People react to the cold differently, so what works for me might not work for you. This is what I wear through the winter in New England:

Brisk (55F to 40F):

  • Bike jersey & shorts
  • Wool sweater
  • Wool socks
  • Full fingered cycling gloves

    Chilly (39F to 32F):

    Same as the above, plus:

  • Lightweight wind vest / jacket (such as https://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Izumi-Elite-Barrier-Jacket/dp/B003BLOU5G)
  • Wool / insulated cycling cap
  • Shoe covers
  • Over shorts
  • Sunglasses / clear glasses

    Cold (31F to 15F):

    Same as the above, plus:

  • Insulated base layer
  • Winterized cycling shoes instead of regular cycling shoes
  • Soft-shell pants / thermal leggings instead of over shorts
  • Ski gloves instead of cycling gloves

Why am I out here (Under 15F):

    Same as the above, plus:

  • Hardshell jacket instead of wind jacket
  • Lightly tinted ski goggles instead of sunglasses
  • Wool neck gaiter

The trick is to master the layering, and generate enough body heat to keep yourself comfortable while moving.

The Black Bibs. Was hoping I found that coveted cheap-but-good, but no, they're complete garbage. I've put about 600 miles into this pair and they're already essentially unusable, chamois totally worthless, sitbones aching like you wouldn't believe. Hey, at least they were only $40... and better than nothing when I miss laundry day, I guess, though only by a slim margin

Now, this thing... surprisingly good value, I assumed it would be Chinese crap but I bought it at the same time as the Black Bib and this one's still doing fine, some of the stitching isn't perfect but it's still in one piece and the chamois performs admirably on my weekly century. The leg openings have a raw silicone band which kind of sucks but it does the job and doesn't wear out --- unlike the Black Bibs, whose compression leg openings are already totally stretched out... can't emphasize how crap The Black Bibs turned out to be.

edit: oh wow this is a running forum lol

u/DonOblivious · 8 pointsr/cycling

If it was advertised as a liner it's meant to go under other clothing. They're often a (see-through) mesh material and/or have a branded underwear like band around the top. The seems usually aren't meant to be seen.

Liner vs shorts. The liner model had to tape up his crotch because the mesh is too transparent to hide his junk.

Can you link what you purchased?

u/WoodChucking · 6 pointsr/cycling

I was about your size when I started seriously riding several years ago.

Bike shorts make a big difference. I hate regular bike shorts, tho, so I've been wearing something like this for the last several years.

I've come to love bike jerseys just for the back pockets.

u/eatmyshorts5 · 5 pointsr/Tekken

If you wear t shirts during the summer you can buy these sleeves that block UV rays and they don't get hot. Also of course hats and if you're real Asian umbrellas as well. I've seen pale ass Asian women wear UV blocking jackets at baseball games.

EDIT: example here: Tough Outdoors UV Protection Cooling Arm Sleeves, UPF 50 Long Sun Sleeves for Men and Women https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073TWJ7LL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9UDYDb4Q05ZRY

I am also very, very fair skinned. I brought a lot of sunscreen, but it wasn't as necessary as I thought.

    1. I am mostly under shade structures during the day, and most active in late afternoon/evening and at night. Most people are like this for heat reasons. [I also work bike repair during days and was therefor under shadecover]

    1. I wear sleeves. some UV sleeves from Amazon, like these. Sunscreen can make you "sticky" and then you just get dustier. Also, you don't have to worry about your sleeves "wearing off". It's easier to pair a set of sleeves with a t-shirt or top... you can remove them if you want, and they aren't always attached to your outfit if you go inside somewhere.

    1. There is so much dust in the air usually, I think it helps block a lot of the sun/UV.

    1. I brought a cheap gas station wide-brim hat. I like the fisherman style, woven type. They breath well. I dyed mine with cheap dies so it is rainbow colored. This protects my upper face/neck.

    1. I wear a cool facemask/cover most of the day for dust reasons... and this protected my lower face. I found this type of mask on Etsy years ago, and it's awesome. Easy to drink through for a sip, and you can leave it open if you need to for heat without exposing your face to the sun. I wear mine everywhere on Playa.

