the web and writing books. That was the use case. You're going to build her a desktop computer with a dedicated GPU and all that for a use case of browsing the web and writing books?

IMO she might be happier if she gets the option to not be stuck writing at a desk all day and can instead relax on a couch writing.

Go spend the money on a quality Chromebook, and if you want to give her the desktop experience too, pick up a nice monitor to go with it while you're at it. No dealing with viruses either.

> 14 hours a week of movies/TV/chatting with friends/reading

Literally all of that could be done for a tiny fraction of the price on a Chromebook. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CVOLVPA/

Seriously, 12 hour battery life, 1080p IPS screen, 4 GB of RAM. You should look into returning that Powerbook...

u/Live4evil · 24 pointsr/Amd

Looks pretty similar to the Acer Aspire 5 so for an extra $70 the differences are:

256GB SSD vs 1 TB HDD
MX150 vs Vega 8 iGPU

>i mainly want to use the Cliffhouse environment to use as an office and watch movies.

No you don't. That's garbage. Double your budget.

$299 for an aluminum, 1080p Chromebook with 4gb of ram and a 32gb storage is a steal.

EDIT: Not using SSD.

u/ObviouslyTriggered · 16 pointsr/Amd

Mobile parts don't have an IHS so what the fuck are you even on about.
As for the throttling I have this laptop https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX at home unless you arer running on battery the Kabby Lake R CPUs clocks to well over 3ghz on all core Turbo and stays there for a long while.
The only time I've seen it even downclock to below 3.0ghz is when running Prime95 in with AVX2 which does pretty much pushes it against it's 15W thermal limit.

u/furionking · 14 pointsr/buildapcsales

this HP sold by VIP outlet is always around 530 (refurb), with the exact same specs. so while this Omen is a good deal it isn't hard to find https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B077S27YLP/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=all

u/PastyPilgrim · 11 pointsr/AskComputerScience

You could get through a CS degree with just a raspberry pi and a 32GB SD card; you really don't need any serious power. I'll give you the same advice that I give everyone asking about what computer to get for a CS program: build a powerful desktop because that's fun, will teach you a little about components, and will let you do anything you'll ever want to do. And buy a chromebook and install Linux with crouton, which will allow you to bring a super lightweight laptop to your classes that will do everything you want (email, text processing, etc on Google's OS and programming on the Linux OS) and will have a battery that will last you all week (seriously, I just charged mine on the weekend).

Since it looks like your budget is <1700$, you could have fun building an awesome PC for $1200 plus maybe a bit more if you want a nice monitor and keyboard, and get yourself a chromebook for $300. Then you're set.

This Acer Aspire 5? https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD

If so, then you certainly don't have a hardware issue. I would recommend making sure all your drivers are up to date and checking the integrity of the game files on your game. (just google it if you aren't sure how)

Asus Zenbook UX305UA

749$ on amazon

13 inches, 1920x1080, Core i5 6200, 8 GB Ram, 256 GB SSD, realistic 10 hour battery life.

Bought one this week. Love it. Identical in appearance to a Macbook Air, but running the latest hardware (i5 6200)... Here is a review of a similar model, but the review's battery life is based on a model running a 4k screen, where as I linked / bought a 1080p screen model.

u/dirtyultraface · 9 pointsr/Tallahassee

I think you'll have a hard time selling it then, since it's 750 on amazon

u/zerro_4 · 8 pointsr/linux

This is what I have:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Aluminum-Quad-Core-CB3-431-C5FM/dp/B01CVOLVPA

It is on the north end of size and price as far as chromebooks go. 1920x1080, but it isn't a touchscreen. This is what got confused for a macbook air :P I should also mention that the wife finds it acceptable (she uses a Surface pro 4)

You can follow instructions do put it in dev mode and get a Ubuntu chroot going or wipe and do a full install of your preferred OS. If I am going to write some python and screw around with my raspberry Pis, I use the ubuntu jail. If I want to watch you tube or google play music, I hotkey over to the chromeOS.

I have some nordic frost giant blood in me, so I don't really mind it being the size of a "normal" laptop. But an 11" or 12" with touchscreen/hybrid set up would be good for a workshop or lab around the $200.
Pay attention to what processor is under the hood. there is a narrow range of stuff, but some are ARM processors (Rockchip, etc) and some are Intel x86 (Celeron, Atom). The ARM based chromebooks are really cheap, but not much better than a crappy tablet and a keyboard.
I would recomment to not spend more than 300...but don't spend less than 120ish on a chromebook.

u/b4ux1t3 · 8 pointsr/raspberry_pi

No.

The Pi is a learning platform. The idea behind it is that you learn about programming and electronics using the Pi and then you move on to developing things on more-powerful computers.

The fact that people make all these amazing things with the Pi is a testament to their creativity and ingenuity, not the Pi's power.

If you just want something that can browse the internet and edit documents, get a Chromebook. The cheapest one is $250 and I can guarantee you (as I bought that exact one) that is excels at web browsing and using Google Drive (which you should be using anyway :P).

If you want a full-on computer for pretty cheap, I recommend one of the various decently-specced notebooks out there. You can get a notebook for as little as $500, and they'll be able to do anything you want short of playing Call of Halo: Modern Black Ops 8 on ultra-beast settings.

EDIT: Or you could pony up, spend about a grand on a nice, custom-built computer that you can upgrade and that will last you forever. That's what I did. -shrug-

A more budget friendly option to look into is something like the Acer V15 Nitro for $915. It has an all black aluminum build that isn't too gaudy looking. It also has pretty decent specs with a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 960M graphics card, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. The ram and storage are also upgradable. It's 960M will work fine for most games on the market (and excel with light games like Overwatch), but more graphic intensive games will have to have settings turned down. It also isn't too heavy, has a full 1080p IPS display, and an okay battery life.

If you don't think you'll need a quad core but still want a bit of gaming potential (fine for light / moderate games), the ASUS K501 would work fine. It only has a dual core processor though, which may struggle with more CPU intensive games. It has a pretty sleek appearance though, and it's much lighter than most gaming laptops at 4.4 pounds.

On more powerful machines, you could look into the Gigabyte P55W for $1250. It also has a mostly black aluminum exterior with a few white highlights. It is more powerful with a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 16gb of ram, 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD, and a GTX 1060 graphics card. You could easily play any game on the market with this, and only will top intensity games have to be played with reduced settings.

And if you want something at the top of your budget, maybe look into the Clevo Prostar for $1600. It is also pretty sleek when the RGB backlit on the keyboard is turned off. It has similar specs to the gigabyte but with a GTX 1070 graphics card which is ~50% more powerful than the 1060. It's not completely necessary, but if you're really looking for a machine with a ton of power and you can spare the money, it may be worth looking into.

u/legos45 · 8 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I understand, laptop shopping can be ridiculous difficult if you don't understand components. That's alright, that's what we're here for!

I'd recommend the Acer Swift 3, its a bit below budget but should be able to get the job done. It has:

  • i5-8250U 4-core processor

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 256 GB SSD storage

  • 1080p 14" display

  • MX150 2 GB graphics card

  • Weight of 3.8lbs and battery life up to 10 hours

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. I'm not sure if you'll necessarily need 16 GB of RAM, and if so that would be kind of hard to achieve in your range. But the components in this laptop should be fine for creating a Linux-based OS.

If you are okay with something a bit heavier, the Dell G5 which is a tad bit over budget will surpass your target for specifications.
u/InuKaT · 7 pointsr/uwaterloo

Black Friday is coming up, so I highly recommend waiting until then to see if there are any deals if you can put up with your current laptop for another 2 weeks.

Otherwise some of my current recommendations include these

Asus Zenbook 2in1. Generally 2 in 1s are pretty bleh but at $920 I think it checks off what you need.

Lenovo currently has this 14 Inch ThinkBook for $941.

If you have Amazon Prime and don't mind buying an open box product, I also recommend checking out Amazon Warehouse. There are some nice laptops selling at a discounted price. If you don't like it, it's always easy to return (bought a new laptop for school during the spring term through the warehouse). Just make sure to check the condition ("Very Good" is usually basically brand new but YMMV)

Pretty much anything you go with will be better than a 5 year old EEEPC. If you're feeling particularly daring, look into a chrome book.

There are some sales on Amazon you can check out.

This one has Intel HD5500 graphics.
This one has HD520 which are better.

Those will even run things like Rocket League, which I've player on a laptop with a i5-3370u and HD4000 graphics.

New Deal

Dell i7577 buying it from the "Other Seller" section will buy it from Amazon directly at 999, prime eliegiable and with free shipping.

Specs :

  • 7th Gen Intel Core i5, GTX 1060 6GB Graphics, 8GB Memory, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 15.6 Full HD IPS
u/techstar2000 · 6 pointsr/LaptopDeals

For under $1000, I would go for this Dell i7577-5241BLK-PUS Inspiron with the gtx 1060 graphics card , 8 GB RAM , fast 128 GB SSD plus a large 1 TB HDD... It also has a decent heat manage system and good display. Since you already have an SSD though, you could get this one with only one storage drive and add your 1 TB SSD to the empty drive.

u/elvinelmo · 6 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Since you want this laptop to be somewhat future proof getting a a good GPU is vital, check out the *Dell i7577-5241BLK-PUS**

  • 15.6" FHD IPS
  • 7th Gen Intel Core i5-7300HQ,
  • GTX 1060 6GB Graphics,
  • 8GB Memory,
  • 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD,
  • 5.76 lbs

A powerful gaming laptop which provides great value with a powerful GTX 1060 and a quad core CPU for below $1000. The system will boot quickly with the OS on the fast SSD and videos, pictures and large files can be stored on the HDD. Alternatively, if you want to use your max budget you cant beat the Acer Predator Helios 300

u/MechAegis · 6 pointsr/buildapcsales

In the same boat and eyeing a couple deals from walmart. If you have not already, take a look at the Asus Vivobook for $249 if you're will to spend a 100 more totaling at 399.99 - HP Pavilion Laptop is what interests me.

Edit: another to consider is the Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop i5-8265U - $399.99

OR

Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop Ryzen 3 3200U - $259.99

Good Luck

  • The easiest way to print from a Chromebook is to a printer that supports Google Cloud Print. There are other ways but they are not fully supported or require an intermediary. https://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/printers/
  • You can plug in external devices to Chromebooks no problem but remember that they generally have very limited disk space - consumer Chromebooks tend to have between 16 and 64 GBs of disk space so it won't be great as a media hub. Also, your options for photo editing are much weaker than on MacOS.
  • ChromeOS is at its core a Chrome browser. So it can cast to Chromecasts naively. It looks like there are Chrome extensions to cast to Roku but I have never tried them.

I love my Chromebook but I have a Cloud Print compatible printer and have moved a lot of things to the cloud so the lack of local storage does not bother me.

The Acer CB14 is nice if you want a big screen. It can be hard for under $200 if you are ok with a refurb and hunt around (Amazon for spec/review purposes only) https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Aluminum-Quad-Core-CB3-431-C5FM/dp/B01CVOLVPA

If you don't need a screen that big and can spend some more, you can usually find a Samsung Chromebook Plus on Amazon Warehouse Deals for $350 or less. That has an amazing screen and supports Android Apps out of the box. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-Convertible-Laptop-XE513C24-K01US/dp/B01LZ6XKS6

Choosing ChromeOS is becoming a a viable option for everyone but it is a lifestyle change if you are used to a vast application library and ample local storage.

Think about this; vanilla was released in 2004. Hardware since then has evolved drastically, to the point where it's very hard to find hardware from 2004. Even the worst hardware, as long as it's modern, would run vanilla just fine, even with integrated graphics.

Do you need that for school? Its price tag is beyond a ripoff.

cheaper, better, it'll run current gen. If you need the drawing portion, I recommend just buying an art tablet with it. My only problem with it personally, the only company I've come to trust is Asus. Had bad experiences with MSI and HP, dell is kinda iffy. Now if you are really willing to spend in the 1000$ area, I recommend buying a laptop from Origin PC. Not cheap, but the equivalent to a desktop.

