Not overly. Gold is super malleable so it can be made hella thin.

Not hard to find or obtain either: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GOFXI8K

edit: far better deal

100 sheets of gold leaf measuring 1.7" by 1.7", totalling 289 square inches, cost $12.55, with free two-day shipping. I'm sure actual artists can get better deals on bulk quantities. Gold leaf isn't actually all that expensive since it's only like an atom thick.

You can get a 30 pack of 3 cm x 3 cm edible gold leaf for $10 is the cheapest I was able to find.

You can try two things.

1) Kintsugi

This is a fancy repair that uses gold in the seams of the broken pieces.

This was the best site I found with practical instructions, even though in the end she wasn't successful. I feel a big takeaway from this is, if it's a piece you really love, practice on some junk first. https://alidoesit.wordpress.com/2014/02/05/kintsugi-hacked/

If you want to keep the cup as a decorative object, you can use an epoxy like J.B. Weld. This will be easiest to work with, and allow you to fill in missing bit.

If you want to try to use the cup (assuming there's no leaks), you need to use 100% food-safe silicone. It's not going to work as well to try to fill in the gap. You could trace the broken edge with gold and leave a gap; or you could put another broken shard of ceramic there (from your practice pieces, right?).

Silicone is food safe once dried. Other epoxies (ie: J.B. Weld) or glues (ie: superglue) tend to fall into a nebulous "non toxic" category, fine for handles or saucers, etc, anything not in contact with food/drink. Unlike glue or epoxy, silicone won't stick to itself once cured, so you'll have to do any broken sections that intersect all in one go.

For the gold, you can use food safe gold leaf or powder; or food safe mica powder. Either way make sure it's labeled edible.
Here's what I picked up, even though I haven't used it yet:

Silicone: https://www.amazon.com/00688-Household-Waterproof-Adhesive-2-8-Ounce/dp/B000KE4PBQ/

Edible Gold Leaf: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Authentic-Chocolates-Decoration-Working/dp/B00JGSWW5S/

2) Repair and paint

If you want to keep it as a decorative piece, you could also repair it with J.B. Weld (including the missing bit), and paint the seams to match the rest of the glaze.

Cwyn's blog has a couple posts about this:

http://deathbytea.blogspot.fi/2014/11/chip-and-how-i-fixed-him-but-good.html

http://deathbytea.blogspot.fi/2016/02/ruyao-ru-kiln-repairs.html?m=1

Either way you'll want to use a bowl of rice to hold your cup as you glue it back together. It gives you a "third hand" to keep the parts steady while you work. You should put together the parts one at a time, let the silicone or epoxy cure, then do the next part. Here's a good instruction on that:

Good luck...

Gold leaf is cheap, because it's thin. 25 sheets for $6.75 on amazon.

edit: Apparently there is fake gold leaf. Sorry everyone. The real stuff is $38.50 for 25 sheets of 3.15 inches square. Amazon Link

u/ivovic · 10 pointsr/Damnthatsinteresting

Not much. There's barely any gold there. Small sheets like that are about $12 for 100

As with many such luxury items, it's all for show, and there's no real value in there.

Is my daughter your sister? Seriously. My daughter is 11, but everything you said is identical to her all the way down to the damn Guinea Pigs! I can give you some ideas from her Christmas list. Of course there's the gallon of glue for slime - clear, not the white. She specifically asked for this Slime accessory kit off Amazon.

At that age she is probably just getting into makeup so those kits such as this one are perfect for experimenting.

Wireless headphones are this year's big gift so I don't have to listen to her stupid Tik Tok videos.

She's been asking for her own electric toothbrush for about a year now so she's getting one.

She loves using tools to do her hair and all of my friends have talked about this tool and it has incredibly decent reviews (I have that on my own wish list, but I know my daughter would be jealous).

I got her a subscription to Muse magazine that's for kids 9-12 that are interested in science or crafts. Order it from their own site if you want an extra issue to actually give her at Christmas.

This particular umbrella because all girls this age love the Eiffel Tower for some reason and having their own umbrella is a big deal I guess...

A gift card to a makeup or jewelry place would be loved as well as cool gel/liquid/retractable highlighters.

If you need any more ideas I'm sure I can pull some more stuff out lol

Also, this is the gold leaf I used:

Anything with gold leaf on it is just capitalizing on the perceived worth of gold to massively inflate the price they charge. And yes, gold is very expensive, but gold leaf isn't. Gold leaf is so incredibly thin that you could coat a whole burger with it for less than $5.

Saffron is expensive but the amount you'd actually use is a few bucks at most.

Same with the rest of the ingredients. The Kobe beef (why would you even use Kobe just to grind it up when you can use regular beef and throw in some extra fat, but whatever).