    1. I wore a kilt, so I also brought a bunch of knee-high socks to protect my legs.

Basically, Sunscreen is great, and I recommend you bring some. But layers and coverings should work better. If you grease up with lotion, you just turn into a caked-mess of playa dust. I recommend the spray-on sport kind that instantly dries, although it feels a little like you're wearing a coat of plastic.

I usually reccomend something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073TWJ7LL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uDFUCb3FY0WSH

You can say you have eczema. Some good excuses: "I have eczema and I have to slather on medicine, the sleeves help from getting it everywhere, and keeping it on my arms" "my eczema gets really bad and the sleeves are to help the skin shedding and wanting to scratch" stuff like that. You can make up excuses that fit your job, like I'd you work in food you don't want to appear unhygienic to people who don't know what eczema looks like or that you don't want to shed skin particles everywhere. Hope that helps some.

u/shiasur-prise · 3 pointsr/selfharm

I have UV sleeves that I got on amazon. They’re usually about $8 or $9 and they go all the way up to my shoulders. Just looks like you’re wearing a tight undershirt.

Here is my list I made for another post. It works from 60 to -10 or so.

Here are my recommendations for surviving a Boston winter:

Bibs, Base Layer, Leg Warmers, Arm Warmers, Thermal Jersey, Jacket, Helmet Cover, Toe Cover, Shoe Cover, Gloves, Balaclava & Socks.

This is almost exclusively Pearl Izumi because it fits me, I can get a good deal on most of it if I wait to buy and the quality is amazing. It is not cheap but I rode almost every week outdoors last year during one of the worst winters we have had in a long time.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a rear fender and wet chain lube. Also staying hydrated is very important as anyone would tell you but it is hard to drink cold water when it is cold so I find this stuff from Skratch Labs really helps. Be prepared to a lot more drive train maintenance due to the salt and sand you will get in your chain and cassette.

Let me know what you have questions on and I will be happy to report back. I don't use all of this on every ride, it is weather dependent but in the middle of winter, I certainly like being able to bundle up and then remove a layer or unzip when needed. It makes riding fun when the thermometer dips below 15°F.

u/perplexedbanana · 3 pointsr/AsianBeauty

They have UV sleeves. https://www.amazon.com/Shinymod-Protection-Protective-Compression-Activities/dp/B01GCJ6EWK/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1498861376&sr=1-3&keywords=uv+sleeves

I recently had an accident with an iron when the steaming mechanism malfunctioned. I have a wide prominent teeth bite-shaped scar/marks on my leg now where the steam hit. I honestly don't gaf. I wear shorts every day, and when people ask about it I tell them the "funny" story about me being an idiot.

Also, the fact that people ask you about it may mean that it's not as bad as you think it is: when I see someone with really bad scars, I'd never ask them (as stranger) because it may have been recently acquired and still painful for them to talk about, but if it's something I think is minor and may have an interesting story behind it and they look comfortable in their skin, I may ask.

I hope you also get to a point where you no longer care. I hope you also get to a point where you no longer care. Life's too short to let things like scars stop you from doing what you want to do.

370 lbs > 185 lbs here

Wheels are going to be the weak point. Personally I started on an inexpensive MTB for the stronger wheels/frame and then bought a new road bike as a reward for getting/keeping the weight off.

The bike fit is going to be the most important part of selection, you can always replace stuff as it fails, but a bad fit you'll be stuck with and it can make for a bad experience.

On the clothing side get something with a chamois in them, if you're anti spandex or self conscious you can get something like these liners and wear normal shorts over them.

u/profetic · 3 pointsr/MTB

I got a second pair off of Amazon for $33. They're every bit as comfortable as the $75 ZOIC ones I also have from my LBS

Any? https://www.amazon.com/s?k=cycling+shorts

I'm personally going to get these because they are overwear, not underwear, and have a nice pocket. But the brand is a notorious hit or miss brand: https://www.amazon.com/Baleaf-Cycling-Bicycle-Pockets-Quick-Dry/dp/B07MFZ7VH5/

u/mtnbiker98 · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

Gotta work on that butt callous :)

What clothes are you wearing when you ride? You dont have to be in full spandex but, it might help to get a liner like this that you can wear under whatever your outer layer is.