Tablets: (don't let wacom fuck you on prices, they're assholes, their shits made in China yet they still charge out the ass because their brand is well known, you can get another better Chinese tablet for a quart of the price. u/CyberJeeves · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You're welcome! How much does portability factor into this? If you wouldn't mind a 6 pound laptop, then the ASUS N550JK-DS71T would be a fine choice too. It has:

  • i7 4700HQ quad core CPU
  • 8GB ram (you can upgrade to 16GB)
  • 1TB HDD storage 5400RPM
  • 1920x1080 15.6” IPS glossy touchscreen (excellent image quality/viewing angles)
  • GTX 850M GPU w/ 2GB DDR3 memory (Maxwell core)
  • 5 hours of battery / 6 pounds heavy / 1.1” thick
  • Windows 8.1

While you don't game much, this GTX 850M would be much better than using integrated graphics, especially if you'd like to play CoD. The IPS 1080p touchscreen is actually very nice if you don't need a QHD/3K screen.
u/construktz · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Absolutely the ASUS N550JK. Which is cheaper than $1150 from that link, by the way.

Since you're doing CAD and working with 3D modeling and graphics, you definitely want the high quality IPS touch display that comes with the Asus. IPS displays provide the best color reproduction and viewing angles which are really important for those purposes. I often suggest this for engineering students, or architecture of course.

It's slimmer, higher quality, has a MUCH better display, and will get better battery life than the Y510p. The Y510p is pretty much out of date now.

u/OrangeBuck · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

There are gaming laptops across the spectrum from $500 up to $2300. While filling out the sidebar form would yield the best recommendation, the Asus N550JK is honestly the best pick at $1000. The Nvidia GeForce 850M is a mid-range card that should do well for most things, and the laptop itself is a solid piece of metal. Definitely the best thousand-dollar laptop on the market (at the price of minimal portability).

$500 : Acer Aspire E5 571G : Very low end. Not great perfomance.
$750 : Lenovo Y40 : Surprisingly good performance and a good budget pick as the little brother to the Y50.
$1000 : Asus N550JK : Best Value or whatever
$1250 : Asus UX 303LN : Starting to get much better portability in exchange for some performance.
$1500 : Gigabyte P34Gv2 : Best laptop that combines portability and power in exchange for a terrible (4 hrs) battery.

Above this are the Razer Blades and MSI GT lines. I know nothing of these realms besides their superiority.

u/i-know-not · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Hello,

Lasting 4-5 years is not a frequent thing for laptops. Lasting 4-5 years AND portable AND 15"? ...well ^challenge ^accepted ^^probably ^^not
After 4-5 years, the battery life on any laptop will be crap. Like less than a third of the original battery life. The battery life will end up being too short for you to carry your laptop around, or you would need to find a laptop with a replaceable battery. Replaceable battery would rule out a lot of ultrabooks, leaving you with 5+ lb laptops to choose from.

Portability also means less space and less weight budget for cooling parts. Portable devices have to run at lower performance in order not to generate too much heat.

I also like to say this a lot, but if you want to keep your laptop at a decent amount of performance for that long, you really need to know your way around Windows, and disable/remove anything that you don't need but may affect performance. Remember that performance of new computers doubles every few years.

Let's compromise!^ugh

I searched Amazon and Newegg, but you may want too look for more retailers.

Search criteria:

6 lbs max

15" or more

Intel i5 or i7, must be 4th gen. I tried to stick to i7 though

$1000 max

Maybe aluminum

Here are some of your options:

u/Godsbosscraig · 5 pointsr/pcmasterrace

you're fairly limited in the 400-500 dollar range. I would suggest checking out acer's aspire lineup or dell's inspiron lineup. Make sure it has more than 4gb of ram, and try to find something with an i5 or better. this is a fairly good option. Just look at the system requirements found here for general guidlines on a computer for WoW

u/lskennedy · 5 pointsr/lowendgaming

I'm guessing you're looking at this laptop for the i5 setup:

Acer Aspire E5-573G 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (Intel Core i5 5200U, 8GB, 1TB, NVIDIA GeForce 940M 2GB, Windows 10 Home)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012IBOCRU/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_6kGQwb103YXQB

I can pretty much say there isn't a better laptop at that price.

u/DonnyJoseph0 · 5 pointsr/buildapcsales

Not on Newegg but this one is pretty good for $700.

https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-GXIVR8020A5-Desktop-i5-8400-Processor/dp/B07B6H4GNY/

Not to mention you could buy the RTX 2080 separately and still come out ahead. And that's before selling the RX 580.

u/davidbenett · 5 pointsr/laptops

The Acer Swift 3 with an i5-8250U and MX150 has popped up on Amazon, purportedly shipping in 1-2 months, so I'd guess during the month of September we'll be seeing more laptops available.

I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NBL8BER/ref=od_aui_detailpages01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And I'm immensely pleased with it. Personal recommendation is find a prebuilt configuration from like Amazon or somewhere. Doing a custom build from them is more expensive than building it yourself, but a prebuilt is around the same. you get a solid keyboard and mouse from them too. I was on a budget of 1200, and I got a pretty shit monitor, but for the PC I run PUBG on Medium and Ghost Recon Wildlands on High both topping over 60fps. the only difference between mine and the one in the link is that I have an i5-7500 not an i7.

u/PM_ME_UR_CATS_ASS · 5 pointsr/techsupport

You won't get a quality Windows laptop for that price. Chromebook would be the way to go IMO. Here's probably the best one sub $300 IMO.

If you're looking for top-of-the-line, this one is usually regarded as the best:
https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-Intel-12-5-Inch-Touchscreen-storage/dp/B01N5G5PG2

Chromebook's can't do a lot like storing files locally and running Windows programs, but you have access to android web store, all of Google products plus extra storage for Drive. I know Office is still compatible with it so menial work and tasks could be done as well.

u/domthegamer · 5 pointsr/pcmasterrace

This one is a pretty good deal right now (Although in some triple A games, if you crank up the AA 3gb may not be sufficient, but otherwise at 1080p it should do decent).

u/Juslivin · 4 pointsr/playrust

I just got the new Acer vx 15 laptop. I opted for the one with and i7 and 1050ti. It's great. Handles rust like a champ. The only negative thing is the 256 gig ssd it comes with but they will send you an extra sdd bay to install yourself free.

Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop, 7th Gen Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 15.6 Full HD, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, VX5-591G-75RM https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Xmm-yb1J1YJ61

The one I got was the higher end one but I believe it starts out at 799 with an i5.

u/The---Technician · 4 pointsr/LaptopDeals

PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds is a pretty demanding game... This Acer VX 15 with the powerful 7th gen quad core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, fast SSD and solid gtx 1050 ti dedicated graphics card will run it pretty well and of course, will get all your school tasks done.

u/kverberk · 4 pointsr/chromeos

I would suggest the [Acer R11 for $269USD](https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Convertible-11-6-Inch-CB5-132T-C1LK/dp/B01J42JPJG/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483770071&sr=1-2&keywords=acer+r+13 "Amazon Link to purchase") if you're really on a tight budget, but you're going down to 11.6", which may in the end be better for portability if you're still lugging back and forth from classes. It also has Android Apps in the stable channel which is a bonus. Just make sure if you get the R11 that you get the 4Gb Ram model or else Android won't run well on it anyway. My previous chromebook was the Acer C720P, which has the same screen size, and it was nice and light to carry around from work, home, and travelling, and was the laptop that I've used for most of my Master's degree and works well for typing long papers. The [Asus Chromebook Flip (1) at $259USD](https://www.amazon.com/C100PA-DB02-10-1-inch-Chromebook-1-8GHz-Operation/dp/B00ZS4HK0Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483771163&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+Chromebook+flip "Amazon Link to purchase") is nice, but in my opinion the keyboard is too cramped to be used as a computer to write anything longer than a facebook or reddit post, which I imagine why your original post requested info on 13"-ers, and 16Gb storage is too small for the future anyway.

I honestly can say it's overall the best computer I've ever owned and in my opinion the best value for a computer that money can buy. That being said, $400 is a lot of money for a student, but if you can afford it, it's definitley the one I'd recommend for you. Original price was $1,249.00. That's $349.01 off (28% savings).

I must say this is the best deal for a VR ready laptop that I've seen. And I got a $40 Amazon credit for getting approved on an Amazon credit card (which I didn't use) which brought my total to only $945 with 2 day Prime shipping. That's a total of $400 savings for me.

again, why are you only going for other overpriced laptops instead of reasonable priced laptops? why avoid the actual ones that refute your argument? Nobody is arguing that macbooks are the only overpriced laptops, NOBODY is, but they sure as hell ARE overpriced

-------

literally just a quick search: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1495823671&sr=1-1&keywords=laptop&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289792011%2Cp_n_feature_twelve_browse-bin%3A9521908011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A13580790011

a macbook with the same specs 15", 16GB DDR4 ram, 256GB SSD, 7th gen i7, with a way worse graphics card (Radeon 460 Pro [benchmark score 6963] vs this laptop's 1050 TI [benchmark score 8911]) would cost $2,900

so you're telling me, a $2,900 macbook with a worse graphics card all else being the same is not overpriced vs this $1000 laptop? Are you going to then argue to me that "build quality" is worth an additional $1,900? lol please that's absolutely laughable

you're wrong, they ARE overpriced.

don't get me wrong, I don't judge, if you want to buy an overpriced laptop because of brand name, more power to you. but don't try to argue that it's not overpriced, because you're wrong it absolutely 100% is overpriced and using other overpriced laptops as an argument isn't an argument

u/Kyzriel · 4 pointsr/iRacing

The Razer Blade Stealth is honestly pretty overpriced for what you get. You can get something much more capable for ~$700-$800 that could gladly play whatever games you want it to, and shouldn't have terrible battery life either when not gaming.

Also, keep in mind you could gladly fit a modest mid-range build that can walk all over most gaming laptops into an HTPC case for $800-$1000 and still have money leftover for a beefy work laptop if you can afford $1500 for the Razer Blade Stealth.

My general recommendation is to seriously just put in the ~hour it takes to watch one of the better assembly tutorials on youtube. Any decent component purchased from a reputable retailer will have return options in the event something comes Dead On Arrival, and unless you go out of your way it's hard to fuck up PC assembly bad enough to cause damage. Prebuilts almost as a rule come with something on the order of a 70%+ markup over their parts' value and like to cut corners.

As for figuring out which parts to use for a good, balanced build for a given budget; I'd recommend using the ever-venerable Logical Increments guide as a jumping-off point and putting together a shopping list using PC Part Picker. (Which has its own community-driven build recommendations.)

But if you absolutely need a game-ready desktop out of the box, the HP Pavilion Power series is generally the way to go: The price on that particular model is actually pretty damn good, and it'll run pretty much whatever you want at 1080/60+. I'd still recommend picking up a 120-250GB SSD to put in there to run Windows on though.

on sale for 699, it's new, has a superior CPU, and a superior GPU, the two most important parts of the system.

Lacks an SSD, but SSDs are only $40 dollars these days, so you can easily add it yourself (just buy a SATA3 cable to connect to motherboard), and install windows 10 onto it.

For gaming, especially just fortnite types of games, 8GB of RAM is plenty.

If you want to buy the local PC, maybe show him this amazon deal as a bargaining tool, and tell him to bring that deal down to $550, then I think it'd be more worth it.

Hi,

Based on your requirements I have made this noteb search

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

An option for you might be this one: Dell Inspiron 15 7577 Gaming - combines power and low cost perfectly - you can find the configuration I gave you here for 750$ or on amazon from 940$

Another option might be this one: Dell Inspiron 15 7567 Gaming - this one is slightly weaker but with a better battery life - you can find the configuration I gave you on amazon for 780$

u/Fog_Terminator · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Honestly, I think you'd be lucky to get a laptop that can run WoW with low settings and that budget, and its most likely impossible to run it at Mid-High settings. Here's the best I could find:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CGGOZOM

It's a bit over budget ($460), but it should run WoW. If you want to do some more research for yourself, I'd recommend looking at lists like this one, comparing the specs they give to the minimum specs required for WoW. You can use this website to compare the capabilities of different CPUs & GPUs against each other.