That burger costs maybe $200 to make at most, most of which is just the wasteful use of Kobe beef. That burger could probably be replicated for under $100 with Wagyu subbed for the Kobe.

u/her_nibs · 6 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Gold leaf is pretty cheap stuff. A nice sentimental gift, but no notable monetary value.

u/kjoker84 · 5 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

To be fair, gold leaf is only like 0.1 micrometers thick. So that’s only like $1-$2 of gold right there

u/ThatBitterJerk · 3 pointsr/oddlysatisfying

$10 for 30 sheets sounds like a great novelty. If someone starts complaining about their financial situation around me, I'll just pull a pack out of my wallet and start eating the sheets.

u/ickmiester · 3 pointsr/bookbinding

It looks to me a bit more like cloth than paper, but either way, you can see the design wraps around the edges of the book, so the design is on whatever the wrapped their cover boards in. I can't tall you whether this was custom made or commercially bought, but it wouldn't be too hard to make something similar yourself:

  • Lay out your cover material, including length to wrap around the boards.

  • Stripe adhesive for gold foiling.

  • cover the whole material in gold leaf This looks like rose gold leaf to me.

  • brush away the excess leaf with a dry paintbrush

Alternatively, you could just get paint in the metallic color you like and stripe it on yourself. These lines don't look perfectly uniform, so i wouldn't be surprised if someone just took 15 minutes to paint it all on by hand with a paintbrush.
u/ilanallama85 · 3 pointsr/TalesFromRetail

You don’t have to be rich they’re only 30 bucks.

u/Spooky2000 · 2 pointsr/oddlysatisfying

Surprisingly not as expensive as you would think.

https://www.amazon.com/Gold-Leaf-Sheets-1000-Real/dp/B00VALQQ60

$.12 a sheet.

u/joshieecs · 2 pointsr/ChapoTrapHouse

This is excessive and wasteful, but putting it on a burger and selling it for $100 or whatever is just duping gullible rich people. It's like (at most) $5 worth of gold on a $12 burger.

Gold foil sheets are actually not outrageously priced. Here's an example from Amazon 25 sheets for $43 bucks.

Gold gilded sheets are even less expensive, 100 for $13, not much more expensive than any other kind of fancy decorative supply.

u/just_some_Fred · 2 pointsr/Fantasy

Doesn't look too expensive honestly. $15 for 100 2" square sheets doesn't sound that bad.

u/GFrohman · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

It's possible that it's real, gold leaf is extremely inexpensive.

u/permalink_save · 2 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

Gold plated food isn't completely outrageous. You can buy the gold leaf and gold flakes on Amazon. If you're using one sheet per desert, it is only adding $2/desert (they're big enough for individual servings, 3"x3").

The problem is this sundae is just add whatever expensive shit together without any coherence. It's not expensive because it's good, it's expensive because it has expensive ingredients. The gold adds nothing. Those chocolates aren't going to be good in ice cream because the cold changes the texture, and they are meant to be eaten on their own. And caviar? I mean I like caviar but give me a fucking break. Even if you omit the salt it still tastes like fucking fish.

If I'm spending a grand for a sundae I want some hand churned ice cream from the cream of a well fed cow, in house candied fruit, chocolate syrup made with really good chocolate, etc. Use gold flake sprinkles on it not a big solid chocolate leaf flower that probably tastes like ass.

That sundae reminds me of Trump's living room. Lot of random expensive gold plated shit just to look like something poor people imagine rich people like.

Another quick question and I'm done for now: is it okay if I get gold leaf that isn't entirely real gold but a blend will it work? (I might be wrong but I've found some listing that says it is like 999/1000 real gold which I read as meaning 99% real gold, so I might be wrong).

Better way of putting it: will these be alright?

24k gold leaf is pricier, but still not all that expensive. If someone is willing to do that to their gun, I wouldn't put something like gold leaf past them, nor would I put a rattlecan past them either.

u/fangsforthelaughs · 1 pointr/Makeup

I know I just commented but I just looked on Amazon and here are two options that would probably be to you in time if you have Prime shipping:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CQD174T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zefECb03AF9QJ

The second link is edible while the top one is not, not sure which one would be safer to use for a cosmetic purpose (if either of them even are safe for that, lol). Not sure if this is helpful at all but here you go!

I mean ... it says right in the description ...

> Each rose is carefully crafted with high-quality gold foil.

Leaf gold is really cheap because it is quite literally a few atoms thick only. So these prices do not surprise me.

PS: Example ... 30 sheets of leaf gold cost you 20 USD, and wholesale you could probably get them even cheaper. way cheaper example

Not enough gold in that room to be worth your time, it's all gold leaf This is actually very common in Japanese temples.

Not very acquainted with this new-fangled thing called Art, are you? Also, gold leaf is not exactly expensive.

u/gridzbispudvetch · 1 pointr/DemocraticSocialism

This is gold leaf. It's insanely thin, about 4-5 millionths of an inch according to Google. You can get 100 sheets of it for $12. I don't think it's quite as much of a splurge as you believe. It's pointless, but it's not something only the richest of the rich can do.