Short Liners

I went through the same thing the first time I got on a mountain bike. Midway through the ride we stopped for a drink, I almost couldnt get back on the bike. It'll pass.

Regardless, good job on getting back in the saddle!

u/FunElled · 2 pointsr/tattoos

I wear these:

HOPESHINE Arm Cooling Sleeves UV Sun Protection Arm Sleeves for Cycling, Driving, Outdoor Sports, Golf, Basketball Sleeves for Men&Women to Cover Arms (3-Pairs Black+ Grey+ Dark Grey) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C3L4JFM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KoLTBbJZ87HXG

u/WorkBoyWork · 2 pointsr/rollerblading

I consider padded shorts (we call em crash pads but I guess all pads are crash pads...) a must. After falling on my right hip a few times practicing parallel slides... A nasty bone-bruised hip is gonna cause you pain for a good long while.

I currently use these g-form pads, but I've also used standard football hip pad compression shorts that you can get at any sporting goods store. The football pads come with thigh pads as well, so they're a tad bulkier but if you want you can always cut them off.

u/grandzooby · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I really like to wear these cycling undershorts: http://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Izumi-Liner-Short-Black/dp/B004ELBQUY

And then wear a pair of long running shorts over them; something like these: http://coolspotters.com/clothing/nike-9-inch-stretch-woven-mens-running-shorts

u/mcampo84 · 2 pointsr/bicycling

In that case, padded mountain bike shorts with cargo pockets like these might be a good suggestion. Most of the time you can't tell the difference between them and regular shorts.

u/SquirrelPower · 2 pointsr/bicycling

You can buy the liners themselves online and they are like $30. Worth it.

The chamois really isn't there for padding (although it can help) -- it's there to absorb the sweat of your nether regions, which is something that pure spandex can't do.

u/ChevDeezle · 2 pointsr/cycling

Personally, I do not like shorts. I bought this set of bibs off Amazon and I am a huge fan. Never going back to shorts. Everything stays where it's supposed to. And they're only $19.99!

Hi Jort! I suffer from a thing called hyperhidrosis which causes my hands to sweat severly when I game. I've found a good sleeve for athletics, or just UV blocking one is very helpful in my case. WHen I don't wear it, my wrist and arm grip my mouse pad and when I try to track it's often jumpy.

I've had good luck with this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GCJ6EVQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/kwalko · 2 pointsr/cycling

I have a pair of Przewalski from Amazon. $30. Did a century in them with no problem. I like them better than the Pearl Izumi ones that I have which were twice the price. I also tried out a Performance Elite one and didn't like it at all. For the next pair I might try out The Black Bibs as I've heard good things about them.

https://www.amazon.com/Przewalski-Basics-Padded-Shorts-Waist/dp/B01HUNDFGU/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1542653264&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bib%2Bshorts&th=1&psc=1

u/boredcircuits · 2 pointsr/bicycling

The problem is that most alternatives either won't provide a barrier to the wind or don't breathe at all. Either is a significant problem when cycling. There's also a few other features that are nice (cut so they don't bunch up much behind the knees and don't slide down the leg).

I use Pearl Izumi leg warmers which are a relatively inexpensive $45.

If that's outside your budget, look into running gear. It either needs to be tight-fitting (to keep it out of the chainrings) or you could use a strap around your ankle.

u/jfranci3 · 1 pointr/bicycling

Try a set of $40 Pearl Izumi Mountain Liner padded bib shorts. These are cheap and very decent. Wear them under your normal shorts as underwear. https://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Izumi-Mens-Liner-Shorts/dp/B00ACH3SOQ

These shorts should come with a set and are nice shorts. https://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Izumi-Canyon-Shorts-Black/dp/B01015X5FU/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1475079416&sr=1-6&keywords=pearl%2Bizumi%2Bliner%2Bshorts&th=1&psc=1

What helped me a lot were these mountain biking shorts. Read the reviews, I ordered one size larger than would be suggested from the sizing and I'm glad I did.