> zakładając że to już jest to co powiesz o tym komputerze?

Apple to firma która jak zauważyłeś korzysta z identycznych podzespołów co inne komputery.

Jedyny Mac z 2012 z i5 który znalazłem to ten:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

Najważniejsze co dla mnie się liczy w pracy przy komputerze to ile mogę pomieścić pikseli i jak sprawnie te piksele będą wyświetlane. Na podanej stronie znalazłem najważniejsze elementy:

      Processor

  • 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB L3 cache

    Display

  • Supported resolutions: 1280 by 800 (native)

    Graphics and Video Support

  • Intel HD Graphics 4000

Jeśli to ten sam (MacBook Pro 13 calowy) to Apple sprytnie pominął jaki model procesora użyli, ale z dalszego poszukiwania zidentyfikowałem go jako 2,5GHz model i5-3210M [link].

Podsumowując: słaby procesor, mała rozdzielczość wyświetlacza i brak dedykowanej karty graficznej.

This, but minus 1TB of storage and prioritize the SSD.

SSDs are the single best upgrade for loading times (which in CS can get quite long with lots of mods and assets), and general "snappiness" of the machine.

1TB is over-kill for most, and if you run low on storage for photos etc you can easily buy an external HDD or NAS for not very much money at all.

A 256GB SSD will do the job just fine for Cities Skylines, a couple of other games, and some documents, but 500GB is more comfortable if you want to install other large games. More than that is un-necessary unless you want to store a large number of videos too.

Something like this would be ideal for $900.

Or this for a little less money for $800. It will perform a little worse for CS (slightly worse CPU), a little better in most other games (better graphics card), and has less storage, but is cheaper.

And at $700, this is the cheapest I'd probably bother with, as you start to lose a little too much performance when you drop significantly below this level.

If the above is too expensive, though, dropping the SSD can get you this which is a bit of a compromise but should still run CS well enough and is hard to argue with at $525

Edit: Although I'll add that I'm not American and just grabbed these for example purposes: you may be able to find better deals for comparable specifications.

Windows laptop: ASUS Zenbook UX305UA 13.3-Inch Laptop (6th Generation Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10), Titanium Gold https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BMERZJ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EUNpxbVK8FWRH

Mac: Whatever their latest 13 inch is.

13 is a nice sweet spot for screen size and portability. Asus is nice for price, and the zenbook line comes with a free year of accidental damage warranty, which is what makes it top pick for my recommendation to students. My brother got a core M version, so less powerful, little cheaper, but does everything he needs. Macs are Macs. No gaming on either really, if you care. 1080/full HD is generally fine on a 13 inch, and saves on battery vs high res.

Dell XPS 13s are going for a decent price now too. I have a high end developer edition (Linux) and really like its form factor and power. The normal line comes with Windows of course. Going with an i5 w/ 8 gigs of RAM should be fine for any work you're doing.

>I'm not an artist.

then your overly-expensive screen is entirely a moneysink; This is literally the only time it offers an advantage, since all movies currently are rendered "HD" at 1080p. If there is something I'm missing here, please correct me. It's not just every practical purpose, it's that you literally cannot use those pixels unless you are doing something that you just admitted you don't do; beyond 1920x1080, movies don't render any sharper on a better display.

Also, if you aren't an artist, I'm at a loss for why the idea of art and music programs for mac are a plus?

>Fair point. But if mine breaks, I can walk into the apple store and have them replace it for free (for the first year, at least).

To be fair, I picked the ASUS semi-randomly based on the graphics card; new that same model is still $1,300 from Amazon but if memory serves, ASUS supports their refurbished laptops pretty well also. But a year's warranty is pretty standard on any new computer.

>No it does not. And I have never needed it. Software isn't installed via CD any more. And any movies I watch are on my computer aren't DVDs or Blu-Ray.

And I own movies on DVD or Blu-Ray. I also do heavy IT work, and need something that might need to read a driver CD; I could carry around an external drive, but that's extra money and negates a lot of the portability/ease of use. Again, this is personal preference, which is what a lot of things are.

>Damn right it's personal preference. What's your point?

I'm pointing out these things in advance because otherwise the argument would've been "This isn't the same at all, look, the hard drives are different"; I'm even giving you it as an advantage over the ASUS so I don't know exactly why this is a mac knock? The new ASUS has an option with a 256gb SSD that is at $1,600 but that also comes with double the RAM of the Macbook so I was trying to go with the best equivalent.

>I'm not saying that my computer is the best that exists. I'm saying that for what I paid, I'm not getting ripped off

I think you're paying for aesthetics and prettiness. Which is fine if that is worth it to you, but for a PC that has the same stuff, minus the extraneous display (which is where I feel you're really getting ripped off) then you're looking at good savings for a machine that will do the same thing.

u/chfr · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I personally doubt it'd be worth it. Broadwell CPUs aren't expected to come out until late 2014/early 2015. The 8xx series is just rolling out now and the 850 and 860 are a month old at most. This means that you won't get a cpu or gpu upgrade for roughly a 3/4 of a year (and even then it can take awhile for a good computer to utilize the new parts). Right now the Asus N550JK and Y50 are brand new and seem to be the best laptops within an $1100 budget. There's always going to be something new around the corner, but right now is definitely a good time to buy since no new architecture is right around the corner.

Check out the Asus Zenbook lineup. I got the UX305UA two years ago and I fucking love it.

I was torn between the XPS, Yoga, and Surface but I don't regret my decision at all.

I didn't choose XPS because of the weird camera placement and its design didn't suit me. The MS Surface had terrible battery life and I still see my friends struggling with their surfaces, lol.

___

Things I love about the ux305:

  • Design is super clean and made out of aluminum. It feels very rich.

  • Screen is bright and color accurate.

  • Lightweight, you can really stuff the laptop anywhere you want, lol.

  • The laptop runs ice cold while having the fan run very quietly. It's amazing.

  • Trackpad has a 'glass' texture to it with subtly glitter-finish to it, it's captivating to say the least.

  • Keyboard key-travel is short but precise and firm. Hands down the best keyboard I used.

  • Even after 2 years, I still get solid 9 hours of battery if I use WiFi sparingly with medium brightness. Few weeks ago I forgot my charger and had to stay at a job location from 9pm to 5pm coding. I left the site with 15% charge!

That's a good laptop, but I'd save money to get a better one, for like $600 you can get a beast that will last for a lot of years.

This one is A BEAST that run games, and everything you want. Even video editing is possible here.

In my opinion you'll regret if you buy a laptop worse than this one. Cheap laptops are useless nowadays. Maybe in the future there're nice cheap laptops, but today, they're horrible.

u/ice0rb · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Considering MGS:V is arguably a difficult game to play for a laptop, I recommend the Acer Aspire 5. It's not the most beautiful or the thinnest but it is really value packed, a dGPU and a 8th gen i5 for $570. The screen and the speakers aren't the best, but for your price they're decent.

Generally speaking the MX150 is the best dGPU in this price point up to maybe $1300ish.

For 600$ you can get her a dedicated Mx150 GPU, and for $650 she can have a 1050 Ti

$650 $600 $500 $400

Just remember everything below $600 does not have a discrete GPU, and the settings for sims might have to be turned down a decent amount.

(Or you could build a second PC for her, if she’s moved in with you ;) )

Well, there is Acer's Predator Helios 300. I've been searching for a while now and i found it really great, looking at its price (1050$ on Amazon), It's specs are really good too, with a GTX 1060 6g gpu, an i7-7700 cpu, 16g of ram and a 256 ssd. And there is the Dell inspiron 15 with almost the same specs (half the ssd and and extra 1T HDD) but it costs an extra 100$.

Im really confused between those two laptops since my budget is limited and i could use the additional 100$ on the dell's to get a gaming mouse and headphones,.. etc. I've seen a bunch of reviews on both, and they seem to be fine, so - even with the bad previous experience with Acer- I'm still leaning toward their gaming laptop (purely because of the 100$ tho).

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078XL5R1M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_m4.YAbKG63QV1

This will run FF14 at the highest settings, and if you install it in the SSD it will also increase load times by a factor of 4. It can run most current games around mid-high settings as well.

u/SupremeShogan · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I just bought one off of Amazon thanks to their 5 month financing deal which made the purchase alot easier and I should get it in a couple of days so I can give it some tests and let you know about the finer details.

I would also check out this guys site https://shopineer.com/laptops/Acer-Predator-Helios-300-Gaming-Laptop-Intel-Core-i7-7700HQ-NH-Q28AA-001. He has benchmarks for a bunch of laptops and keeps it up to date pretty frequently. Highly recommend it!

But in the short run, yeah I've heard good things about it and it seems like a really solid laptop, but another one people suggested was this Dell Inspiron on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0764HW117/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_6OacBb5TYQVJT. It's also a really solid laptop and it's cheaper. But it's not on Amazons 5 month deal thing.

u/SOROS_CHEQUE_IN_MAIL · 3 pointsr/intel

> ill get a decent GPU (about equal to a 1030) + SSD under 1000$.

Lol

u/EnmityTrigger · 3 pointsr/visualnovels

You may want to consider a laptop instead of a desktop if you do not intend to play graphically intensive games. Even cheap laptops can run any visual novel.

Tbh I'd go for a laptop if you want to spend less than 500 usd. Desktops are expensive because you also need a monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

Depending on your needs I'd go with a 15.6 inch laptop.

Try to find a laptop with a 8th Gen Intel i3 processor, with 256 GB of storage and 8 GB ram. This should be good for internet and office work while also playing Visual novels.

Something like this is cheap but and with decent performance https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=laptop&qid=1571258070&rnid=2941120011&s=pc&sr=1-3
But if you can spend 500 usd, then something like this will last you longer: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=laptop&qid=1571258070&rnid=2941120011&s=pc&sr=1-4

But look around for good deals. Sometimes you can find good laptops for little money.

u/2fast4u123 · 3 pointsr/suggestapc

Hi! Although I have never used Clip Studio Paint, I use Paint Tool SAI and Adobe Animate very often so I'm going to hope they are relatively similar. I'm going to assume CSP is going to be a bit more resource intensive than SAI, but I'm certain nearly everything from this decade will do fine with that program. As for Photoshop, you have a few choices (I'm going to stick with 8th gen CPUs for now, the 9th gen ones are coming but it's still too early. If you want to go that route I'd suggest waiting for a few months.) The i5 8th gen is going to be cheaper but will perform about 15% worse in photoshop compared to the i7 8th gen. $900 is at that annoying border between a 1060 and 1070. However, this won't help much with digital art.

[$756] Dell Inspiron - i5 8th gen, 1060 3gb, it should do great with Photoshop and you'll be able to play games well. Streaming should be no problem (it's more dependent on your internet connection) and dual monitors is going to require a little bit of fiddling. If I remember correctly, the 1060 has 1 HDMI and 3 DPorts (someone correct me if I'm wrong), HDMI will work with no problem but you'll have to fiddle a little with the DPorts. Shouldn't be that much of a problem though. Use code Eleven11 at checkout to save 11%.

[$690] Dell Inspiron - You'll still be able to play Overwatch without a GPU but it won't be the greatest experience. This has an i7 8th gen, should do better than the i5 8th gen by a noticeable margin. This will save you a bit of money with the tradeoff of weak gaming performance. Don't forget to use Eleven11 at checkout.

[$686] HP Pavilion Power - Same as above but has a 7th gen i5. 7th gen vs 8th gen is about a 40-50% improvement. However, PS can't really take advantage of the extra cores on the 8th gen i5 so you'd probably only be looking at about 15-20% improvement (take this with a grain of salt, I don't have any hard benchmarks). Get this if you want to save a bit of money for relatively similiar performance.

Besides the Dell systems, I'd recommend waiting for Black Friday. I'm sure there will be desktop deals that are better than these. For reference, I'd go for at least an i5 8th gen, and at least a 1050ti, nothing less. Good luck!

I’m not Canadian, but I’ll try to help.

This PC is a great build with an awesome CPU and a decent GPU but lacks both an SSD and 16 gigs of RAM, both necessary for future-proofing. (The SSD is necessary now, but you can hold off with 8 gigs of ram) Sadly, I can’t find builds that are less than 1k CAD with anything similar or better than this with more RAM or an SSD.

I recommend getting a separate SSD like this. (You can always do the cheaper 250 gb variant for less money). I recommend this SSD because it is one of the fastest and comes with amazing Windows 10 cloning software. this guide is how I installed mine (just ignore the laptop specific parts like removing the battery. You can then order a SATA wire like this one to install your SSD. (If you don’t know where in the case you should put your SSD, just use 3M or double sided tape and tape it someone aesthetically pleasing on the bottom of the case.

The sata cables should be obvious where to install (on the right side of the motherboard, usually stacked on top of each other, slightly above or below the GPU), otherwise, you can look up your motherboard to find the SATA slots. Then just install the cloning software and follow the guide. When you need more RAM, look at the PCs ram slot and order another 8 gig stick (if there is only 1 stick of 8 gigs), otherwise, just order 16 gigs of any DDR4 ram you want. I’m sorry you need to do work to get a fully future proof machine, but remember this isn’t 100% needed, just highly recommended. (Plus you can save 100 bucks from your paycheck a few weeks from now for the SSD, you don’t need it the second u get ur pc. Good luck, let me know if you need any help!

P.S You don’t even need a big SSD, just something to hold Windows 10 and programs like Steam and Chrome. Big stuff like games can go on the HDD

$640 bucks, add this current amazon rift daily deal as well, and you're looking at a total under 1,000.

How much does a playstation cost? This rift deal is almost putting it in range of buying a playstation and PSVR bundle I would think.

u/jhalls13 · 3 pointsr/buildapc

If you must buy a pre-built this is much better and $720.

https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-GXiVR8020A2-Desktop-i5-7400-802-11AC/dp/B01NBL8BER/

Better CPU and better processor. There are some good build options listed by others though, but for pre-builds that is about as good as it gets and the price is competitive.

u/BearsEatGrub · 3 pointsr/suggestapc

No, that is an abhorrent processor. The games that you're playing aren't that demanding in the first place, but you still shouldn't be buying a five year old processor just now. I would recommend either this Intel system or this AMD system which are similarly specced. I would personally recommend the latter because it has an r5 1400 and a 580. I don't know what mobo is in the last system so I'm not sure if you can oc the CPU or not. It's probably an A320 and not a B350.

u/WSeabiscuit · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I second this. Upgrading to a sub-$200 graphics card is the most cost effective way to go about this. FX 8350 won't be too much better than the i5 2300, and a $65 Pentium G4560 is almost a side-grade; no meaningful improvement.
If the friend REALLY wants new, consider this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBL8BER/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=11413L9RV1HZK&coliid=I22HTJPFBR3522
a $720 pre-built form CyberpowerPC. Modern mid-range hardware that should outperform any aforementioned builds. If friend wants to build new: wait for AMD's new budget CPUs and go from there.

u/SirSheples · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I have this Laptop and it's pretty damn good for the price range, the i7 is good and so is the GPU.

u/laohacdepzai · 3 pointsr/laptops

In my opinion, if you have been using high-end PC specs (i7, GTX 870), you won't feel comfortable with using low performance processors of ultraportable laptops. The more sluggish feel of the laptop compared to your PC can be more or less annoying.
So I'd suggest getting a (slightly) bigger laptop because the difference in performance outweights the difference in weight (unless you plan to buy feather-light laptops like HP Spectre or LG Gram).
Check out this Dell Inspiron 7567 . It is a bit heavier, but has a sturdy chassis with a huge battery and a discrete GTX 1050, so you can play most game at medium or even high settings. Oh and it has backlit keyboard (red only, though).

u/LapNerd · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend Acer Swift 3 as it comes with: -

CPU: i5-8250U

GPU: GeForce MX150

RAM: 8

Display: FHD 14 IPS screen

Storage: 256 GB SSD,- HDD

Long battery life

It is a great choice because of its great heat management system and high build quality, along with its specifications makes it the best option for your usage and it is within your budget.

u/Joe10112 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I am looking to grab a 14" Laptop this Black Friday. No 15.6", feels too bulky for my friend.

Touchscreen and Rotation optional. SSD strongly preferred. Budget ~$600-800, lower is better though.

Should be able to play some small games (i.e. Overwatch) at good frame rates (60+ FPS) on Med-High, or maybe even some bigger games ("old" AAA games) at 45+ FPS, granted though it might be lower settings/resolution.

Given these specifications and your list, I am looking at the Acer Swift 3. It comes with a MX150 dedicated, which apparently is not too bad. My personal laptop (a few years old) has an 860m, and if the MX150 performs roughly the same as an 860m (from quick Google searches, that seems to be the case), then it should be fine (as in, hopefully moving forward for the next 3-4 years it will continue to be okay...) Also comes with 256 GB SSD, which is great as well.

I'm just wondering if, given those specifications, you have any other potential laptops that I should be looking at.

Thanks for putting together this list though! Very helpful.

The M375 Radeon graphics is capable of some light gaming (LoL, CS..etc) so your M365X is probably on par if not slower. For 880 euros? I think you could get a far better deal. Try to look for notebooks that have GTX 960m or newer. 970m, or gtx 1060 would be ideal for portable gaming. and there are many options available for that price range. I strongly advise you to go for gtx 1060. they are desktop chips.

and that 1GB of M365X isnt gonna help but bottleneck you.

I also upgraded it with a 500gb samsung evo 850 (~$170)

It all depends on how soon you need it.

The 1050 hasn't been announced for laptops yet let alone a release date so it could be a couple of months before we see it. If you need need laptop ASAP that's not an option.

OTOH, Nvidia just started releasing 3Gb models of the 1060 laptops which should be quite the power houses.

You can find the bran new ASUS FX502VM for only $899! That's going to be so much more powerful than the 960m and almost the same price.

I currently have a Lenovo Y50-70 and I am not a fan of it. While it does get the job done and it has served me well for the last several years, it has too many problems for me to recommend Lenovo to someone. Out of all of these I would say that the Dells and the MSI are the best. Acers are ok, but I consider them only slightly better quality than a Lenovo. At this point it mostly comes down to which brand you would want and which laptop looks the nicest to you. Personally I don't like the "gamer" look that the Acers have (and most laptops with a discrete GPU in them), so I would lean towards one of the Dells because they look the least "gamer" to me.

u/edit1754 · 3 pointsr/lowendgaming

In addition, if you're looking to buy a laptop with a GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti card, I would advise against buying the Dell Inspiron 7000 Gaming (7567), unless you really like the color gray (or are planning to replace the display).

The laptop uses a very low quality TN panel, with poor contrast and viewing angles, that render a grayish gradient in place of solid black, and produce an overall 'washed out' look. A screen this poor shouldn't exist in laptops costing this much, IMO, and the good news is you don't have to settle for it.

u/trainedtech88 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

this ASUS K501UW-AB78 would also be a great option. it has a decent lightweight built good battery life, nice specs such as a Powerful 6th-generation Intel Core i7 cpu, GTX 960M gpu, 8GB DDR4 ram and a 512GB SSD.

u/Computerrevs · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think this infographic could be really helpful for you in finding what you can get in each price range.

For specific suggestions, I bought the ASUS FX502vm this year for my freshman year of college. I play LOL and PUBG also and was worried about the aesthetics at college also. Its just a basic black laptop that you can turn the backlit keyboard off if you are really looking for a professional look. For gaming, this laptop runs very smoothly on both games and I haven't had any compaints about performance. It is a little over your price range. If you want a cheaper laptop that looks a little more like a gaming laptop, the Acer Helios 300 is a great choice but does have that "gamer" look you are trying to avoid.

u/antisouless · 3 pointsr/hardwareswap

Why did you buy a 965m 6 mos ago ?

I personally would rather have a better gpu than better memory as that can be upgraded.

I think people just don't know much about mobile GPUs sometimes. Here's a quick hierarchy or mobile GPUs right now.

  1. 1080
  2. 1070
  3. 980(mobile)/1060
  4. 980m
  5. 970m/1050

So it seems like the performance/storage specs are similar on the Gigabyte P55Wr7-KL3 than the Eluktronics P650HP6 for the same price except for the current $150 coupon.

Does anyone happen to know how they match up in heat management and build quality? After having overheating issues with my current laptop's GPU and CPU, these factors and customer service matters a lot to me.

If both of their customer service stories are bad then I might as well get the Acer Aspire VX 15 as even with less performance, the cooling and customer service should be good.

Chromebook Pro:

  • $499
  • beautiful, bright display
  • 3:2 screen ratio
  • stylus

    ASUS C302:

  • $429
  • 16:9 screen ratio
  • amazing keyboard
  • keyboard is also backlit

I own the Chromebook Pro and my son has the C302. They're both great, but I prefer the 3:2 amazing screen and the stylus of the Chromebook Pro to the amazing keyboard on the C302.

EDIT: emphasis on C302's keyboard, backlight, and Pro's display.

Hello, I am not a Chromebook user but I am very interested in them.

You can definitely go for any Chromebook around $500, they typically have 4gb ram, 32/64gb storage, and intel core m3 processor. If you are willing to pay few hundreds more, there's a discount on Amazon for Google Pixelbook, with i5 processor, 8gb ram and 128gb storage for $846. There's also one good thing about this device, you can install linux applications on it.

If you are not interested in paying that money for Google Pixelbook, you can go with ASUS C302CA-DHM4.

Enjoy it!!

Actually , the first version GPD Win was only $300 , it came with Quad Core Z8700 @ 2.0GHz + 4GB of Ram

I don't understand how could they charge double for the 2nd version , ulv i3 isn't the best CPU in the world . $400 for a low performance i3 + extra 4GB of Ram ??? Nah ! I pass

For $700 , you could buy a gaming ultrabook

For usual college stuff, this is good, and even plenty. If you're doing engineering, this will be quite suitable for doing CAD drawings too, just not to the level of an assembly that has tons of parts, as well as connections.

As for typing and browsing, this should do pretty well, and it should have a long battery life.

For gaming, I can't say much about the GPU. It's not a gaming GPU. It's gonna run CS:GO and most MOBAs fluently. Most games from 2012 and below should run smoothly at higher details as well. As for more current games, you can run them quite well at 720p and medium-low details.

As /u/juken7 said, you really need at least 960M if you want to game well.

This one should be more suited for gaming, but I won't bet much on it as it has a dual core CPU still. But, it strikes a decent balance between being frugal for daily use (That dual core is really good for daily typing tasks out of the mains), and having enough power for gaming (960M is quite decently fast)

u/whosdr · 3 pointsr/runescape

Budget? Country? Currency? How high do you want the settings?

If the budget stretches to $870 USD, and you want essentially ultra graphics, consider the following:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DT49XN8/

Quad-core processor, GPU equivalent to a desktop 750 ti (which does work at ultra detail), 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage (much faster than a regular HDD), 1080p monitor, good WiFi, etc.

u/AdityaRav · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Definitely the Dell inspiron i7559

Keep in mind that build quality is not exactly spectacular on this. It's made from non-quality plastic but has good reviews across the board.

If you want something with a bit better build quality and a bit lesser weight, you can take a look at Asus K501UW

u/Captain_Frylock · 3 pointsr/graphic_design

What's your budget? That will be a pretty big deciding factor in the type of computer you buy. Considering you like games, you'll probably be looking for a PC rather than a Mac (shouldn't be a detriment to your schooling, and will save you a lot of money).