I'm personally a huge fan of Pearl Izumi and have been for quite some time. I've been riding with these jackets for 3 years now and I've never felt let down.

Wear liner shorts under your other athletic shorts. They have the same chamois padding for your taint as the lycra shorts.

http://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Izumi-Liner-Shorts-Medium/dp/B0091ISOBE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367960587&sr=8-2&keywords=pearl+izumi+liner+shorts

$40. You can certainly afford that.

u/bismuthsalamander · 1 pointr/bicycling

Newbie road cyclist riding a Giant Defy 5 with stock everything, and I'm dealing with saddle pain. I have a pair of Pearl Izumi Quest bibs (http://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Izumi-Quest-Short-Medium/dp/B008BZPVCI), and while they're an improvement over non-padded shorts, I feel like they (forgive my indelicacy) somehow shift things around so that I'm putting more pressure right on the crotch/perineum instead of on the sit bones. The experience varies - a couple days ago I did 20 miles with no pain, and today I started having pain within about 8 miles. I'm not sure if this has to do with my posture, the fit, the saddle, the shorts being cheap or the shorts just not fitting me well. Any advice?

u/FNGhostrider · 1 pointr/MTB

I think they usually run $30 - $40 USD. Amazon has some sizes as low as $26 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091ISOBE/

u/Rocketman999 · 1 pointr/gravelcycling

Cool! After a helmet (I have a Specialized Align, works great) and maybe bike shorts (I've been testing out cheap ones on Amazon, so far I like the Santic ones best https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FF1GML4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ), I'd get a water bottle and water bottle cage. Next I think would be flat tire stuff: patch kit, tire irons, spare tube, and pump. And equally important, instruction how to change a flat. Maybe the shop does classes, or the community bike advocacy group may. That's probably about it! Oh maybe also sunblock haha. Weird places will burn, like the top of your knees.

u/710_113 · 1 pointr/bicycling

And if you have unpadded bike shorts, you can get something like these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ELBQUY

u/crapforbrains · 1 pointr/XXRunning

I have a cycling vest that the sleeves can snap off of that I use when running in the dark. I don't see anything quite the same on amazon but this would probably work (I'm not sure why it says "mens"?)

u/adkhiker137 · 1 pointr/bicycling

I am looking for advice on a good pair of shorts or liners on a budget. I'm new to long-distance cycling (but not cycling in general), and am training for a century. Trips over 30 miles can get a bit... uncomfortable for me. I already have a great seat (Serfas Hybrid RX). I have searched other similar posts here, and it seems like Pearl Izumi is the general consensus for best brand with lower price options, but I am a bit worried about the leg fit. I have about a 35" waist and 24" thighs, and I read that the Izumis can be a bit tight in the thigh. Is that the case? I was also looking at Zoics, how are they for a fit for a guy with wide hips and thighs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well you should order from Amazon to stay in that price range. Check these shorts out 1 or 2. I really recommned full bibs though because the shorts tend to move around, but I really don't know your preference with that. With that being said, if you live close enough to one of those bike shops just go in so you can try a pair on to know your size so you don't have to order multiple pairs online.

u/SgtBaxter · 1 pointr/cycling

You're identical to my size.

Don't do shorts, do bibs. The shorts cut into your waist and get uncomfortable.

I have a bunch of Performance Elite bibs, good value, comfortable, and you don't have to baby them in the washer/dryer. I usually wear a medium.

If you're looking for something less expensive, these Arsuxeo bibs do the trick, and the price is right I have 2 pairs of those. Can recommend them!

u/peaceloveandgranola · 1 pointr/unpopularopinion

If it matters, I have a full sleeve, and I don’t feel that I’ve ever been hindered, even having worked in religious organizations. Worst case scenario, if i feel i NEED to be covered (which is rare), i wear one of those sleeves that you can put on under a t-shirt that wicks off sweat, so it doesn’t get hot either.

This one is my current favorite:

Men’s version:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FC9NY12/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5Mc5Bb53HKS3R

Women’s version:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GCJ6EVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VMc5BbMS984H0

But of course, if you just don’t really want to get tattoos, that’s fine too. Just sharing what I do :)