ASUS makes some solid gaming laptops that I would recommend.

u/rplanters · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you look at my recent post history I've been searching for around the same thing and have found a few good computers so far, namely:

ASUS N550JK-DS71T

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition

Lenovo Y50 (59425944)

These will be perfect for everything, with a slight snag. I've learned that CAD and video-editing are very GPU intensive. Seeing as you'll likely have this for most of college a good GPU at purchase is going to go a long way in your computers ability to keep up with newer software, which kind of points you towards the Acer, which has the best GPU of the three. The only contention is that Acer has a pretty terrible reputation when it comes to computers, again I'm no expert so others can give you more info, but considering this is a main computer for you, you need reliability and Acer frequently fails to deliver on that.

u/EskimoNoise · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Take a look at the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71

The Asus Rog recommended below would be a very nice option. In case you really want to go below $1000 though, you could go for the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 which is also a great laptop and would do almost the same job as the one recommended below. Also, it will run those games you mentioned very well.

I got it specifically to make music, but quickly realized the laptop just didn't fit my lifestyle since I have a desktop that I prefer to make music on. u/GillicuttyMcAnus · 3 pointsr/photography

As other posters have pointed out, if you want good colour you're going to want an IPS display. You will be disappointed with a TN or VA display.

Anyways, from reading some of your replies to other posts: you're looking for something under $800 for travelling. Most laptops come with IPS displays standard, and you could totally find one within your budget. If a laptop doesnt have an IPS panel its either a super cheap pile of shit or a very expensive gaming rig.

A lot of "budget" laptops have less than FHD displays, but $800 puts you well within the mid range/upper-mid range so for most of the ones in your budget you'll get a 1920x1080 display. That said, a smaller 1920x1080 display will probably look better than a larger one (pixel density) If you wanted to stretch your budget just a little bit you could probably get yourself into a QHD display which would offer higher resolution, but on a 13in screen you're probably not going to be able to tell that big of a difference.

Asus 17in 8gb ram i7 5500 - $789

HP 15.6in 8gb i7 6700 - $660

Asus 13in 8gb - $680 It has a gimp processor compared the other two, but it has a solid state drive and comes in more of a MacBook Air form factor. This may not be the best workhorse but it would be a lot more travel friendly.

Asus Zenbook 13in 8gb i5 6200 - $799 This combines the best of both worlds. It has an actual CPU in it, solid state drive, and comes in a sexy well-designed package. It is at the upper end of your budget.

edit- if I were in your shoes and had $800 to drop on a laptop for travelling, I would seriously consider the Zenbook. It looks pretty decent from a specs standpoint, it is reasonably priced, comes in a nice form factor, and it has a nice screen.

But, please PLEASE don't just take my word for it. There are TONS of resources on the web for buying a laptop this sort of thing- youtube, google, forums, reviews. Go to bestbuy and play around with them. Don't just take my advice for it.

u/CloningTwoSheep · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

First, before anything Have you taken a look at the quick picks?

Things to note:

You have not really given much about what you're looking to use this laptop for. College laptop is a general term, it can range from running CAD to simple word and web browsing. I assume the Dell 15.6 touch screen is this model Please provide the exact model of the one you have considered as for the Dell Inspiron family has a lot of different models. Most 15.6 inch laptops will be around 4-6 pounds in weight. Touch screens will diminish the battery life of the device faster than one without. On a 15.6 inch laptop, it is preferred to have 1080p as anything less will look blurry.

Keep in mind a performance and battery life are opposites at <$500 price point. Better processing power will require more battery, thus decreasing the battery life.

Some suggestions:

This Asus F555LA-AB31 15.6 in comes with a i3-5010U(2.1ghz) proccessor, 4gb of ram, and a 500gb hard drive at $369.99 dollars. This battery life is around 4-5 hours. (Realistically 3-4 hours)

This HP W2M75UA#ABA 15.6 in offers a i5-6200u processor(2.3ghz), 8gb of ram and a 1tb hard drive/or 128gb ssd(same price) at $459.99 dollars This has a 7 hour 15min battery life. (Realistically 6 hours average).

u/_Einveru_ · 3 pointsr/linuxquestions

I've been using the Acer 14" Chromebook with Arch Linux/i3 installed.
The 1080p screen is great for watching videos. I've also run Plasma and
XFCE on it in the past. Using mostly terminal apps and Firefox I hardly
have any issues or noticeable slowdowns.

Probably won't run Windows {well} though, so there's that. Does get
close to your budget though.

u/chriscosta77 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I recently ordered about 20 Chromebooks for my school district. ASUS C201 11.6" units. Avoid that particular model. They are cheap, flimsy machines. Thank God we only need them for testing students.

As for compatibility, it's not too bad an OS. All general computing can be done on a Chromebook. You can also enable Android apps to run on them. There's even Word online, and other Office apps. The battery life is crazy though, 8-10 hours, even longer most of the time.

You don't need an external HDD, because most of them have SD card slots, or USB ports, so you can just buy her a nice 128GB USB flash drive and that'll hold all her schoolwork. I got one of those solid metal ones from Samsung, it'll last literally the rest of my life, lol.

I'm not sure what your budget is but here's some options for Chromebooks...

Ok, in case you wanted to just skip the Chromebooks entirely, and get her a Windows laptop, that will be more compatible

HP 14-an013nr 14-Inch Notebook (AMD E2, 4GB RAM, 32 GB Hard Drive) with Windows 10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F4ZG68A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_k3ZlybK0VQ0RS

Here's a decent Chromebook that's not too expensive.

Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C1DZ (15.6-Inch Full HD IPS, 4GB RAM, 16GB SSD) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TU7U4PU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i5ZlybVSGN4V3

And this one is one of the nicer models of Chromebook. But at this point you might as well just look into Windows machines.

Acer Chromebook 14, Aluminum, 14-inch Full HD, Intel Celeron Quad-Core N3160, 4GB LPDDR3, 32GB, Chrome, CB3-431-C5FM https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CVOLVPA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_o7ZlybAWRMMFZ

You can buy it new for 230 (which is a good deal)

I'd go with the Acer Chromebook 14: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Aluminum-Quad-Core-CB3-431-C5FM/dp/B01CVOLVPA/

Incredibly cheap for what you get, also great user reviews, so issues like a crappy wifi card are unlikely.

u/rafa10pj · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The display on MBAs is terrible, they really shouldn't be charging that kind of money for a non-FHD TN display in 2016.

You can get an i5, 8 GB, 256 SSD ASUS UX305UA for 749 on Amazon. It's got an IPS FHD display panel.

u/exasperated_dreams · 3 pointsr/laptops

How does this look https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BMERZJ6/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_4, for the price seems like a good deal. The cheapest comparable lenovo (display ssd etc) costs 980 with a 3 cell battery. The cheapest dell xps is 900 with half of the ssd size. Its really up to you, but to me that seems like the best deal for a portable machine atm. Also good luck in school!

u/MustBeOCD · 3 pointsr/Surface

I graduated HS a year ago (living in Silicon Valley). The computers that were being used were all these shitty pieces of shit that cost 250$ in 2012.

I can't think of any reason why any school would pay 1000 for a laptop vs 250 for a chromebook, especially given that these are going to be thrown around in schools.

Well the model that I had was one of the earliest Chromebooks available. A lot has changed since then and there are a lot of newer models with more advanced features. From what I do know about Chromebooks, I think they are best suited for people who don't mind using Google products exclusively. If you are OK with using Google Docs/Sheets/Slides for productivity, then you should be fine. Also, I wouldn't buy a Chromebook for gaming or video editing. If you are a programmer, a Chromebook could be useful, but only if you are using languages that can be compiled in the browser.

Here is a recent article that highlights the positives and negatives of Chromebooks. Best of luck.

Someone on here pointed me towards the Asus N550JK since I am in your budget range as well, it looks pretty sleek, nice build quality, it has a GTX 850m card which isn't the best but its still good enough to run current games also up to 16g of ram(optional either upgrading yourself or buying direct) i7 processor at 2.4GHz w/ 1080p resolution. One thing however that has been pointed out is that the HDD is pretty lame, but there is an option to get an SSD or replace the optical drive for an SDD.

You dont really need much, a laptop with an i5 processor and at least a 750m or 850m video card will do just fine. This should not cost you more than $1200, unless youre buying a mac. If you want a mac with a 750m in it, you have to shell out $2499.99 before tax.

Laptops i suggest for your purposes:

I was in a similar predicament several months ago. My budget was $2500, so I allocated $1500 to the desktop and $1000 to the laptop.

Desktop

Laptop

I was disappointed with my PS4 for gaming, and decided I wanted a computer that could outperform it. I also needed a laptop for school in the fall, so I thought it would be a great idea to go for a gaming laptop. For school, portability is a big factor when it comes selecting a laptop; something a gaming laptop does not have.

Long story short, I built a gaming PC and bought a laptop that fit my budget. I also bought Windows 8.1 Pro for Students so I can access my desktop from my laptop. Finally, I have plenty of space on OneDrive and Google Drive so I can share documents between computers on the go.

u/haag21 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I personally am majoring in CS also! I also would like a laptop that could handle light gaming but not a beast or heat-machine. I was trying to find that slim look with the good specs, and I ended up finding the Asus N550JK after about 3 weeks of constant searching. It will be coming in this Wednesday! Can't wait!

The only issue I saw with it is that it comes with a 1TB 5400 RPM HDD, which is a good size but far too slow. I ordered a samsung 500GB SSD and am going to swap it in as soon as I receive it!

Asus N550JK

Amazon Link

Samsung SSD

Also I purchased a bay ($10) to replace the DVD drive and now I can put in another hard drive bay, which I plan on sticking that 5400 RPM HDD in there until I save up some money for another SSD

Heres some specs on it

cpu runs at 2.4GHz-3.4GHz

Glossy Touch Screen

15.6" screen

Win 8.1

If you're not gaming on it, you should get around 5 hours on time on it (Big one for me!)

Not hot!! (Also a big one for me!)

Not noisy, even while running games and pushing the laptops limits

1080p

Audio is said to not be too great, but it comes with a little speaker which vastly improves the quality and plugs right into the laptop

Remember you can always buy the laptop now, and save money for a SSD and things later!

I also am putting another 8GB stick of ram into it (totaling 16gb)

Any questions, feel free to ask, I will be LOADED with info come the 30th when mine arrives. Can't wait!

Edit: Only issue is the laptop is about $100 out of your range, so if you would like to pull a tiny bit more cash out, it looks to be very promising!

You could try the asus g550jk or the n550jk. They both have good cpus, quad core i7s, the new maxwell 850m with ddr3 which can run newer games on low to medium settings at 1080p and they have really solid build qualities.

The g550jk is more oriented to gaming with an overclocked gpu and a matte screen, but is slightly more expensive because of the ROG namebrand.

The n550jk is more for multimedia, comes with a good quality glossy touchscreen and it should fit right in your budget.

Honestly, I also reccomend an Asus N550JK. You wont notice a difference in the GPU's playing Warlord of Draenor, but the N550 has an IPS touchscreen display that is on a different level than the TN screens in the others.

I'd consider taking the hit on the laptop. A $200 difference between gaming laptops is usually a difference of less than 5-10 FPS (980M vs 960/970M), if any at all (you can sacrifice in other areas; i.e. you don't need higher than 1080p for laptop gaming since mobile GPUs can't really handle it well enough to make it worth it; you don't need more than 8GB RAM unless you're a heavy video editor; etc). Whereas $200 more for the SP3 buys you way more productivity than a Note.

Edit: I noticed you were looking at the UX303LN. That's a $1300 machine with a 3000x1800 resolution. Why would you need that resolution? 95% of the things you'll be looking at (including games and movies) will be at 1080p. I don't think it's worth $300 for that resolution. You can get a 1080p gaming laptop with a bigger screen (and better GPU) for a lot less! Then you can buy the SP3!

If your scholarship has to be directly allocated to buy a computer, 1000 is more than enough.
RAM isn't the biggest factor in running programs like Solidworks and AutoCad, it's your graphics card. I'm was a regular poster on /r/SuggestALaptop (you should go here if you have any further questions). These laptops are 15.6 inch and relatively bulky, because portable laptops sacrifice performance for light weight and battery life. I assume you're willing to trade performance for those things.

First, decide if you need a laptop or desktop. The desktop will have better performance, but the laptop will be more portable. You stated that you want a laptop.

Acer Aspire V15
This would be a great buy. It has a Mid-High range GPU, 1TB hard drive to store all your files. If you want you could buy a laptop with an SSD but I would argue it isn't worth it since you're on a budget.

Asus N550JK
This laptop has a touchscreen, and has the best quality display out of all 3 laptops. If you have to do color specific work, this is the laptop to get. It also has a touchscreen, but the weakest GPU out of all 3.

Lenovo Y50
This last laptop is one of the most popular gaming laptops on the market, mainly due to the branding, backlit keyboard, etc. Many people complain about the display on this laptop, but it has a good price to performance ratio. The processor on this one is weaker than the other 2. There is a model with a stronger processor but it's over your budget.

Usually I would recommend the Lenovo Y50, but that's a great deal on the Acer. I would recommend that one personally because of the discount right now. With regards to the previous poster, my older brother is an ME, he does a lot of Solidworks/AutoCAD stuff and he often talks about how his laptop is convenient for him to work on, so if you feel a laptop would be really beneficial then I would buy one.

If you have any more questions you can message me or visit /r/suggestalaptop .

u/JohnSheir · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Not better or worse than the top brands. Asus motherboards are great. I'd say Asus laptops with aluminum bodies are more reliable than the cheaper plastic ones.

All of the hard drives that come with these laptops are 5400 rpm and are outdated compared to the other specs. If I bought any of these I'd switch to SSD asap. HDD brands aren't advertised like video cards and cpus as components so they are often the cheapest possible solution.

I tend to focus more on the individual reviews for the laptop rather than the brand.

ASUS N550JK-DS71T

$899, same price, gtx 850 (way better card), aluminum body, touch screen, and otherwise same specs as the one you posted. Another example of how much that gimmicky flip ability costs. Although for this one a majority of the 1 star reviews are about the same thing: the screen. So, that is something I would consider more than the brand.

Of course you aren't! The North Koreans are the supposed communists...even though it's really just a ham-fisted autocracy. But let's avoid politics, shall we? :)

The ASUS N550JK is always popular around here. It's a good value, with a powerful i7 processor, a discrete graphics card, Full HD IPS screen, 8 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB hard drive for under $1k. Since you like SSDs, you may prefer the $1200 version with 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD.

Please note that the discrete GTX 850M graphics card is good, but you won't be running next year's (or even this year's) most graphics-intensive games on max settings. If you're okay with that, this is probably the best value. A similar, but slightly more powerful, option is the ASUS ROG GL551JM.

I'd honestly get the cheaper version of the N550JK, get an SSD like the Crucial MX100 256 GB, clone the factory hard drive to the SSD, and install the SSD myself. The machine would be just as fast, and would be only $1030 including the SSD--and I'd have the 1 TB hard drive to use as a backup!

If you choose the DIY route, here's a good guide on how to clone your hard drive to an SSD: http://blog.laptopmag.com/ssd-upgrade-tutorial

Hope that was helpful!

u/mikarm · 2 pointsr/Guildwars2

I have this laptop, I'm going to sleep soon but I'll start the install for guild wars 2 on it and tell you what performance I get. I'll try low, auto, highest settings and tell you how it feels and what fps I get. It's more powerful than the one you linked but it should give you an idea about what you may have to spend to get playable performance.

Edit: Okay so I didn't do any crazy testing, just walked around the world and killed a few mobs and then went to divinitys reach for the most part. I'm playing with the touch pad so it is a little awkward(make sure you have a usb mouse), also I capped my fps at 60 but did NOT turn on vsync and this was at 1920x1080 resolution.

Low settings are ugly and not worth it, just to get that out of the way. The water is just sad looking. If you want to save money and buy a lower priced laptop and play on low settings it is possible, just get one with a good processor. If you can get one with one of the newer IRIS intel HD graphics those actually do really well for gaming, do some research and see which one would be best for you. Could also go with a dedicated card like I have.

Auto detect put me at 60 fps most of the time running around in divinitys reach with dips down to ~50. Very playable and it felt great. I got to test this one the most because the Shadow Behemoth event was going on. There were a lot of people out there and I saw as low as 35 fps but for the most part I was at 45+ during the whole event which is very good imo. This screenshot shows what auto detect put me at, that was 60 fps where I was. Here is a picture of the event that shows some of the people there, I think I was at 40 fps there.

I turned on best appearance which put most things to high(not highest, but close) and I did awesome in divinitys reach, 40-60 fps with it usually right around the middle of that. However I can definitely see this suffering in a dungeon or event like the one I did on the auto settings. Here are the settings it put me at. As you can see in the same swamp I just killed the Shadow Behemoth in with nobody but 1 or 2 people around I'm sitting at 48 fps.

Overall I am very happy with the performance of this laptop on the auto settings and it could be even better if tweaked a bit. This thing will play Guild Wars 2 just fine but is also 3x the price of the laptop you linked. In WvW or anything massive you will get fps drops but I can't really say how bad they will be.

u/thecolonelofk · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I'm just going to go ahead and link you to r/SuggestALaptop for a better equipped suggestion, but I can give it a shot. That budget might be a little rough.

Autocad is generally single threaded, with some actions requiring more, so you'll be fine with a laptop i5/i7 (dual core without, and with hyperthreading), and won't require a HQ SKU CPU (4 actual cores). RAM is going to be a big consideration, since it's fairly easy to fill up. Autodesk recommends 8, which should be alright, but up to 16 is going to be better. The GPU is definitely worth having, but it doesn't need to be incredible. Something like a GT940M or higher is absolutely fine.

Budget option - $510

13-inch option - $1099

Premium option - $1299

This is probably the cheapest laptop, its not really a gaming laptop tho, but some people consider it as a gaming laptop, but it can handle minecraft tho, since it has an i5-6200U, and minecraft is a CPU bound game, also the laptop has a GT 940M, but It cant handle modern games, can watch this video for the review

but If she can spend $1000 on a laptop
I recommend the this asus laptop or this acer laptop
both are almost the same, but the asus has 16gbs of ram, the acer also has a 16gb ram option, but the price will rise up to $1300, so probably you should get the asus, and add $100 or $200 more on the asus and you will get a 128GB ssd and 4GBs of Vram

u/HingleMcCringle_ · 2 pointsr/battlestations
u/Fishycrackers · 2 pointsr/techsupport

I would recommend the terabyte HDD. If you're only using it for light gaming, the drop in speed by using a HDD would not really be an issue, unless the games you play are very large with high graphics requirements. Even then, the computer would probably be limited by your GPU rather than memory access speed, and from what I can tell, this laptop does not have a gaming GPU such as a 960m from nvidia. Also, for schoolwork, the extra space could come in handy and the diffference in about 800GB of storage between the 2 options is huge.

For reference purposes, I have this laptop: http://www.amazon.com/GL552VW-DH71-15-Inch-Discrete-GeForce-Metallic/dp/B01578ZKPO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

It has a 960m nvidia graphics processor and a 1TB HDD with 16GB RAM. I can run games like League of Legends on high graphics, and games such as Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 on medium to medium-high graphics without any fps issues. Again, I think for gaming purposes, the GPU is what is most important, but in terms of schoolwork, an SSD would make daily things like saving or video processing a bit quicker. In fact, honestly speaking, schoolwork can be done with any computer really, it is the hardware requirements for gaming that would take the most money to support.

I believe this laptop will suit most of your needs:

ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 15-Inch Gaming Laptop, Discrete GPU GeForce GTX 960M 2GB VRAM, 16GB DDR4, 1TB ($999.00)

I chose it because it has powerful, up-to-date internals and is not as heavy as other laptops in the same range. The option I linked does not come with an aditional SSD though. You should also consider that the inclusion of an optical drive will mean the laptop will be less portable due to the added mass.

The quad-core CPU paired with the discrete GPU will run all the apps you require with ease.

Hope this works for you.

For gaming laptops, be prepared to go BIG on your budget to get performance. That laptop would probably suffice, but the Asus ROG that I linked would give you better bang, probably constant 60 FPS. The ASUS N550JK sounds like a great option for you. It has superb build quality, a great looking touchscreen IPS dsiplay, and a pretty decent battery life (around 3-5 hours). Nevertheless this laptop has a great build-quality, great processing power, a great look, and you can even swap out the DVD drive for a hard-drive if you want (there are even tutorials on how to do this on youtube). But in the end there are other laptops that can also accomplish your needs that are cheaper. But for the price and what you are getting with this laptop, I consider it to be a pretty good deal.

u/theoruss · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think your best option is a chromebook and installing linux on it if you dont want to carry around one of those ugly refurb thinkpads people like recommending.

Acer Chromebook 14, Aluminum, 14-inch Full HD, Intel Celeron Quad-Core N3160, 4GB LPDDR3, 32GB,

This thing is rated in the top 5 chromebooks to install/run linux on, tested, literally has the same design as the Macbook Air (hilarious) and will have anywhere from 8-10 hours of battery life on a single charge.

Installing Linux on these things is pretty easy too.

If you want to stick under your budget and want something smaller the Samsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US 4 GB RAM 16GB SSD 11.6" Laptop is a good alternative at only $179 (also has been tested to run Linux)

u/Zombie-Feynman · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think this might be about the closest to what you're looking for. It tips your scale a bit at 4.4 lbs, but it's probably the lightest laptop in your price range that'll play Overwatch on high. Plenty of battery life, and cheap enough that you'll have a bit of $ left over to upgrade the ram as much as you want. Do note that it's a dual core i7.

u/SeafoodDuder · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Hi Ryuk :)

I did some searching and found this at the top of your budget. Seems to meet most of your requirements. I also believe you can upgrade the RAM. 8 GB seems like it could be a bit low for what you're doing?

Have you thought of a small, Mini-ITX sized PC build with a separate monitor? A lot of the much smaller cases are easier to bring along. :)

If you're in the market for a new laptop, /r/suggestalaptop is a great place to ask for help. You can also take a look at the Quick Picks to see if one of those fits your needs.

Seeing as you linked a laptop for $900, here is a much better laptop for roughly the same price, with a GTX 960M, 512GB SSD, 1080p 15 inch screen, it will completely destroy Mass Effect 3 and run it on ultra at 60fps easily.

If you want something cheaper or better, I suggest filling out a form and posting, the /r/suggestalaptop guys are very helpful. Best of luck finding a laptop!

16G ram DDR4, i7(6th) 6700HQ, SSD, for $1200. You did not mention a price range. I have the old version that I got about 6 months ago with an AMD graphics so this will be even better. I have no problems running EU4 as well as some of the recent TWs. The drawbacks would be smaller battery life compared to other laptops and it runs a bit hot sometimes.

What's your budget like?

As for specs, the main thing you need to watch out for is the graphics card, which the minimum requirement for Stormblood is gtx 750. To explain this number, 7 is the generation and 50 is the level of power. And higher generations means more power, so a 1060 would be more powerful than a 960, for example.

Looking at budget laptops (like this one), it seems the 960m is fairly popular among them. The 'm' means it's a lesser version for laptops, and it turns out 960m is right on par with the 750, so you meet minimum requirements for Stormblood, barely.

Personally, if I were going for the "best bang for your buck" I really like this one, all really nice specs. 1060 is a solid card for FFXIV, especially when paired with G-Sync (complicated tech, but it makes your frames per second nice and smooth without vertical tearing). The SSD means short load times, that CPU is fantastic for laptops, so no concern there. If you're willing to spend more to make it more "Future Proof", the 1070 option isn't bad either.

So yeah, depends on your budget. Hopefully I explained what you need to look for well enough.

u/Uzonna · 2 pointsr/laptops

With that out of the way, this is a laptop that will even play the Witcher 3 at medium, along with other games on high as long as they're not too intensive, like rocket league and skyrim (Assuming you're talking about the 2011 version, since I don't know about the 2016 HD Remaster)

You have a pretty wide gulf in your budget, I can make suggestions around the $1500 range but you are pretty much jumping straight from $1000 to $1500. Being a dollar-for-perfomance kind of guy, I would stick to the $1000 end of the scale. 5.5 pounds, full power i7 HQ series/16GB of DDR4 for audio/video work, and a GTX960M for games. For Battlefield 1 (based on Battlefield 4 performance) I would expect you to be getting 30+ FPS minimum at medium kind of settings.

The aesthetics are pretty much subjective, but given you were already looking at a ROG model I'm guessing you're ok with it. Definitely one of the more restrained gaming laptops, unlike Razer with that ridiculous logo that never truly turns off despite what the settings say.

On that note, forget the Stealth and forget the whole eGPU option. It's just not there, you're getting a gimped processor and having to spend WAY more for WAY less in the specs department.

I was unable to find a core i5 model in the price range you offered for either MSI or Alienware, however this Asus ROG laptop meets all the requirements your friend has, but also has a Core i7-6700HQ.
The Nvidia 960M should be plenty enough for those games at 1080p + 60 FPS: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01578ZKPO/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1479200856&sr=1-8

I would say something like a Asus UX305 would work well:
https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX305UA-13-3-Inch-Generation-Titanium/dp/B01BMERZJ6/ref=sr_1_1/167-5742196-5543305?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1474650036&sr=1-1&keywords=ux305

I purchased this laptop for my girlfriend 4 months ago and have been impressed by it so far.

What screen size are you looking for in a laptop?

u/SentientMustache · 2 pointsr/Ubuntu

I recently purchased an ASUS Zenbook UX305CA (Full-HD version) and run Ubuntu MATE on it. Ubuntu runs well and the battery life is excellent (estimated 10 hours, but haven't clocked it). The trackpad didn't work during installation, but worked fine when I rebooted after installation. It's not a particularly powerful machine, but I don't require much power from my laptop. I browse the web, edit documents, watch videos, or ssh into remote machines.

It meets all of your listed requirement, but as I don't know your workflow I have no way of knowing if it's powerful enough for you. There's another version with an i5. It's more powerful, but isn't passively cooled and I don't know how much less battery life it has.

u/Flantastical · 2 pointsr/laptops

If you care about gaming, the Dell Inspirion 15 inch gaming laptop would be a good match. Downside is it's on the heavier side at 5.6 pounds.

If you want something lighter, easier to carry around, and with a more sleek look, the [Asus Zenbook 305UA](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BMERZJ6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01BMERZJ6&linkCode=as2&tag=recom01-20&linkId=2484f37461127ac065efeb24a1af4468
) would be perfect. It has a smaller screen at only 13.3 inches, but it's a great all-around college laptop with a very long battery life, good trackpad, fair keyboard, and a good screen, all wrapped up in a laptop with good build quality.

You would still be able to play light and moderate games on the Zenbook 305UA, but expect to keep graphics on low. It could handle things like CSGO or League of Legends just fine, but don't expect heavy games like GTA V. I would greatly recommend the Zenbook.

u/wowdavers · 2 pointsr/laptops

This is stupid. Any half respected engineering program will have school computer lab facilities to use and remote into when in person access isn't possible. This is speaking from experience. Ask about that before you buy a machine.

Being said, I have no idea why they suggested the recommendations they did - they're pretty standard specs for laptops now, but you they look stupid af considering they aren't tailored to running simulations or CAD programs well. Anything else, like writing lab reports or papers can be done on something weak af, like a tablet.

Definitely contact the people at your school. If they're set on a laptop that meets requirements, consider an ultrabook like the Asus Zenbook UX305UA, or something like the Dell Inspiron i7559, which packs a punch for a fairly low price point.

u/TacticalBastard · 2 pointsr/laptops

I wouldnt get a Macbook Air. They're horribly underpowered, throttle a ton, screen is crap, and not worth the money.

This is a much better alterative.

u/Tallinar · 2 pointsr/laptops

Dell XPS 13 is a great choice, as others have noted. If you want to keep budget lower, you might also look at the Asus Zenbooks, namely the following models:

UX305UA - Core i5-6200U, no touchscreen though. Should handle Overwatch on low settings OK. On Amazon right now for $750 if you like the color (I can't find the other colors anywhere).

https://www.amazon.com/Asus-UX305UA-AS51-13-3-Inch-Generation-Titanium/dp/B01BMERZJ6

UX305CA - Core m3 6Y30 processor. QHD model has touchscreen. Core m processor allows it to be fanless. Should be great for school and work purposes. By accounts I have read, it will play Overwatch on low settings, but with poor framerates (mid-teens) when screen gets very busy. Arguably playable. Would handle older titles like Starcraft 2, LoL on low settings. QHD/touch model on Amazon right now for $700.

https://www.amazon.com/UX305-13-Inch-Laptop-PREVIOUS-MODEL/dp/B014VHWFKA

UX360CA - Also Core m3 6Y30 processor like the model above, with touchscreen, FHD, and flip hinges. This is a new model that was just released. 512 GB SSD model on Amazon right now for $799. Microsoft Store has 256 GB model for $749.

https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX360CA-13-3-inch-Touchscreen-Windows/dp/B01GHQOD8U/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1468029537&sr=1-1&keywords=ux360ca

https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/ASUS-ZenBook-Flip-UX360CA-UBM1T-Signature-Edition-2-in-1-PC/productID.3389258300

Main caveat is that none of these have backlit keyboards, and are slightly larger than Dell XPS 13. They are much better-priced though, IMO.

Good luck!

Holla!

I am looking for a gift for my girlfriend. She is just starting out and her biggest bottle neck is a crappy laptop. She has a canon rebel t5 I think so that should be plenty. Her complaint lately is how her edited images colors are way off when she looks on her phone or a print when using her laptop. With this, I see there is monitor color calibrators so I was looking at this: X-Rite CMUNDIS

She is planning on getting a new laptop with her own money and I think the calibrator would be useful for any screen. I also thought about getting a external monitor. Once again she is not professional so I thought something IPS maybe ultrawide? LG UM57 25UM57

And also for a laptop she was asking what she should get so I looked for something portable/sleek, 1080p, ssd, and i5 + and came up with Zenbook-UX305UA

Basically are these good options for someone starting out doing as a side job?

Thanks!

Not OP but also highly interested in a laptop like this as well. Personally, I'm looking for a smaller screen (around 13in, 1080p), Type-C a bonus, no 2-1//folding. I've seen this on Amazon, but I would like a back-lit keyboard.

I've also found this just now so I think I managed to answer my own question. Ha. If only it were black.

Would not recommend laptops. Building a desktop is cheaper but if you really want a laptop that plays PM look into an i5.

This is the cheapest one I could find and I know for a fact it can play PM at fullspeed because I have the same i5 in my laptop.

EDIT: One thing to note when getting a laptop like this is that it comes with a 5400rpm HDD, which will be slower than desktop HDDs youre used too. Best bet is to replace it with a 7200rpm HDD or just get a SDD. (I'd go with SDD because you'll notice a huge increase in speed)

That would sort of OK. I played l4d2 and CS:GO on my old Intel HD 4000 laptop and they ran fine at around 40-50 FPS at 1366x768. Skylake integrated graphics should preform similarly or slightly better.

Any new laptop can play Minecraft, even cheap low end ones. If money is an issue, something like this could easily play minecraft: Amazon Link. If they want to go with something better: Amazon Link 2 or Amazon Link 3. However, neither of these are gaming laptops. If all he's playing is minecraft, by the time he moves on to more graphically intense games, his laptop (gaming or otherwise) will probably be outdated anyways. But here is a good entry level gaming laptop: Amazon Link 4

I am using a older version of this and it has been running great. I really like using the number pad on it.

Check here if your university offers Home use program . You can get MS office for 10$.

If you want a real cheap laptop then i have seen people use this but the processor is a bit old.

Even cheaper, You can pretty much pick up any sub $250 PC and wont find much difference for Excel use.

That's a good deal considering it's an i7. Here was my recommendation for a another thread at the 500 price range.

http://www.amazon.com/HP-15-ay011nr-Full-HD-Generation-Windows/dp/B01CGGOZOM/?tag=tdrvr-20

i5, 8gb rams, win 10, 1920x1080 resolution compared to the 1366x768 on yours. I suspect games run well because you are running on low resolution. I do like the i7 though.

OP's laptop is a good choice 256 gb ssd is good for work. But gpu needs to set lower screen resolution under 1080p to play the division. It also has a backlit keyboard which neither the PCs we recommend have.

u/TFresh2016 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Less than 500 dollars, powerful processor, webcam, 7 hour battery life, less than 5 pounds, CD drive, and a large hard drive. Seems like a solid candidate.

u/haloelites7 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

here are the highest system specs listed for both games

Processor: 1.8 GHz Quad Core CPU
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: 512 MB ATI 4800 series or better, 512 MB nVidia 9800 series or better

Now these are recommended and not required. I know that an integrated graphics card can run Civ 5 (which is the more intensive game), as I have friends that play Civ 5 on just a regular laptop.

Overall you may not even need a good gaming laptop for those games, especially if you run Civ 5 using Direct X 9 instead of 10 or 11.

TL;DR: Something similar to this (though by all means do your own research with the required specs of the game) should work. https://www.amazon.com/HP-Notebook-15-ay011nr-15-6-Inch-Processor/dp/B01CGGOZOM/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1473553696&sr=1-2&keywords=laptop&refinements=p_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A7817223011%2Cp_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289793011

u/Swazzleman · 2 pointsr/Twitch

Okay so after some research, that laptop seems to have some problems... Everywhere i've looked it has 2-3 stars. Here are some good laptops for the price, and to be completely honest, the clock speed of the CPU does not matter much for what you're going to be doing with it.

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-57D4

Display: 1920x1080

CPU: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

RAM: 8 GB

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB

HP 17.3" HD Premium High Performance Laptop

Display: 1600x900

CPU: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

RAM: 8 GB DDR4 SDRAM 1600MHz

GPU: Intel Integrated Graphics

HP Notebook 15-ay011nr 15.6-Inch Laptop

Display: 1920x1080

CPU: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

RAM: 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM

GPU: Intel Integrated Graphics

I would choose between these 3. The integrated graphics doesn't really matter if you aren't going to be encoding with the GPU so don't let that put you down. I would personally go with the first choice just because it's a well rounded laptop. 2.5GHz with a 940MX. But it's entirely your choice! :) Hope this helps!

u/Jackoosh · 2 pointsr/me_irl

It's true you can't find one twice as powerful at that pricepoint, but you could still find an equivalent laptop for around $400. This one has a better CPU, the same amount of RAM (though it's DDR3L, and while Apple doesn't actually specify on their website what kind of RAM they have I'm assuming they're on DDR4 at this point. Either way RAM speed isn't that important for the kind of work you're doing on a laptop), the same Intel HD Graphics and a tradeoff in terms of storage (1TB HDD vs 512GB SSD) over the lowest end (and cheapest) Macbook Air. And you get 3 USB ports (one of which is 3.0) as well as a DVD drive, neither of which are even offered on Macs.

That was after about 2 minutes of searching too; imagine how much better you can do with the same amount of money you'd spend on a macbook and more time.

This baby

My take on HP: I personally like Dell, Asus and MSI because I'm a budget laptop gamer (3 things that don't go well together). The reason I don't like them is because they make gaming laptops with horrible architecture. They'll place the GPU and CPU an inch apart which can lead to temperatures of upto 70° C while gaming and can reduce the life of your laptop.

The thing is that if it's not a gaming laptop they're pretty much the best company out there, their laptops are thin, light, feel very premium and look amazing with good performance. Since you'll be going to conferences and meeting I recomend this sexy beast.

It has a 13" matte screen, this means reduced glare in brightly lit environments.

It has a fast processor, 2 GHz, and is fanless so it's completely silent.

8 gigs of RAM should help with your Photoshop and will overall allow it to handle many processes at once without lag.

A 256 GB upgrade SSD means it's as thin as paper and just as light, plus it'll boot up in a millisecond and will launch applications like a 16 year old with premature ejaculation having sex for the first time.

The other recommendation is this.

It's more powerful with a Terabyte HDD and an a Skylake Intel i5 processor but it's also heavier and isn't fully silent like the zenbook.

It's beautiful but not as hot, it still looks very good though.

It's not as thin.

It's screen is larger.

It also has 8 GB of RAM.

SUM UP

The first one is lighter, cooler, silent and better looking.

The second one is more powerful and can store 3½ times more.

The first one boots up faster.

The second one has a larger screen.

Pick your poison. (Am I using the idiom correctly? Pls tell 😞)

Edit: Note that they are both very light, though the zenbook (the first one) is as light if not lighter than a Mac air.

Edit: Note that they're both quite powerful, considering they're HP and their weight, price etc. and you won't actually feel a power difference when using then so the main variables you need to choose between are:

  • Weight
  • Looks
  • Storage
  • Screen size

Instead of leasing, get a credit card with either a low/zero interest intro purchase rate or low/zero interest balance transfer rate for a year and put the $2500-$5000 on that. If you can't pay that off in a year, your business likely has bigger issues. Even at normal credit card rates, if you you could pay it off in a month or two, you would come out way ahead vs any leasing arrangement you can find.

I wouldn't buy one right now, I'd go with the Acer Chromebook 14

u/DrunkBotanist · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Nah, skip that one. A lot of bad reviews. Unless you find a good deal on one used, you're not going to get a good regular laptop at that price. You'll end up just as frustrated as you are with your current laptop. You're much, much better off going with a Chromebook if you don't want to spend more than $300.

At that price point, this is a much better option. It only has a 16 GB hard drive, but it's an SSD (solid state drive), which is much faster. You'll also have access to plentiful cloud storage with Chromebook, more than enough to host anything you'd need for school. This Acer is also a good option, and has more internal storage.

I have the Acer Chromebook, and I absolutely love it. Here are some pros and cons:

PROS:

  • 12 hour battery life

  • 1920x1080 Screen

  • 32gb storage

  • x86 processor so you can use apps in Ubuntu (Crouton)

  • Android apps are coming soon, already in the stable channel, just needs to be signed off by all parties for release.

  • GREAT SPEAKERS.

  • Decent touchpad.

  • 12 tabs open, no lag.

  • 100% Aluminum chassis. (Super Sturdy)

  • No fans, so no noise.

    CONS:

  • USB ports, and HDMI port are really close together so it's a hassle if you're trying to use all 3 ports.

  • 32GB SSD is not replaceable, so you're stuck with it. (You can buy a flash drive for more storage. USB 3.0 recommended.)

  • Dumb stickers under the keyboard that irritate your wrists, so you have to remove them.

  • No SD card slot. (Ridiculous.)

It's an amazing laptop if you know the limitations of ChromeOS, and are willing to learn how to use Crouton. This Chromebook can handle emulators up until PS1, that's when it begins to lag slightly.

P.S. Don't buy from that website, you can find both of those cheaper on Amazon

Boom: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-Aluminum-Quad-Core-CB3-431-C5FM/dp/B01CVOLVPA

$300 bucks. Now, point to a metric of usability for a college student that warrants the other thousand dollars.

On the topic of build quality: I have a plastic chromebook made in 2013, and the build quality is still top notch. I've kept this thing in just about every environment, and it's excelled in all of them, the only wear being on the top with some minor scratches, and some of the stickers I put on it are worn.

I hate it when people try to say that chromebooks are disposable, because they aren't. They're tough laptops, meant to withstand the rigors of an educational setting. Students, especially young ones, don't treat technology well, and chromebooks take this in stride. Plus, they don't look half bad, even the plastic ones. Far better than most Windows machines. Replaceable? Sure, but not disposable.

I did ditch my windows laptop for my chromebook, and I've never looked back. I only keep my desktop around for gaming, and will usually do everything else on my chromebook.

u/Spectator09 · 2 pointsr/chromeos

Amazon is way cheaper. Same laptop is $288 vs $460 on newegg.

I would definitely recommend:

Acer Chromebook 14, Aluminum, Full HD

Personally own it, very nice laptop...

u/jklemon17 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'd go with [this one] (https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z). It's a good value for a reasonably light 15" laptop with fast processor and enough ram and storage for typical use. Keyboard is good, build quality isn't business-class, but it should last you through school.

u/default8080 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

For Windows an i5/8gb with an SSD is going to give you the best basic performance for the price. It's the base standard imo. Although the SSD can be swapped for an HDD which may save you some money.

And a decent little Dell.

For buying new, I would go with Dell as they have good support should something happen.

If you are returning it, have a look at this laptop it is also 400 dollar. It is a bit short on storage, but if you are just planning to use it for content cunsuming, word and work mostly in the cloud it should do the job.

The closest you'd get to a GTX 1060 would be the Dell i7577 (~$979 USD). It has been recommended a lot.
Dell i7577: i5-7300 HQ, 8GB, 128SSD + 1TB HDD

Another laptop more suitable for your price range would be the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 with a GTX 1050 at $~700 USD with similar specs.
Dell Inspiron 1050

Hope this helps.

u/Pokestein- · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I'm personally a fan of Dell, so I would recommend you this one, but I am no expert by any means.

Here are the specs:
> Intel Core i5-7300HQ Processor

>8GB 2400MHz DDR4 up to [32GB]

>GTX 1060 6GB Graphics

>128 GB (SSD) Boot + 1 TB 5400RPM SATA (HDD)

Its a 15.6 inch laptop, so I would say it is still portable.

E: Forgot to add, it's 900 USD, so you could use the extra $100 to either add another 8GB stick of RAM or save a little bit more and swap the HDD with a 500GB SSD.

u/cashcarti- · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

How would this do?

u/LedgeEndDairy · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Unfortunately the Acer Helios 300 was on sale for $1000 just yesterday afternoon, but has gone back up ("Cyber Monday") to just under $1,200.

Not sure what the tax would be like to import, but it's still a great deal. It does run a little hot, so I hear, though.

For about $60 cheaper, you can get the Dell G5587. 1050 Ti vs. 1060, half the SSD space but 1 TB HDD (You can add more space to the Helios as well), same RAM, and you lose the 144 Hz refresh rate.

The Helios is ~2.5kg to the Dell's ~2.85kg as well. Not a huge difference either way, but the Helios is lighter. If you're looking for ~$1,000 after import fees, you're gonna be hard-pressed to find a laptop with your specifications. Just the 1050Ti 'spec' alone ends up being over $1000 on most anything I found.

Actually the Dell Inspiron i7577 might match most of what you want. Great cooling system, only $900, GTX 1060 GC, 128 SSD (I believe this is easily upgradeable), 1TB HDD, and i5 processor. Only 8 GB RAM (again, pretty sure it's easily upgradeable) and it's not the i7 you wanted, but otherwise a really good deal as well. I nearly purchased this one. Same weight as the other Dell.

u/PumkinSpiceTrukNuts · 2 pointsr/WindowsMR

If gaming's not a priority then you can look at their xps and inspiron 7000 2-in-1s, I've no idea about their pros and cons though. Lenovo and hp will have good, sleek machines around this price point too.

Lastly, don't spend 1000 bucks on a used machine.

I HATE to recommend a prebuilt but with RAM / GPU at insane prices I'd have to say this PC which received a LOT of upvotes in /r/buildapcsales :

HP Pavilion Power 580-023w Gaming Tower, Intel Core i5-7400, NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB Graphics, 8 GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive, Windows 10 for $700 new.

With a 1060 should handle anything 1080p at mid to max settings with ease.

Here is the original discussion in BuildApcSales when it was a refurb

u/lanaudiere · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

No, because for $200 less (at Amazon) you can buy a prebuilt with the same processor but an RX 580 instead of a 1050 Ti. For $150 you can upgrade the RAM to 16GB and grab a 120GB SSD to add if you wish. However I still would recommend building your own- watch some YouTube tutorials and such, it's really quite easy even for a first-time builder.

u/ZoroUzumaki · 2 pointsr/suggestapc

If you're willing to spend $50 more, this is a good option.

This will give you similar performance, but has 8gb ram (will still be enough for gaming) and lacks an SSD (which is very nice to have)

This is also a solid machine for 1080p gaming.

the 1st and 3rd prebuilt are the best value.

u/DarkWolfen21 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Because I still believe in actually answering your question...

If you really must go pre-built, go with a Cyberpower PC. They usually go on sale at different stores. This isn't a bad deal when compared with other pre-built PCs (like Dells) not built for gaming, and have horrible space for upgrades. Windows is installed already, and you don't have to worry about a keyboard and mouse. You won't have to upgrade for a while. It's more than enough to get you started with gaming.

https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-GXIVR8020A5-Desktop-i5-8400-Processor/dp/B07B6H4GNY

*****

This tower is built as a gaming PC, so upgrades should NOT be a major pain, and you can learn to build a PC as you upgrade. I still suggest to do as much research, so you can understand how parts function.

u/BeanPads · 2 pointsr/gaming

None sorry. Compare the specs for those games and it might give you a better idea.

This is the PC I bought a few months back.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B6H4GNY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4g7SBbBWMN30Y
All I upgraded was ram (for non-gaming stuff), added SSD (huge improvement, totally worth money) and new PSU (cheap off-brand one it came with made me nervous).
You could read through reviews on that PC to get a ball park idea of what your build would be like.

Best of luck!

u/Reddituser703 · 2 pointsr/oculus

For $600 you'll have to build it.

So I found what you mentioned here: https://www.amazon.com/CYBERPOWERPC-GXIVR8020A5-Desktop-i5-8400-Processor/dp/B07B6H4GNY?th=1&psc=1

Originally it’s something like $700 with a RX 580 but with a different graphics card GeForce 2070 it’s close to $2000. Pretty steep price but I mean if it lasts a while it’s worth it no?

u/Skatehinge · 2 pointsr/AppleWatch

prebuilt, if I were more computer savvy that probably would’ve been cheaper but I got this CYBERPOWERPC. Graphics and cpu could use some upgrades, but from what I understand I can play most vr games smoothly. I’ll update this when i get it on Wednesday if interested.

u/Silver_Foxxx · 2 pointsr/computers

I am not personally a fan of Acer for laptops, and would shop around a bit for other brands. Try to find a laptop with thunderbolt, or at the least USB C charging. Then you can just carry 1 charger for your phone and your laptop. Otherwise the specs of the Acer I just linked are pretty good.

Honestly, you can still code and do pretty much anything to study computer science. I coded in Python, Java, and HTML on a dual core Core 2 Duo laptop and still got by just fine. I would reccomend an SSD though, it makes it so that when you click on a program it actually opens instantly as opposed to taking 30 seconds to open. You don't need an RTX graphics card or an i7, but I would recommend at least an i5 and some sort of graphics card, but an i3, Celeron, or Pentium will still do just fine. Intel HD Graphics should also be more than enough for any coding applications.

If you want any recommendations for things to buy at certain price points, here you go.

$300 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/

$500 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z/

$700 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire17-3-i5-7200U-802-11ac-Bluetooth/dp/B01N9YH4WE/

For a desktop, you can build anything that fits your budget, but build it with an SSD, an i5/Ryzen 5, and at least a 1050 ti if you want good performance and to be able to do anything you like software wise.
